Native bees inspire designer’s new range of luxurious rugs

Inspired by the beauty, variety, and vulnerability of our native bee population, Designer Rugs has worked with design studio House of Heras to create their second rug collection, the Birds and the Bees. These luxurious rugs are equally at home in anything from a federation style home to an opulent hotel.

The Birds of Pine rug

House of Heras is a boutique design studio led by award winning designer Silvana Azzi Heras. Silvana has been widely recognised for her work on films such as The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge

The Cinnamon Bloom design

This new collection sprung from Silvana’s fascination with Australia’s native bee population. “We were looking at so many different types of bees and how intricate and beautiful each species was,” says Silvana. “In a moment of inspiration, I knew these bees needed to be the focus of my next range.”

While still retaining the nod to the Arts and Crafts movement of the previous collection, these new designs have a deeper and more opulent colour palette of teal green, burgundy and coral, inspired by 70s design. “I’ve always had a love of the 1970s,” Silvana explains. “I still have vivid memories of specific clothes, homewares and packaging from around my childhood home during those early years.”

The Bees Knees design

Consisting of four rectangular rugs, and one round rug, the collection is hand tufted in New Zealand wool with highlights of shimmering bamboo silk.

The Story of Things: a new store for Australian design

The Story of Things is a new online marketplace for unique goods, homewares and accessories made by Australian artists and designers.

It’s the brainchild of photographers Jess Reftel Evans and Martin Evans and interior designer Petrina Turner. The trio met back in 2015 after being introduced by celebrated stylist Megan Morton. Their passion for the Australian design community has naturally led to the launch of The Story of Things, which is at its heart, a celebration of local creatives.

The Story of Things founders Petrina Turner, Jess Reftel Evans and Martin Evans

In 2018, who you buy something from seems to be just as important as what you bought. The rise in ethical shopping has seen more customers turn their backs on big brands and instead seek out furniture and homewares from their local creative community.

The Story of Things has jumped on this wave and aims to connect its customers with its creators. The beautifully designed website contains detailed biographies of the more than 20 artists and designers. Perfect for gift shopping for loved ones (or treating yourself), everything is designed in Australia and ethically made.

Here are some of our favourite homewares but there’s also jewellery, scarves and more:

Limited edition print by Fractured Flora

Klein Gem Stool by Tuckbox Design

Wall hanging by artist Jac.Weave

Hammered mug by State of Permanence

Rainbow Object by Capra Designs

Shine On wall light by Electric Confetti

Finders Keepers’ first Adelaide market launches this winter

For the first time, Adelaide residents will be able to experience the magic that is the Finders Keepers markets this winter.

Arguably the country’s biggest and best design market, Finders Keepers launched in Sydney in 2008 and currently runs in Melbourne and Brisbane and too.

“The design community in Adelaide have been super keen for us to head that way since we launched, so we’re incredibly excited to be able to host our inaugural event in South Australia, “ says co-founder Brooke Johnston.

Over 200 stalls are expected to set up in the historical Jubilee Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds at Wayville from 12-to-14 August this year.

unspecified

“We can’t wait to see what new and unique items the creative makers of Adelaide bring to our new annual event, and we’re sure that shoppers will be immensely impressed by what’s on offer,” says Brooke.

unspecified-5

Applications for stallholders are currently open so if you’re the creator of original and creative work, independent designs or high quality handmade products, it’s the perfect forum in which to gain invaluable exposure and kick start your design business.

“We provide a limited number of debut spaces to fledgling artists and designers who’d like to road test their products with the public or are keen to enlist their business into the exciting world of Finders Keepers,” says the market’s communications and sponsorships manager, Angela D’Alton.

unspecified-7

“Our market maintains a reputation as the best for designers launching their labels, for makers to meet their audience and to connect with the lovely, like-minded people of this community,” says Angela.

Hoping to elevate the status of this important program, they will also be offering a $5,000 for the inaugural Beacon Lighting Award, a prize that will also include the possibility of being stocked in their stores.

Scott Robinson, senior category buyer and lighting designer for Beacon Lighting, believes it is important for the company to get involved: “Beacon Lighting has a key focus on delivering the latest design trends from all over the world to the Australian market. Through our travels and trend spotting, we have come across great designs from emerging Australian designers. Through a collaborative approach, we would like to help young designers and artists in producing and bringing their designs to market.”

While in the past they have generally looked overseas for great lighting designs, Beacon recognise that the calibre of design talent here in Australia is certainly on a world-class level. With outstanding production capabilities and global design networks, they feel that they can help emerging designers get noticed both on a national and international stage.

VIVID celebrates its 12th this year at Decor + Design and has become an integral platform to support new and emerging Australian designers. Competition categories include lighting, student, concept, commercial and green. Finalists will be on display at Decor + Design, from 10-to-13 July at Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
