Shaynna Blaze’s guide to styling your table this Christmas

I love a dinner party, but if I’m honest, plans for a stylish spread quickly go out the window; especially when friends are on their way and you haven’t even started cooking. But not this festive season! This summer I’m going to create a feast for the stomach and the eyes… with Shaynna Blaze‘s help that is. Check out her top tips for styling a festive platter and the perfect tabletop.

How to style a festive platter

The more food, the better: A simple block of cheese and some dip and crackers just doesn’t cut it these days. Select a few different types of cheeses and layer with nuts, olives and fresh berries, and use dried fruits to fill all the gaps and cover any empty board space – a sumptuous smorgasBOARD!

Build from a perfect base: Choose a beautiful timber board or marble tray to serve, and pair with cheese knives and serving tools that follow the same aesthetic so it doesn’t overwhelm the food.

Use colour: Juicy strawberries,  green grapes and pomegranates not only taste good but visually make your platter an enticing feast

Balance: Start with the biggest items i.e. cheese, dips, bowls of olives etc. and build around this. Play around with different angles and different heights for your meat, cheese and crackers. It gives an extra dimension to the spread!

Variety is key: A platter should have a variety of textures, colours and tastes. Be mindful of this when selecting your food and don’t be afraid to pile it high with cheese, fruit, meats and pickled vegetables as a mouth-watering assortment of perfection.

Don’t forget the wine: Stemless wine glasses are an alternative to having lots of height on your table, use them on their own or mixed with stemmed glasses to give variation to your table.

How to style the perfect tabletop

1. Invest in a few core pieces like cutlery, wine glasses and hurricane lamps or vases to dress up your celebrations in the lead-up to Christmas.

2. Adding elegant cutlery to your dining table has the same impact as adding beautiful earrings to a little black dress.

3. When setting the table for dinner parties, keep your centrepiece low so sight lines aren’t obstructed and the conversation can flow.

4. To achieve a formal feel with your dining table setting, stick to a single colour palette for your dinnerware and placemats.

5. Create a casual look that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner by styling simple timber accessories with grey chinaware.

Classic with a twist: Shaynna Blaze’s new tableware range

A couple of months ago we brought you the first collection of homewares by Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe. Today we can bring you the next instalment… and it’s only got better!

Featuring a curated collection of tableware, from cutlery and stoneware to vases and cheese boards, the wares are functional works of art. Versatility is key with textures of oak, marble, fine china and glass, plus tones of brass, copper, whites, blues and greys.

“Chinaware, cutlery, glass and platters all play a significant role in the gathering spaces of the home,” says Shaynna. “Whether you’re using these pieces for a dinner party for 12 – or curling up to breakfast in bed for one – I wanted to create a range that works perfectly whatever the occasion.”

The philosophy behind the tableware is classic with a twist – pieces that work in either a casual or formal environment, and can dress your table up or down. “When styling a dining area, the table is at the heart of things,” explains Shaynna. “I see table tops as a moving piece of artwork.”

With an extensive range it’s hard to pick a favourite but for Shaynna it’s the white and copper cutlery: “It’s very different, so eating with them makes each bite an experience and elevates it from the routine!”

Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe is available now in more than 50 Harris Scarfe stores across Australia, and will be avaliable online from today (Wednesday 25 October).

Shaynna, Shaynna, Shaynna… what can’t that woman do! The interior designer and Block judge has added another line to her already overflowing resume with the launch of her new homewares range, Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe.

Inspired by the open and natural elements of the woodlands, the quilts, sheet sets, cushions, towels, bathroom accessories and soon be introduced tableware, all tick the two vital boxes of quality-made and affordable.

“The bedlinen is a fantastic quality and the pieces are all functional, essential items for the home,” explains Shaynna. “I wanted to build a range that was classic in essence, with a unique style that encouraged a bit of personal flair and had the ability to be mixed and matched to suit all homes.”

The tones, patterns and textures featured are all unique but complimentary, with a strong palette of blues and greys, a homage to the outside world. “One of my favourite places is with nature. The textures and unstructured elements really inspire me and designing this range allowed me to capture some of that and allow it to be brought into the home.”
