5 of Australia’s best kitchens as voted by design professionals

The Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi) members and industry partners celebrated their 14th annual awards this month as an incredible lineup of kitchens and bathrooms vied for state and national titles. Here, we share the five kitchens deemed the best of the year.

KBDi NSW Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 and KBDi Australian Certified Designer of the Year 2022

Helen Baumann | Helen Baumann Design

Helen Baumann won the state title of KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 – NSW, along with the highly coveted national award of KBDi Australian Certified Designer of the Year 2022 with this stunning kitchen.

The Northern Beaches based designer was honoured to accept the industry group’s highest accolade. The Certified Designer Award acknowledges the entrant’s creative abilities and – with equal emphasis – their professional capacities in project documentation and specification. Here’s what the judges had to say about her winning entry:

“This exquisite design and its associated documentation deemed it a hands-down winner for the KBDi Certified category judging panel. The judges loved every element of this design. From the intelligent space planning to the elegant material and fitting selections, the panel were most impressed with the overall submission. They commended the designer on her faultless documentation and declared the entrant an exemplary representation of a KBDi Certified Designer.”

KBDi SA Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 and KBDi Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022

Stefan Vignogna | Stefan Vignogna Joinery & Interiors

One striking kitchen earned this Adelaide designer two impressive titles. Stefan Vignogna won the state and national titles with his exceptional entry. Here’s what the judging panel had to say about his kitchen design:

“This 1930s-character villa received a stunning transformation at the hands of a skilled designer. The reinvented space is both elegant and modern, meeting the client’s brief of a minimalistic style while still retaining respect for the heritage architecture. The panel commended Stefan on his innovative design solution, striking concept presentation and exceptionally high standard of documentation.”

KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 – Victoria

Naomi McLean | MJ Harris Group

This striking kitchen is expertly planned and classically styled, from the finishes to the fittings. The panel were most impressed with the superb design and meticulous documentation. They declared this designer a well-deserved winner in a hard-fought state competition.

KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 – Queensland

Hilary Ward | Urban Kitchens & Joinery

The designer overcame the challenges of a finished floor and fixed footprint to create a kitchen with an entirely new presence. The aesthetics of the space were well considered and balanced, and the documentation was clear, consistent and comprehensive.

KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2022 – Western Australia

Alysia Pekel | Western Cabinets

The designer delivered a winning submission with a striking material palette, an impressive list of fixtures and fittings and a carefully considered layout.

Benchtop installer

Having tons of space to work on is essential in the modern kitchen, so a benchtop specialist can install whatever surface is right for you, including budget laminate, timber, engineered or natural stone, amongst others.

Cabinetmaker

A cabinetmaker can help you get exactly what you want in terms of storage for your kitchen including a dedicated pantry, deep drawers and all the latest hardware like soft close drawers. Don’t forget to plan for that wine rack, a must for any kitchen!

Electrician

A sparkie is a must-have tradie for any kitchen project no matter the size. Besides obvious elements like lighting you are also going to need tons of powerpoints and all your integrated appliances wired and installed.

Plumber

Nowadays you’ll be installing not just your kitchen sink and tapware but your dishwasher and that fancy fridge with water/ice dispenser. A licensed plumber can make it all happen and more.

Splashback installer

Unless you like the look of raw concrete (some of you just may) a glass, tiled or stainless steel splashback are perhaps more practical options to frame your work area.

Tiler

Whether you are thinking of a snazzy tiled splashback or simply having tiles underfoot, an experienced tiler can lay these on walls or floors.

Dedicated kitchen builder

If you are doing a whole kitchen reno and want someone to take care of the whole project, then a dedicated kitchen builder is definitely for you. They can manage all the above trades and save you a heap of time trying to juggle it all. Expect to pay for the convenience though.

If you are installing a flat pack kitchen there are also dedicated services that will do just that for you.

Don’t forget, like any other job all the tradies who work on your kitchen project need to be licensed for the work they undertake.
