Locally made, European inspired homewares: Retro Print Revival

It all started with a handmade lampshade for a friend and then another, followed by another. For a while, Tamara Watts was a visual merchandiser by day and a lamp designer by night. But before long, she left her role at Country Road and in 2009, started Retro Print Revival, a homewares brand that specialises in European Modernist-inspired lamps, planters and vases.

European Modernism includes a wide range of experimental trends that characterised the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Tamara’s love for it is evident in her bold and fun creations, evoking the peace, love and music of Mid Century Modernism. “It’s the simple lines, the warm timber, the craftsmanship, and most importantly the beauty and function at the same time,” Tamara says.

This love is also reflected in Tamara’s own personal aesthetic and home. “For those that know me, they know that I live and breathe the style of my brand. It’s not about a trend for me, I have always (and hopefully will always) appreciate the bygone era of the 60s-to-80s. My own home is like stepping back into a time-warp, filled with Mid Century furniture and decor, exposed brick, slate floors, wall hangings, and lots of warm, earthy tones.”

Her creative process is similarly inspired by the things she sees and observes as a freelance stylist and visual merchandiser, constantly saving images of all sorts of objects, textures, images of interiors and colour combinations. Her mix of materials and textures result in simple and beautiful creations that emphasises her pure design approach. “I just design what I love – I’m grateful that other people love it too.”

Supporting Australian production and local manufacturers remains at the heart of Retro Print Revival’s ethos. Since day one, using local suppliers has been at the forefront of Tamara’s business. “Not only does it minimise our environmental impact, but it supports other local creators and businesses. It means the people that buy a RPR product can know they are not just supporting me, but seven other Australian businesses. The pieces are of high quality. I look over every single component and make sure it’s made to the best standard, ensuring they’ll be in homes for many years to come.”

With the explosive popularity of houseplants recently, Tamara says there’s also been an increased demand for planters “Beyond the health benefits of indoor plants, such as reducing stress, and filtering air, it’s refreshing having plants in your home. You can’t go past a great planter housing your favourite houseplant, it’s like giving them their own home.”

And when it comes to lamps, she says their role as decor in homes is sometimes overlooked, with the use and placement of your lighting playing a lead role in how you feel. “I’m a big fan of moving lamps around from time to time to create a whole new look. Remember lamps aren’t just there to look pretty, they’re another light source and can add a sense of warmth and ambience with the flick of a switch.”

Retro Print Revival release a new range yearly, generally consisting of one or two lamp designs, as well as new fabrics and planters. This year, Tamara is exploring the design of a pendant light but her current favourite piece, the Athena lamp, was released last year and named after her third niece! “I love the unique shape and earthy glazes. I had an accidental surprise recently where my ceramicist glazed some in black by accident, and they have proven to be really popular, so I will now be keeping the Athenas in matte black as part of the range.”

Classic with a twist: Shaynna Blaze’s new tableware range

A couple of months ago we brought you the first collection of homewares by Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe. Today we can bring you the next instalment… and it’s only got better!

Featuring a curated collection of tableware, from cutlery and stoneware to vases and cheese boards, the wares are functional works of art. Versatility is key with textures of oak, marble, fine china and glass, plus tones of brass, copper, whites, blues and greys.

“Chinaware, cutlery, glass and platters all play a significant role in the gathering spaces of the home,” says Shaynna. “Whether you’re using these pieces for a dinner party for 12 – or curling up to breakfast in bed for one – I wanted to create a range that works perfectly whatever the occasion.”

The philosophy behind the tableware is classic with a twist – pieces that work in either a casual or formal environment, and can dress your table up or down. “When styling a dining area, the table is at the heart of things,” explains Shaynna. “I see table tops as a moving piece of artwork.”

With an extensive range it’s hard to pick a favourite but for Shaynna it’s the white and copper cutlery: “It’s very different, so eating with them makes each bite an experience and elevates it from the routine!”

Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe is available now in more than 50 Harris Scarfe stores across Australia, and will be avaliable online from today (Wednesday 25 October).

The latest ways to display your greenery at home

There’s no doubt that greenery is a very cool trend right now – PANTONE did make it the colour of the year, didn’t they? However, the chic style goes so much further than just a swatch, with vases and planters hosting gorgeous green plants the coolest addition to any room.

It’s not all about aesthetics though, indoor plants have health benefits too – they use your expelled carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen, have been proven to sharpen focus and reduce airborne dust levels.

Planning your indoor garden yet? Well, make sure you’ve got the best in indoor plant style by checking out some of the best in planters and vases, brought to you by Life Instyle. The boutique trade fair is happening next month, with some of the country’s coolest creatives and designers showcasing their latest wares. The show is all about creative excellence and innovative style, so take a cue from these examples on what your indoors should be looking like:

Petite planters from Hammered Leatherworks

These porcelain and leather hanging planters from Hammered Leatherworks come in a variety of colours, so you’ll know they’ll work with whatever aesthetic you’re after.

Brass vases from Urban Eden

Urban Eden’s main aim is to get people into gardening and reconnected with nature – these brass vases look to do exactly that!

Teardrop vase from Stix & Flora

Stix & Flora is a family business run by mum Jules and daughter Em – these teardrop vases are bestsellers, and we can see why!

Glass vase by Koa by Kaitlin

Each of Koa’s pieces are all ethically hand carved, making your vase a unique place to host your greens.

Botanica

Expressing their appreciation for nature through industrial design, Lesley Williams and Simon Zappia established Botanica, a collection of objects that highlight both the tiny and delicate to the large and wondrous of the plant world. Inspired by vivariums and Wardian cases of the 1800s, their products deliver a tribute to nature’s most delicate botanical offerings with a contemporary feel. This year’s product collection includes: Sanctuary S, Sanctuary M (in Rainforest, Temperate and Arid) and the newly released Biodome.

Millie Archer offering aspirational homewares for under $100

Following 18 months of research Laura O’Keeffe and her partner Paul Jager pooled together their skills in business and marketing and their love of design to create beautiful, minimalist wares under their business, Millie Archer.

millie archer5

All with a vintage, scandi edge, the products are aspirational in style yet affordable, with pricing kept to under $100. “Every design is and will only be produced in limited production runs and all our pieces are modestly priced,” explains Laura. “A combination of uniquely designed feature pieces as well as tailored catalogue items form each collection. We hope the introduction of a single Millie Archer design will assist in changing the look and feel of every home or office.”

millie archer4

Designing cushions, throws, baskets, wall prints, drinkware (mugs and glasses), jugs, vases, terrariums, hanging planters and coasters, you can expect to find a new collection on the website with the turn of each season. Launching their first range just a few short months ago, it includes four distinct styles, Laura’s favourite being the Bear + Flamingo design, which involved a collaboration with Swedish artist Linda Otton. “After discovering Linda on Instagram in 2014 I immediately fell in love with her style and the ethereal aesthetic that came through her watercolours and composition. The Bear + Flamingo illustrations within the pieces in this collection were created exclusively for Millie Archer. Applied across cushions, mugs, coasters and on fine art wall prints, their simple nature and soft, feminine style add a scandi touch to the room.”

millie archer3

millie archer

Also with a Geometric, Metallic and Arrow range, their debut collection is extremely expansive, but that doesn’t mean there’s not more designs in the works. “We’ll be releasing new pieces or a new range every four months or so and have our designs in place for the next few drops,” explains Laura. “This summer you’ll see citrus really come to the forefront of Millie Archer. We love lemons and lemon colouring, it just makes you feel all summery! We’re also investigating some pretty special glassware but that’s in the very early research and development phase.”

millie archer1

With the name Millie Archer signifying the coming together of the couple’s two favourite names, for them, it was very much like naming a child — proving just how much love they’ve put into the business. “Each design is given as much care and attention as we could possibly dedicate,” says Laura. “We hope you fall in love with them as much as we have.”

Our pick of the season’s best vases

Flowers can truly transform an interior, but when they’re placed in an ordinary, old or just plain ugly vase, well it can be a huge waste of money and nature! Here are our favourite seven vases, which are easily as beautiful as the flowers you will put in them.

Made from a concrete base with a wire frame, the unique Ghost Concrete Vase ($49) from Zakkia may not be the most practical. But what it lacks in functionality it makes up for in beauty!

ghost vase zaakia

I’m a big fan of the geometric vases from Art Club Concept and actually own one myself. Beautiful — with or without flowers –the limited release Daybreak Vase ($59.95) is made from hand painted ceramic and textured granite.

Nothing can beat the beauty of Dinosaur Designs’ resin homewares, and I am particularly in love with The Resin Slate Vase in Black & Snow Swirl ($170). Handmade in Australia, each piece is unique with no colours or swirls ever exactly the same.

Showing Scandi design at its best the Scanda Marble & Leather Vase (available in black and white) is both contemporary and functional. Designed by Curious Grace, prices start from $95.curious graceAvailable from Country Road for $129, the Bevel Copper Large Vase (middle) is minimal and contemporary. Both decorative and functional, cluster the different sizes and finishes together for a statement centrepiece.

The limited edition Vases with Gold Wings ($122) from Mari Bray consist of two little vases with handpainted faces, carved eyes and mouths, a vintage floral ceramic decal and wings painted in pure gold. However, that’s not the best part. Rather, the vases can be personalised with you and your partner’s face. Now how cute is that?!

On sale for $29.95 each, these Ceramic Wall Bud Vases from West Elm turn botanicals and flowers into works of art. Arrange several in a group to create a beautiful hanging garden.

Zakkia’s SS15 range blends Scandinavian and Aussie design

Zakkia is one homewares brand that is continuously stepping up their game. Starting off in 2012 selling decorative knobs, their Spring Summer 15 collection is leaps and bounds away from their humble beginnings.

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.52.26 am

With a range that includes hand blown glass vessels, water hyacinth baskets and versatile ceramic and brass objects, Zakkia have also expanded their iconic concrete collection to include 100% soy wax scented candles. “We worked with a local candle maker in the Southern Highlands and a local fragrance house to create these candles,” explains founder and Swede-turned-Sydneysider, Sara Lundgren. “After almost six years in Australia I was craving the scents of Sweden, so each custom scent blend resembles the four Swedish seasons – sommar (summer), host (autumn), vinter (winter) and vår (spring). I love the end result and the scents really do remind me of home!”

Zakkia 2015

All designed in Sydney and hand produced by small artisan communities around the world, Zakkia’s style is a fusion of their Scandinavian roots and their new home in Bondi. “This season we are still building on our Swedish heritage but we have also brought in a bit more of the coastal Bondi lifestyle, with the aqua coloured glass pieces and braided water hyacinth baskets. The new collection is still very much in keeping with our minimalist design ethos, which comes through in the simple designs and clean lines.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.54.56 am

Screen Shot 2015-10-02 at 8.51.48 am

With each piece carefully handmade from high quality materials, Zakkia have continued to work with the raw natural materials they love, such as concrete and brass. It is for that reason Sara is very excited about one of their other latest additions, their Ghost Vases. “Made from a concrete base with a wire frame, these vases are quite a unique shape. Each piece is created to have multiple uses, and they have been very well received by our stockists.”

Zakkia’s Spring Summer 15 collection is now available for pre-order, to be received in early November. Prices start at $19.

Florist to the stars Jeff Leatham on his lavish projects

As the artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris and the go-to florist to the stars, Jeff Leatham has come a long way from the boy who used to lock himself in his room so he didn’t have to mow the lawn!

Jeff Leatham Fleurology_Lifestyle 1

Falling head over heels for flowers in 1995, Jeff is often referred to as a contemporary artist, creating works of art, rather than simple floral displays. “I do see myself as an artist in the way I approach my designs and creations. I think you can create striking, living sculptures with flowers. They’re not static, they move and respond to light and other elements. And like art, floristry can evoke emotions, trigger memories and speak to the viewer.”

Tina Turner's wedding

Counting the likes of Cher, Tina Turner, Oprah and Kylie Minogue as his clients, he has a wealth of projects under his belt. So the challenge comes to name his most luxurious job: “One of the most lavish events would have to be Tina Turners’ wedding to her partner Erwin Bach in 2013. I wanted to create special areas throughout the gardens. So we had a huge red rose wall — homage to Tina’s red lips — that took 34 hours to install. We had to work overnight because there was a heat wave in Zürich at the time and we didn’t want the roses to wilt. It was magical.”

Jeff Leatham Fleurology Kylie_Lifestyle 3

Jeff has also created some truly unique displays at the extravagant Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. As the artistic director he is in charge of all the floral and sculptural arrangements, the most jaw-dropping being their annual Christmas display, where he designed red-mirrored polar bear sculptures, which he affectionately refers to as his “babies.”

Working to design and create sculptures has also led to Jeff’s latest collaboration, Fleurology by Jeff Leatham. Designed exclusively for Waterford Crystal, it comprises of three capsule collections of fine crystal vases and rose bowls. Inspired by Jeff’s provocative combination of shapes, angles and geometric precision, the pieces reimagine traditional floral arrangements. “I love to work and collaborate with high-end, luxe brands that understand and respect the design process and producing timeless pieces. Waterford Crystal embodies all of these things and together we’ve produced a sculptural and bold collection. I personally think that great floral design starts with the vase.”

Update your living/dining for Spring without breaking the bank

Sponsored by Freedom

We spoke to Freedom homewares buyer Korryn Bentley about the latest Spring trends and how to incorporate them into your home without breaking the bank.

Sunseeker Vignette Option

“There’s a really strong move toward all things pastel this Spring, we can’t get enough! But we’re also seeing some chalky hues in citrus tones with terracotta as a hero colour. This can be a really sophisticated colour palette when combined with metallic coppers which are really hot this season,” Korryn says.

In terms of bringing these trends into your home, Korryn suggests a simple, easy and fun way is with a collection of vessels or vases. “These new pieces can look great mixed back with some vintage pieces, don’t be afraid to mix and match. There’s no hard and fast rule, but try and keep it tonal. Most interior upholstery, fabric or leather are fairly neutral in colour, so a cluster of vessels in a palette of chalky hues can easily work in with this look.”

Vases

If you were going to invest in one large key piece from Freedom, Korryn recommends, without a doubt, the Manhattan sofa in Loft Ecru. “I love the oversized proportions, the sleek contemporary legs, not to mention the level of comfort is out of this world. I could easily spend my summer sprawled on that with a cocktail and good book. Bring it on!”

One tricky issue for many readers is making your open plan living and dining spaces work together. Korryn still suggests creating obvious living and dining zones to prevent the space becoming confusing. “The best way of doing this is with floor rugs, this really helps bring structure to your room and visually ties the whole space together. You can play with a pop of colour that’s repeated in the rug, it creates real harmony in an open plan, while defining the space.”

Bright Rugs

When it comes to making a statement when entertaining at home this Spring, Korryn loves a brightly dressed table with fresh flowers and colourful napery. “My dinnerware is all white, so I get to play with lots of interesting textures and patterns in napery and tend to incorporate jute string somehow, I love jute string!

“Spring is one of my favourite times of the year. I love fresh bed linen that’s been drying in the sun, throwing the windows open at home and pulling back my blockout curtains. Spring is all about sheer curtains on the windows and fresh flowers in every nook of the home for me, and that gentle scent of jasmine blowing through.”

Korryn’s top four updates from Freedom’s Spring range for under $50

  • Serena Vessel 23.5cm: The dusty hue with the graphic stripe, I just love this look.
  • Bukhara Cushion: Again the way those dusty, earthy tones play together with the stitching, it’s a tactile, textural gem.
  • Arrow Basket 46cm: Why should storage be dull? The Arrow basket is practical and pretty!
  • Zedd Cactus Orange 32cm: Somebody pass me a Margarita, these cactus pieces bring a fun Mexican feel to a space, sans the prickles.

Mexicana meets copper at Have You Met Miss Jones

There really is something for everyone in the latest range from Have You Met Miss Jones with several key trends covered off. “We have created this new collection from inspiration around the world,” says creative director Jen Sampson. “We always try and offer a diverse and global perspective to our ranges, taking cues from the simplest of materials like wood carving and clay pottery; artisanal handicrafts that are as old as time and applying these to today’s trends and colour palettes.

“The ability to create new and unique looks from across our portfolio of products is what gives the team here at HYMMJ the biggest thrill. We love pulling together existing pieces and adding chic new items, creating a whole updated story that is collected and curated, just like our customers do at home.”

Using the fun and colourful Mexican Fiesta as a leaping off point, they played with saturated reds, pinks and yellows. The Mexican look includes an Otomi and Aztec print series that have been popular and a new skull lamp which is flying off the shelves.

Then kinfolk trend sees earthy tones of wood, browns, green, faux bois, bone china and a new metal range of copper and enamel boxes. “The copper range is selling out as fast as we can re-stock it!”

Jen says they always like to have some kind of nautical presence in their ranges as it’s a key look within Australia and reflects our casual lifestyle. “This season, we have added a popular anchor vase and whale lamp which people are loving. We have played with new materials and developed a rope cage lamp that can be hung or knotted on a surface. It imbues a casual industrial luxe which is always trending.”
