At home with artist Jasmine Mansbridge

Jasmine Mansbridge’s home is exactly how I’d imagine an artist’s home to be: colourful, eclectic and a little bit whimsical. And of course, there’s plenty going on on the walls.

Jasmine Mansbridge main bedroom

Jasmine and her family have lived in this 1930s weatherboard in Hamilton, a three-hour drive from Melbourne, for four months. “We rented for almost two years and were wondering if we would ever find a home which suited us when we found this baby,” she says. “It was lovingly extended from the original two bedrooms by the previous owners and they used reclaimed floorboards, dado rail, doors and other pieces to keep the house true to its original form. This sympathetic renovation is one of the things we love about it. It now has five separate rooms (one being my studio) and the layout works perfectly for our family.” With 4 children, it’s a busy home!

“I have spent so much of my life moving around, so much so that everything that has stayed with me on the journey so far has had to have had a certain significance,” says Jasmine. “All the items around my home have stories and this is important to me. I am sentimental about the past and the importance of things to evoke the memories of places important to me, but gone in the physical sense. I do think if you are an artist there is a presumption that you will have good taste, but taste and creativity surely are two very different things.”

Buy Dan and Dani’s art from The Block

Dan and Dani may have been criticised by The Block judges for using work by the same artist they used in the last series, but you can see why they would. Andrew O’Brien’s work is gorgeous!

The good news is you can buy one of his prints online from just $130, which is a massive bargain if you ask me.

4 tips for changing your decor with the seasons

Sherrie Coleman helps people with choosing special pieces of art for their homes on a daily basis. She has noticed more and more Aussies running with the European trend for changing your decor with the seasons.

Photo art like this would suit a summer interior

“Four seasons? I’m not sure about that. These days there are probably about eight – and none of them run in order anymore!” she says.

“In the cooler months, we tend to live a little slower, cook hearty meals and spend more time at home. People are inspired to bring their focus indoors, bringing warm colours into the home, rich in golds, pinks and deep oranges. In the warmer months, people put more energy into life. We want our key environment, our home, to reflect the way we choose to live – which changes with the seasons. Warm, comforting colours for the winter and cool, energetic, bright images for summer.”

Sherrie, who runs Saltmotion Gallery in Sydney’s Manly, advises keeping it easy. “Adapting your home should be simple by just focusing on the key rooms: the living area, bedroom and even the kitchen if you’re the overachiever type. With just a few changes, you can make a huge difference to your home environment and how it makes you feel.”

Her four tips for a seasonal home

1. Install a dimmer switch on your lights (can be as little as $20 and installed yourself) and use in conjunction with candles in winter.

Pom pays tribute to second home Sydney with latest poster art series

Al Walsh’s first series of poster art, The Travels of Vivienne, recalled an era of advertising now long gone. The exhibition was heralded a success with press in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and of course, Interiors Addict.

Fast forward to 2013 and we have Sydney, Al’s second poster art series. It elegantly captures iconic suburbs, paying tribute to the city that this Pom has called home for nearly a decade. “24 January is the 9-year anniversary of my relocation from London to Sydney. I wanted to create a collection that local people could relate to, as well as paying homage to the place as a way to say ‘thank you for having me’.”

And he nailed it. “I want people to look on their wall and see the elegance, the glamour and the seduction of Sydney,” says Al, “a little reminder of what a wonderful part of the world it really is.”

You can check out the exhibition from Thursday (24 January) at The Foxhole Small Bar, corner of Kent and Erskine Streets, Sydney. Luckily for us, Al’s works are ‘cheap and cheerful’ and at only $100 unframed or $250 framed, it’s artwork for the budget-conscious.

Homewares Interviews

Everything begins with beautiful homewares from around the globe

Online store Everything Begins has been around for almost a year but intentionally keeping a pretty low profile. The “highly curated” site brings together beautiful things from independent creative types from across the globe.

Founder Amy Timbrell says: “I’ve always had a massive love of discovering and sharing gorgeous things and over time I seemed to have developed a bit of a knack for hunting things down. I’m bordering a bit obsessive in a way I guess.” She’s taking it very personally too, claiming everything on the site is something she would have herself, in her home or to wear. “That’s the measure test I guess. Would I have it in my home? Would I wear it?”

ABC tea cup and saucer, $39

With less products, carefully chosen, Amy wants Everything Begins to be a destination: a place where people can go and know that without a doubt they will find something super special, for themselves or as a gift. “Some designers that have approached us have really great designs, but if they are not quite EB then we turn them down,” she adds. “It is all about quality of products over quantity, and most importantly, consistency in style.”

Typography + rugs = winning!

You know how I love a little (okay, a lot of) typography in my life. So these rugs by Linus Dean immediately appealed to me.

After spending 15 years in the graphic design and advertising industries in Sydney, New Zealander Linus Dean has gone out on his own to design typographical rugs. While they look super modern, the high quality silk and wool rugs are made by hand using traditional techniques, in Nepal. Linus recently spent five there, getting to know how the local weaving industry works.

Top 10 interior styling essentials

While I’m no stylist, I’ve spent enough time around the country’s best, read enough books and magazines and rearranged my own furniture and accessories enough times to know a thing or two about the little things which can make a big difference to your home. Everyone needs a couch, a coffee table, a TV, some kind of storage unit and perhaps an armchair in their living room. It’s the little things you add to the mix that really create your look and say something about you. Without these little touches, rooms lack personality and a sense of the people who live in them.

(Above: Inexpensive art from Urban Road)

Here are my top 10 styling essentials. I’d love to hear what yours are.
