Boost to industry as Decor + Design in-person event returns to Melbourne

This July, Australia’s number one interiors trade event is making a triumphant return to Melbourne. After the challenges of the past year, the 18th edition of Decor + Design and the Australian International Furniture Fair will give the design industry an important boost and the opportunity to do business in person.

From Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 July, Melbourne Exhibition Centre will transform into an interior design village of beautifully curated style inspiration. Decor + Design and the Australian International Furniture Fair will exhibit the latest in indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, textiles, workspace design and contemporary art.

Featured speakers at this year’s International Seminar Series will include interior designer, presenter and style writer, James Treble, top designers Mim Fanning, Cameron Kimber, Jeremy Bull, Adelaide Bragg and Thomas Hamel, plus design authorities Robyn Holt and Interiors Addict’s very own Jen Bishop.

“We’re are super excited to bring Australia’s premier networking and buying event for the design industry back to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre in 2021,” says event director Chris May.

“This industry is all about the senses and experiencing products in real life – something we’ve all sorely missed over the past year! Many long term and exciting new exhibitors will be showcasing classic and contemporary styles and launching new products at the 2021 show.”

It’s an important annual destination for retailers, interior designers, decorators and architects. The events will feature a spectacular line-up of exhibitors, including Satara, Bisque Interiors, Cromwell, Darcy & Duke, James Stewart Furniture, LaGrolla, Cooper Black, Wisteria Design, LaForma Australia, Warwick Fabricks, Calibre Furniture, Vetro Furniture, L&M Home and Tantra.

With international travel still effectively embargoed, international perspectives will be provided via exclusive virtual seminars. Victoria Redshaw, popular futurist of leading UK trend forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, will bring an international perspective with her major design trends forecast.

Another event highlight will be James Treble’s daily practical design trend tours, where he will translate this year’s trends to the products available on the show floor.

As well as the impressive speaker line up, visitors are invited to experience a new sustainability hub curated by Design Matters, the VIVID Design Awards, and the Trends Champagne Lounge.

2021 also marks the 18th anniversary of VIVID, Australia’s most prestigious design awards program. Judged by a panel of prominent and respected industry figures, this highly anticipated industry platform is an important destination for designers at the show.

VIVID will once again cover an array of categories including furniture design, lighting design, object design, concept design, the ADA Award of Merit, the VIVID 2021 Judges Choice Award and the Houzz People’s Choice Award.

Google Home Max: a smart, stylish and powerful speaker

In exciting news for tech lovers, Google Home Max launches tomorrow and not only is it the loudest smart speaker yet from Google, it’s also the best looking and debuts some fabulous new features.

Google Home Max speaker
The Google Home Max speaker blends in seamlessly on this kitchen bench top

Smart Sound
The first Google speaker with Smart Sound, it’s helpful to think of it as AI for your ears. Once you’ve set the speaker up, it adapts to your home environment and will automatically tune itself based on where you’ve placed it in the room. If you move it to the other side of the room it will adapt within seconds.

It’s loud!
With two 4.5-inch woofers (each with 22mm of excursion), the speaker delivers an extremely high range for its size, with particularly powerful bass that sounds clean at high volumes. And at 20 times more powerful than the original Google Home, this little guy is extremely loud and will fill any room with pumping audio.

It’s super stylish
If you could call a speaker beautiful, with its minimal lines, Google Home Max certainly is. And not only can you stand it up vertically or place it horizontally to fit in your space, it’s made from gorgeous, durable fabric too.

Voice technology
Google Home Max contains a built-in Google Assistant that is always ready to start your favourite song, pause or turn it up – all with just your voice. Possibly the coolest function is the Assistant’s ability to find a song with just a line of the lyrics or a few small details. Just ask “Hey Google, play that song that goes, ‘Rebel just for kicks,’” for instance. What’s even more impressive about this functionality is that it works even when the speaker is blasting. The technology is able to separate your voice from the background noise, even if you’re across the room!

Using the Voice Match technology, the Google Assistant can recognise your voice and up to five others within your home so you can all access your music services and personal playlists. When Voice Match is set up, the Assistant will play your favourite playlist, and not your partner’s, for example.

Endless music options
You can use your voice to play music services such as Spotify or YouTube Music through the speaker. Through casting, you can access hundreds of compatible apps to stream in high-quality over Wi-Fi from your phone, tablet or laptop. You can also listen to songs over Bluetooth, or plug in your record player using an analogue stereo cable.

Seamless pairing throughout the home
Google Max works seamlessly with Google Home, Google Home Mini and hundreds of Chromecast built-in speakers. All you have to do is create a speaker group in the Google Home app and you can play the same song in sync on all the compatible speakers in your home. You can also stereo pair another Google Max for an even wider soundstage.

Control your smart home
You can make the speaker the centre of your smart home as it works with more than 5000 devices worldwide, and more than 100 home automation devices from more than 50 brands in Australia including Nest, Belkin TP-Link and Phillips Hue.

Also, if you have a compatible smart plug and bulbs, try saying, “Hey Google, dim the lights, play a summer time playlist,” for impressive multi-tasking.

Google Home Max, RRP $549, is available from JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, David Jones, The Good Guys, Officeworks and The Google Store.

REVIEW TIME: Jen just got her hands on a speaker to review and her husband Damian, a former consumer tech journalist, will be reviewing it for us later this month! They’re already fans of the affordable Google Home Mini but let’s face it, it’s not the best sound quality!

Tech news: From Google Home to high-tech baby monitors

Unlike my fellow millennials technology doesn’t get my blood pumping… but I do make some exceptions. Enter Google Home.

After taking over The States, the voice-activated speaker has landed Down Under. Just say “Ok Google” and a distinctly Aussie voice will make everyday life that much easier.

Need to solve a problem? Ask questions, translate phrases, run maths calculations and get definitions. Too busy to stay on top of the news? Ask and you shall receive from the likes of ABC NEWS, The Australian and Huffington Post. Need a helping hand in the kitchen? Get substitutes, nutritional information and unit conversions without having to wash your flour covered fingers. Or ready to party? Play songs, playlists, artists, and albums from your favourite music subscription services.

Up to six people can connect their account to one Google Home, so if you ask your Assistant to tell you about your day, it can distinguish your voice from other people in your family and give you personalised answers.

Google Home is available now for $199 via The Google Store, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, The Good Guys, Telstra, Optus and Qantas Store.

And in other tech news (which admittedly Jen’s more excited by than me!) NETGEAR has launched its new, smart baby monitor solution, Arlo Baby. Coming in three super cute designs — a puppy, kitty and bunny — it has a range of innovative features such as a music player, ambient sensors for monitoring air quality, temperature and humidity, plus a built-in multi-coloured night light. In terms of its actual monitoring capabilities, it goes above and beyond too. Not only can you access the video remotely and live stream and record, you can listen and talk with two-way audio.

The Arlo Baby Smart HD Monitoring Camera will be available in August for $399 from major retailers in store and online.

Bang & Olufsen celebrate 90 years with rose gold collection

During the roaring 20s, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen started their journey into technology, and with the accompanying flourish of Art Deco it was clear that luxury, glamour and exuberance were at the heart of the time. Fast-forward 90 years and the company has launched a collection that truly captures the mood and style of that era.

Review: Sonos Wireless Speaker System

Former consumer technology journalist for the likes of T3, GQ and Men’s Health and Jen’s husband, Damian Francis, reviews the Sonos Wireless Speaker System.

One of the biggest challenges for the home owner today is concealing wires. What a fantastically interesting topic! But the reality is, today’s modern homes are small technology hubs — connected environments that are meant to make life easier and more entertaining. With technology comes wires. How many are sprouting from your TV right now? Mine looks like Medusa’s head on steroids. I’ve done a bang up job hiding those wires behind an entertainment unit the size of the QM2. Strangely Jen doesn’t seem to be too thrilled with this solution.

The Play 1 speaker

So how do you overcome it? The truth is, it’s tricky. Cull the wires and you often cull the quality, keep the quality and you add serious expense. How many times has Kevin McCloud waxed lyrical about a great built-in system that had to be heavily researched and then installed in a house at build-stage? When it comes to sound systems though, it is now a hell of a lot easier with Sonos.

Why Sonos?

Sonos was one of the first brands to produce a wireless solution for sound systems that didn’t sound like a spluttering 1970 VW Beetle, didn’t have the price tag of a Porsche and actually looked like something you would want to put in your home. I was a technology journalist when the brand first made waves — it caught the attention of a number of my colleagues, which is no mean feat.

Let’s cut to the chase. You want a Sonos because you’re tired of wires cluttering your home, you want versatility in your system to play music in a single room or throughout your house, you want a system that blends in with modern decor and you don’t want to have to remortgage your house or cut into walls to get any of the above.

Out of the box

Interiors Addict had a set of two Play:1 speakers ($329 each) and a Connect ($599) to test. Installation is as simple as taking the speaker out of the box, plugging it into the powerpoint and following the simple and quick step-by-step instructions to get the first speaker working. Adding more is even easier, with the process taking no more than a couple of minutes. And trust me, if you want to make the most of Sonos, you want more than a single Play:1 unit.

The Connect Amplifier
The Sonos Connect

There are a range of sizes and accessories to suit most needs — such as Play:1 small speakers for smaller rooms like I have in our house or the Connect which connects to wired stereo systems. But you can also get larger Play:3 and Play:5 systems as well as a Soundbar and Subwoofer. All are set up in a similar fashion and all can be used solo or grouped together.

Playing music is a fairly simple process. You download the Sonos controller on your laptop, tablet or mobile device and you can then play music from that device or use a range of popular services like Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn Radio and much more to play music. The Sonos controller also allows you to name your speakers, join them together to form a stereo sound system, play music in more than one room at the same time, change your speakers’ settings and more. Start using your smartphone and then move to using your iPad, for example, and you will pick up where you left off with your playlist rather than having to start from scratch.

controller-ios-tablet-music-menu

The quirks

While it is relatively simple to use, it still has some quirks which can become a little annoying. It’s not always as simple as finding what you want and pressing play. While that’s not a big deal, it can grate a bit. In some cases it would be much better to be able to use the standard app, such as Spotify, rather than having to use the Sonos controller app to control your Spotify account with your speakers.

The real world test was getting Jen to use the app on her smartphone. She got it, but it took a little while and there were some really good questions as to why certain aspects weren’t simpler.

Also, bear in mind that Sonos is not a bluetooth speaker. You may use it with your computer or smartphone, but it is different to a bluetooth setup and therefore can’t be used like a bluetooth speaker. Big deal? Not at all – but if you’re after a bluetooth speaker, buy one.

Being that the Sonos system is meant to be a home music solution, sound quality is of greater importance than most speakers you would associate with control via your laptop or mobile device. Thankfully it’s good. But let’s qualify that. My Honda CR-V is good — plenty of space, cheap to run, good looking. But I’ll still get smashed off the lights by a Porsche Cayenne. The story is similar for the Sonos Play:1, which I tested at home, and other systems which I have tested previously, such as the Play:3 and Play:5.

Sonos offers great bang for buck. The sound is loud and travels further through your house than you would imagine. But it’s bass heavy, and treble can become murky, making certain genres of music more enjoyable to listen to on the Sonos than others. Adding speakers together, such as two Play:1s for a left and right channel system, helps but it doesn’t completely solve the problem. Despite this, the music is still enjoyable to listen to and I would argue that if you wanted better clarity through your highs, you should spend more money on a higher end system.

The result

When it comes to the crunch, the Sonos products are well priced and well designed, with adequate sound quality. They are well thought out and relatively easy to use. If you want a wireless solution that won’t require remodelling of your home or your bank account, it is hard to go wrong with a Sonos system. Play:1 will suit apartments or small rooms, Play:3 will suit lounge rooms and medium-sized areas, but for open plan areas, go for a Play:5… or two.

Whoever heard of sustainable and stylish speakers?

Not supporting the notion of a throwaway society, the team behind Bruns Acoustics have created premium analog wireless speakers that are built to last.

bruns acoustics

Aiming to inspire others to take responsibility for the impact they have on the environment, their Timbre speakers are a mix of old world craftsmanship, modern technology and most simply, they’re beautiful looking speakers (I seriously want one!). Made by hand in their workshop in Brunswick Heads, NSW, each individual speaker takes just over two weeks. Each is built using only the highest quality materials, including salvaged Australian timber, hand-dyed Australian leather and stainless steel hardware.

bruns acoustics 2

Coming in two styles, the relic series has worn finishes, aged parts, rusted hardware and nostalgic colour, giving a definite vintage vibe. In contrast, the classic series is inspired by the natural beauty of premium timber, with each speaker being grain matched from a single piece.

Created by a small group of designers and audio professionals who decided to leave the corporate world for a more environmentally conscious way of living, these speakers aim to bring back the old world value of having products made to last a lifetime.

The speakers retail for $899 each. Shop online.
