Shaynna Blaze’s guide to styling your table this Christmas

I love a dinner party, but if I’m honest, plans for a stylish spread quickly go out the window; especially when friends are on their way and you haven’t even started cooking. But not this festive season! This summer I’m going to create a feast for the stomach and the eyes… with Shaynna Blaze‘s help that is. Check out her top tips for styling a festive platter and the perfect tabletop.

Shaynna

How to style a festive platter

The more food, the better: A simple block of cheese and some dip and crackers just doesn’t cut it these days. Select a few different types of cheeses and layer with nuts, olives and fresh berries, and use dried fruits to fill all the gaps and cover any empty board space – a sumptuous smorgasBOARD!

Build from a perfect base: Choose a beautiful timber board or marble tray to serve, and pair with cheese knives and serving tools that follow the same aesthetic so it doesn’t overwhelm the food.

Use colour: Juicy strawberries,  green grapes and pomegranates not only taste good but visually make your platter an enticing feast

Balance: Start with the biggest items i.e. cheese, dips, bowls of olives etc. and build around this. Play around with different angles and different heights for your meat, cheese and crackers. It gives an extra dimension to the spread!

Variety is key: A platter should have a variety of textures, colours and tastes. Be mindful of this when selecting your food and don’t be afraid to pile it high with cheese, fruit, meats and pickled vegetables as a mouth-watering assortment of perfection.

Don’t forget the wine: Stemless wine glasses are an alternative to having lots of height on your table, use them on their own or mixed with stemmed glasses to give variation to your table.

How to style the perfect tabletop

1. Invest in a few core pieces like cutlery, wine glasses and hurricane lamps or vases to dress up your celebrations in the lead-up to Christmas.

2. Adding elegant cutlery to your dining table has the same impact as adding beautiful earrings to a little black dress.

3. When setting the table for dinner parties, keep your centrepiece low so sight lines aren’t obstructed and the conversation can flow.

4. To achieve a formal feel with your dining table setting, stick to a single colour palette for your dinnerware and placemats.

5. Create a casual look that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner by styling simple timber accessories with grey chinaware.

Reno Addict’s Lauren Ellis shares her Christmas table setting

With ice-cold winters, it’s little surprise that Scandinavians know how to create swoon-worthy interiors for Christmas – and the wonderful news is the crisp, minimalistic look is easy to replicate!

I already had most of the decorations at home, and managed to pull this Scandi-inspired table setting together for under $100. So, with Christmas now just an exciting few weeks away, here’s a peek at how my family will be dining this Christmas, and a few tips to help you achieve the look at home.

Keep it elegant and understated, by opting for a monochrome palette. Group decorations in uneven numbers and add touches of gold or silver for a festive touch.

Ditch the tinsel and add a little sparkle with gold ribbon, copper twinkle lights and candleholders.

Make your guests feel extra special, with personalised name tags and plates wrapped up like presents.

Skip the iron and crumple your linen to add texture to your table setting.

A handmade pine wreath makes a beautiful statement, as does the greenery on the table.

IKEA’s formula for the perfect Christmas lunch table

Everyone wants to enjoy the perfect Christmas lunch, from the family eating it, to the host serving it, so making sure the table is a welcoming place for guests to linger is just as important as the food itself. An imaginatively laid table presents the perfect opportunity to spend more time with your loved ones.

This Christmas, spending time with the family and arranging a brilliant Christmas get together couldn’t be easier thanks to these top tips from IKEA.

1. Laying the table is fun

When we think about the fun of Christmas we think about putting milk and cookies out for Rudolph and decorating the Christmas tree. Laying the table for Christmas lunch can be seen as a chore, but there are ways to turn it into a popular exercise for all.

Make it an occasion and allocate a job to each member of the family, including guests who might be staying for the holidays.

Jobs can include:

  • Writing and decorating place cards
  • Deciding where everyone will be seated and creating a hand-drawn seating plan
  • Scattering table decorations, using items found in the garden or beach to bring the outdoors in
  • Creating imaginative shapes for napkins using online how-to tutorials

2. Make the table the new couch

We often think about the Christmas table as a place we simply eat lunch and more often than not, as soon as the food has disappeared, guests will quickly retreat back to the comfort of the couch. For an extended Christmas lunch, where the fun and conversation continues long after the pavlova, let everyone know that the table is going to be the backdrop for their day.

As soon as guests arrive, have the children escort them to the table and show them the parts they’ve helped decorate. Not only will this encourage conversation around the table from the start but it will make the younger children feel more involved. This is likely to encourage the children to enjoy the experience more and therefore sit for longer, without being distracted.

3. Laughter and fun are the ingredients for success

The real secret to a successful lunch is laughter and fun. Create this for guests by handing out some party games as soon as they sit down. Christmas means different generations around the table and so finding games that appeal to everyone from age seven-to-97 is the key.

Christmas ‘I Spy’, a pre-prepared pass the Christmas parcel or ‘Who am I?’ are always great options. Have a few options prepared, this will allow you to hand over the role of chief fun maker to a family member whilst you focus on the food.

4. Keep everyone talking

After a starter and a main course, it’s easy for guests to enter into a food coma and for the conversation to begin to dwindle. Keep everyone talking by introducing a mid-lunch twist with a game of pre-prepared Christmas Bingo! Nominate a caller from the table and encourage everyone else to participate.

Not only will this buy time for dessert preparation but it will also reignite the room with a second burst of energy.

5. Encourage guests to linger

Add another element of fun and a reason to remain at the table by turning desert into a blind taste-test challenge. Bring out blindfolds and a desert selection and challenge the entire family to guess what each desert is. This is a great way to encourage the little ones to give Christmas pudding a try and also a great way to continue the fun, together.

By adding this final element of theatre, guests will feel as though they’re enjoying their lunch so much they won’t be in any hurry to get up and leave, meaning even more time to chat and play games.

IKEA wedding table styling challenge

I’m no stylist. I think we all know that…

But when Ikea Australia asked me to take part in its wedding table styling challenge, as a bride-to-be, I thought it sounded like a lot of fun! And it was.

ikeaThe challenge was to create any kind of wedding table setting using nothing but what you can buy in Ikea, apart from large ticket items like the table itself, for under $500. And above is the result, my very pink and floral dessert station. I know it isn’t very good but hey, you can’t take yourself too seriously! Everything there, edibles aside, is from Ikea, right down to the faux flowers (really not that bad, don’t you think?), the frames, the napkins, the table covering, all of it. Tempting as it was to get one of my many stylists friends to do it for me, I think you can probably tell I didn’t!
