Agape bathtubs: If statement bath tubs are your jam then you can’t go past the latest collection from Italy’s Agape. Available locally at Artedomus, there’s three new styles; the super original and organic inspired ‘DR’ (designed by Marcio Kogan), the beautifully curved and compact ‘Cuna’ and the unusual ‘Lariana.’

Kohler touchless toilet: In great news for germaphobes, Kohler has just released the ‘ModernLife Touchless’ toilet. The first hands-free toilet ever available in Australia, it’s activated by passing a hand over the top of a sensor that’s positioned beneath the lid of the cistern. Previously, the technology used a beam-based sensor that was often mistakenly activated by general movement around the toilet. While there’s an entry level model, the elite one features a battery operated deodoriser and LED night light too. From $999.

Australian bathroom trends: June 2018 edition

It’s that time again when we bring you our latest fabulous bathroom finds and this month has been a big one for basins, specifically of the stand-alone kind. From a unique marble number to a quirky gold trimmed one, pedestal basins are trending.

Antonio Lupi AGO185 freestanding basins: Made from interior designer David Hick’s favourite marble (Nero Marquinia), these Italian-made standalone pedestal basins make quite the statement. Italian designer Mario Ferrarini is responsible for the fluid, organic design that is also available in Carrara marble. But at $17,763.86 each they don’t come cheap.

Merwe Loche basin in zinc: This is a fabulous option for those that favour rustic interiors but I can also see it working in an industrial space too. Made from zinc, a blue-grey and brown patina will develop on the basin over time. Zinc is also non-porous, anti-microbial and antibacterial too making it ideal for germophobes. $2699.

Merwe zinc basin

Kohler Mica countertop vessel in black: With black such a big look for bathrooms right now this slim-edged square number fits the bill very nicely indeed. Available in square and round formats (and white too), they are made from a self-described ‘super-ceramic’ that enables the walls of the basin to be very slim (a mere 6mm) and elegant but harder and more durable than traditional vitreous china. The basin is also coated in a product that ensures it is stain-resistant and retains its glossy good looks. $859 (square) and $799 (round).

ISVEA Capitone freestanding basin: Italian bathroom brand ISVEA is known for its statement pieces and this freestanding basin continues the tradition. Not one for the shy, retiring type, this ceramic basin is available in eight colour combinations with white, taupe and black as the base and platinum, white, gold or red for the top. $4400.

apaiser Kelly Hoppen Bijoux collection: “I wanted to create a collection that was a balance between hard edges and sensual curves. I was inspired by the symmetrical arrangements of the facets of a perfectly cut diamond,” says Kelly Hoppen of her latest collaboration with apaiser – the Bijoux collection. With three products in the range to choose from – a free-standing bath, a basin and an integrated basin – their origami-like forms are statement-making. $1095 (basin), $1495 (integrated basin), $10,995 (bath).

Scarabeo Bucket basin: This basin looks much like a bucket with the chrome ‘handle’ working as a nifty hand towel rail. Available in nine designs including one emblazoned with a paint drip, another with a basketball hoop and another with a fish, these certainly are conversation starters. From $950.

The lowdown on titanium for your bathroom

Researching different types of finishes for your bathroom reno? Have you thought about titanium?

The lowdown on titanium for your bathroom

Titanium, renowned for its strength and lightness, is the hot new finish for the bathroom – and tipped to be the favourite alternative to polished chrome. With deeper, richer tones than polished chrome it retains the shine and reflection of chrome while providing the perfect foil for other favourite finishes for the bathing space such as timber, stone and ceramics.

The lowdown on titanium for your bathroom

Typical of the look is the bathroom pictured, showing Kohler’s new- release Titanium Composed tapware teamed with pared-back stone benchtop, timeless penny round ceramic wall tiles and convincingly realistic timber ceramic tiles. The result is timeless, covetable style!

Composed is Kohler’s award-winning basin and showering tapware in the new Titanium PVD finish (International Red Dot Design Award). PVD technology – Physical Vapour Deposition – enables luxury metal finishes to be applied to solid brass tapware by vapourising the finish and then molecularly bonding it to the chrome surface. The result is a tarnish, scratch and corrosion resistant finish that exceeds industry standards and carries a 15-year warranty.

Kohler release award-winning Avid tapware

Kohler’s new tapware design has scored an international Red Dot Design Award, delivering luxurious simplicity to the everyday bathroom.

Reminiscent of liquid metal, its fluid form rises from the benchtop and is stretched to a slender, tapered spout. The lever control is an extension of the body of the tap – no harsh edges, sharp angles or unnecessary embellishment.

The collection includes Standard, Tall and Super Tall basin mixers as well as a three-piece widespread model, a wall mount basin mixer and shower mixers. The Avid range features a 5-star WELS rating, using just six litres of water per minute, and is finished in a corrosion and tarnish-resistant polished chrome.

Interiors Addict bathroom reno: the big reveal!

Photography by Jacqui Turk

Today, I’m finally sharing the ‘after’ photos of our bathroom and WC reno. For those of you who have been following on Instagram, I’m sorry it has taken a while! Of course, the reno took more like eight weeks than four, but as I have learnt, there will always be something to cause a delay! In fact, I have learnt so much from my first reno that I’ll be sharing a series of posts about this but today is all about sharing some beautiful photos of our bathroom and WC, which we are delighted with!

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-5

There was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted white subway tiles and marble pennyrounds in our new bathroom (more on the WC next door later). While I dabbled with other combos (and there were so many to tempt me!), I found I kept coming back to this. Then it was a choice between the beveled subway or the more organic, perfectly imperfect kind. As you can see, we went for the beveled and I’m so in love with the texture they provide. A large tub was also a non-negotiable, being a Pom and a seven-baths-a-week kinda girl.

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-12

Our apartment bathroom isn’t huge, as you can see, and there wasn’t really a better layout than the one we started with. The ‘beautiful’ beige original bathroom didn’t have much going for it but the layout was a good use of space. This also saved us moving any plumbing, which kept costs down. Keeping a largely white colour scheme and introducing a frameless shower, all gave a sense of space and improved flow to the room.

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-21

You can have too much white though, so I knew feature tiles would be important. To create the niche where we could put my much-loved pennyrounds, we had to build across what was an alcove in the shower, losing a little depth from the shower cubicle, but it was absolutely worth it! Using these expensive tiles in small areas like the niche and behind the basin, is a great way to create a more high end and interesting look without spending a fortune (let’s face it, labour is expensive enough and you need a lot of different trades for a bathroom!).

Speaking of trades, I am so happy I chose to go with one company to project manage the entire job and coordinate all the trades. I think I would have had a nervous breakdown without Integriti Bathrooms. Not only did they look after all the logistics, it was brilliant to have one point of contact to discuss any concerns or changes with.

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-6

Another way we broke up the white was with the stunning custom-made timber vanities from Ingrain Designs in Melbourne. I discovered these guys from their work on previous series of The Block. Everybody who has seen the striking grain on these pieces has been just wowed. Not only does the bathroom vanity have super useful soft-close drawers, the shaving cabinet above is an exercise in simplicity meets quality. When you open it, it’s timber inside too. No plastic in sight. Such understated luxury! I’m so delighted to have something made by hand by a small (growing!) business in Melbourne from Australian Marri timber. Because it’s floating, it gives the illusion of more floor space. It also means we can store a basket of Seb’s bath toys under there (when we aren’t having photoshoots!).

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-14

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-13

Although we could have, I am a big believer in not squashing a freestanding bath tub into a too-small space. I think it looks silly plus, think of trying to clean behind it! I’m really happy with how this inset bath from Kohler turned out. I deliberately chose an oval bath to soften all the hard angles in the room and to give a bit of a a look of a freestanding one. What do you think? It is so deep and long (1700mm) and comfortable to relax in with the perfect incline for lying back and reading a magazine.

Now when it came to taps, I can’t say this is my dream tapware but it’s high quality and won’t date quickly. We made this choice with resale in the not too distant future in mind. If I had my way we’d be talking brass, no question! But sometimes a girl’s got to be practical. The bathroom basin was a last minute change, picked up from Bunnings for a mere $149! I’m really happy with it.

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-11

While the bathroom was deliberately simple, allowing the vanities to shine, I didn’t want to lose the decorative cornice we have throughout the apartment, which had to be removed when we built the wall across for the shower niche. Integriti Bathrooms tracked down a place in Melbourne with the moulds to make new cornice for the entire room, which matches perfectly. I really love these little details. To make the cornice pop, I was brave with my choice of a rather dark charcoal, Dulux Tea House, for the paint.

We kept the WC next door separate rather than knocking them through because when you only have one bathroom, it’s a practical choice! At least someone can use the toilet while someone else is having a bath, for example! We wanted to keep the look and feel the same so we used the same floor, wall and feature tiles and commissioned a tiny custom vanity, again from Ingrain. The fact that this had to be a cupboard with a door rather than drawers because of a lack of depth, just meant we ended up with one beautiful piece of timber which is the star of the show. Finding a basin to fit this tiny vanity however was a serious struggle. In the end we went with a very small, very expensive Gabicci one from Candana, but it really is a beauty!

If I had my time again, I’d put a lot more thought into the basins, their size in relation to the vanities and the positioning of the taps. The mirror was deliberately round to soften all the hard angles, and I really love it. It’s just a touch different and modern.

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-4

The tiny vanity fits an amazing amount inside, including 12 toilet rolls! Magic as we had zero storage before!

jensbathroom_jacquiturk-3

To finish it all off, the white plantation shutters were a must. I’m not sure there’s really any other option for bathroom window coverings in my opinion! I did consider leaving the sash windows ‘undressed’ being that they’re lovely features but, in contrast to the perfect finished rooms, they suddenly looked a bit old and sorry for themselves after years of repainting, not always very well!

Despite being a seventies apartment, our place doesn’t look like one and has a lot of lovely classic details like French doors, sash windows and moulding on all the doors and built-ins. This was another reason a super modern bathroom wouldn’t have worked here, not that that’s really our style anyway. I think we have achieved (if I don’t say so myself) the perfect timeless balance.

So, there we have it! I hope you like our reno! If you have any questions or comments, please drop them below. As I said, this will be the first of several posts about the bathroom and what we learned from the process.

Lifting the lid on luxury toilet design

A French curve heated seat, one-touch remote control, sensor-activated cover and rimless bowl. Luxury toilets have come a long way in the last few years and two new designs from leading manufacturer Kohler do not disappoint.

k-limg-aleo_veil_abrazo_adj_mr
Kohler’s Veil smart toilet

The ‘unveiling’ of Kohler’s Veil smart toilet takes hygiene and comfort to a new level in terms of luxury and personalised convenience.

The Veil is a self-cleaning wall hung toilet with advanced bidet features controlled by a one-touch remote control. The design deserves special mention as its balanced curves and sculpted form inject a sense of beauty into the utilitarian toilet or bathroom space.

The French curve heated seat, with its gently dished shape, minimises pressure points for extra comfort while its antibacterial material enhances hygiene levels.

kohler-veil-wh-toilet_w-remote
Kohler’s Veil smart toilet

The ultra-responsive remote control offers a suite of customised features to optimise hygiene and personal comfort — these include a choice of soft, pulsating or spiral wash with instant air-infused warm water; choice of water temperature; warm air dryer with adjustable temperature control; and seat temperature adjustment.

The Veil’s stainless steel spray wand automatically cleans itself with sterilised water after each use – and it automatically sanitises itself with UV light every 24 hours.

Further testament to the rich list of features are the automatic seat cover – sensor-activated with three adjustable distance settings to automatically open and close the lid – and the blue LED nightlight on the face plate of the toilet.

The luxury doesn’t come cheap. Kohler’s Veil retails for $4,449.

grande-front
Kohler’s Grande Back to Wall Toilet Suite

Kohler’s Grande Back to Wall Toilet Suite features a rimless bowl with a smooth interior and ultra-efficient flush system – this not only improves hygiene but makes the toilet far easier to clean.

The rim of traditional toilet bowls — originally designed to optimise the distribution of water needed to rinse the toilet interior — creates a safe haven for germs and bacteria and makes adequate cleaning quite tricky.

The new rimless Grande, by Kohler, has no rim, just a very smooth interior that is rigorously cleaned by the toilet’s ultra-efficient flush system. Basically the flush propels the water, very powerfully, around the bowl, but clever engineering and shaping ensures no splashback.

The compact, understated design of the Grande Back To Wall toilet suite means it will perform equally well in master bathrooms and ensuites and complement any interior design aesthetic. It projects just 650mm from the wall and is a mere 395mm wide.

Additional features include Quiet Close VQR (Vertical Quick Release) toilet seat – really easy removal for enhanced cleaning – and 4 star WELS rating (average flush of just 3.5 litres). It is suitable for both new builds as well as retrofit as it has back and side entry for water feed.

The Kohler Grande Rimless toilet suite is available nationally for $859.

And now our toilet lesson is done!

Latest bathroom basins are both space-saving and beautiful

There’s not more you can want in a bathroom than space-saving designs and beautiful fixtures, and the new basin offerings by Kohler Company tick both those boxes.

Antilia-LS-2 interiors addict

A global leader in bathroom design and innovation, they have tackled the issue of tight spaces by introducing low profile wall hung basins and a counter top version. And while each of the basins is compact in design, they forfeit nothing in the way of style or eye-catching qualities.

Kohler Reve wall hung-Stance interiors addict

For those craving a statement piece with sleek, geometric lines, the Reve offers three different sizes, integrated counter space for toiletries and a beautifully faceted profile. The largest 1055mm wide model protrudes just 500mm from the wall, while the smaller 800mm model has a more compact 412mm protrusion and the mini 650mm option, a mere 400mm.

Kohler Reach Toilet-LS interiors addict

One of the newest additions to the Kohler range is the sleek, lineal Reach wall mount basin with optional integrated towel rail in brushed steel. Protruding just 225mm from the wall and with a width of 500mm it offers the perfect solution for tight spaces while allowing ample room for washing. Larger models of the Reach are also available – the 700mm and the 1050mm models, which both feature large flat vanity areas either side of the basin for storing toiletries while again barely impinging on the overall space.

Antilia L-S interiors addict

For a dose of pure luxury in a confined space, the Antilia Wading Pool slab of beautiful cast glass is hard to beat. Its subtle rippled texture and slightly concave shape perfectly mimics the time-worn surface of natural stone under a cascade of water. And for really tight spaces a corner basin, like the Ove, can be the ideal fit. It takes just 225mm of space on each wall yet offers ample room for hand washing.

The complete range of Kohler bathroom basins is available nationally from retailers throughout Australia.

Kohler’s new, bold and modern tapware

Sometimes simplicity is best, with the new Stance tapware collection from Kohler a striking example of restraint and bold design.

Stance-Reve

The perfect statement for the contemporary bathroom, the single column with refined spout and joystick control is a beautiful example of the reworking of the classic elements of good design.

Featuring basin, bath and shower mixers plus a very contemporary, minimalist slide shower, the Stance collection has something for everyone. The basin mixers come in both a tall and standard size, in a hob and wall mount option. The bath mixers also offer the choice of hob or wall mount installation, both in perfect step with their basin counterparts. And the shower/bath mixers – with and without diverter – feature an elegant ‘touch me’ lever mounted on a polished chrome backplate, while the statement-making bath spouts are in wall mounted and hob mounted options.

SCENE_Stance tap 1

The Stance basin mixers are all five-star WELS rated, using just six litres of water a minute, while the Stance shower carries the maximum three-star WELS rating using only nine litres of water a minute.

Kohler’s Stance collection of tapware and showers is available from retailers throughout Australia. Visit their website for details on local stockists.

Is this the bathroom of the future?

When Australia’s SJB Architects were invited to design the Bathroom of the Future for Kohler’s flagship store in Shanghai, China they envisaged a luxurious cocoon of new age materials equipped with the very latest innovations.

Future Bathroom-SJB-14-1

SJB was one of only four leading architectural firms from around the world invited by Kohler to design a bathroom showcasing one of five themes: Chinese, Contemporary, Classic, Transitional and Futuristic. The project was developed as a means of commemorating Kohler’s 140th anniversary as a global leader in the field of bathroom design and technology.

Future Bathroom-SJB-14-2

SJB architect Tristan Wong, who spearheaded the design, felt the bathroom of the future could be a global traveller’s retreat and as such located in the hull of a ship or fuselage of a jet. Wong’s vision is of a seamless, folding cocoon of new age materials – inspired by the highly sculpted, dynamic forms emerging in car and boat design – melding highly evolved technology with a tactile experience that imparts a feeling of invigoration and vitality to anyone entering the space.

Walls and ceiling fold and merge to conceal lighting, speakers and exhaust fan, transporting what is essentially a highly practical multi-disciplinary bathing space to an exciting and dynamic level. The yacht-style timber flooring provides warmth underfoot which complements the long, carbon fibre vanity that morphs into a daybed.

Future Bathroom-SJB-14-4

“We made an intentional shift away from the more traditional bathroom materials of tile and stone that often have a cold, utilitarian feel, to the highly versatile Kerlite which is a kind of ceramic porcelain. We chose a combination of white Kerlite for a clean, bright feeling and a bronze-champagne Kerlite to create warmth and contrast. Carbon fibre was the other material used extensively in the design. Chosen for its malleability, strength and waterproof qualities, it was the perfect choice for the vanity and daybed. It also has a great aesthetic, with the woven strands of filament visible through the resin,” said Tristan.

Kohler’s SOK overflowing bath was chosen for both its luxury and its ability for contained overflow, even in rough seas and occasional turbulence. Designed for two people, the Sok offers deep immersion and the option of chromatherapy and bubble massage.

The futuristic Numi toilet, a Bluetooth enabled ‘hub’ offering music, night light, warm air for the feet and automatically opening and closing lid and seat, is placed in the space as much for its sculptural effect as its versatility. It is perfectly complemented by a pair of low slung, rectangular Forefront basins.

“We chose the Karbon taps as they are an incredible piece of engineering and design, constructed in part from carbon fibre, one of the lightest and strongest materials available, and with a joystick control. This really IS a product of the future,” Tristan said.

To complete the look, is the multifunctional, electronically controlled shower area equipped with watertile overhead shower panels and wall mounted body sprays to create an all-enveloping, totally luxurious showering experience.

“Kohler’s ability to create new, varied and continually innovative products meant that when it came to designing a bathroom of the future Kohler already had a number of cutting edge products that were suitable. There was a seamless integration between our design and the existing Kohler products, almost as though they had been custom designed! From an architect’s perspective this is key to Kohler’s success – they invest heavily in design that challenges the norm and is cutting edge in both its aesthetic and engineering.

“Mirrored walls in the bathroom have integrated PC screens to enable the global nomad to reconnect with the world after having enjoyed a precious interlude of relaxation and rejuvenation courtesy of a space delivered in an altogether unique and futuristic way.”

The latest in glass bathroom basins from Kohler

Glass is reflecting the current look in bathroom styling (pardon the pun). Think large mirrors, glass basins and statement jars and containers.

Key to the look is marrying the timeless natural beauty of decorative elements in stone, timber and woven natural fibres with the clean, contemporary finishes of translucent glass, ceramic tiles, polished chrome and vitreous china.
