New furniture & homewares: Our favourite October finds

Spring has certainly sprung on the home front with lots of lovely new things hitting the market. From a cute rainbow footstool to Mimco’s first foray into the home, and Annie Sloan’s latest shades, here are a few of our favourite October finds.

Circlehome: A new Aussie furniture start-up, the Circlehome range is a fun celebration of colour. The velvet Milly Button ottoman features a chic scalloped design while the highly Instagrammable Rainbow footstool (from $199), would look great in a kid’s room. Inspired by dresses of the 1920’s, the Flapper footstool ($399) caught our eye too.

Annie Sloan latest: Two new colours have been added to the Annie Sloan chalk paint line-up. ‘Oxford Navy’ is a sumptuous, ink-like navy while ‘Athenian Black’ is a long-awaited true black that adds drama and depth to any up-cycling project.

Beeline Design: 18 months since the launch of the brand’s Ridge Collection, Melbourne’s Beeline Design has added two new pieces to the range – a dining table and console. With marble and timber tops, the new pieces are available in statement shades of cranberry, raspberry and black.

Mimco home: The latest fashion brand to enter the homewares space, these colourful bird and zebra-print cushions make quite the statement. $99.95.

Trit: The modern rattan trend persists and with these curved pieces you can see why. The ‘Cane Low Cabinet’ ($3150) combines an ash wood frame with rattan while the ‘Cane Dressing Cabinet’ ($3980) has a mirror inside for make-up touch-ups.

New Beeline Design range inspired by corrugated iron

The team from Melbourne’s Beeline Design are back with a gorgeous new collection that draws on an unlikely muse. Established by cabinet maker Adam Brislin and fashion designer Lucy Grant, the company is notable for its handcrafted timber furniture and its latest ‘Ridge Collection’ looks to, of all things, corrugated iron for inspiration.

“I had wanted to incorporate the use of corrugated metal into our designs for a long time but had not found the right execution,” says Adam of the range that was inspired by his childhood growing up in rural Western Australia surrounded by farming land dotted with traditional corrugated iron sheds.

But what struck me was how Adam had managed to turn something highly utilitarian into a thing of elegant beauty, the execution of which was no simple feat. “Finding a way to join the metal on our table bases seamlessly and without welding was definitely a hurdle we had to overcome – but we never shy away from a challenge!” says Adam.

The range features corrugated curves covered in soft Australian leather paired with solid sustainably sourced Tasmanian Oak or stone. “Our goal was to create a collection using what is regarded as quite a utilitarian material and elevate it to a new level of luxe by covering it in leather and pairing it with stone and timber,” says Lucy Grant, the other half of the talented duo.

“Our favourite piece would have to be the Ridge Buffet as it really is the show piece in the collection where every little detail has been considered. The leather is hand applied, the handles are hand shaped, the internal drawers are leather fronted. There is nothing like visualising a piece for so long and finally seeing it in a physical form,” says Lucy.

The Ridge buffet is Adam and Lucy’s favourite piece from the new range.

To celebrate the launch of the collection, the brand teamed up with students from former Blockhead Jenna Densten’s Design School to style the pieces. “We collaborated with their students last year to style a shoot for us and found them so professional and creative making them an easy choice again this year. When I set them the task of shooting this collection in a ‘modern minimalist’ way I knew they would rise to the challenge,” says Lucy.

Adam and Lucy have just shown the range at Denfair (to an enthusiastic response), and they have exciting expansion plans too having just signed a deal that will see their furniture stocked in 23 stores across mainland China.

We love: This unique furniture and its woven leather details

Melbourne furniture design company Beeline Design is back with their second range. Titled ‘The Cuba Collection,’ the gorgeous range is handcrafted from sustainably sourced Tasmanian Oak and natural leather and we are rather smitten! Combining straight lines with soft edges and lovely use of woven leather, the collection is an ode to mid-Century design but with a twist. A refreshing take on current trends, we haven’t seen anything quite like this before which makes it even more exciting.

“We wanted to design a range of simple understated shapes that each featured a unique aspect that was a little unexpected,” says Lucy Grant, co-owner of Beeline Design.

One such detail is the woven leather magazine rack that forms part of the collection’s coffee table – a triumph of form and function! “Be it the magazine holder in the coffee table or the leather strapping that acts as a hinge on the ladder rack we wanted to challenge ourselves in how creatively we could use the the two materials (timber and leather) together,” says Lucy.

Magazine rack detail – we love!

As is customary for the brand, they’ve taken a current trend (in this case wood and leather) and created their own unique version of the look. Not only is it a gorgeous aesthetic, it’s also built to last with each piece handmade in Beeline Design’s Melbourne workshop.

Another standout design, the woven leather bar stools are pretty gorgeous and another timeless design too. From a super modern interior to a more classic home, we can see this stool complementing myriad spaces.

Traditional skills inspire Beeline’s cool copper furniture

A lifelong love of timber has finally become a homewares business for furniture maker Adam Brislin and his partner Lucy Grant. And it’s off to a great start.

CAT-COVER3

Established in 2010 as a bespoke business it wasn’t until they created the Calypso Stool that Beeline Design changed direction, and the introduction of copper and brass versions last year left them little time to work on much else! They’ve now completed their first full range; a selection of simple yet stylish pieces which continue their relaxed modern aesthetic. Each piece celebrates the beauty of timber accented with a facet or edging in non-ferrous metals or colour.

Each piece is produced in their Preston VIC workshop using only sustainably sourced timbers and the finest materials and finishes.

Adam’s career as a furniture maker has seen him working for some of Melbourne’s most reputable companies honing his trade, while Lucy’s background in fashion design has helped them to create their own unique style. Their influences range from the Danish designers of the mid-century to the Bauhaus school and Art Deco periods.

The pair also take a lot of inspiration from the co-operative they work out of in Preston. Worco was established in 1979 and is Victoria’s second oldest co-operative still in operation today. It houses a number of heritage trades including a blacksmith, ceramicist, luthier — that’s someone who makes or repairs string instruments (except harps), before you ask —  and a collection of fellow passionate woodworkers. They credit the collaborative and supportive nature of the workshop as integral to the growth and development of Beeline.

Selling their wares in design hubs Proforma in Melbourne and Koskela in Sydney has no doubt contributed to their success, showcasing their pieces next to some of the top names in Australian design talent.

Having recently launched their range at Decor+Design, they are now flat out filling orders but are already thinking up their new collection.
