Mrs Tablescape’s new art-inspired store is bringing joy to Sydney

A new concept store has opened its doors to Sydney art lovers, interior design enthusiasts and home entertaining aficionados alike, as the trend for lushly laden tables continues.

Carolyn Dorrian in her new Double Bay store

More than just a shop for stunning handmade tablewares, the Mrs Tablescape store in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is an interactive gallery of objets d’art: whimsical, practical, and daring. The retail space will further function as an arts hub with themed exhibitions, exclusive product releases and workshops in tablescaping, ceramics, linen stitching and more.

Never one to shy away from the limelight, Mrs Tablescape’s unapologetically maximalist approach equals a no-holds-barred approach when it comes to all things tablescaping. Founder Carolyn Dorrian lovingly curates every item from far flung corners of the globe. Not only is there an in-house ceramicist to hand make the wares, there’s also an in-house painter on the books.

“My philosophy is based on bringing beauty and joy into daily life,” says Carolyn, a lawyer of 11 years who hasn’t looked back since turning tablescaping into her passion (and second career) post-COVID. And what was an online-only store now has its own shopfront in Double Bay.

“I believe art has the most impact when it’s enjoyed in tangible ways – and there’s no better way to incorporate it than through the practice of tablescaping. You make memories around the table with your loved ones. Every moment is savoured with all your senses – touch, smell, sight, taste. The table is really the heart of the home and when we elevate it, we celebrate life itself.”

Designed and built by Mrs Tablescape herself with the help of her family, the concept store pays homage to Carolyn’s love of organic shapes and high art inspired by Parisian interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch.

Beginning with leading Dada and Surrealist artist John Cocteau, Mrs Tablescape will unveil a different artist and theme every month in store and release a limited set of hand painted tablewares to match the artist. On top of exhibiting general lifestyle art, Mrs Tablescape will be showcasing deconstructed fashion art plates dedicated to the latest and greatest fashion icons.

“We have an amazing lineup of artwork and artists in the wings,” says Carolyn. “Our monthly art exhibition will also feature many local up and coming artists. I’m very excited about the Beauty and the Beast themed exhibition that we have in the works! We want visitors to come in and experience the full spectrum of what we have to offer whether it’s enjoying some art or learning something new at a workshop. My hope is that Mrs Tablescape will become an active part of the arts and culture community for many years to come.”

New ceramics collection from Kip&Co x Robert Gordon

Kip&Co has launched its first ceramics collection in collaboration with the iconic Australian ceramicists Robert Gordon. The connection between the brands spans decades with the Kip&Co team having attended school with the Gordon children; the friendship was forged in a bushy country Victoria schoolyard in the 1990’s and has continued ever since.

“It was an idyllic upbringing in Berwick – surrounded by amazing Aussie bush and a truly creative close-knit community away from the rat race. It was a special, formative period for us all and I think if you look at where we’ve all ended up in our careers you can see the imprint of that way of life. We’ve continued to admire everything the Gordon’s have done and it’s a bloody delight to be working together now,” says Kip&Co’s Kate Heppell.

Kip&Co
The Kip&Co x Robert Gordon features lots of fabulous tableware options

The range came about because, like all of us, the Kip&Co crew are rather obsessed with ceramics at the moment. Kate herself has dabbled in making them over the years and says that those experiences have given her serious respect for the craftmanship and skill required in the pursuit.

“But, as is often the way, the bulk of ceramic tableware plays in the safe neutrals space so, naturally we were excited to bring a little bit of our signature playful prints to the category,” says Kate. And when it came to choosing a partner to help the brand realise its dream, Robert Gordon was a natural fit.

Kip&Co

The everyday dining collection includes stoneware plates, bowls, jugs and mugs; all of which are emblazoned with a series of maximalist inspired signature Kip&Co prints. “I’m mad on the plates and am very excited to get myself a big set. I can’t wait to use them during long lunches with friends where I can cook up a feast!” says Kate.

The bespoke vase collection is rather special too with only ten of each design available. “Each vase is designed by Kip&Co and hand painted by Kate Gordon, who has been been glazing pottery in her family business for over 30 years. The pouring process alone for these incredible vases takes an entire day and is done by hand at the Robert Gordon studio in Melbourne,” says Kate of the vases that are signed and numbered.

“We’ve continued to admire everything the Gordon’s have done and it’s a bloody delight to be working together now!”

Foodie Friday: Fluffy miso caramel dumplings & icecream

Foodie Friday

Maxwell & Williams partnered with celebrity chef Sara Oteri on this recipe, served on their White Basics collection.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Dumplings
30g butter
1 cup self-raising flour
1/3 cup milk

Caramel sauce
2 cups hot water
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp honey
1 tsp yellow miso
45g butter

Method

Combine all the sauce ingredients into a medium sized saucepan and simmer on a low heat until caramel slightly deepens in colour.

Rub butter into the flour until it resembles the texture of fine breadcrumbs. Slowly incorporate the milk until a dough forms. Alternatively, you can do this all in a food processor.

Roll the dough into walnut-to-golfball sized balls and place a few at a time into the simmering sauce.
Cook for 10-to-15 minutes before scooping each out, gently.

For a thicker sauce, keep on the heat a little longer before straining through a fine sieve and pouring over the dumplings.

Serve with vanilla bean ice-cream.

Our favourite handmade Aussie ceramics

I’ve done a lot of homewares roundups in my time, but very few have been this tricky. There are just too many amazing ceramicists out there! This list could have been endless but here are some of my absolute favourites, all lovingly handmade right here in Australia.

Kaz: Mornington Peninsula artist Karen Morton is the maker behind Kaz. Creating both functional and non-functional pieces, her ceramics feature unexpected symbols, broad brushstrokes and wallpaper patterns.

Kaz

Takeawei: Fun, functional and hand-crafted, the pieces bring together a mix of organic shapes and textures with bright colours and a sense of humour. Each ware is designed to be used and is handmade in Torquay, Victoria.

Takeawei

Bridget Bodenham: Specialising in ceramic tableware, utensils, jewellery, planter pots and flower vases; the tones and textures of Bridget’s wares pay homage to her bush setting in country Victoria.

Bridget Bodenham

Leaf & Co: Inspired by nature from the curves of a wave to the lines of a landscape, all the ceramics give a nod to the environment. Working out of Mount Glorious (an hour from Brisbane), Leaf & Co is a family affair, designed by a mother and her two daughters.

Leaf & Co

Carla Dinnage: Offering a wide range of beautifully coloured ceramic bowls and wall hangings, each piece is individually handmade and hand designed in Melbourne. The wares features strong influences from Mexico, the Middle East and Europe.

Carla Dinnage

Vanessa Bean: Full of personality, owner Vanessa Holle turns everyday functional objects into figurative sculptures, with sweet hand painted faces. Made in Sydney, the pieces feature vibrant colours and decorative drawings.

Vanessa Bean

Daisy Cooper Ceramics: Handcrafted in Melbourne using traditional methods of pinching and coiling clay, the wares are natural and ergonomically shaped. Growing up in Scotland, Daisy is inspired by the wilderness, seen through her forms and colours.

Daisy Cooper Ceramics

Sophie Moran: With an aim to create minimal, handmade vessels that return significance and meaning to household objects, each piece can be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. Made in Melbourne from both porcelain and stoneware, the designs merge traditional and modern techniques.

Sophie Moran

La petite fabrique de Brunswick: Originally from France, but now living in Melbourne’s Brunswick, owner Lucille Sciallano specialises in slip cast ceramics. Producing bowls, cups, teapots and more, she creates patterns and drawings by using pigments to colour the porcelain.

Classic with a twist: Shaynna Blaze’s new tableware range

A couple of months ago we brought you the first collection of homewares by Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe. Today we can bring you the next instalment… and it’s only got better!

Featuring a curated collection of tableware, from cutlery and stoneware to vases and cheese boards, the wares are functional works of art. Versatility is key with textures of oak, marble, fine china and glass, plus tones of brass, copper, whites, blues and greys.

“Chinaware, cutlery, glass and platters all play a significant role in the gathering spaces of the home,” says Shaynna. “Whether you’re using these pieces for a dinner party for 12 – or curling up to breakfast in bed for one – I wanted to create a range that works perfectly whatever the occasion.”

The philosophy behind the tableware is classic with a twist – pieces that work in either a casual or formal environment, and can dress your table up or down. “When styling a dining area, the table is at the heart of things,” explains Shaynna. “I see table tops as a moving piece of artwork.”

With an extensive range it’s hard to pick a favourite but for Shaynna it’s the white and copper cutlery: “It’s very different, so eating with them makes each bite an experience and elevates it from the routine!”

Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe is available now in more than 50 Harris Scarfe stores across Australia, and will be avaliable online from today (Wednesday 25 October).

Royal Doulton’s colourful new ceramic tableware is super fresh

Royal Doulton has once again partnered with HemingwayDesign to produce a gorgeous, contemporary-looking range of ceramic plates, bowls and mugs in a striking combination of sorbet tones and bold citrus hues. A prominent UK design firm, HemingwayDesign was founded by Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway and the latest collaboration with Royal Doulton was designed for everyday use by their daughter Tilly, who has a strong affection for mid-century design. It’s a predilection that is plain to see in the collection.

Hemingway_LS_20

“We are thrilled to be continuing our successful partnership with Royal Doulton, once again combining our distinctive design aesthetic with the British brand’s iconic heritage. I’ve worked with Royal Doulton to design a new tableware collection with embossed textures and a complementary mix of bright and subdued colours, a contemporary aesthetic with a slight nod to mid-century design that can fit into every home,” says Tilly.

Available in white or grey, as singular pieces or in a 16-piece boxed set, the collection incorporates plates, cereal bowls, mugs and serving bowls. In addition, there are also plates, bowls and mugs in on-trend colours including yellow, pink dark and light grey too. We love the idea of mixing up the colours for an individual feel.

The range also boasts some gorgeous vessels – namely vases and jugs that we think would make fabulous gifts. We also love how the combination of embossed textures, sorbet tones, bold shapes and Scandinavian influences make the pieces perfect for styling up a vignette. They could almost pass as original mid-century heirlooms too.

Hemingway_LS_30

“As avid collectors of ceramics, we are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Royal Doulton. The new range of vases and jugs work brilliantly as stand-alone items but also beautifully complement our bowls, mugs and plates which boast similar textures and finishes,” says Tilly.

IKEA & Katie Eary’s out of this world homewares collection

To be frank, IKEA’s latest collection, GILTIG, is absolutely cray-cray. A unique collaboration with London-based menswear designer Katie Eary, the range of tableware and home textiles is guaranteed to turn up the senses.

PH131926

Full of gobsmacking patterns (I’m talking googly-eyed fish, blood-red brains and startled-looking cats), Katie herself will tell you her work is in your face, over the top and too much. But that’s just how she likes it. “I always make the reference to contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas. Their work has too much colour, is overtly sexual and there are dead animals everywhere. They turn everything upside down and leave you with a feeling of love or hate. That’s the feeling I want to emulate in my work.”

PH131929

PH132072

Limited edition, the GILTIG collection is the first in a series of collaborations with fashion designers – and a way for IKEA to explore new ways of thinking. While Katie had never designed home furnishings, as a print-based designer, who favours unique patterns and colour mixes – all made possible through digital printing, it seemed like a natural progression. “GILTIG was always going to be a print-based collection. The idea of creating something amazing on screen and knowing it’s going to look the same when you put it on a product is very appealing to someone like me. Digital print is photo real whereas 2D print is just so basic and boring. I want the colour to make the eyes hurt, that’s what I always say.”

PH131700

PH131668

Made up of plates, cups, bowls, lamp shades, cushion covers, tea towels, aprons and tote bags (and a great deal more), Katie believes a good home is not about having lots of flashy things, but about having things that complement your personality. “A decade or so ago, you could get an idea about who a person was from their CDs or books. Now it seems that, as far as the home goes, furniture and personal bits and pieces are the last things left that show your true identity. When you walk into a home, it’s like you’re walking into that person’s brain.”

PH132073

With a collection that’s based on a mad dinner party with fish that jump off the plates, bowls that look you in the eye and cups brimming with cats, it’s sure to make your home stand out from the rest.

Available from April.

The Cutlery Commission has landed in Australia and we love it!

When Laurie Creasy received a personalised, hand-stamped cake slice as a wedding present in 2014, she instantly fell in love with the hand crafted gift. Made by The Cutlery Commission, based out of the Cotswolds in England, Laurie began sending a teaspoon/cake fork/Pimm’s stirrer to anyone celebrating anything!

Memories_not_calories

So after a discussion with her business partner Jo Coles, Laurie approached The Cutlery Commission founder Katie Dobson and asked if they could be the Australian distributor. And luckily, she said yes!

The Cutlery Commission 1

“Jo and myself began our own boutique PR agency in 2009,” explains Laurie. “Fast forward six years and we are excited to have taken a leap of faith once more with our latest business venture — The Cutlery Commission Australia. We have a talented group of local ‘Spoonettes’ hammer ready, who carefully hand-stamp each letter and number delicately into place.”

The Cutlery Commission -4

As the original creators of personalised, hand-stamped silver-plated cutlery, The Cutlery Commission provides unique gifting for all occasions. With the opportunity to completely tailor a greeting across a premium range of utensils, The Cutlery Commission creates bespoke keepsakes that impart an extra special affection on moments of celebration.

The Cutlery Commission -7

Selling everything from coffee and teaspoons to cheese knives, cocktail stirrers and cake slices, customers can be inspired by a large array of gift ideas, message options and design choices on their website and social media. “Our popular pre-stamped products or personalised messages that are custom-made are ordered online and then hand-stamped one letter at a time in our studio. Polished up, each commission arrives ‘gift ready’ with a dainty teaspoon charm attached with organza ribbon, wrapped in tissue paper.”

The Cutlery Commission -1

A huge advocate for shopping local, having worked with many local businesses through her PR agency, Laurie was extra keen to launch the Australian counterpart to The Cutlery Commission so as to support small businesses selling something unique. “I think for me, I always like to give a gift that makes people say ‘Ahh!’ when they open it, something really special that the recipient knows has required a little bit of thought and feeling. Jo and I are both big on shopping local so it is a business model that sits well with us from a personal value perspective.”

Food blogger launches coastal tableware collection

Running the successful food blog, My Beach Kitchen, for Kelly Lowdon it seemed like a challenging but natural progression to develop her own tableware range.

My Beach Kitchen 1

Wanting to design products that were versatile, functional and understated, Kelly’s biggest goal was to create a collection that encouraged people to cook and share food with their friends and family. “When you share food, you share love, friendship and kindness,” explains Kelly. “When I cook, no matter what or who it is for, it always comes back to that.”

My Beach Kitchen

My Beach Kitchen 2

Living with her husband and three kids in the beach town of Jan Juc, her coastal lifestyle and country Victoria upbringing is reflected in the range of enamel serving ware and wooden chopping boards and spoons. Designed locally in Torquay, the products come in a range of coastal inspired colours.

2 My Beach Kitchen

The process of creating and launching the range has come with many lessons for first-time designer Kelly. “Be patient, don’t rush and take time every now and then to step back and look at where you are at, where you have come from and if you are headed in the right direction. You need to start every week with some type of plan, but you also need to be flexible, because having a family means every week is very unpredictable!”

Kelly

A far cry from where she thought her career was heading — she previously worked as a marine guide in Queensland — Kelly always knew creating amazing food to be enjoyed by friends and family was where her passion lay. Loving that she can spend her days with her young family, whilst exploring her desire to create inspiring food and homewares, she can’t wait to see where this road takes her.
