The Baobab Collective: authentic and soulful African textiles

The Baobab Collective brings soulful African style to Australia with a curated collection of throws and blankets. Made in South Africa, the new range is sustainably sourced and ethically crafted.

“Having grown up in South Africa, we always had beautiful throws at home – we wanted to introduce Australians to these incredible textiles that are filled with stories and cultural importance,” said Greg van Zyl, founder of The Baobab Collective.

“Now based in Australia’s Southern Highlands – we know what it’s like to need cosy layers. The Baobab Collective introduces the best pieces for adding texture and warmth to a home, and are made by the oldest and most revered blanket manufacturer in South Africa.”

One of their range, the Basotho blankets, are a distinctive woollen blanket worn by the Sotho people of Africa, and are steeped in history. Originally gifted in the late 19th century to the then ruler King Moshoeshoe by an English man known only as “Mr Howell”, these blankets quickly gained popularity, replacing the traditional animal skin cloaks.

Throws start from $169.

Koala launches sustainable homewares with an Australian first

Koala are continuing to expand their offering beyond mattresses by branching into homewares. The collection of over 30 pieces spans cushions, throws, and the first wool rug range in Australia to use certified Responsible Wool.

Founder and CEO Mitch Taylor says the expansion is one of their most exciting yet. “Homewares as a category is traditionally the pinnacle of “fast furniture” so the challenge of revolutionising the industry excited us. Koala first disrupted the mattress industry by cutting out the middleman, and then the furniture industry by creating furniture built to last, and now we’ve done it again with homewares.”

Koala’s in-house designers work on every single piece from scratch, before turning the pieces over to master craftsmen and women in India. “With homewares, we want to celebrate Koala’s uniqueness whilst doing something meaningful and timeless for the brand. We’ve created a real sense of something special you can’t get anywhere else, with all colours and material finishes inspired by the Australian landscape, from outback red dirt to beautiful coral reefs,” said design director Alexandra Owen.

Koala’s new collection was created with sustainability in mind. The wool rugs are made with Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) wool, sustainably sourced from New Zealand. Additionally, rugs such as the Bottlebrush Rug are made with 100% PET recycled plastic bottles, reducing waste in landfills or the ocean.

Jen’s loving the Beach Bum Throw, inspired by native flora and fauna and made from certified organic cotton

There’s not a stitch nor seam that hasn’t passed Koala’s rigorous sustainable standards. This includes using blended or 100% OCS Organic Cotton, responsibly sourced wool and fabrics made of recycled plastic bottles. Plus the brand worked with suppliers who prioritise fair work practices.

Kmart Australia dropped their May living range recently and it’s overflowing with plenty of snug, on-trend items set to transform your home for winter. “We all love to spend more time indoors in winter, whether it be rugged up in bed with a book or with a warm tea, and surrounded by plush bedding. The time is right to cosy up with layers of luxurious blankets, throws and cushions!” says Julie Miller-Sensini, Kmart’s general manager of Living.

“We have continued with the Scandinavian trend, including soft grey and pastel tones enhanced with new colours such as emerald green and midnight blue, all available in various soft-to-touch textures,” says Julie who cites the faux reindeer throw and flannelette marle sheets as some of her favourites from the range.

Everything in this picture is under $49!

With a nod to the Pantone 2017 colour of the year, Greenery, the range also features plenty of the lush hue. “Inspired by global interior trends, the emerald green and the midnight blue provides glamour and sophistication with a touch of luxury to the range. Also, Pantone highlighted leaf green as its colour of the year recently so we feel the green is here to stay,” says Julie.

The new range has your kitchen sorted too with gorgeous retro-styled appliances the pick of the bunch. “Our new baby blue Euro four slice kettle and toaster, for only $39 each, are a great addition to the kitchen,” says Julie.

Kate & Kate’s summer 16/17 range inspired by Byron Bay

Designed in Byron Bay, Kate & Kate’s summer 16/17 collection brings more of the design hallmarks that have made the brand famous – think natural fibres, geometrics, understatement and deft use of colour.

katekate_campaign_blankets_cape_grey_1
“Eastern Point was inspired by the landscape and culture of Australia’s most transportive coastal retreats. Kate and I designed the bulk of the collection in stunning Byron Bay and I think the designs definitely reflect this. A study of contrasts, the collection features free-form shapes alongside stark geometric design, luxurious natural fibres, and for the first time, stunning natural linen and hand-woven cotton,” says Kate Pascoe Squires, one half of the Melbourne-based brand.

Versatile linen throw

Something of a cult item for Kate & Kate, their linen throws are back this season too and they are still as versatile as ever. From a lightweight blanket for the couch or bed, to a wall hanging, beach throw, table cloth or picnic rug there’s nothing better than a multi-tasking homewares item. Designed to fade, they’ll look even better with time.

katekate_campaign_linen_tea_towel_napkin_1
Gorgeous linen tea towels – we’d be inclined to frame a pair of them as an affordable art alternative.

“We’ve moved towards natural linen for summer, unbleached and beautifully soft. The designs are so fun, super graphic with bursts of pink, navy, green and copper. Linen throws as wall hangings, tea towels that feel like art and beautifully detailed napkins. It’s summer, ready to go,” says Kate.

katekate_campaign_blankets_atlantic_pink_2

The brand has branched out this season too with a new collection of 100 percent cotton, hand-loomed blankets and cushions, in crisp white. “I am in love our new season White Night throw and cushions. Hand woven, they are amazingly tactile and the perfect weight for summer. Oh, and there is a little bit of pom pom and tassel action too.  Joy!”

Millie Archer offering aspirational homewares for under $100

Following 18 months of research Laura O’Keeffe and her partner Paul Jager pooled together their skills in business and marketing and their love of design to create beautiful, minimalist wares under their business, Millie Archer.

millie archer5

All with a vintage, scandi edge, the products are aspirational in style yet affordable, with pricing kept to under $100. “Every design is and will only be produced in limited production runs and all our pieces are modestly priced,” explains Laura. “A combination of uniquely designed feature pieces as well as tailored catalogue items form each collection. We hope the introduction of a single Millie Archer design will assist in changing the look and feel of every home or office.”

millie archer4

Designing cushions, throws, baskets, wall prints, drinkware (mugs and glasses), jugs, vases, terrariums, hanging planters and coasters, you can expect to find a new collection on the website with the turn of each season. Launching their first range just a few short months ago, it includes four distinct styles, Laura’s favourite being the Bear + Flamingo design, which involved a collaboration with Swedish artist Linda Otton. “After discovering Linda on Instagram in 2014 I immediately fell in love with her style and the ethereal aesthetic that came through her watercolours and composition. The Bear + Flamingo illustrations within the pieces in this collection were created exclusively for Millie Archer. Applied across cushions, mugs, coasters and on fine art wall prints, their simple nature and soft, feminine style add a scandi touch to the room.”

millie archer3

millie archer

Also with a Geometric, Metallic and Arrow range, their debut collection is extremely expansive, but that doesn’t mean there’s not more designs in the works. “We’ll be releasing new pieces or a new range every four months or so and have our designs in place for the next few drops,” explains Laura. “This summer you’ll see citrus really come to the forefront of Millie Archer. We love lemons and lemon colouring, it just makes you feel all summery! We’re also investigating some pretty special glassware but that’s in the very early research and development phase.”

millie archer1

With the name Millie Archer signifying the coming together of the couple’s two favourite names, for them, it was very much like naming a child — proving just how much love they’ve put into the business. “Each design is given as much care and attention as we could possibly dedicate,” says Laura. “We hope you fall in love with them as much as we have.”

Hunting For George on surviving the first 5 years in business

Last month, Hunting For George celebrated their fifth birthday, no mean feat for a small business that started in co-owner Jo Harris’ spare bedroom!

Jo and Lucy
Jo and Lucy

An online homewares business specialising in everything from pure cotton bed linen to handmade clocks, Hunting For George entered the eCommerce market in a time very different from today. “Five years ago, online retail was dominated primarily by larger companies,” explains Jo. “The challenge for us in the early days was working out how to be relevant next to the big players. This forced us to find our own point of difference, zero in on our key strengths and present our own voice in the industry.”

hunting for george 6

hunting for george 5

[contextly_sidebar id=”sRrcUGyFwQsWhHlA8QWsLXKh4LGw4w0o”]So present their own voice they did, harnessing Jo’s skills in management and her sister/co-owner Lucy Glade-Wright’s in graphic design. Initially selling brands they liked, they later started designing themselves, however all the products shared the same commonality: a realness, an energy and a quintessential Hunting For George feel. We wanted to transfer so much of our own personality and energy into the site that when people found us online they felt like they practically knew us,” says Lucy. “The shopping experience ultimately comes down to how we like to shop, the things we like to buy and the way we like to be treated. And it’s that realness that we have created that our customers have responded to the most.”

hunting for george 1

hunting for george

As a small business, in the early days, nobody knew who they were. As a result, they had to work a lot harder, so the support from one another was never more important. “Whilst we love what we do, running your own business is really hard,” explains Jo. “I think the reason why we are still here though and still relatively sane, is due to the support we give one another and the support we now receive from the team around us. There are always times that cause you to doubt yourself and doubt is a dangerous thing. When it creeps up on you, you’ve just got to tell it to get the fuck back and keep moving forward. Pardon my French!”

hunting for george 2

It’s that attitude that’s seen the sisters reach so many milestones, one of the biggest being the success of their debut bedding collection, that not only gave them an incredible amount of confidence as designers, but also as entrepreneurs. “That was overwhelming,” says Jo. “We had styles sell out within weeks and we found ourselves scrambling to arrange reprints. At the time, it was a huge gamble as we put everything on the line with that collection. Luckily though, it paid off!”

hunting for george 3

However, their latest highlight — which they’re still beaming over — was being nominated as a finalist for the ORIA Best Small Online Retailer 2015. “We are so proud of this achievement,” explains Lucy. “Our team is a small one and we all work so hard to make Hunting For George the best it can be. To receive that level of recognition from the industry at such an early stage is a huge hats off to our team and the terrific work they put in.”

hunting for george 7

While the sisters are proving small businesses can thrive in today’s homewares industry, there’s no doubt many others are struggling. So what’s their secret? Turns out they have three. “Firstly, we worked out at the beginning who we were and what made us different. Create, don’t imitate! Secondly, we have the right people on board and surround ourselves with people smarter than us. For example, we’ve hired a good bookkeeper! And thirdly, we always keep a healthy supply of wine at the ready!”

Kate & Kate’s most exciting and most adventurous range to date

Kate & Kate have come a long way since launching a small collection of cotton blankets in 2013. Now, sisters-in-law and best friends Kate Pascoe and Kate Pascoe Squires create two seasonal collections a year, and their Summer 15/16 range, The Great Escape, may just be our favourite yet.

LLGqRLGb5qeIdrHKbo6Nlx3PwBBOkXjo1ZzsUS2-ujY

Their self-proclaimed “most adventurous season to date,” features the cotton blankets, linen throws, bath sheets and hand towels we’ve all come to love. But there’s also some very exciting new additions, with a beautiful range of linen cushions, linen napkins and beach towels added to the repertoire. “Brand new this season is our collection of 100% linen, hand screen-printed cushions each of which come with custom feather inserts,” explains Kate Pascoe Squires. “We also have gorgeous linen napkins and beach towels in both adult and kid sizes — they’re my favourite, super lush and they look amazing. We have lots of colour and excitement this summer!”

With a definite nautical undertone, seen through references to maritime and signal flags, the ocean-loving duo were excited to take such direct inspiration this season. “Being inspired by the ocean means this season’s colour palette is incredibly soft and light, with a base of navy and soft greys. It was beautiful working on the softer side of the colour scale and really allowed us to get into that summer frame of mind.”

Exclusive first look: KAS Australia’s upcoming SS15 collection

I’m very much a neutral girl — I admittedly have an unhealthy obsession with the colour (shade?!) black — so for all intents and purposes I shouldn’t like KAS Australia’s colour-crazy spring/summer 2015-16 collection. Yet, I do.

cushion_8 HR

Featuring vibrant and bold colours and prints, The Solarise Edition is contemporary and luxurious, encompassing an array of bedding, cushions, throws, Euro pillows and outdoor soft furnishings in high quality fabrications.

Inspired by four primary themes, the collection is broken into four ranges, the first being Wanderlust. An exploration of romantic bohemian patterns in a palette of blush, dusky blues and soft pastels, the prints are intricately ornate and showcase a muted and softer element to this summer collection.

In contrast, the second range Memphis Pop is a celebration of vivid colours and graphic patterns. With a distinct 80s-esque feel, styles illustrate an eye-catching and dynamically colourful aesthetic.

The third range Spectrum pays homage to an abstract and artistic influence, featuring a rainbow colour palette in bright botanical and paint effect prints.

Lastly, Amazonia is a celebration of tropical fauna influences, with bright flower and leaf motifs featuring alongside Aztec-style prints. The colours are lush, with luminous citrus, hot pink, rainforest green and Navajo orange combining beautifully.

Mondocherry: art handmade from thousands of paper feathers

Living thousands of kilometres away from your business partner, for most, would spell disaster; but for sisters Clare Scholes and Joy Stewart it only makes them work harder. With Clare based in Melbourne and Joy having recently moved to Singapore, together they own boutique Mondocherry.

Gemmola_MondoCherry16526

Stocking a range of their own work — in the form of artworks and textiles — as well as the wares of local designers, it is their new birds of a feather series that deserves the most attention.

Gemmola_MondoCherry16360

Made from feathers individually hand cut from watercolour paper and then carefully water coloured, the artworks are inspired by the rich, layered texture of tribal juju hats, as well as the intricate detailing of an individual feather

“We love happy art and wanted to create a series of pieces that have graphic impact from afar but have a story to tell up close,” explains Clare. “When creating a new feather artwork we are usually inspired by a particularly beautiful colour combination and then we are impatient to start painting and cutting and watch the artwork evolve. We find the intricate process of cutting the feathers quite meditative. Others do yoga, but we cut and paint a thousand tiny feathers!”

Gemmola_MondoCherry16565

[contextly_sidebar id=”HuttRUvIgha6lwFKUhySzVDYgESNQwad”]Chatting endlessly on Skype and on the phone, for the sisters collaborating is something they have always done. “It is the easiest thing in the world to design together as we often, separately, come up with exactly the same idea,” says Joy. “We very rarely disagree about our designs and are grateful that we can usually critique each other’s work without the need to be super polite and tactful. People often ask us: “Who does what in an artwork?” and the simple answer is that we really work as one.”

Gemmola_MondoCherry16390

Having worked with paper for a number of years, the birds of a feather series was simply an evolution, founded from sitting down together and trying new techniques and ideas. Also designing a range of cushions, throws and lampshades, all products go through the same rigorous collaboration process. “We find that new ideas can’t be forced and if we go in with the intention of coming up with something new it is usually a disaster,” explains Clare. “Our inspiration comes from experimenting and usually we have that aha moment when we know that something works.”

Gemmola_MondoCherry18805

Deciding long ago to not follow trends or predict what people might buy, the duo make sure to only make and stock what they love, and they have some exciting plans underway. “We have so many ideas in the pipeline from furniture to bedding,” says Joy. “We also want to continue to support other artists and designers, especially local ones. In fact, much of our jewellery and homewares are actually created by artisans living and working within a few kilometres of our shop!”

Beautiful homewares that empower women in developing countries

When husband and wife Rick and Annette Carter took a trip to India and the Philippines, a seed was planted for what would grow to become their ethical lifestyle label, One Another. With the products very beautiful in their own right, the fair trade component is just an added bonus as far as the consumer’s concerned!

interiors addict one another 5

Then working for not-for-profit Opportunity International, the couple were welcomed into the villages and homes of many inspiring women using amazing skills to support their families. So, with Rick’s background in design and photography and Annette’s in fashion, they decided to combine their love of modern design with the traditional artisan skills of the talented women they had met.

interiors addict one another 4

Creating a collection of ethically made cushions, throws, clutch bags, yarn bowls, yarn pendants, scarves and artworks, their products are less trend driven and more focused on handmade qualities and unique textures. Their latest collection, Intersect, which is now available online and will be in stores early May, combines structural grids, classic checks and 3D quilts using their trademark hand embroidery and hand-woven T-Yarn.

“We love all things mono so for this collection, we kept the base palette pretty neutral so that the textures did the talking,” says Rick. “We have used lots of charcoal marle, cool grey and crisp white, but added touches of denim, pale blue and blush for subtle colour or a hit of tangerine for some zing! Ultimately, the collection is where modern design ‘intersects’ with traditional artisan skills to create products that help empower women to rise above poverty.”

Currently working with three collectives – that combined provide work for 20 women – One Another has partners all across the developing world. “The perfect hand embroidery is stitched in India, the beautiful loop weaving is from South Africa and the new hand loomed wool throws are from near the Nepal border,” explains Rick. “We are also starting to develop some wall art with a new collective in Africa which we hope to release in a few months.”

Working with women who may be widowed or have parents too sick to work, they provide fair pay, safe and clean working conditions and the option to work at home, should they need to care for their family. “For example, they work normal hours and have a weekend, which is practically unheard of in India. By using their unique skills, we are helping empower the women, transform their communities and create a better future for their families.”

What is also incredibly special about One Another, is the personal touch they add to each final product. “The women are at the heart of everything we do and that’s the reason why every product we make is hand-signed by the embroiderer or weaver who made it. This signature is a source of much pride for the women as well as letting the customers know the actual name of the person who has put their hands and heart into making the cushion or throw they have sitting on their couch.”

With the hope to increase their impact and work with more and more groups of women, One Another’s end goal is to open up their own store. “We’d love to showcase some of our favourite ethical brands from around the world and be a place where consumers will know every purchase makes a difference.”

The decorator range is all about understated luxury with rich textures and muted colours. A palette of pink, nude and black plays off rich marble and timber. Candles, mirrors, votives and frames are highlighted with hints of copper, plated gold and smoked glass. Pared back pieces like a marble clock and side tables in oak and black bring an easy sophistication.

Serving is expanded with the introduction of baking dishes and ramekins. Oversized salt and pepper grinders and stacked wooden boards play on scale and proportion. A circular marble board makes a bold graphic base for the Tapas dining range, updated in blue-grey and lemon yellow tones.
