Gold bathroom accents: there’s many ways to use them!

Gold accents have been gracing the most enviable bathrooms since, well, forever. While metallic embellishments have been trending over recent years, gold is making a huge comeback in the bathroom — but there’s more than one way to get the look.

Emma Joyce from luxury bathing brand Victoria + Albert Baths shares some of her favourite gold accent bathroom designs, with tips on recreating this touch of luxury in your own home.

Dark + Moody

Designed by Heirloom Studios, this modern oasis is the epitome of a moody masterpiece. Elements like charcoal floor tiles, a deep black vanity, and ‘midnight’ mirror-framing transcend the space into a calm depth of darkness. Lightness is re-introduced through an almost full-wall window, which floods the room with a natural glow.

The dark and deep statement pieces are offset by lighter elements, including a turquoise and black penny round mosaic feature wall, tropical plants, and of course the soft, gold finishes of the tapware and fittings. Victoria + Albert’s ios bath creates a dramatic feature as it stands pride of place in gloss white against its moody surrounds.

Recreate the look: There’s a pre-conceived idea that gold accents will create a ‘kitsch’ look, when, really, they can complement so many interior styles and are flexible to most people’s tastes. If you like a more sombre aesthetic, look to colour blocking with dark charcoal and light greys. This bathroom is a great example of using soft, warm finishes to bring life to a dark and moody space. The designer has chosen to use gold accents on the faucets, wall light, and through decorative pieces as supporting elements to elevate the ambience.

Light + Airy

Crafted by M James Design Group, this modern take on traditional Victorian design creates a ‘new age’ spa-like retreat that is all about luxury. A grand space deserves grand features, which is established here through the floor-to-ceiling marble-look walls and the gold-plated tapware finishes.

These striking elements are softened through the layering of flowing white sheer drapes, white and navy patterned tiles, and the striking Victoria + Albert ios bath in gloss white drawing the eye into the space.

Recreate this look: If you want to keep things neutral, a splash of colour isn’t the only way to make a space pop. Texture is key when it comes to adding depth to an interior and is an easy way to introduce different materials like marble surfaces, patterned tiles, and crown mouldings.

In this bathroom, the designer has taken it up a notch by adding finishes and fixtures with a modern golden accent. If you’re after a ‘less is more’ aesthetic, stick to the same finish throughout the space and hold back on introducing more than three shades into your bathroom’s colour palette.

Mixed It Up

The recently refurbished Orchard Cottage, an Airbnb rental property in Australia’s Blue Mountains, is the perfect embodiment of how the finer details can elevate any bathroom.

White tiled walls and a high ceiling give a feeling of light and space, while a Crittall-style shower screen in black divides the bathroom, creating a separate cocoon for shower and the York freestanding bath by Victoria + Albert.

Warmth and personality are introduced for balance through natural wood and gold brass fittings, including striking antique lights above the vanity unit.

Recreate this look: The crucial element to mixing finishes is to not go overboard, keeping to the rule of two to four varieties of gold finishes. An easy way to keep your bathroom stylish is through matching; notice how the towel hanger and taps pair nicely and the wall lights and mirror have a similar brushed gold look? This helps create a refined feel in the bathroom.

Another rule of thumb is to have a foundation palette contrasting the gold elements. For example, if you’re going to install high-shine finishes, complement this with a timber vanity or matt-finish basin or bath.

Play With Pattern

Designed by Leanne Ford Interiors, this stunning Moroccan-inspired bathroom takes the user to a luxurious Marrakesh spa. In this compact space, a sense of depth is created through the striking turquoise and white mosaic feature wall, which is surrounded by white gloss landscape subway tiles.

Personality and texture are introduced through the vintage feature ceiling light and satin brass mixer, which creates a sense of old-world luxury.

Standing pride of place on its own elevated step is the Victoria + Albert ios bath in gloss white. A modern freestanding bath brings an air of luxury to any space.

Recreate this look: If you want your space to reflect your inner ‘maximalist’, try a tile feature wall in a block colour or pattern finish. Take cues from this exquisite bathroom by adding gold exposed piping for a bold feature. If a white tiled bathroom is your dream, add subtle features by layering the tiles in a herringbone or crosshatch pattern to bring dimension to the space. Subway tiles in a landscape or vertical pattern are also making a comeback.

White on white kitchen is stylist owner’s dream!

Interior stylist Melanie Webster’s new white-on-white kitchen is a world away from its dingy predecessor and she couldn’t be happier with it!

With a little help from her business partner Melinda Raydan, she set about transforming a typical 90s design into something, light, bright, textured and open.

“Although quite a big space, the original concept was dark, dated and in desperate need of some brightening up. Whilst the timber cabinetry and solid bench tops were all in perfect condition, that combined with slate floors and no space allocation for a fridge, provided the perfect combination for a renovation,” Melanie says.

BEFORE

Step one was to re-work the original floor plan. “Being that the kitchen is in the centre of the home, we wanted to ensure the layout provided easy access into both living spaces and ensuring a balanced flow throughout. An island bench was our initial choice, however we soon worked out that this was not going to be the most effective use of space. Alternatively, we opted for an L-shaped bench, which effectively opened up the kitchen, enabling us to comfortably place four barstools along the bench for family gatherings.”

Removing the side wall between the dining area and kitchen also made a huge difference. “We wanted a beautiful open space; a simple aesthetic with a touch of classic Hamptons, warm neutrals and bright whites.”

Although the previous cabinets and bench tops were quality timber, they just didn’t fall within their vision. Kinsman Kitchens’ matte white shaker cabinets replaced the dark weathered cupboards, and Melanie, whose home is in Mount Martha, VIC, opted for gold tapware and accessories to give the space a touch of glamour.

“With an ample amount of bench space, we chose RHF Stone Calacutta Classic, supplied and installed by Simple Benchtops, adding an element of sophistication and style. We chose a white matte herringbone tile as our splashback hero piece, a deep white sink and modern black appliances, making the space feel complete.”

All the smaller details are what adds up to make it a winning space, according to Melanie. “From the James Hardie Axon panels to the matte white herringbone splashback and gold accents, we adore the way each feature connects, creating a feeling of home.”

The biggest challenge for the design duo, who own Raydan Blair Interior Stylists, was the limitation with the layout. “Without making structural changes, we were restricted in sticking to the existing floor plan, minus a few tweaks.”

And Melanie says you can’t go wrong with a white-on-white palette! “We added texture through pendants, splashback and luxe finishes, finalising a design that will appeal to many demographics and stand the test of time. We could not be more pleased with how our kitchen has been transformed, from a dark and dreary space, to an inviting and beautiful room in the heart of the home.”

Black tapware leader, Meir, launches stunning new metallics

Sponsored by Meir Australia

Not satisfied with having the largest range of black tapware in the world, thriving Australian business Meir has branched into mixed metals. And they’re gorgeous! I’m earmarking them for my future bathroom renos right now!

Tiger Bronze

Those in the know will confirm that the trend for black taps is most definitely here to stay but other colours (basically, anything but been-there-done-that chrome) are emerging as future classics too. And this was clear at all the big international design trade fairs this year.

The Melbourne family business have spent the last 12 months behind the scenes working on the new additions to their premium matte black tapware. Tiger Bronze and Champagne are the first of four upcoming colour finishes to be released in as many months and here at Interiors Addict, we are in love! Tiger Bronze is a unique combination of bronze and copper and Champagne is a beautiful cool gold.

Bath, shower and kitchen mixers, shower heads, toilet roll holders, towel rails, wall and basin mixers are all available.

Champagne

Today’s bathrooms are so much more than utilitarian spaces; they’re sanctuaries. And consumers are keener than ever to add a little luxury and personality to this space. We think tapware is the jewellery of the modern bathroom. And even if you’re reluctant to be too ‘out there’ with your bathroom choices, statement tapware on a simple and classic subway tile backdrop for example, can make a huge impact.

Equally, in kitchens, that mixer tap can be the crowning glory.

“We’ve been working with leading Australian architects to create a range that’s the very essence of luxury tapware. This product also fulfils consumer demand on modern colour trends,” says CEO Rick Bazerghi. “By limiting the Tiger Bronze selection to a small portion of our overall range of products, it offers customers an exclusive and bespoke product.”

Tiger Bronze

Handcrafted and made with European parts, this premium range is priced higher than its traditional chrome or matte black counterparts. It’s available to the general public through any of the company’s stockists (including Reece and Harvey Norman Commercial) or online at The Block Shop.

Meir is showcasing Australia as a leader in bathroom trends, expanding internationally this year with a London office and distributors in Amsterdam, Cape Town and Auckland. They have plans to open up offices and distribution in Dubai, Singapore, Denmark and Japan.

Customers benefit from a no-questions-asked returns policy and excellent customer service, with a receptionist available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Trending: Freedom Kitchens’ Autumn 2017 collection

By Felicity Page

As the seasons change and the weather cools, we find ourselves appreciating our interior living spaces more than ever. And as the heart of the home, the kitchen is a hub that many will look to makeover this Autumn.

Freedom Kitchens’ new Autumn 2017 Catalogue reveals that while white has everlasting appeal within the kitchen colour palette, it’s the inclusion of contrasting colours like metallics or matte black, luxe materials, seamless storage solutions, and interesting textures that are key to being on trend with the latest looks. See below for a taster of new season styles and trending elements in kitchens for Autumn 2017.

MEET THE NEW AGE SHAKER
This stunning kitchen is an example of how black is becoming the new white in kitchens. From tapware to cabinetry, black – and especially matte black – lends a luxe edge to the overall look.

The New Age Shaker

This particular kitchen puts a modern spin on the traditional Shaker-style design with its Sierra cabinets in matte black offset by Caesarstone benchtops in pure white. The metallic highlight via gold tapware combines beautifully with other luxe elements like the marble splashback, and the supersized island bench top that offers plenty of seating and built in storage space.

MEET THE NEW NORDIC
The Scandi look isn’t fading with summer – the fresh appeal of whites, greys and timber tones make it a popular choice, that can be elevated with luxe elements.

Although fresh and relaxed, it’s the luxury features that make this kitchen feel special, from the waterfall Caesarstone island bench, to the eye-catching feature wall and splashback in marble herringbone tiles. Copper toned pendant lights make a stunning pairing to the blonde timber cabinetry in Sublime Teak Ravine, and also lend a warmth that is trans-seasonal.

The New Nordic

MEET THE BOLD + BEAUTIFUL
Those looking to make a statement may opt to create some wow factor through warmth and texture, as demonstrated through this kitchen’s use of Cherry Riftwood cabinetry which flows right through to the butler’s pantry – scoring major points for seamless storage.

The stunning Caesarstone island benchtop in the new marble-look White Attica floats atop a custom down-lit shelf, adding to the sense of contemporary drama. This is then cleverly softened and balanced by the choice of art deco pendant lighting, showcasing once more that contrast is a key trend this season. Yes, you may recognise the kitchen from the last series of The Block!

The Block week 1 room reveals: Master en suites

Hooray! We’re back to Block room reveals on Sunday nights, my favourite! Last night didn’t disappoint with a mixed bag of finished rooms and as much disappointment as there was praise from the judges. I’m pleased to say my favourite room, Julia and Sasha’s, won. Let’s recap on what the judges said and who scored what…

WILL & KARLIE

With its mix of rose gold and black finishes (personally I’d prefer one or the other but the judges didn’t seem to have a problem with the inconsistency, so what do I know?!), they were impressed overall. Neale said the pair had raised the bar from the previous week’s pod challenge and Shaynna said that for a young couple, they’d shown maturity and a great understanding of the sense of luxury required. Neale liked the nod to deco in the black blinds while Shaynna said the vanity was all wrong and took away from a lot of the good points. The lighting too, although pretty, was totally impractical.

H1_R1_Ensuite_Will_Karlie-17

Overall though, feedback was good. Neale said the bathroom would help sell the apartment, Shaynna loved the styling and Darren said the couple had proven they knew what they were doing.

H1_R1_Ensuite_Will_Karlie-20

The couple ended up coming second place with 25 points.

DAN & CARLEEN

On first glance, I absolutely loved what this couple had tried to do, although on closer inspection, a few things did fall apart. I’m still mad for their subway tiles, gold tapware and black tub though! They made brave choices, even if some of them didn’t quite come off. And their look was certainly more Art Deco than anyone else’s. Perhaps a little too much.

H2_R1_Ensuite_Dan_Carleen-21

Neale’s first impression was “wow” too. He said it ticked a lot of boxes. Shaynna agreed they had certainly taken on the whole deco look and loved the distressed subways and the patterned floor tiles. “The direction of the style is brilliant.” It was all going so well. Then…Darren! “I hate it!” While he couldn’t get past the unfinished floor tiles he also hated the raised bath and said it was a trip hazard and all wrong. The placement of the towels was also really awkward for anyone getting out of the shower.

H2_R1_Ensuite_Dan_Carleen-26

None of the judges rated Dan and Carleen’s styling. The ‘I love the shit out of you’ candle was an odd choice in anyone’s book and I agreed with Shaynna that the Missoni towels, although high end, didn’t go at all. Sadly, the couple didn’t take the feedback well at all and found it all very personal. Hopefully they’ll get a little more used to being on a reality TV show as the weeks go on!

This couple came last with 17 points.

ANDY & BEN

All I want to say about this pair is “Oh bless!” I mean really, who uses Radox shower gel, disposable razors and toothbrushes as the finishing touches in a high end bathroom?! But these young beginners are so genuine and have such great attitudes you can’t help but love them! And while their bathroom wasn’t a showstopper, their call to change the floorplan and keep part of it as an extra bedroom was, as Darren said, a master stroke.

H3_R1_Ensuite_Andy_Ben-22

Sadly though, Neale said it all felt a little bit cheap and Shaynna said it was everything she didn’t want to see (apart from the aforementioned Radox and razors, also basic chrome tapware, a Scandi vanity and concrete look tiles). Neale said they’d created  a bachelor pad feel and Darren noted that even if you know nothing about Art Deco, there’s nothing to stop you googling and finding out some pointers!

H3_R1_Ensuite_Andy_Ben-3

This likeable pair still managed to come third with 21.5 points. Again, bless!

JULIA & SASHA

This was my absolute favourite so I’m pleased the girls won with 26.5 points. Oh my, that gold tapware! I just love gold tapware but reluctantly decided it wasn’t the right choice for my own bathroom reno (starting today incidentally, so watch this space). So this bathroom left me feeling a tad jealous! The judges were also impressed with Darren declaring it “the business”; the perfect blend of contemporary and sophisticated with classic, bygone era.

H4_R1_Ensuite_Julia_Sasha-23

Shaynna thought the cabinetry was perfection (agreed, so classy!) and Neale said it was very sophisticated and luxe.

H4_R1_Ensuite_Julia_Sasha-36

While there were a few unfinished bits and the basin taps were too low, Darren still said the room was “spectacularly beautiful”.

A well deserved first place!

KIM & CHRIS

Oh dear. I hate to add insult to injury when these guys got such a bashing from the judges, but my eyes! I really was not a fan, but I was so impressed with the way the Newcastle couple took the feedback on the chin and vowed to learn from it. Brilliant attitudes and I really hope they go on to better things!

H5_R1_Ensuite_Kim_Chris-27

It did not start well with the judges with Shaynna asking ‘where are we?’ and Neale replying ‘in a time machine going backwards’! He added that it was completely soulless and off brief. Harsh but true. Shaynna said the shower tiles were ugly and just awful but thought the lighting and tapware were good choices (can’t say I agreed on the lighting). Where she was definitely right, and fair, was in saying that the quality of their work and time management were incredible.

H5_R1_Ensuite_Kim_Chris-17

They came in second from last with 19.5 points.
