Turn your bathroom into a Nordic oasis with Julia and Sasha

Who better to ask about renovating and building than two of our favourite ex- Blockheads? Reece have teamed up with some of our favourite stars from the show to create six new bathrooms and endless inspiration.

Today, we’re checking out the designs of Julia and Sasha who have taken on the trend: Nordic Minimal. With two designs for two budgets (everyday and luxe) they share their tips and tools so you too can transform your bathroom into a Scandinavian oasis.

Everyday Nordic Minimal

A reinterpretation of the popular Scandinavian look for the everyday home. Think muted colours, clean lines and minimal design. Wanting a seamless space, Julia and Sasha made the vanity the feature. “We selected a round shape because it’s soft to work with the theme,” explains Julia. “We then carried the look through to the shower, too.” When money’s tight the duo recommend spending on tapware but saving on tiling, by not tiling every wall.

Everyday Nordic Minimal

The luxe version

Create luxury with fine lines, neutral tones and a restrained aesthetic. Feature incredible centrepieces and add interest with a mixture of geometric shapes. “Choose a hero piece,” says Sasha. “Think decadent freestanding baths, indulgent double vanities or dramatic mirrors.” Also spend big on the tapware: “In any bathroom, tapware is the thing you interact with, touch and feel most frequently.” Finally, enrich the room with luxurious materials like a solid surface bench top.

Six local brands form The Little Pop Up Shop

What do Sprout and Sparrow, Hello Little Birdie, Homely Creatures, Cream Empire, Sienna Baby and Tutu Du Monde have in common? Well apart from holding super-cute brand names, they have come together to provide you with a boutique collection of kidswear, décor and Nordic interiors.

No 74_-36

Known collaboratively as The Little Pop Up Shop, it was formed when a small, empty shop was discovered by Mel from Hello Little Birdie in Melbourne’s Armadale. She invited Sprout and Sparrow and Tutu Du Monde to join her ambitious adventure (through Instagram), and the rest is history.

No 74_-51

Styled by Mel, The Little Pop Up Shop stocks imported Nordic interior items, from candle holders to Scandinavian furniture (from Hello Little Birdie), as well as contemporary Melbourne-designed children’s wall art, décor (Sprout and Sparrow), quirky cushions, doll houses and timber stools (Homely Creatures).

No 74_-45

You’ll also find exquisite tutus (Tutu Du Monde), baby-smooth leather kids shoes (Sienna Baby) and gorgeous kid’s bed linen (Cream Empire). This lovely little whimsical wonderland popped up in Armadale over the summer and will be there until February.

What’re you waiting for? Pop in to The Little Pop Up Shop.

Scotland and Scandinavia inspire Quercus & Co’s latest collection

I have been in love with Quercus & Co since they released their colour charts late last year, and their newest range, The Handcraft Collection, is no less lovely.

A wallpaper company, Quercus & Co’s designs are full of pattern and colour and are what the team likes to call ‘art-paper for walls’ rather than traditional wallpaper. The Handcraft Collection is a set of large-scale designs, all drawn with coloured pencil on a softly mottled paper background. This design process took six months from conception to completion!

“When designing new patterns, I start by creating a mock-up wall in Photoshop where I can quickly apply found images and sketches,” explains director Adam Jones. “Once a pattern is chosen, it’s literally to the drawing board where the art work is hand drawn or painted in full-scale. The drawings are then scanned, cleaned and stitched together in Photoshop and colour is applied. The process is long and time-consuming.”

Inspired by traditional Nordic and Scottish patterns, each design comes in six different colours, with names like Thor, Freya, Wolfsbane and Wildflower.

Having grown up in the UK, this collection saw Adam reflect back on his early childhood, where at school, he was taught to knit and weave by his folky teacher. This influence of textiles and craft is very much apparent, especially in such designs as Fair Isle.

The idea to focus on Scotland was also inspired by Adam’s UK upbringing (he grew up on the English/Welsh border). Through his research, he found the patterns he liked from Scotland actually stretched all the way to Scandinavia. “I found the patterns to be the same across the whole of Northern Europe. Latvian mittens are very much like Scottish jumpers! It also connects with the current trend for all things Scandinavian: fresh, light, natural, handmade, so that was another inspiration.”

The Handcraft Collection is also available in a selection of art prints and wall hangings. Information on how to purchase here.
