Australian kitchen trends: Autumn 2020 edition

From open shelving (perfect for styling up a shelfie), to a stunning coral hued stone and Gaggenau’s new high-tech oven, Autumn kitchen pickings are looking pretty inspiring indeed.

Fibonacci Stone latest: Fibonacci Stone has released four gorgeous new designs. ‘Bloc’ has a grainy grey and black-fleck base (anchored by light to mid-grey Carrera marble chips), while ‘Brackish’ has a subdued palette of white and faded grey. ‘Striker’ is perfect for a contemporary Australian project with its palette of bisque, olive, tan, sand and beige and my personal favourite ‘Coral Underground’ has diamond-like silver grey shards set into the palest coral base. It’s feminine without being girly.

Fisher & Paykel touchscreen built-in oven: These new ovens are equipped with a high resolution digital interface that gives step-by-step instructions for a wide range of pre-loaded recipes. Precise measures and ideal cooking times and temperatures are provided, and the ovens are available in stainless steel and black, or monochromatic all-black.

Caesarstone ‘New Darks’ range: This new range of quartz surfaces was created in response to the black kitchen trend. Suitable for bench tops, splash backs and walls, the collection also introduces a brand new ‘natural’ surface finish – the slightly textured finish emulates the tactile experience of stone, and has a satin sheen and slight grain.

Highlights include ‘Empira Black’ which is a lustrous polished finish with a dense black base and overlay of fine white natural veins. ‘Black Tempal’ combines the new rough ‘natural’ finish with a deep charcoal base which is in direct contrast to the subtle, marbled veil of soft mineral deposits across its surface.

Caesarstone & Wattyl Perfect Pairings II: The collaboration between Caesarstone quartz surfaces and Wattyl paints has been expanded after the initial launch was warmly received by consumers keen to take the guesswork out of what can be a daunting process. Homeowners can access a diverse selection of Caesarstone and Wattyl pairings alongside metallic tapware finishes from Sussex and door cabinetry from Polytec. The latest pairings include terracotta and mustard paint hues (for the more adventurous), as well as more neutral options too.

Gaggenau combi steam oven: Gaggenau’s combi-steam oven not only allows the amateur chef to steam, braise, bake, cook, grill and gratinate, but it’s self-cleaning too.

The latest version of the oven features a fixed water connection. Using a cleaning cartridge, the oven’s water supply descales and removes any heavy soiling from the inside, leaving it pristine in less than four hours. The fresh water connection also means water is constantly available which is a vital feature when cooking using the oven’s sous-vide functionality. The high-tech oven features a temperature probe too. What more could you want?

Glacier, Fiord and Tundra pay homage to the nobility, history and timeless qualities of materials used since ancient times. In these three colours, aesthetic beauty is fused with the fascinating luminosity and high-tech quality.

Glacier: Inspired by natural stone, Glacier displays a fine marbling of a golden colour on a white background. This is a lustrous proposal by virtue of its polished finish, and is an understated, subtle option, due to its remarkable colour. Glacier is the epitome of design, purity and elegance in its all aspects.

Fiord

Fiord: Inspired by nature, Fiord recaptures the beauty of the most luxurious cream tones of Onyx. The original randomness of its design lends a natural, unique and dazzling structure to its finish. Fiord is sophistication in its purest essence.

NATURAL Collection

Tundra: Inspired by natural stone, Tundra offers a white base with grey flecks running through it, which create and highlight unprecedented paths. Tundra, with its candid, authentic appearance, recreates the properties of marble, with its remarkable structure of veins, its sumptuous luminosity and its subtle white background. Dekton launches wood-look, industrial inspired & high gloss options

Engineered stone company Cosentino Australia has expanded its Dekton offering with the launch of six new industrial-inspired shades and the super luminous Dekton XGloss which, like the rest of the Dekton range, can be used to create countertops, flooring and cladding and can be used outside too.

Dekton®_Blaze XGLOSS_Kitchen Countertop

XGloss bench tops in Blaze

The new XGloss range retains the same technical features as the brand’s other offerings (think stain and thermal resistance and water-repellence) but offers high shine. “This commitment stems from an awareness of a growing demand for lustrous, dramatic colours in the world of design, and the realisation that the high-shine materials available in the market until now do not perform well. We therefore wanted to combine beauty with high durability and stain resistance,” says Cosentino product and innovation director Valentin Tijeras.

Dekton®_ color Lumina de XGLOSS_Living Room

Floor in XGloss Lumina

The XGloss collection comes in five colours ranging from pure white to solid black. Halo is a a bright white colour with crystal shine that reflects light, making spaces seem larger while Splendor is a restrained soft grey, ideal for modern kitchens. Dark grey in colour, Blaze has a lovely, subtle metallic finish and Lumina is a very warm, earthy brown.

Dekton®_Valterra_Flooring_2_Sensa_Countertop

Inspired by natural and industrial finishes, the new Dekton colours are an interesting bunch too. Ideal for industrial-themed interiors, the new Dekton Blanc Concrete shade looks like concrete but, unlike the real thing, it won’t deteriorate over time. And for those wanting a truly original finish, the Dekton Trilium option is inspired by metal oxides – a mix of volcanic colours it features intense grey and black tones speckled with light contrasts. We love the matte finish.

The new colours extend into a wood-inspired offering too – Dekton Valterra combines cream with brown hues in a lineal design while Dekton Aldem is a gorgeous gray wood finish.

Neale Whitaker’s 5 tips for creating a Block worthy kitchen

Kitchen week is always my favourite week on The Block. The couples have been planning their kitchens (and budgeting for them) since week one, so it’s usually the week when you see their masterplans really start to take shape. For me the kitchen is the heart of each apartment and I believe it is for buyers too. Real estate guru John McGrath claims that “kitchens and bathrooms sell houses” and he’s right. The kitchens in this series certainly don’t disappoint.

So if you’re planning to renovate yourself, here’s my top five tips for revamping your kitchen, Block style!

1. Plan, plan and then plan again

Ebony and Luke’s kitchen
Ebony and Luke’s kitchen

Kitchen renovations are expensive so you want to make sure that you are really getting the kitchen you need. You need to put your requirements first and think what you like to do in the kitchen, do you like to entertain, is your kitchen the hub of a family home or does it need to double as a dining room or study? Ebony and Luke did this perfectly by making the bold decision to remove a wall in the planning stages of their design.

2. Keep potential buyers in mind

Vonni and Suzi's kitchen
Vonni and Suzi’s kitchen

While you may be renovating the kitchen for you, consider its potential appeal to a buyer should you decide to move on. Kitchens can make or break a sale so it’s always good to have that in mind when you’re choosing surfaces, splashbacks and appliances. Suzi and Vonni thought this through, keeping an entertainer in mind when designing their kitchen, opting for a monochrome colour palette brought to life with contrasting Silestone benchtops in moody grey Carbono and crisp, white Helix for the island.

3. Play it safe with neutral palettes

Kingi and Caro's kitchen
Kingi and Caro’s kitchen

Remember that most of us only fully renovate our kitchens every five-to-10 years. It’s far wiser to choose good-looking neutral surfaces and cabinetry that can be easily and inexpensively updated with new stools, lighting or kitchen accessories. They need a long life so it was great to see that this season’s teams weren’t tempted to choose colours or styles that would age quickly. Kingi and Caro have been smart with a unique design without going overboard — balancing the bolder elements nicely with the fresh tones of Silestone Blanco Zeus on their benches.

4. Storage is crucial

Shay and Dean's kitchen
Shay and Dean’s kitchen

Not everyone can afford the luxury of a butler’s pantry but maximise your storage options in terms of drawers and cupboards. The basic rule is that you can never have enough storage! Think about the task lighting (overhead pendants are hard to beat), the dimensions of the sink and the classic ‘kitchen triangle’ — the distance between cook tops, sink and refrigerator. It’s also worth considering the height and convenience of your appliances. Shay and Dean were smart with their kitchen design to reclaim space and create a hidden butler’s pantry to give future home owners plenty of smart storage solutions.

5. Subtle but smart features

Whitney and Andy's kitchen
Whitney and Andy’s kitchen

Remember that soft-close cabinetry (integrated handles) and concealed appliances will help create a sense of space in the kitchen. Think about the visual impact of a mirrored splashback, not only in terms of reflecting outdoor views but also creating a sense of space. And finally consider the aesthetic relationship between floors, work surfaces, joinery and splashbacks. Modern combinations like Silestone quartz surfaces complemented by timber, brick and matt laminates can look amazing and still feel timeless. Whitney and Andy were on-trend with their Scandi style, with the subtle marbling of Silestone in Lyra for their surfaces contrasting with Ballina Oak timber for their cabinetry.

Neale Whitaker’s 5 tips for a Block-tastic laundry renovation

This season, contestants on The Block have been tasked with a massive challenge, to create stylish, functional spaces in an octagonal-shaped building. I don’t envy them!

Whitney and Andy's Laundry -
Whitney and Andy’s Laundry – featuring the grey-toned Silestone Steel with a slimline 20mm edge.

Last week’s laundry reveals proved particularly interesting, with contestants embracing bold contrasts within the odd-shaped spaces to create unique, modern designs. Now judge Neale Whitaker shares his top tips for designing a Block-tastic laundry!

1. Laundries should take stylistic cues from the kitchen or bathroom

If you’re looking to mix things up in the laundry, be sure to use your kitchen or bathroom for inspiration in terms of tile choice, surfaces and colour palette.

2. Functionality is king

Dean and Shay's laundry -
Dean and Shay’s laundry – featuring the modern shade of Silestone with a 20mm edge.

With so much happening in the laundry, functionality needs to be at the centre of your design plan. Aesthetics are important but purpose is the primary consideration. Nobody says it shouldn’t look good but the laundry is a hard-working room! Dean and Shay have done this perfectly in their laundry, through the strategic positioning of their sink and in-built cabinetry over their bench space.

3. Think of your storage needs

Kingi and Caro's laundry
Kingi and Caro’s laundry – featuring the speckled white of Silestone Blanco Maple Orna with a 20mm edge.

When designing your laundry it’s important to be realistic about your storage needs. Kingi and Caro have definitely thought about this in their design with both short and long cupboards in their space.

4. Neutral palettes are the safest option

Luke and Ebony's Laundry - fetauring
Ebony and Luke’s Laundry – fetauring the stunning Silestone Ariel with a 20mm edge.

Your laundry needs longevity and durability, so neutral palettes are generally the best option. Ebony and Luke have done just that, partnering the muted tones of Silestone Ariel against dark tiling.

5. Non-porous surfaces are your best friend in the laundry

As the laundry is a high traffic and wet space, non-porous surfaces are a must. Four out of the five couples used Cosentino’s Silestone range, as it offers durability against water damage, stains, heat and even knocks and scratches.

Reno inspiration from The Block’s kitchen reveals

While The Block’s kitchen reveals may have left the judges a little disappointed, the organic colours and textured surfaces of the benchtops did manage to invite some enthusiasm!

With the Blockheads picking their surfaces with the help of quartz surface specialists, Cosentino Australia, their colour specialist and showroom manager Ruba Jaajaa now shares her advice with us. Read on to find out how to bring the latest kitchen trends into your home.

Ayden and Jess
Ayden and Jess

Marvellous marble

All four couples on The Block selected marble patterns for their kitchens – a sign that this popular European trend is not going away any time soon. Marble adds depth to any design, with lighter patterns complementing other elements while bold marbling can create a focal point within the room.

Nice and natural

With natural materials continuing to grow in popularity, it’s no surprise that all four couples featured natural elements in their kitchen renovations. From wood and greenery in Dea and Darren’s modern-glam space, to the beautiful contrast of marble tones and timber in both Josh and Charlotte’s and Ayden and Jess’s renovations, natural materials help create a space that strikes a balance between polished and warm.

Darren and Dea

Tempting textures

The Block renovations show that you don’t have to be bold to create a striking space. Adding texture to any room helps add interest to your kitchen. From the rough grain of timber to their showstopping, jewel-toned splashback, Dea and Darren created a kitchen that offers plenty of excitement while still keeping their kitchen design classic.

Durable designs

Kitchens are one of the busiest rooms and one of the biggest investments in a home. With constant traffic, people, plates and food, it makes sense to invest in high-quality products that will not only last, but will look great for many years.

Josh and Charlotte
Josh and Charlotte

Seamless spaces

Like the contestants on The Block, it’s important to consider not just the kitchen but how the space will flow into other rooms within the home. Selecting natural tones and common colours will help create a space that flows seamlessly into adjoining rooms. You can extend this further by using complementary or even matching materials throughout spaces like the kitchen and outdoor areas to create spaces that encourage interaction.

Tim and Anastasia

What the Blockheads used

Kitchen winners Ayden and Jess, selected Silestone Lyra for their traditional, classy kitchen with neutral, veined tones for their benchtop.

Josh and Charlotte and Tim and Anastasia opted for the subtle marbling of Silestone Lagoon.

Darren and Dea chose the charcoal tones of Silestone Cemento Spa with Suede finish for their benches, along with a floating island in Silestone Pulsar to complete their modern, glamorous design.
