Concrete and brass bathroom update is luxe and warm

Nestled in the Sydney coastal suburb of North Curl Curl, this 20-year-old bathroom got a stylish upgrade recently by interior designer Deanne Crowther, of Bathrooms by Oldham. And while there was nothing ‘wrong’ with the former space, the new bathroom is not only more functional but it’s much more beautiful too.

“Our client wanted to update their ensuite while retaining its layout. They wanted a concrete inspired bathroom whilst keeping it soft and warm,” says Deanne. A modern, timeless look ensued courtesy of a trio of gorgeous finishes; concrete, brass and American oak.

One of the major contributors to the transformation is the tile selection – smaller white tiles were replaced with concrete-look 600mm x 600mm porcelain ones. “Choosing a large tile throughout the bathroom gives the illusion of a bigger space,” says Deanne.

The tired white cabinetry was usurped by a custom American oak vanity and new mirrored shaving cabinet. “Underneath, we designed a custom concrete bench top with brass plug and waste,” says Deanne.

The metallic finish is repeated throughout the space via Wood Melbourne aged brass tapware as well as a nearby in-wall toilet cistern that features a brass flush plate. “The aged brass will change over time giving the bathroom an ever changing look,” says Deanne.

The vanity unit also houses concealed strip lighting on a sensor – a luxe ‘extra’ that is useful for late night bathroom trips. “It adds an element of luxury and highlights the design features in the space. It also runs under the wall hung vanity which makes the room feel larger,” says Deanne.

Storage niches were installed on both sides of the shower providing a place to store things within the shower, and a space to add decorative pieces on the other side. And aside from a new niche, the shower area now features a luxe brass rain shower head.

“Ultimately I love that we created the ensuite our client desired. The coolness of concrete combined with antique brass accessories and American oak joinery achieved the warmth and softness she was after.”

Four generations of quality, timeless brass hardware

“I often liken hardware to jewellery for the home, it’s the pearl necklace that you put on last when going out for a celebratory dinner,” says Gregory McGrail of Gregory Croxford Living, a purveyor of stylish, timeless and eclectic solid brass knobs and handles that are built to last.

Gregory Croxford
Gregory Croxford Living’s stylish hardware is the icing on the cake in this kitchen

And if anyone knows about hardware it’s Gregory – he represents the fourth generation of the family brass business Armac Brassworks (it was later renamed Armac Martin) that had its beginnings in 1929 in the UK when it was established by Gregory’s great grandfather, Harold McGrail. “Armac Brassworks was predominantly a manufacturer of reproduction furniture fittings. Harold stayed at the helm of the Armac Group until his retirement in 1988 aged 83, successfully leading the business through the most difficult of periods in the second world war. The company was even commissioned by the UK government to manufacture parts for the Spitfire planes the British used during the war,” says Gregory.

Gregory Croxford

“It’s easier connecting the dots looking back, I was always destined to be involved in the family business, we often joke that McGrails have brass running through their blood,” says Gregory who started working in the business as a teenager, on the factory floor before moving into a sales role. Gregory relocated to Sydney over five years ago and established Gregory Croxford Living – a distribution arm for the Armac Group of brands that includes Armac Martin, Frank Allart and Turnstyle Designs. He also manages offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong where he works primarily on high-end commercial projects.

Gregory McGrail
Gregory McGrail

The latest range, the Armac Martin ‘MIX’ Collection, has an industrial yet traditional feel that complements both contemporary and modern interiors.“We wanted to offer hardware that modernises traditional hardware with sleek and contemporary designs that encourage new conversations around cabinetry,” says Gregory who likes a wide wide range of aesthetics from super traditional to minimalism and everything in between. “Good design is much like good art, it must stir your emotions and move your bones somewhat,” says Gregory.

Gregory Croxford

“Currently I see neo-traditional architecture influencing fixtures and fittings throughout the home – contemporary architecture that borrows from the past which is very Armac Martin as we embrace our history and all that we’ve learned and put it into product design. We are fortunate to work with world class products and I like to think that quality is always on trend too,” says Gregory.

Gregory Croxford

And as for the capacity for beautiful, quality hardware to completely lift a home’s design, Gregory is passionately resolved. “It was the Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa that said, ‘the door handle is the handshake of the building!’”

Black tapware leader, Meir, launches stunning new metallics

Sponsored by Meir Australia

Not satisfied with having the largest range of black tapware in the world, thriving Australian business Meir has branched into mixed metals. And they’re gorgeous! I’m earmarking them for my future bathroom renos right now!

Tiger Bronze

Those in the know will confirm that the trend for black taps is most definitely here to stay but other colours (basically, anything but been-there-done-that chrome) are emerging as future classics too. And this was clear at all the big international design trade fairs this year.

The Melbourne family business have spent the last 12 months behind the scenes working on the new additions to their premium matte black tapware. Tiger Bronze and Champagne are the first of four upcoming colour finishes to be released in as many months and here at Interiors Addict, we are in love! Tiger Bronze is a unique combination of bronze and copper and Champagne is a beautiful cool gold.

Bath, shower and kitchen mixers, shower heads, toilet roll holders, towel rails, wall and basin mixers are all available.

Champagne

Today’s bathrooms are so much more than utilitarian spaces; they’re sanctuaries. And consumers are keener than ever to add a little luxury and personality to this space. We think tapware is the jewellery of the modern bathroom. And even if you’re reluctant to be too ‘out there’ with your bathroom choices, statement tapware on a simple and classic subway tile backdrop for example, can make a huge impact.

Equally, in kitchens, that mixer tap can be the crowning glory.

“We’ve been working with leading Australian architects to create a range that’s the very essence of luxury tapware. This product also fulfils consumer demand on modern colour trends,” says CEO Rick Bazerghi. “By limiting the Tiger Bronze selection to a small portion of our overall range of products, it offers customers an exclusive and bespoke product.”

Tiger Bronze

Handcrafted and made with European parts, this premium range is priced higher than its traditional chrome or matte black counterparts. It’s available to the general public through any of the company’s stockists (including Reece and Harvey Norman Commercial) or online at The Block Shop.

Meir is showcasing Australia as a leader in bathroom trends, expanding internationally this year with a London office and distributors in Amsterdam, Cape Town and Auckland. They have plans to open up offices and distribution in Dubai, Singapore, Denmark and Japan.

Tiger Bronze

Customers benefit from a no-questions-asked returns policy and excellent customer service, with a receptionist available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

west elm’s winter collection preview: Amy’s top 10 picks

west elm’s winter collection arrived in my inbox this week and I was rather taken with it for a couple of reasons. Not only is the colour palette entirely sumptuous (think teal, chartreuse, navy and jade green) but I love how it combines lashings of abstract art with statement brass and earthy, handmade details.

Wire frame dining chair: Inspired by mid-century school chairs it’s the upholstery colours, combined with brass, that I love most about this design. $249.

Brass flamingo object: I’m a sucker for flamingoes and this little guy is no exception. He’s part of a wider story that includes a toucan and leopard too. Adore! $49.

Frameless mirrors:  Featuring bevelled edges and a variety of organic shapes, these mirrors are super versatile and just that little bit different. From $149.

Abstract brushstroke salad plate: Featuring a painterly pattern and real gold leaf trim, this plate is sure to take your setting up a notch. $16.

Terrace stripe pouf: Looped yarns and lurex combine to create this versatile boho-infused piece that works equally well as extra seating as it does as a foot stool. $349.

Pomegranate rug in ivory: A modern take on ikat, this gorgeous rug’s pattern was inspired by its namesake. From $699.

Arlo six-drawer dresser: This piece’s mid-century lines are nothing new for the brand but I love the addition of the metal rimmed recessed drawer handles. $1,499.

Spun metal standing planter: I adore this brass pot and its super slim legs are an elegant touch. From $99.

Soleil metal plant screen in yellow: Made for use inside and out, this number holds eleven pots and is not only fabulous for creating a green wall (trailing devil’s ivy would look fabulous on it) but for partitioning spaces too. $349.

Azur shag rug: A modern take on a Moroccan Beni Ourain rug, this 100 per cent cotton one is super soft underfoot. From $399.

Bang & Olufsen adds warmer touch with new brass collection

The new Cool Modern Collection combines the iconic design and cool Nordic minimalism of Bang & Olufsen with gleaming, brass-toned aluminium structures and dark beautiful textile colours to create a warm, polished ambience.

bla18-cmc-13sk-a09

Inspired by the Art Deco movement of the roaring 20s (also the same time as Bang & Olufsen was founded), the collection introduces an entirely new style choice to the B&O universe, by presenting a line of its most popular sound systems, speakers and televisions draped in warm colours, rarely seen in electronic products.

bso1-cmc-16xx-a01

There are also two new jewel-toned fabric colours for speaker covers: Purple Heart delivers a warm nuance of aged wine and dark heather, while Parisian Night suggests a velvety deep blue night sky.

As part of the new collection, BeoLab 18 and BeoVision 14 are fitted with smoked oak lamellas on the speaker covers. They are paired with new matte black stands and wall mounts to ensure a cohesive interaction with the soft glow from the new brass-toned frame. Other products available include the new BeoVision 14 television, the wireless music system BeoSound 35, the iconic BeoLab 18 speakers, and the wireless speakers system BeoSound 1 and BeoSound 2.

Brass beauty: Pittella reprises original 1950’s door handles

From architecture to furniture and accessories, mid-century design remains highly coveted in the interiors world and now you can even satisfy your retro door handle requirements too. Designed by mid-century Italian designer Sergio Asti and handcrafted from solid brass, Pittella’s ‘50’s Collection’ of door handles launches this month and we’re pretty smitten with their beautiful shapes and the brushed brass finish.

Pittella_066 Door Handle_Satin Brass_04
Pittella 066 door handle in satin brass

A faithful reproduction of the original design, the handles are made using modern manufacturing methods and are available in polished or satin chrome and satin brass. These beauties have been created using Asti’s original design drawings and aside from their obvious aesthetic appeal, the handles (like so much mid-century design) have been designed with ergonomics in mind too – the grip is pure comfort in the hand.

Pittella_066 Door Handle_Satin Brass_03
Pittella 066 door handles

Part of MOMA’s permanent collection in New York, the Pittella 066 door handle is considered an exemplar of the mid-century design era and it features a subtle, understated twist that gives it an almost organic vibe.

Pittella_069 Door Handle_Satin Chrome_02

The Pittella 069 door handle is a slender, classic handle characterised by its curved shape.

Pittella_070 Door Handle_Satin Brass_05

Possibly our favourite from the collection, the Pittella 070 door handle is a unique design featuring classic 1950’s curvature – we love it for its point of difference.

A more geometric shape, the Pittella 079 is the most classic and versatile piece in the range. We think it would work in just about any style of home.

Pittella is a family business with more than 40 years’ experience in producing and importing high-end architectural door fittings and bathroom accessories aided by their in-house design team and the creativity of prominent Italian architects including Achille Castiglioni, Antonio Citterio, David Chipperfield.

Interiors and exteriors glimmer at Brasshouse development

The rippling effect of Brasshouse’s new exteriors, integrated beautifully with its interior finishes, brings a grand industrial sheen to blue-chip Hawthorn East.

image

Sun-stroked metal ribbons designed by award-winning architecture and interiors firm Rothelowman form the outer shell of the new $12 million development. “There’s something timeless about brass, which is ideal for these homes because we’re designing contemporary living spaces in a very well established location,” said interior design associate Alicia Lynch.

image

The aesthetic of the brass ribbons that wrap around the entire building is continued throughout each apartment, with the kitchen splashbacks featuring fine brass trim and geometric bathrooms finished with warm brass tapware.

A unique feature of the development is the inclusion of furniture (desk, bench and television table) created by Rothelowman, which showcase the same brass trim and ceramic stone top to match the rest of the building design.

image

“Throughout the entire building there is a sense of seamless connection and a lustre which will create an address of distinction,” said Rothelowman senior designer Joshua Amsellem.

The project, at 771 Toorak Road Hawthorn East, is being sold through CBRE real estate agents and is a product of K7 Developments.

Zakkia’s SS15 range blends Scandinavian and Aussie design

Zakkia is one homewares brand that is continuously stepping up their game. Starting off in 2012 selling decorative knobs, their Spring Summer 15 collection is leaps and bounds away from their humble beginnings.

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.52.26 am

With a range that includes hand blown glass vessels, water hyacinth baskets and versatile ceramic and brass objects, Zakkia have also expanded their iconic concrete collection to include 100% soy wax scented candles. “We worked with a local candle maker in the Southern Highlands and a local fragrance house to create these candles,” explains founder and Swede-turned-Sydneysider, Sara Lundgren. “After almost six years in Australia I was craving the scents of Sweden, so each custom scent blend resembles the four Swedish seasons – sommar (summer), host (autumn), vinter (winter) and vår (spring). I love the end result and the scents really do remind me of home!”

Zakkia 2015

All designed in Sydney and hand produced by small artisan communities around the world, Zakkia’s style is a fusion of their Scandinavian roots and their new home in Bondi. “This season we are still building on our Swedish heritage but we have also brought in a bit more of the coastal Bondi lifestyle, with the aqua coloured glass pieces and braided water hyacinth baskets. The new collection is still very much in keeping with our minimalist design ethos, which comes through in the simple designs and clean lines.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.54.56 am

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.51.48 am

With each piece carefully handmade from high quality materials, Zakkia have continued to work with the raw natural materials they love, such as concrete and brass. It is for that reason Sara is very excited about one of their other latest additions, their Ghost Vases. “Made from a concrete base with a wire frame, these vases are quite a unique shape. Each piece is created to have multiple uses, and they have been very well received by our stockists.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.57.27 am

Zakkia’s Spring Summer 15 collection is now available for pre-order, to be received in early November. Prices start at $19.

Silver, copper and brass tableware made by age-old techniques

Believing tableware should not just be functional, but beautiful and long-lasting, silversmith Alison Jackson launched her first solo exhibition, Table Tools, featuring 48 high-end, handcrafted pieces.

AJACKSON_Scoops_Group

Created using age-old techniques and fine silver, copper and brass, the consolidated body of work includes one-off, individually made pieces. Vessels of many shapes and sizes, spoons each with their own personality, quirky whisks and flexible serving utensils, all marry form and function to produce table tools designed to last.

AJACKSON_Whisk_Group_03

Starting each vessel with a flat sheet of metal and sinking it into the hollow of a tree stump to give it some shape; each sheet was then annealed-heated to a critical temperature that returns the metal to its soft state. Next, came the raising process: “Raising is time-consuming and labour intensive, but also an incredibly rewarding process,” says 29-year-old Alison. “It’s amazing what you can achieve with a sheet of metal and a hammer.”

AJACKSON_10V10D_Group_02

While each piece has a name, Alison doesn’t dictate how they should be used. “They’re designed to be flexible and I want people to use their imagination and not restrict themselves to one use. These are tactile pieces you’ll want to use, not just store away for a special occasion. They make everyday experiences special, like eating a bowl of cereal.”

AJACKSON_Utensils_Group_02

The exhibition also features a project very close to Alison’s heart, ‘10 vessels 10 days’. “To challenge myself, I created one vessel each day for 10 days and all during work hours. Not every vessel is 100% perfect, but they all hold special meaning and value.”

Table Tools is on until 24 October at Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre, Canberra. For more information.

Traditional skills inspire Beeline’s cool copper furniture

A lifelong love of timber has finally become a homewares business for furniture maker Adam Brislin and his partner Lucy Grant. And it’s off to a great start.

CAT-COVER3

Established in 2010 as a bespoke business it wasn’t until they created the Calypso Stool that Beeline Design changed direction, and the introduction of copper and brass versions last year left them little time to work on much else! They’ve now completed their first full range; a selection of simple yet stylish pieces which continue their relaxed modern aesthetic. Each piece celebrates the beauty of timber accented with a facet or edging in non-ferrous metals or colour.

stool-stack2

Each piece is produced in their Preston VIC workshop using only sustainably sourced timbers and the finest materials and finishes.

Adam’s career as a furniture maker has seen him working for some of Melbourne’s most reputable companies honing his trade, while Lucy’s background in fashion design has helped them to create their own unique style. Their influences range from the Danish designers of the mid-century to the Bauhaus school and Art Deco periods.

05

The pair also take a lot of inspiration from the co-operative they work out of in Preston. Worco was established in 1979 and is Victoria’s second oldest co-operative still in operation today. It houses a number of heritage trades including a blacksmith, ceramicist, luthier — that’s someone who makes or repairs string instruments (except harps), before you ask —  and a collection of fellow passionate woodworkers. They credit the collaborative and supportive nature of the workshop as integral to the growth and development of Beeline.

cubes

Selling their wares in design hubs Proforma in Melbourne and Koskela in Sydney has no doubt contributed to their success, showcasing their pieces next to some of the top names in Australian design talent.

Having recently launched their range at Decor+Design, they are now flat out filling orders but are already thinking up their new collection.

Sculptural and beautiful, the upcoming solo collection by Louise Olsen, creative director of Dinosaur Designs, sees floral forms reinterpreted and designed as stunning objects for the home and wearable pieces for the body.

Entitled Flower, the homewares collection brings large petal forms together to create a field of flowers, in pieces ranging from servers to flower-like plates. The vases resemble blossoming flowers, long and delicate in shape.

Bold opaques mix with the glowing transparent colours of pastel peach and green, and the warm purple swirl applied to the flower plates evokes the incredible spot-like markings of an orchid.

Mr Pinchy and Co are back with more fabulous gold accessories

After a bit of a break to reassess and finesse their business model, I’m delighted that Mr Pinchy and Co and their gorgeous brass objets are back!

Mr Pinchy family (Angle) LR
Mr Pinchy the crab, from $49

Husband and wife team Michael and Lou Beer have changed craftsmen and improved quality and are back with “a broader yet more refined offering” and a new website.

The brand, stocked exclusive by Coco Republic and Becker Minty and also available online, prides itself on its masculinity and old world collector charm. “We feel there is a real void in the market for it,” adds Michael. “Our pieces are made to last, making them great life objects to be revered in the family and handed along over time. It’s often not the price tag that makes an inanimate object loved, but it’s the character, rawness and presence it brings to a space.”

Larry
Larry the lobster, from $99

With Christmas approaching, the men in our lives can certainly be some of the hardest to buy for, but the Pinchy crab claw bottle opener would surely go down well? As a female though, I have to say I’d be delighted to be gifted any of these pieces. I can’t get enough of gold accessories right now!

Crab claw bottle opener
Crab claw bottle opener, $89

Other items, including the fabulous new Larry the lobster, are available in polished or brushed gold (moving forward, they will begin to offer antique bronze, antique green and black across some pieces).

Working with his wife is proving successful for Michael: “Lou is my level head. I always want to do the large statement pieces such as crocodile skulls (coming soon), but she reminds me that the price pointed pieces are what people are more likely to buy as gifts or if they are new to our brand and have not seen our pieces or their quality previously.”
