Bobby Berk, Abigail Ahern & Martyn Lawrence Bullard at Decor + Design 2020

It’s been heartening to see many of the industry’s favourite events embrace technology and go virtual for 2020 as we all struggle with the uncertainty of where Covid-19 will end. I was so excited to hear yesterday that some of my absolute favourite international interiors celebs will be involved in Decor + Design’s seminar series.

Bobby Berk, superstar interior designer, best known as one of the fab five on makeover show Queer Eye, is one of them. I am a massive fan. Huge. Speaking of fan girling, UK designer Abigail Ahern is also in the lineup and you all know how much I adore her rule-breaking decorating style. And the amazing Martyn Lawrence Bullard probably needs no introduction to interiors addicts!

I’m also delighted to announce that Interiors Addict is a media partner of the event again, in what is now a long-running partnership. Usually attended by 11,000+ visitors at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, this year the show will become a virtual interiors trade marketplace, Decor + Design 360, before returning as a hybrid event in 2021.

Held in conjunction with the Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF), the virtual show be packed full of design influencers, a Trends Networking Lounge and inspirational design products from both exhibitors and the VIVID Design Awards.

I particularly love how D+D attracts amazing speakers from around the globe for the International Seminar Series because it’s great to tap into what’s going on elsewhere in the world, especially when Australia is so physically far away from places like Europe, where many trends start. And with none of us able to travel internationally to soak up those global influences, it’s more important than ever.

You can book tickets (from $50 to $85 each) for the seminars already, which also feature great Australian talent like Greg Natale and James Treble. Another long-running show favourite is trends forecaster Victoria Redshaw from the UK. And I’m looking forward to hearing from Hong Kong hotel designer Andre Fu.

The virtual show will run from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October. Registration is free and still open to members of the trade only, despite being online. Book before midnight on 12 August to save 15% on seminar tickets.

What’s launching at Decor + Design Melbourne next week?

I can’t wait to get to Melbourne next week and check out Decor + Design. Interiors Addict is thrilled to be official media partner for another year. There are some great names speaking at the always-popular International Seminar Series including celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw, as well as Aussies Megan Morton, Jason Grant , Greg Natale and James Treble.

Plenty of brands will be holding off on their new releases until the show, but we got a sneak peek at what’s coming from one of our favourites, GlobeWest, who always have an amazing (and huge!) stand. It’s been a big year for the brand with a new website, the launch of its Find a Designer service and an expanded Brisbane showroom to name but a few milestones.

So what can we expect from their Collections 2019, being launched at the show? Marketing manager Kirsten Thompson says: “This is the debut of our new range and the launch of our major annual catalogue so it’s the pinnacle for us! In ascertaining the themes for Collections 2019, we applied ongoing research into colour, form, texture and materials and then combined this with our brand aesthetic and insights on how Australians live.

“I don’t want to be spoiler but can tell you that at D+D this year, visitors can expect to see around six interior themes communicated within our stand across core aesthetics: Contemporary, Modern, Classic,  Retreat and Global Eclectic. We also have a new dedicated outdoor living section where we’ll present a comprehensive offering of stylish and supremely durable furniture.”

GlobeWest, launched in 2004, is still run by brothers Stephen & Alan Mendel. The brand will be at Stands B11 and B12.

British designer Allegra Hicks to headline Decor + Design

Globally renowned designers and stylists will gather in Melbourne for Decor + Design’s International Seminar Series this July. A highlight of the 16-19 July program, the series will be headlined by British interior designer Allegra Hicks and leading trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw.

Here at Interiors Addict we are particularly excited by the addition of Allegra to the star-studded lineup; with the highly acclaimed designer set to speak about the importance of colour and texture in the home. “I love the combination of different textures in a house,” explains Allegra. “Texture creates depth and colour creates mood. For instance, a turquoise velvet, a turquoise silk and turquoise cotton all do different things and create different spaces. A cotton might be used for a beach house, whereas the velvet gives mid-century elegance and the silk is very romantic.”

With Allegra’s work spanning fabrics and rugs to homewares and fashion, she is excited about the prospect of introducing her work to the Australian market. “I’ve always been fascinated by Australia and have never been. My work has mostly been exposed to Europe and the US, and Design + Decor is an amazing opportunity to be introduced to a new market. My fabrics are distributed through Tigger Hall Design in Australia who have two beautiful showrooms in Sydney and Melbourne and I am very much looking forward to visiting them!”

Known for her trademark style of bohemian fusion, Allegra incorporates unlikely patterns and colours to form a harmonious whole. “The best way of describing bohemian fusion is eclecticism. It’s a collection of things you have gathered; the old, the new, inherited pieces, designer pieces, vintage finds, etc. Style is about beautiful design, not about the price!”
