Interview: DesignByThem celebrate 10 years of Aussie design

10 years ago, in their final semester of university, Sarah Gibson and Nick Karlovasitis began brainstorming an idea for a business. Studying industrial design they were surrounded by young furniture designers chasing representation from companies overseas. It was a tough slog! So they decided to create DesignByThem, a brand that promoted Australian design and provided a viable platform for designers.

Sarah and Nick

Designing furniture themselves and collaborating with a stellar cohort of Australian designers; as the brand have grown in size, so too have their products. “Initially we designed mainly smaller accessories – maybe because we were designing out of an apartment and couldn’t fit anything else,” explains Sarah. “But slowly, as we kept moving to bigger and bigger spaces our products have become bigger too. The Cabin range is sure proof of that!”

Cabin Booth
Cabin Armchair and Ottoman

Working from home for the business’ first few months, storage was at a premium, with the garage stocked full of prototypes. Time was spent designing and raising awareness, so that DesignByThem could reach their goal of supporting fellow designers. “The scale of our collection is really what we’ve focused on over the years,” says Sarah. “Development started slowly and sped up as we surrounded ourselves with a great network of talented designers, manufacturers and staff.”

Bow Chair

With some 70 designs in their collection, featuring the work of Aussie talents like Stefan Lie, Trent Jansen, Tommy Cehak and many more, DesignByThem creates products that are consistent and true to their design ethos. “Rather than seeking to stand out we seek to be a brand with longevity,” explains Sarah. “Hopefully with products that are original and timeless, although this is a very hard thing to do. We plan to be around for a long time, and hope our considered approach is respected in the long term too.”

Baker Table and Butter Stools

Their broad range makes it’s hard to pick a favourite, but for Sarah, it’s the Butter Stool and Cabin Lounge: “For its playfulness, comfort and flexibility.” While for Nick, it’s the Piper Chair and the TomTom Letterbox (which Jen has and adores!): “I love the way people love this product, it’s endearing to see people’s reactions to it. This was also our first collaboration, with designer Tommy Cehak, who came up with the concept of people wanting to represent their style at the front gate.”

Now gaining traction overseas, particularly in the US, DesignByThem has some exciting prospects for the next 10 years and beyond. “We’ve seen the business move gradually to the overseas market so we’re excited to see where this takes us,” says Sarah. “We’ve also got some exciting new collections and collaborations happening early next year and plan on continuing the current momentum of designs and ideas.”

Shaynna Blaze’s guide to styling your table this Christmas

I love a dinner party, but if I’m honest, plans for a stylish spread quickly go out the window; especially when friends are on their way and you haven’t even started cooking. But not this festive season! This summer I’m going to create a feast for the stomach and the eyes… with Shaynna Blaze‘s help that is. Check out her top tips for styling a festive platter and the perfect tabletop.

Shaynna

How to style a festive platter

The more food, the better: A simple block of cheese and some dip and crackers just doesn’t cut it these days. Select a few different types of cheeses and layer with nuts, olives and fresh berries, and use dried fruits to fill all the gaps and cover any empty board space – a sumptuous smorgasBOARD!

Build from a perfect base: Choose a beautiful timber board or marble tray to serve, and pair with cheese knives and serving tools that follow the same aesthetic so it doesn’t overwhelm the food.

Shaynna Blaze for Harris Scarfe Eden 2pc Marble Board, $79.95

Use colour: Juicy strawberries,  green grapes and pomegranates not only taste good but visually make your platter an enticing feast

Balance: Start with the biggest items i.e. cheese, dips, bowls of olives etc. and build around this. Play around with different angles and different heights for your meat, cheese and crackers. It gives an extra dimension to the spread!

Variety is key: A platter should have a variety of textures, colours and tastes. Be mindful of this when selecting your food and don’t be afraid to pile it high with cheese, fruit, meats and pickled vegetables as a mouth-watering assortment of perfection.

Don’t forget the wine: Stemless wine glasses are an alternative to having lots of height on your table, use them on their own or mixed with stemmed glasses to give variation to your table.

How to style the perfect tabletop

1. Invest in a few core pieces like cutlery, wine glasses and hurricane lamps or vases to dress up your celebrations in the lead-up to Christmas.

2. Adding elegant cutlery to your dining table has the same impact as adding beautiful earrings to a little black dress.

3. When setting the table for dinner parties, keep your centrepiece low so sight lines aren’t obstructed and the conversation can flow.

4. To achieve a formal feel with your dining table setting, stick to a single colour palette for your dinnerware and placemats.

5. Create a casual look that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner by styling simple timber accessories with grey chinaware.

Locally crafted furniture you can pass down for generations

After an impressive international career working for well-known furniture companies and architecture studios, Anne-Claire Petre decided to finally bring her sketchbooks to life, creating her own range of eco-friendly, locally crafted furniture.

anaca studio 2

Offered under her brand anaca studio, Anne-Claire design furniture and accessories using sustainable timbers, materials and finishes, each made to order in her Melbourne workshop. Currently focusing on smaller items that fit easily into all interiors, her pieces are practical, beautiful and most importantly, long-lasting. “anaca studio is proud to create inspiring furniture that is built to last,” explains Anne-Claire. “Adding to landfill is not our aim, not in business and not in life. We build finely crafted furniture that has integrity, that you would be proud to own and pass on to the next generation as our parents and grandparents did.”

anaca studio 4

With an individual contemporary style, the lines are simple and minimalist with a touch of Japanese-cross-Danish inspiration — all mixed with Anne-Claire’s French background! “I like to think the products have their own personality, some a bit fun and quirky, some a little more serious. In the anaca studio family portrait there’s not a dodgy haircut or novelty jumper in sight, just sleek lines and contemporary finishes.”

anaca studio

Primarily using timber, Anne-Claire’s favourite pieces see timber mixed with steel. “I love the quality, texture and warmth that timber offers and enjoy mixing and contrasting this with the cold hard metal element. I am using a powdercoat finish on the steel for its environmental properties and also because it can offer a wide variety of colours.”

anaca studio 5

However that said, Anne-Claire isn’t fixated on just the one look, having some grand ideas for the future. “Next up, I want to work with more upholstery. I love playing with fabrics and leathers so it’s a natural progression for anaca.”

Carl Holder, creator of plywood furniture that’s anything but generic

After being commissioned to design a public art installation for his local village on the Sunshine Coast (which was so well-received it won one of the 2013 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards), Carl Holder was left with a pile of plywood off-cuts in his garage.

Carl Holder_Foreply-7

Letting it sit there for over a year, one day he decided to turn it into a piece for his own home; something everyday but not, useful yet playful and beyond the generic. Beginning with a dozen or so ideas, Carl developed three into pieces, all of which you can now see in his online Etsy shop: Foreply.

Thingamabob
Thingamabob

Creating pieces that are sculptural and functional, Carl makes all his furniture himself from local FSC certified plywood. “I’ve always loved classic plywood furniture,” explains Carl. “I love its sleek good looks, its functionality and the fact that it is portable and flexible and can fit into very small spaces. So plywood furniture is kind of the perfect furniture for the way we live now.”

Capsule
Capsule

Designing the Thingamabob, both a table and seat ideal for holding things like books and an iPad; the Plus and Minus stool/side tables, which can easily be pulled apart and hung on the wall or door to save space; and the Capsule shelf, a modern mantelpiece for neatly holding daily belongings away from the kids, the products have been so sought-after Carl even won the Esty Design Award for New Talent last year. “It’s still early days for Foreply but it has come along way since winning the New Talent Award. The resulting confidence and exposure the award has given me is invaluable. I went from having a few dozen shop visits a day to literally tens of thousands, with interest coming from all over the globe.”

With entries now open for this year’s Etsy Design Awards (Jen’s a judge!), Carl has some helpful tips for any potential applicants. “Preparing your submission is a great opportunity to refresh your shop; ensure photos of your work are of a high standard and your shop information is up-to-date and engaging. Tell your story and share your passion in a concise way.”

Carl Holder_Foreply-12

Having always loved making things, Carl got into the furniture business after his day job at an architecture and design firm saw him miss getting his “hands dirty.” With his 9-5 life seeing him rely heavily on 3D CAD modelling and prototyping to design, Carl’s loving being able to follow his passion for ethical furniture design and working with local sustainable materials.

Currently using all his spare time to come up with exciting new products and ideas, the Foreply Etsy shop is as a result taking a short break. “I hope to reopen the virtual doors again very soon, there are lots of ideas on the drawing board that I want to resolve and bring to market to extend the Foreply range. These (like the current items) consist of designs that are entirely made from plywood and others introduce new materials and a different design aesthetic.” Watch this space!

The Tabletop Project day 5: interior stylist Mr Jason Grant

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

“Christmas for me is a time to relax and unwind, I like to keep things simple and not too Christmassy,” says Jason Grant, who styled the Painted Rail Dining Table.  “My Christmas table setting is like my own decorating style: relaxed, laidback and casual.

“Of course it’s colourful too with a touch of my two favourites — nautical stripes and a little bit of nature. I love incorporating nature into all things that I do and have used blue spruce, a type of pine, as my touch of Christmas as decoration on the table (from Pearson’s Florist). I love that it’s classic Christmas with a twist. I love to customise and to use what I already have. I made these paper placemats from some artist paper and some spare paint and used irregular brush strokes to create the stripes in my favourite shade blue.

0026_DSC4338-2

“I love combining timber with strong bright colours I think this is a very Australian style and a Christmas table setting is the perfect time to add a pop. I have used the Hay Kaleido trays from Yellow Bungalow. Beeswax candles Queen B are perfect for the table. I love scented candles but not at the dinner table. Candles always add a little magic. I love to serve my favourite prawns, pavlova (which I love to decorate at the table with summer berries) ginger beer and champagne. Remember to leave room for these and not overcrowd your table . I like a layered but streamlined style table.

Jason, you're making us hungry!

The Tabletop Project day 1: Louella Tuckey

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

Louella Tuckey
Louella Tuckey

Louella Tuckey is co-owner and creative director of Mark Tuckey. She has used the Wrap Dining Table.

“We believe that Christmas is all about love,” she says. “Well actually, we think life is all about love so Christmas is just a great excuse to shout it out. We love to keep it low-key and pared back, pretty much what we state in our furniture. No fuss, no frills but enough detail to show the love.

0051_DSC4066-2final

“I’ve put together a super simple table that says ‘peace, love and a little bit of greenery’. I’m not good with tinsel, it makes me twitch, so I’ve opted for foliage instead. Delicate single flowers, green stems and leaves and a few nice woody bits.

0014_DSC4016-2

“Our daughters would love a bit of spangle so little white fairy lights on the twiggy silver birch tree pretty much do the trick. That’s Christmas for us here at Mark Tuckey.”
