Boost to industry as Decor + Design in-person event returns to Melbourne

This July, Australia’s number one interiors trade event is making a triumphant return to Melbourne. After the challenges of the past year, the 18th edition of Decor + Design and the Australian International Furniture Fair will give the design industry an important boost and the opportunity to do business in person.

From Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 July, Melbourne Exhibition Centre will transform into an interior design village of beautifully curated style inspiration. Decor + Design and the Australian International Furniture Fair will exhibit the latest in indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, textiles, workspace design and contemporary art.

Featured speakers at this year’s International Seminar Series will include interior designer, presenter and style writer, James Treble, top designers Mim Fanning, Cameron Kimber, Jeremy Bull, Adelaide Bragg and Thomas Hamel, plus design authorities Robyn Holt and Interiors Addict’s very own Jen Bishop.

“We’re are super excited to bring Australia’s premier networking and buying event for the design industry back to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre in 2021,” says event director Chris May.

“This industry is all about the senses and experiencing products in real life – something we’ve all sorely missed over the past year! Many long term and exciting new exhibitors will be showcasing classic and contemporary styles and launching new products at the 2021 show.”

It’s an important annual destination for retailers, interior designers, decorators and architects. The events will feature a spectacular line-up of exhibitors, including Satara, Bisque Interiors, Cromwell, Darcy & Duke, James Stewart Furniture, LaGrolla, Cooper Black, Wisteria Design, LaForma Australia, Warwick Fabricks, Calibre Furniture, Vetro Furniture, L&M Home and Tantra.

With international travel still effectively embargoed, international perspectives will be provided via exclusive virtual seminars. Victoria Redshaw, popular futurist of leading UK trend forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, will bring an international perspective with her major design trends forecast.

Another event highlight will be James Treble’s daily practical design trend tours, where he will translate this year’s trends to the products available on the show floor.

Bobby Berk chats to us about Australia, Queer Eye & his design business

From his perceptions of Australian style to how we can feel happier at home, I thoroughly enjoyed my Zoom interview with American interiors icon and my favourite Queer Eye host, Bobby Berk.

Photo by Luke Fontana, courtesy of Bobby Berk

Bobby Berk’s a global name thanks not only to being the face of his own successful design business and furniture range, but one of the popular hosts of Netflix show Queer Eye. His first and only visit to Australia however, was to film an episode of the makeover show in the NSW farming town of Yass, sparking many riffs on their catchphrase “Yass queen!” That was clever!

Queer Eye season 5

While he may not have see the best of Australian interior design on that trip to Yass (which later experienced a tourism boom!) in 2018, Bobby says he loves our style, and thinks it’s come a long way.

“It used to be that people I met from Australia said please bring your stuff over here because we don’t have anything good design wise! But in the last five-to-10 years, I’ve noticed some of the best design coming out of Australia.”

Bobby mentions “beautiful” brands like Jardan as standouts, and says he’s been insta-buddies with stylist Jason Grant for years. “I absolutely think Australia’s at the forefront of design with some beautiful neutral and natural palates, it’s quite like the relaxed California vibe to me.”

His own furniture line has been stocked here at Max Sparrow since the start of the year and has been well received. “They do a great job with the design of their stores and I love the way they present my pieces. That’s really important to me.”

He hopes to come back when he can, revealing Australian followers are the third largest in number on his social media.

Of course, I had to ask Bobby for some tips for our everyday homes, especially with us all spending so much more time in them since Covid. For many, this has meant being frustrated with our spaces not working as well or looking as good as they could! “I think the best thing you can do first is get on top of your organisation,” the self-confessed minimalist says. “Often people think they need to add to make their homes better, but in reality they need to get a lot of stuff out of there! So start organising and donating what you don’t need. Start small with something like your junk drawer and it will be less overwhelming.”

Bobby says bathrooms are commonly frustrating rooms for people with overflowing medicine cabinets and a mess of unused products. “We start and end the day in these rooms and if they’re a mess, that’s reminding us day in, day out, that we haven’t achieved what we want to, and makes us feel like failures.”

Other top tips for making your home happier include splurging on quality bedding (even when he was “dirt poor” Bobby says he saved up to buy quality linen). “It’s so important. It’s so nice to crawl into a bed that feels like a luxury hotel bed at the end of the night. It’s so mood-boosting.”

Another tip is to move around things you already own, like art, to other rooms in your home, to create a fresh feel.

Bobby, who usually has a hectic travel schedule for Queer Eye, admits that he hasn’t found spending so much time at home lately a chore. “I’m pretty low key. I’m certainly not someone going to Hollywood events, and bars and nightclubs aren’t fun anymore.” While Bobby loves his fans, being so well known means it’s hard to spend time with his friends in public places and actually get to talk to them, because he gets approached so much. Added to that the pressure of not wanting to seem unfriendly or ungrateful, it can be a tough balancing act.

That precious time off has become increasingly hard to come by as the popularity of Queer Eye has exploded across the globe. And Bobby admits being the name and face of his brand can be overwhelming at times. “I felt that way even before Queer Eye,” he says. “I always said when the store became successful that I wish I’d come up with a different name,” he jokes. “But when your brand is your name, if it fails, there’s no coming back from it.”

Equally, when the show started, he still tried to keep across every aspect of his business before quickly realising that just wasn’t possible anymore. “I had to know every little thing. I micro-managed and had no life at all. But now I have a great team and I’ve learned to let go.”

Queer Eye season 5

One thing that never gets tired is his part in making over the homes of the people featured on Queer Eye, revealing he gets the same budget, no matter the space, so can often have more fun in small spaces. “These can often be more satisfying because you have to get creative, plus a little bit of design can make a big impact.”

The show’s makeovers are living proof that our surroundings at home go further than just aesthetics and can really affect how we feel. “If you’re surrounded by chaos, it’s chaos in your mind, ” he says. “It’s so important for our mental health to keep our homes together and nice, and being surrounded by things we love can really make us feel happy.”

Queer Eye season 5

Bobby says his own home in LA (before moving there in 2018, he lived in New York for many years) is minimalist and neutral. “There’s not much colour. It’s a lot of ivories, black and browns from timber.” While his husband, surgeon Dewey Do, used to give him carte blanche with decorating their home, Bobby says as he’s exposed him more to design, he has started having more opinions! “He didn’t used to care,” he says. “Now I’ve learned to give him three options I like, so he always has a choice!”

Bobby is excited to be giving a keynote speech at this year’s virtual Decor + Design Show (Decor + Design 360 from 28 September) but only wishes he was coming here for real!

Last but not least I had to ask Bobby: is it normal to (like me) cry at every episode of Queer Eye? “Even I sometimes cry when I watch them,” he says. “We aren’t with each other all the time throughout the show, so there are many moments we don’t see. We still watch the show like everybody else and it’s very much a surprise.”

Bobby Berk, Abigail Ahern & Martyn Lawrence Bullard at Decor + Design 2020

It’s been heartening to see many of the industry’s favourite events embrace technology and go virtual for 2020 as we all struggle with the uncertainty of where Covid-19 will end. I was so excited to hear yesterday that some of my absolute favourite international interiors celebs will be involved in Decor + Design’s seminar series.

Bobby Berk, superstar interior designer, best known as one of the fab five on makeover show Queer Eye, is one of them. I am a massive fan. Huge. Speaking of fan girling, UK designer Abigail Ahern is also in the lineup and you all know how much I adore her rule-breaking decorating style. And the amazing Martyn Lawrence Bullard probably needs no introduction to interiors addicts!

American interior designer and Queer Eye star Bobby Berk

I’m also delighted to announce that Interiors Addict is a media partner of the event again, in what is now a long-running partnership. Usually attended by 11,000+ visitors at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, this year the show will become a virtual interiors trade marketplace, Decor + Design 360, before returning as a hybrid event in 2021.

Held in conjunction with the Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF), the virtual show be packed full of design influencers, a Trends Networking Lounge and inspirational design products from both exhibitors and the VIVID Design Awards.

I particularly love how D+D attracts amazing speakers from around the globe for the International Seminar Series because it’s great to tap into what’s going on elsewhere in the world, especially when Australia is so physically far away from places like Europe, where many trends start. And with none of us able to travel internationally to soak up those global influences, it’s more important than ever.

You can book tickets (from $50 to $85 each) for the seminars already, which also feature great Australian talent like Greg Natale and James Treble. Another long-running show favourite is trends forecaster Victoria Redshaw from the UK. And I’m looking forward to hearing from Hong Kong hotel designer Andre Fu.

The virtual show will run from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October. Registration is free and still open to members of the trade only, despite being online. Book before midnight on 12 August to save 15% on seminar tickets.

2019 VIVID Design Awards finalists & ticket giveaway!

Australia’s longest running and highly regarded design competition VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design) is back again this year with a fresh crop of talented finalists. The program, currently in its 16th year, has helped kickstart many successful design careers and is an important part of the local and international design industry.

This year’s 53 successful finalists (the largest field ever) entered across four key categories including Furniture, Lighting, Concept and Object in the competition that runs alongside the Decor + Design show. Today we’re bringing you some of our favourites.

'Object' finalist Manuel Canestrini's 'Colonnade' is a metal stackable indoor planter box that is inspired by ancient roman aqueducts.

Inspired by Australia’s beautiful coastlines, Simon Haeser’s ‘Oceania’ is a stand-out piece from the Furniture category. The modern two-seat sofa boasts clean lines and curves and while sophisticated embraces comfort too.

Another notable Furniture finalist is a submission from a trio of designers (Rachel McGuigan, Kerri Hollingsworth and Zetta Kanta) who collaborated to create ‘form. fibre. furniture’ which is a collection of three textured, multi-purpose storage ottoman/coffee tables with reversible lids.

The Lighting finalists are also a bunch of gems but Pauline Tsolos’ ‘Brass Wall Sconce’ is notable for its beautiful, oyster-like appearance. Akin to jewellery, the piece of functional sculpture is hand-crafted in Melbourne.

The Concept category is always interesting, and this year is no different. We particularly like ‘Freka. The Chair’ by Ivana Dancova who based the piece upon the multiple ways that a human body twists and contorts in its physical environment, by inspiring physical interaction with what is essentially a statement-making bulbous latex inflatable. Fun! It reminds us of the iconic B&B Italia Gaetano Pesce Series.

The Object category produced many fabulous finalists including Marta Figueiredo’s colourful ‘TOTEMS.’ Made from wool, acrylic paint and pine, the tactile items are comprised of one ottoman and two sound absorbent sculptures that plays with human scale – the pieces are 2.5 metres, 2.1 metres and 0.5 metres respectively.

This year’s judges, and leading industry figures, include George Danos (JR Furniture), Hayley Beaden (Tait), Dan Treacy (Rakumba), Fil Bjazvic (Latitude), Jan Henderson (Inside Magazine) and Natalie Mortimer (Australian Design Review). The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on Thursday July 18.

To celebrate the VIVID exhibition, you can check out all of the finalists in the flesh courtesy of our latest competition. What’s launching at Decor + Design Melbourne next week?

I can’t wait to get to Melbourne next week and check out Decor + Design. Interiors Addict is thrilled to be official media partner for another year. There are some great names speaking at the always-popular International Seminar Series including celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw, as well as Aussies Megan Morton, Jason Grant , Greg Natale and James Treble.

Plenty of brands will be holding off on their new releases until the show, but we got a sneak peek at what’s coming from one of our favourites, GlobeWest, who always have an amazing (and huge!) stand. It’s been a big year for the brand with a new website, the launch of its Find a Designer service and an expanded Brisbane showroom to name but a few milestones.

So what can we expect from their Collections 2019, being launched at the show? Marketing manager Kirsten Thompson says: “This is the debut of our new range and the launch of our major annual catalogue so it’s the pinnacle for us! In ascertaining the themes for Collections 2019, we applied ongoing research into colour, form, texture and materials and then combined this with our brand aesthetic and insights on how Australians live.

“I don’t want to be spoiler but can tell you that at D+D this year, visitors can expect to see around six interior themes communicated within our stand across core aesthetics: Contemporary, Modern, Classic,  Retreat and Global Eclectic. We also have a new dedicated outdoor living section where we’ll present a comprehensive offering of stylish and supremely durable furniture.”

GlobeWest, launched in 2004, is still run by brothers Stephen & Alan Mendel. The brand will be at Stands B11 and B12.

This year’s theme is ‘Global-Local-Inspiration’ and not only will the series celebrate Australian design but it will also look at global influence and trends emerging in the scene as a whole. A trio of interesting characters will headline the series – New York based industrial designer Karim Rashid, international lighting designer David Trubridge (NZ) and leading trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw (UK).

Industrial designer Karim Rashid

With over 3000 designs in production, and over 300 international awards under his belt, Karim Rashid is considered an authority on design. He’s also an experienced interior designer across hospitality and residential spaces and the seminar will see him give his thoughts on the future of design.

David Trubridge
Furniture & lighting designer David Trubridge

Known for his iconic lighting designs (the Coral pendant possibly his most famous), New Zealander David Trubridge has previously been listed as one of the world’s top 15 designers and recently fulfilled commissions for the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh. An advocate of eco-conscious design, David will discuss his locally inspired designs which are enjoyed across the globe.

As you know, we love a good trend here at Interiors Addict and we can’t wait to hear Victoria Redshaw’s insights into the key colour and design trends for 2017. A leading trend forecaster at Scarlet Opus (an interiors and home-dedicated trend forecasting consultancy), Redshaw is quite the authority on the issue.

Discover the next big thing at the VIVID design comp in July

A rare opportunity to check out the cream of the crop of Australia’s design talent, the VIVID (Vibrant Vision in Design) competition will run again this year as part of Melbourne’s Décor + Design show from July 21-24 this year.

Jeremy Lee’s ‘Lo Chair’

Australia’s longest running design competition, it’s a fabulous platform for emerging designers to garner the attention of buyers, development and production managers, interior designers and manufacturers and competition finalists are also granted a first-hand look into the inner machinations of the design industry – a fabulous learning opportunity all-round.

“VIVID 2016 aims to convey to the design industry the talent of emerging Australian designers. We aim to shine a spotlight on designers who are raising the bar in terms of innovation and design thinking,” says Daniel Della Riva, VIVID Curator. This year’s crop runs the full gamut from ultra-modern to more classic design aesthetics though a strong theme has emerged this year across the board of finalists – the use of natural timbers.

Glen Braghurst’s ‘Outdoor Chair’

A favourite finalist of ours, Glen Braghurst’s ‘Outdoor Chair’ will have you looking super chic at your next festival – made from Swedish leather that has been wrapped around a powder-coated steel frame this chair really is an object of understated beauty.

We’re also loving Richard Greenacre’s ‘Hex Table Lamp’ – the gorgeous powdery blue shade especially. This interesting design was dreamt up after the designer was inspired by a piece of hexagonal brass.

Pushing the natural theme to its limit, Gary Pennington’s ‘Groove Floor Lamp’ is made from bamboo and hand-printed hemp cloth while Jeremy Lee’s handmade ‘Lo Chair’ is a sleek low chair that features simple clean lines made from beautiful wood too.

British designer Allegra Hicks to headline Decor + Design

Globally renowned designers and stylists will gather in Melbourne for Decor + Design’s International Seminar Series this July. A highlight of the 16-19 July program, the series will be headlined by British interior designer Allegra Hicks and leading trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw.

Allegra
Allegra

Here at Interiors Addict we are particularly excited by the addition of Allegra to the star-studded lineup; with the highly acclaimed designer set to speak about the importance of colour and texture in the home. “I love the combination of different textures in a house,” explains Allegra. “Texture creates depth and colour creates mood. For instance, a turquoise velvet, a turquoise silk and turquoise cotton all do different things and create different spaces. A cotton might be used for a beach house, whereas the velvet gives mid-century elegance and the silk is very romantic.”

With Allegra’s work spanning fabrics and rugs to homewares and fashion, she is excited about the prospect of introducing her work to the Australian market. “I’ve always been fascinated by Australia and have never been. My work has mostly been exposed to Europe and the US, and Design + Decor is an amazing opportunity to be introduced to a new market. My fabrics are distributed through Tigger Hall Design in Australia who have two beautiful showrooms in Sydney and Melbourne and I am very much looking forward to visiting them!”

_MG_8287

Known for her trademark style of bohemian fusion, Allegra incorporates unlikely patterns and colours to form a harmonious whole. “The best way of describing bohemian fusion is eclecticism. It’s a collection of things you have gathered; the old, the new, inherited pieces, designer pieces, vintage finds, etc. Style is about beautiful design, not about the price!”

Uniqwa Furniture is back and stronger than ever after floods

Having spent close to four years recovering from the 2011 Brisbane Floods, Uniqwa Furniture is back and stronger than ever!

uniqwa interiors addict 2

Offering unique designer furniture with a strong focus on raw and natural materials, it was the years held back from expressing his passion that made Uniqwa Furniture creator, Charl van Heerden, determined to keep the brand alive.

With a strong but not predominant African flavour, Uniqwa Furniture is, as the name describes, uniqueness with a difference. All about simplicity and function, the pieces are organic, earthy and naturally modern. Born in South Africa, much of Charl’s inspiration originates from Africa, the stunning natural luxurious resorts and the tribal influences. “I am, and always have been, inspired by the culture that I grew up in. It is such a creative place where people use materials often overlooked to create the most amazing pieces of art. I have learned that there is the potential for beauty in everything around us, but it is the way we use it, the way we see it and the way we apply it that makes it beautiful.”

Uniqwa Furniture will be exhibiting at Decor & Design in Melbourne next year, a feat they have been attempting since being sidelined by the floods in 2011. But for wholesalers who cannot wait until then, you can check out their products online!

Decor + Design Sydney cancelled

Harvey Stockbridge, managing director of Informa Exhibitions Australia, yesterday announced the cancellation of Decor + Design Sydney, scheduled to be held at the Royal Hall of Industries in February.

“After consulting with key industry stakeholders and partners who all support Decor + Design, it has been decided to consolidate both the Sydney and Melbourne events into a national annual showcase, to be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from 16-19 July 2015. This provides the Australian market with a unique, must-see trade show specifically designed for the furnishing and interiors market.”

The decision to consolidate Decor + Design into an annual showcase based in Melbourne is strategic in its approach to further reinforce Decor + Design’s position as the leading Australian event. Harvey says the event is excited to deliver a more comprehensive face-to-face platform, providing exhibitors with the ultimate opportunity to further enhance their experience, drive business objectives and grow market reach.

Decor + Design will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, from 16-to-19 July 2015 alongside Furnitex and Flooring & Finishes with ATFA.
