What’s new in bathrooms: April 2021

With overseas travel still out of reach (well aside from the New Zealand experiment!), many Aussies are creating resort and spa-like bathrooms at home. From sumptuous stone-like porcelain panels to black accents and the biophilia trend, this month is an interesting one for bathrooms.

Artedomus Maximum porcelain panels: Designed to replicate natural stone, these new porcelain panels are not only exceptionally strong and durable, but they’re low maintenance, practical and lightweight. Available in five designs (Verdi Alpi, Bleu Di Savoie, Apuano, Royal Platinum and Urban), they’re perfect for creating a continuous, uninterrupted pattern for when you want a space to feel larger (the lack of seams is a fabulous feature). The panels have hygienic credentials also; they’re coated in a photocatalytic coating that is antiviral, anti-odour, and the first of its kind on the market. POA.

Nood Co: In great news for coloured concrete lovers, Nood Co. has relaunched its surface and wall mounted basin ranges with brand new, more affordable, pricing starting from $720. Yay! And in a special sneak peek, the brand has shared its new Herbert basin with us; it’s due to launch soon.

Methven: We love a trend around here so when we heard that biophilia was in vogue, we wanted to know more. Used to describe the “innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world,” when it comes to interiors, biophilia translates to bringing the outside in via house plants, natural materials and colours.

“Treated timbers and tiles that have the appearance of stone, or are glazed in natural tones, will ground the space in nature. Introducing metallic elements through taps, shower systems, hand rails and cabinetry hardware will add to this effect, while matte blacks can further embody deep rock hues,” adds Andy Grigor, head of design and innovation a Methven who explains that his latest range draws inspiration from New Zealand’s stunning landscape.

iStone and ZAFF Designs Louise bath: Designed in Italy and distributed nationally by Paco Jaanson, this freestanding bath has a high-back slipper shape and comes in classic white, brown quartz and a rather unusual hand painted floral design. From $4,400.

Schots Home Emporium: When it comes to interiors, our penchant for black doesn’t seem to be waning and it’s arguably never been more popular for bathrooms. A one-stop shop for all things noir, Schots Home Emporium has really embraced the trend with a plethora of options available including freestanding baths, vanities, basins, tap ware and encaustic tiles.

Beaumont Tiles Palm Beach tile: Named after one of Sydney’s most beloved beaches, this Australian made decorative tile features a variety of natural plant designs and is available in grey and white.

“This tile was made to bring the relaxation derived from nature into the home of everyday Aussies. After what has been a tough year for many, the Palm Beach range offers that touch of Zen that many are yearning for,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont Tiles design specialist.

What’s new in kitchens & bathrooms: March 2021

Textured concrete basins, accessories inspired by ancient Greek architecture and Dolce and Gabbana‘s latest SMEG collaboration, this latest bathroom and kitchen looks are an eclectic bunch.

Concrete Nation RAW collection: Comprised of three new textured basins (Cosa, Terra and Milos), in three custom earth-toned colours (clay, oyster and stone), the latest Concrete Nation collection is inspired by the pandemic.

“If this year has taught us anything, it is that we have a strong desire to connect to nature and that our interiors should be serene, layered and warm spaces we can retreat to in a fast-paced digital world. As a result, there really is a renewed appreciation for, and a return to, thoughtful design and craftsmanship. This collection is the antithesis of polished man-made surfaces and cookie-cutter pieces,” says Concrete Nation co-founder Kate Lett. From $890.

The RAW basins are handcrafted to showcase architectural concrete in is raw, natural form.

Greg Natale Hellenica bathroom accessories: Informed by ancient Greek architecture, Greg Natale’s latest bathroom accessories celebrate linearity and geometry with a design that references the concentric square ceiling coffers that adorned the Acropolis. The range includes a gloss white tray, soap pump (brass or silver top) and storage jar. The Hellenica collection complements the designer’s gorgeous Astoria towel range. From $15.

Australian bathroom trends: September 2020 edition

It’s been a while between bathroom trend round-ups, but I can assure you it was worth the wait. From Beaumont Tiles’ new complete bathroom packages to Fibonacci Stone’s stunning new terrazzo designs and Cultiver‘s brand new bathroom collection, there’s plenty to love in our latest edit.

Beaumont Tiles: Taking the guesswork out of renovating your bathroom, the latest release from Beaumont Tiles is a series of complete packages that include everything that a bathroom reno requires. Think tiles, taps, cabinetry, a shower screen, toilet and more; all packaged up in a range of styles from coastal to Scandinavian, traditional, contemporary, industrial and everything in between.

The Essentials package

Developed in response to many consumers feeling overwhelmed by the bathroom design process, yet inspired by looks they’d seen online and on TV shows like The Block, the packages are designed to simplify the experience for the consumer.

“We developed our complete bathroom packages to each be different, yet create turnkey on-point looks that include everything you’d need to perfectly execute a bathroom look with interior styling prowess. We’ve worked with some of Australia’s most respected stylists and renovators including Simon and Shannon Vos, and Kyal and Kara Demmrich to ensure that each styled bathroom is flawlessly curated and adaptable to each customers’ needs,” says Beaumont Tiles design specialist Christie Wood.

Fibonacci Stone: When it comes to terrazzo, there’s few companies that create more beautiful designs than Fibonacci Stone and its latest release is no exception. ‘Ghosted’ and ‘Polarity’ are the brand’s latest creations and they’ve already been specified by some of Australia’s top interior designers prior to official release; Flack Studio and Doherty Design Studio to name just two.

Fibonacci Ghosted
Fibonacci Ghosted

Ghosted is a subtle mix of greys, black and white while tiny hints of pale clay and moss add complexity to this gorgeous design.

Polarity is the less subtle of the two; there’s bent and straight bits, cool and warm, light and dark, and the odd bit of red and green thrown in too. We love.

What’s new in bathrooms: August 2020

Let’s take a look at what’s new in bathrooms this month, from coloured concrete freestanding sinks on cylinders to a deep bath tub perfect for relaxing, to navy vanities and a statement-making sink!

The Modular Freestanding Basin Range is the latest from Nood, the specialists in coloured concrete, started by former WA Blockheads Matt and Kim. Choose from 14 colours and seven circular basin designs, atop a cylinder stand. Then it’s up to you whether or not to include the handy tray, big enough for your soap and essentials.

Nood’s 14 coloured concrete options
Mix and match (or not) your concrete colours

From $1,950.

Navy’s been my favourite colour for many years, and Early Settler have added two very stylish new vanities to their bathroom range in the hue.

The Nate is 1100mm long with two soft-close drawers offering ample room for your shaving gear and cosmetics. It has a built-in resin sink and will set you back $1,199 (save $200 if you’re a Home Club member). Tapware and waste sold separately.

Sleek and contemporary, the Harrington vanity is beautifully crafted from waxed poplar wood with an elegant marble top. Two soft-close cupboards and a deep drawer provide plenty of room to keep your bathroom organised, while the long legs lend a minimalist aesthetic. It’s 1000mm wide and $1,499 (save $250 if you’re a Home Club member).

The winter weather definitely makes a hot soak more appealing and the new Delano bath from Highgrove Bathrooms sure looks comfortable! Crafted with smooth, contoured edges and a lustrous matte black or white surface, it’s made of sanitary grade acrylic and has a high gloss easy clean coating, to ensure it lasts. It’s 1800mm long and costs $1,390 in white and $1,490 in black.

The Tsunami basin is the latest from Italian design house Scarabeo at Paco Jaanson. A word of Japanese origin used to define a giant wave of unusual height, this was the inspiration for designers Giovanni Calisti and Massimiliano Braconi.

It can be wall mounted or an above-counter piece with a single hole tap set. Available in a range of colours and sizes, it will make a real statement.

Victoria + Albert Baths’ 2020 bathroom predictions: From bold colours to the feature basin making a comeback, this year is shaping up to be an interesting one for bathrooms, if the latest trend predictions from Victoria + Albert Baths’ are anything to go by.

“As homeowners start to feel bolder and braver in their designs, we anticipate a rise in colour finishes, with a particular interest in colours that evoke emotion. In saying this, the colour scheme doesn’t have to be dark and moody with black and monochrome tones, which is commonly seen in bathroom interiors. This year’s colour trends are rumoured to be muted blue and green tones, which are perfect for calming bathroom environments,” says Victoria + Albert Baths’ brand manager, Emma Joyce.

“Basins are underrated within bathroom interiors, with many designers overlooking the impact a beautiful basin can have on a bathroom’s finish. We predict the interest in basins and vanities will rise this year, particularly with the assortment of options available to create a unique atmosphere,” says Emma.

Australian bathroom trends: November 2019 edition

While we’re hurtling towards the end of the year, the bathroom scene continues to turn out plenty of interesting innovations. From 2020 tile trend predictions to a sleek integrated vanity, and plant-dyed hypo-allergenic towels, these are our top bathroom picks for November.

2020 tile trend predictions via Beaumont Tiles: Fresh from a visit to the world’s largest tile and ceramics trade show (Cersaie Trade Fair in Bologna, Italy), the team at Beaumont Tiles have identified key tile trends for 2020 – green, terrazzo, large slabs and natural stone, and Moroccan Zellige.

Green tiles

“The environment and the world around us are at the forefront of many people’s minds, and this in a design sense has translated into the colours and materials predicted to trend as we migrate into the new year,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont Tiles strategic designer.

Terrazzo
The terrazzo trend shows no signs of slowing down

“Zellige style tiles are the embodiment of this movement, celebrating their organic imperfections as opposed to covering them. They have tone-on-tone colour variation and structured glossy surfaces, all emulating their Moroccan birthplace and are a must watch for next year,” says Christie.

Roger Seller Catalano integrated vanities: Floor space is maximised with this space-saving, wall-mounted, integrated vanity range. The vanities feature ample storage, soft-close drawers and come in a choice of natural oak or walnut veneers. From $1499.

From the outdoor bath trend to some rather gorgeous textured tiles and a Sydney accessories pop-up shop, there’s plenty to whet your bathroom appetite this month.

Oliver Thom Sydney pop-up shop: “In the past few years, we noticed there was a gap in the market whereby customers were struggling to find quality bathroom accessories to complement their freshly renovated bathrooms. This is where Oliver Thom comes in,” says Marc Reed, managing director of Candana, the parent company of the brand.

To celebrate one year of trade, the luxe bathroom accessories e-tailer opened a pop-up store in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra this month. It’s obviously ideal for Sydney readers and it’s open until Christmas. Jen’s accessorised her new bathroom with some lovely things from the shop (big reveal coming soon!).

Outdoor baths: Given high-end resorts and hotels continue to invest in outdoor baths, it makes sense that the trend is trickling down to the home. “Outdoor bathing is such a fantastic way to reap the benefits of the outdoors without having to leave the comfort of home,” says Emma Joyce, brand manager at Victoria + Albert Baths.

And for those with limited outdoor space, a bath is a legitimate alternative to a pool – they require less maintenance and are cheaper to run overall. “Consider installing your bath in a shady spot to give you the optimum cool down space during the warmer months,” says Emma.
