Interview: DesignByThem celebrate 10 years of Aussie design

10 years ago, in their final semester of university, Sarah Gibson and Nick Karlovasitis began brainstorming an idea for a business. Studying industrial design they were surrounded by young furniture designers chasing representation from companies overseas. It was a tough slog! So they decided to create DesignByThem, a brand that promoted Australian design and provided a viable platform for designers.

Sarah and Nick

Designing furniture themselves and collaborating with a stellar cohort of Australian designers; as the brand have grown in size, so too have their products. “Initially we designed mainly smaller accessories – maybe because we were designing out of an apartment and couldn’t fit anything else,” explains Sarah. “But slowly, as we kept moving to bigger and bigger spaces our products have become bigger too. The Cabin range is sure proof of that!”

Working from home for the business’ first few months, storage was at a premium, with the garage stocked full of prototypes. Time was spent designing and raising awareness, so that DesignByThem could reach their goal of supporting fellow designers. “The scale of our collection is really what we’ve focused on over the years,” says Sarah. “Development started slowly and sped up as we surrounded ourselves with a great network of talented designers, manufacturers and staff.”

Bow Chair

With some 70 designs in their collection, featuring the work of Aussie talents like Stefan Lie, Trent Jansen, Tommy Cehak and many more, DesignByThem creates products that are consistent and true to their design ethos. “Rather than seeking to stand out we seek to be a brand with longevity,” explains Sarah. “Hopefully with products that are original and timeless, although this is a very hard thing to do. We plan to be around for a long time, and hope our considered approach is respected in the long term too.”

Baker Table and Butter Stools

Their broad range makes it’s hard to pick a favourite, but for Sarah, it’s the Butter Stool and Cabin Lounge: “For its playfulness, comfort and flexibility.” While for Nick, it’s the Piper Chair and the TomTom Letterbox (which Jen has and adores!): “I love the way people love this product, it’s endearing to see people’s reactions to it. This was also our first collaboration, with designer Tommy Cehak, who came up with the concept of people wanting to represent their style at the front gate.”

Now gaining traction overseas, particularly in the US, DesignByThem has some exciting prospects for the next 10 years and beyond. “We’ve seen the business move gradually to the overseas market so we’re excited to see where this takes us,” says Sarah. “We’ve also got some exciting new collections and collaborations happening early next year and plan on continuing the current momentum of designs and ideas.”

Locally crafted furniture you can pass down for generations

After an impressive international career working for well-known furniture companies and architecture studios, Anne-Claire Petre decided to finally bring her sketchbooks to life, creating her own range of eco-friendly, locally crafted furniture.

anaca studio 2

Offered under her brand anaca studio, Anne-Claire design furniture and accessories using sustainable timbers, materials and finishes, each made to order in her Melbourne workshop. Currently focusing on smaller items that fit easily into all interiors, her pieces are practical, beautiful and most importantly, long-lasting. “anaca studio is proud to create inspiring furniture that is built to last,” explains Anne-Claire. “Adding to landfill is not our aim, not in business and not in life. We build finely crafted furniture that has integrity, that you would be proud to own and pass on to the next generation as our parents and grandparents did.”

anaca studio 4

With an individual contemporary style, the lines are simple and minimalist with a touch of Japanese-cross-Danish inspiration — all mixed with Anne-Claire’s French background! “I like to think the products have their own personality, some a bit fun and quirky, some a little more serious. In the anaca studio family portrait there’s not a dodgy haircut or novelty jumper in sight, just sleek lines and contemporary finishes.”

Primarily using timber, Anne-Claire’s favourite pieces see timber mixed with steel. “I love the quality, texture and warmth that timber offers and enjoy mixing and contrasting this with the cold hard metal element. I am using a powdercoat finish on the steel for its environmental properties and also because it can offer a wide variety of colours.”

However that said, Anne-Claire isn’t fixated on just the one look, having some grand ideas for the future. “Next up, I want to work with more upholstery. I love playing with fabrics and leathers so it’s a natural progression for anaca.”

So to put a bit more versatility into our lives and to give a shout out to all those amazing Aussie brands, we’ve pulled together six more unique stools for your breakfast bar.

Online shopping fix: Ipso Mofo

Stocking furniture and homewares that are “a tad out of the ordinary,” Ipso Mofo is a no-nonsense, non-pretentious online store, focusing on quality, colourful, quirky lifestyle products from independent makers.

ipso mofo

Featuring wares largely designed and manufactured in Europe, there’s nothing mass-produced or made in China in sight! With all their brands being small indie producers, founder Paul Noe started Ipso Mofo after struggling to find products for his own home. “Other than the usual high street stores, we would either find lots of Chinese made replica furniture or at the other end of the scale, high-end products that were out of the average person’s price range. We felt there was a gap in the mid market in Australia for cool design products made by boutique brands that you wouldn’t have to sell the car to afford.”

Proudly the only Australian stockist for all their brands, Ipso Mofo takes a fresh, tongue in cheek approach, by not taking themselves too seriously (you’ll definitely have a laugh or two browsing through their website). With a style that is “anti-minimalist”, more quirky brands will be added soon, with Paul also hoping to start offering Ipso MoFo as a platform for Australian-made products. “We would love to represent more Aussie brands and give some upcoming designers an outlet to show off their stuff.” Watch this space!

Online shopping fix: Smoke & Stone

Listen up concrete lovers, there’s a new duo in town! With husband and wife, Scott and Alex Goodsir, having recently released a timeless collection of concrete side tables and decor.

IMG_3257_1024x1024

Their Newcastle business, Smoke & Stone, began only late last year when the couple started making concrete wares for their own home. With Scott having a background in concrete construction and cabinetry, and Alex having a love of furniture and homewares (which she admits were a bit too pricey for her to afford!), they decided the best bet was to make affordable pieces of their own.

IMG_3181_1024x1024

Not soon after, they added a website, began trading and the rest is history. With a range of bowls, planters, coasters, stools and side tables on offer, we personally can’t go past their Mr & Mrs Tri side tables, which feature beautifully crafted hairpin legs (in plain or colour). Extremely versatile you can use one as a bedside or pair two or more together to create a unique coffee table or sideboard.

Bathroom styling ideas with accessories

By Daniela Santilli

A well-designed and accessorised bathroom is key to creating a space full of character. With the bathroom continuing to form part of the wider living zone where bathrooms, bedrooms and dressing rooms become one continuous space, we are noticing a trend toward accessorising in the bathroom as an effective tool for performing a mini facelift and adding life into a once purely functional area of the home.

As spaces in the home become more integrated, so too does the functional and decorative role of furniture, accessories and decorative lighting. Traditional complementary furniture such as mirrors, tall boys and floating cabinetry continue to be important in personalising and creating style in the bathroom space, but we’re also seeing more furniture like stools, chairs and shelves appearing. Creating bathroom products that are both functional and decorative has been a focus for designers, as seen in the stunning Kartell by Laufen collection designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba. This is a great example of this integrated approach, with the polycarbonate mirrors, racks, cabinets and stools as appropriate in the bathroom as they would be elsewhere in the home.

Milli Edge Freestanding Toilet Column

Also providing innovative space-saving solutions are multi-purpose accessories, like the Milli Edge freestanding toilet column which elegantly stores a toilet roll and brush holder. Similarly, the Laufen Pro A wash basin with stand not only looks striking but is a clever way to store towels.

[contextly_sidebar id=”efpEWHGTw2yBt3zMTGyQmpFBbfL50DNK”]In our recent survey, we were surprised to see mirrors emerging as the fourth most important item in the bathroom. This is a strong indication that customers are using decorative accessories to evolve and add character to their bathroom look. Many ranges are also designed to complement each other, creating families of products to ensure customers are offered a coordinated look, rather than having to search for individual accessories to create a unified style, For example, the Milli and Mizu ranges not only include beautifully designed tapware, they also include a range of matching accessories like soap dishes, toothbrush holders, towel rails, toilet brush holders and soap dispensers.

For an even simpler update, adding small touches can be an effective way to enhance the look and feel of a bathroom. Good quality towels are a worthwhile investment and lend an air of luxury, while scented candles and flowers will make a space feel inviting and reinvigorated. Add a luxurious handwash to the mix to tie the space together and give it a finished look.

From old Nudie Jeans to cool interior wares

Instead of chucking away their old jeans, Swedish fashion label Nudie Jeans Co have started The Nudie Jeans Recycle Project, seeking to find a new use for that worn-out denim.

nudie interiors addict 3

With the goal to recycle every fibre, their first two products (which used 90% of every pair of jeans) are two beautiful interior wares: the Rag Rug and the In-and-Out Seam Camper Seat.

The inspiration for the seats originated from one of Sweden’s favourite pastimes, camping. Beautifully braided by hand with a simple construction, they were created using the inseam and out seam of nine pairs of rigid Nudie jeans, one belt and one leather patch. The foldable camper seats are made in a limited run of 250, which each one being unique. They retail for $299 each.

The Swedish tansmatta — also known as rag rug — is made from the shredded pieces of the leftover denim used for the seats! Coming in two sizes, the Lill-Mat, which is the smaller of the two, measures 140 x 70 centimetres. Produced in a limited run of 275 pieces, they retail for $499 each. The Stor-Mats, which are larger in size, measure 240 x 170 centimetres. Produced in a limited run of just 75, they retail for $899 each.

TUCKBOX’s debut collection has the wow factor

The first collection by Melbourne’s TUCKBOX really caught my eye. I discovered it on social media recently (where all the good stuff is) and had to know more.

TUCKBOX_15

TB_Team

Did I mention there’s copper involved? Say no more!

The Klein collection comprises of a number of stools/side tables in various heights, a coffee table and a wall mountable hallway table for tight spaces. Let’s face it, we could all find a space or use for one of the beauties, whether it’s as bedsides, next to a freestanding bath tub, at the breakfast bar, around a table or next to the lounge for your cuppa and book.

TB_7

If you don’t see exactly what you’re after, the good news is, you can customise too. Just contact them with your ideas.

TUCKBOX_103

The collection represents the journey of its designer and maker, Dan de Groot, from a cool design office in London to a dusty shed full of timber, steel and old machinery in Melbourne’s north. Dan, an industrial designer, started the business with his brother Ant and wife Prue over a long lunch in December last year. They had an idea for furniture that embraced the shadows and light of the Australian seasons, with simple lines and a modern character.

TUCKBOX_105

“At the heart of this collection is the ability to customise. From our timber top shapes, to finishes, sizes and base colours, there is so much flexibility,” Dan explains. “We like seeing the character of our products change when the customising takes place and customers make them their own.”

Responding to increasingly compact urban environments, pieces in the Klein collection are designed to work in smaller spaces, be stackable, transport easily and become loved items in your home or workspace.

We’re looking forward to seeing what they come up with next!

Luxxbox’s latest seating range is as deceiving as it is beautiful

The latest offering by furniture, lighting and object studio Luxxbox, is as deceiving as it is beautiful. Entitled the Pillow Collection, what initially looks like a soft upholstered seat is really a heavy-duty moulded low profile chair, stool, or high chair.

Copy of Train scene full

The beauty of this seemingly delicate design is the juxtaposition of several high performing materials, with the leg variations including natural or black stained American Oak or the impressive copper legs. It’s this versatility within the range and countless color configurations which allow it to extend to indoor and outdoor applications both in residential and commercial settings.

Copy of Luxxbox - Pillow stool

The brainchild of Luxxbox founder and creative director Jason Bird, who is based in Melbourne, the designs are an idea he had been toying with for quite some time: “I’ve been playing with the idea of this design for nearly 10 years – the key design elements of the collection, the soft-look top, the integration between this and the timber legs and the sleek chair profiles. It has taken this long for design technology and production techniques to develop to a point where we could achieve the fantastic juxtaposition between a moulded top and timber legs.”

Prices start at $227, available through Luxxbox.
