Turn your bathroom into a Nordic oasis with Julia and Sasha

Who better to ask about renovating and building than two of our favourite ex- Blockheads? Reece have teamed up with some of our favourite stars from the show to create six new bathrooms and endless inspiration.

Today, we’re checking out the designs of Julia and Sasha who have taken on the trend: Nordic Minimal. With two designs for two budgets (everyday and luxe) they share their tips and tools so you too can transform your bathroom into a Scandinavian oasis.

Everyday Nordic Minimal

A reinterpretation of the popular Scandinavian look for the everyday home. Think muted colours, clean lines and minimal design. Wanting a seamless space, Julia and Sasha made the vanity the feature. “We selected a round shape because it’s soft to work with the theme,” explains Julia. “We then carried the look through to the shower, too.” When money’s tight the duo recommend spending on tapware but saving on tiling, by not tiling every wall.

The luxe version

Create luxury with fine lines, neutral tones and a restrained aesthetic. Feature incredible centrepieces and add interest with a mixture of geometric shapes. “Choose a hero piece,” says Sasha. “Think decadent freestanding baths, indulgent double vanities or dramatic mirrors.” Also spend big on the tapware: “In any bathroom, tapware is the thing you interact with, touch and feel most frequently.” Finally, enrich the room with luxurious materials like a solid surface bench top.

Warm up your bathroom with some Scandi-cool this winter

When you consider the widespread penchant for minimalist design, and the way it is often executed in such a cold and uninviting way, it makes sense that the Scandinavian take on the trend is so wildly popular. Scandinavian design manages to infuse clean lines and clutter free spaces with warmth and appeal in a beautifully understated way – the perfect bathroom inspiration.

With winter very much set in, the bathroom can feel like a cold, uninviting minimalist space but it needn’t be that way. Look to the Scandinavians for simple ways to warm up a space – they’re experts given their ridiculously cold climes

“A pared back Scandinavian style, Nordic minimalism is keeping it simple without being too austere. Hints of soft colour add character to the room which is balanced with imperfect materials such as concrete look tiles and white washed ply,” says interior stylist Bree Leech of the Reece bathroom pictured.

Less is more
Just as Coco Chanel said you should always remove an accessory or one item of clothing before leaving the house, less really can mean more when it comes to Nordic minimalism. Keep your spaces simple and opt for clean lines and a neutral palette. Think baths and sinks with smooth lines and minimal detail. Plus, there are lots of fabulous baths on the market these days that, while spacious inside, are neat and compact in design too.

Fine lines
Bench tops are trending to the slimmer side this year with basins following suit. Thin, delicate edges are big on the bathroom style radar this year –  think paper-fine edges for a super sleek finish.

White on white
When it comes to bathrooms, tone-on-tone white is always a timeless, fresh look. It also looks clean and uncluttered and has enduring appeal.

Bathroom styling ideas with accessories

By Daniela Santilli

A well-designed and accessorised bathroom is key to creating a space full of character. With the bathroom continuing to form part of the wider living zone where bathrooms, bedrooms and dressing rooms become one continuous space, we are noticing a trend toward accessorising in the bathroom as an effective tool for performing a mini facelift and adding life into a once purely functional area of the home.

As spaces in the home become more integrated, so too does the functional and decorative role of furniture, accessories and decorative lighting. Traditional complementary furniture such as mirrors, tall boys and floating cabinetry continue to be important in personalising and creating style in the bathroom space, but we’re also seeing more furniture like stools, chairs and shelves appearing. Creating bathroom products that are both functional and decorative has been a focus for designers, as seen in the stunning Kartell by Laufen collection designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba. This is a great example of this integrated approach, with the polycarbonate mirrors, racks, cabinets and stools as appropriate in the bathroom as they would be elsewhere in the home.

Also providing innovative space-saving solutions are multi-purpose accessories, like the Milli Edge freestanding toilet column which elegantly stores a toilet roll and brush holder. Similarly, the Laufen Pro A wash basin with stand not only looks striking but is a clever way to store towels.

This is a strong indication that customers are using decorative accessories to evolve and add character to their bathroom look. Many ranges are also designed to complement each other, creating families of products to ensure customers are offered a coordinated look, rather than having to search for individual accessories to create a unified style, For example, the Milli and Mizu ranges not only include beautifully designed tapware, they also include a range of matching accessories like soap dishes, toothbrush holders, towel rails, toilet brush holders and soap dispensers.

For an even simpler update, adding small touches can be an effective way to enhance the look and feel of a bathroom. Good quality towels are a worthwhile investment and lend an air of luxury, while scented candles and flowers will make a space feel inviting and reinvigorated. Add a luxurious handwash to the mix to tie the space together and give it a finished look.
