Four great tips for a warm and welcoming atmosphere this winter

While Australian winters might not be the bleakest, this is a period when staying snug in the comfort of one’s home seems more appealing than heading out. As we approach that time of the year when entertaining and socialising moves indoors, it’s time to think about making the home more welcoming, using interior design to fill it with warmth and cosiness, and making it a season to look forward to.

Here are a few tips from Great Dane to create a home atmosphere that is intimate and sparks joy this winter.

Play with different textures

Make spaces look and feel more homely and inviting by using furniture upholstered with leather, velvet, sheepskin, alpaca wool and other textural materials. Sofas and easy chairs with leather warm up to match body temperatures, while chairs with canvas and paper cord maximise comfort. Add a finishing touch with woolly throws, plush cushions and rugs that enhance cosiness.

Create intimacy and warmth with candles

Lighting candles makes the home feel more inviting, especially during the winter months. Candles add a soft glow to the space, making it appear more welcoming. Light candles in clusters of different heights, colours and shapes to add an element of interest, while also adjusting the level of brightness to suit the space.

Brighten the home with soft lighting

The lack of adequate sunlight in winter can be harsh, and most houses can feel gloomy during the day. Chandeliers and lamps that illuminate with a soft glow help make a space feel more inviting, which is ideal when most evenings will likely be spent indoors. Lamps with pleated paper and textile shades lend a soft and cosy light to living spaces, exuding much-needed warmth.

Connect with nature indoors

Celebrate the outdoors even while stuck inside by introducing greenery in the living areas. Flowers, garden cuttings and sculptural branches can be arranged beautifully in vases to introduce a touch of nature. Introducing natural elements also breathes life into the space, working as a source of inspiration especially if working from home will continue to be on the cards through winter.

From stadium sets to stylish Scandi furniture: IsoKing’s new range

Over a 48-hour period last March, major events staging company Stagekings lost 98% of their business due to restrictions on mass gatherings in the wake of COVID-19.

Their plan to survive the pandemic took them from manufacturing sets and stages for events like the Commonwealth Games, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and Ninja Warrior, to manufacturing furniture for Australia’s new stay-at-home workforce. After all, they already had the right team, tools, and equipment for the job. In one day, they designed a single desk, which became the key offering of their new brand, IsoKing.

Helmed by Jeremy Fleming and designed by Mick Jessop, IsoKing’s range proved an instant hit with customers and within four weeks, they had managed to sell 4,500 pieces of furniture, more than double their staff and save the company from the brink of financial ruin. One year on, their new venture is thriving, and they are ready to launch a complete range of home furniture.

“The IsoKing desk is what we thought would save us when COVID hit, or at least keep us busy, and it certainly did that,” says Jeremy. “With restrictions easing, the set design and production work for Stagekings has come back, but IsoKing saved us and turned into a really viable long-term business that we love working on.”

IsoKing At Home is their new, ultra-modern furniture range, initially launching with six unique pieces, all available online. The sleek Scandi style that drove their home office range continues in their full range of permanent home furniture. Think chic coffee tables, modular bookshelves, and striking bed bases.

“For us it’s always been about making something really special with that wow factor,” Jeremy explains. “Simplicity and function has always been key to our design, and this is really evident in the new IsoKing At Home range.”

Aside from the smart design and durability, part of IsoKing’s success has been the affordability of their range and the speed of delivery once purchased online. Plus, all pieces are made using sustainably sourced local birch ply, with easy, no-tools assembly.

Not forgetting their roots in the live entertainment industry, IsoKing donates a percentage of all furniture sold to Support Act’s COVID-19 Emergency Appeal. To date, they have raised $90,000 for music industry workers affected by the pandemic.

Designstuff open Melbourne store due to customer demand

In an environment of declining retail figures, we’ll admit we were pretty surprised to hear that the Scandi online homewares and furniture purveyor Designstuff has made the move to bricks and mortar. Opening its doors last month in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, the move was (rather interestingly) in response to consumer demand.

Designstuff showroom

“To be completely honest, it came down to continuous customer feedback. We were inundated with requests to see a large number of our products in the flesh. Much of what we sell relies strongly on a tactile connection between the customer and the product. It’s difficult to describe how smooth the leather is on a MENU Afteroom lounge chair for example, but to feel the quality in person is an otherworldly experience,” says Designstuff owner Christina Fedders.

And ethereal it is – the store provides a truly immersive Designstuff experience with design elements such as marble surfaces, brass tapware and gorgeous bathroom tiles all part of the glorious mix.

Designstuff showroom

“The showroom remains true to the Designstuff aesthetic by utilising a considered palette of soothing colours, natural materials, and plenty of sunlight. In collaboration with interior designer Angela Harry, we’ve worked hard to create a space that blends both retail and design, with a combination of statement furniture, accessories and top selling pieces on display,” says Christina.

Designstuff showroom
I don’t know where to look first – thank goodness I don’t live in Melbourne!

Originally from Denmark, Christina worked as a fashion buyer before her sideways step into homewares and furniture in 2012 which has seen her build an enviable line-up of brands since. The mix of Australian and international brands on offer include Menu, Kristina Dam, Ferm Living, Muuto, Middle of Nowhere Melbourne, Oliver Furniture, By Wirth and Cam Cam Copenhagen among others.

Designstuff showroom
Christina in the showroom

“We like to focus on minimalist objects, furniture, and decor items that instil a sense of elegance and beauty to the space in which they’re displayed. Our colour palette is muted, but not cold, with a focus on rich textures. We surround ourselves with pieces featuring clean lines and intriguing silhouettes,” says Christina.

Designstuff showroom

Ultimately, Christina believes in her new venture because it offers the consumer something that a digital experience digital simply can’t. “I suppose it’s all about the experience. You can’t smell a candle online or feel the grain of a timber dining table through an iPhone, but you can in a bricks and mortar store. There’s the in-person customer service side too – we’re a friendly bunch and love helping and providing advice wherever we can.”

Scandinavian style: Doors integral say Norsu Interiors

It’s not something we tend to think much about but a beautiful door can be just the finishing touch a room needs say Scandi interior decorator and renovators Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier, of Norsu Interiors. “You should be able to tell a lot about a space by its doors. They’re the first thing you see when you enter a room and, if closed, the last thing you see when you leave. If your room has a design story, then the doors are its cover and in this case, you should definitely be able to judge a book by its cover,” says Nat who carried out a beautiful renovation her 1920’s Melbourne bungalow recently.

Kristy's elegant bathroom door
Nat used Corinthian doors (Balmoral PBAL 2) throughout her home

Create a grand entrance
“One of the best things I did when renovating my home was to open up the hallway. The Scandi aesthetic is open and full of light, so a small corridor just wasn’t going to work. This new space created the opportunity to make a big statement with my doors,” says Nat of her double entrance front doors, painted in Dulux Vivid White.

norsuHOME front door
Nat’s double entrance front doors are Corinthian Classic PCL 4

“Simple elegance is key to the trend, so making a statement with your choice of doors relies on the detail. The deep carved vertical panel motifs add texture and shadow without being too dramatic,” says Nat who finished the pair of doors with Buster and Punch handles. “I set them on a background of Dulux Tranquil Retreat painted walls that helps them really stand out,” says Nat.

Keep the look consistent
“Beautiful interiors rely on having a strong design story that is executed consistently throughout your home. This ensures that the eyes can wander calmly from space to space without any unexpected surprises,” says Nat who says that interior doors should complement exterior ones. “A good trick for doing this well in a Scandi home is to slightly pare back the motifs of the front door with a simpler profile inside,” says Nat who selected brass interior door hardware too. “That material choice was picked out in fittings and furnishings including our tap ware and lighting,” says Nat further emphasising the importance of consistency in design.

Door to door design
“If we think of the door as the cover of your design story, then it follows that you should ensure it is represented in your space. Door frames, picture rails and skirting boards all provide opportunities to add more texture to the home through the use of carved and embossed profiles,” says Nat who used mouldings throughout the house alongside soft grey and pink paint colours on the walls for subtle contrast.

The doors are complemented by skirtings and architraves

“While getting the Scandi style goes beyond door choice, they are a great place to start thinking about how you are going to construct your vision and some of the core elements that are going to define it. Whether you’re going for the original 1950’s aesthetic, a more modern interpretation, or an entirely bespoke twist on the design, make sure your home opens the door to your personal Scandi style.”

Win a gorgeous Scandi-industrial console from Curious Grace!

Australian furniture and homewares purveyor Curious Grace has just added the super stylish Industrial M furniture range to their line-up of highly covetable goods. “It is the marriage of Miss Scandi and Mr Industrial, the yin and yang of our favourite design types here in Australia. We call it Scandi Industrial and the label has a warehouse vibe about it for easy, relaxed, Australian living,” says Curious Grace co-founder and buyer Anna Curnuck.

Industrial M coffee table in graphite, $839

As the name suggests, the furniture’s styling is primarily industrial in feel and the pieces feature natural oak paired with powdercoated metal in either white or graphite. “The collection offers great unpretentious design, extremely high quality and, importantly, affordability. Constructed of solid oak with steel legs and a powdercoat finish, it’s designed to be used and to last, not just to look cute and be disposed of,” says Anna. We like the sound of that!

Industrial M TV unit 150 in white, $1275

The range includes dining tables, coffee tables, bar tables, dining chairs, bar stools, bench seats, sideboards, TV units and consoles and, while you can peruse the range online, it’s also on display at the Curious Grace showrooms in Sydney and Melbourne.

Industrial M Extension dining table, $2449

“My favourite pieces are the console, sideboard and the extension table. I love the fact that the grain of the timber extensions goes the opposite way to the main table length – it’s just a little rebellious, the way we like it,” says Anna of the stylish, extendable dining table.

Industrial M bar table and stools

And given the simple colour palette, the range really lends itself to mix and match styling too. “Pairing a black table with white and black chairs looks great – very monochromatic and urban. Mixing up the chairs and a bench seat also looks great. You can also make it your own by styling it with a mix of what you already have,” says Anna.

Industrial M sideboard in graphite, $2780

To celebrate the launch of the range, we have one of the fabulous Industrial M consoles available to win in your choice of either white or graphite. Valued at $985, the versatile furniture item makes for a fabulous prize! Just complete the form below by 6pm on Friday 17 March 2017 for your chance. Open to Australian residents only.

Reno Addict’s Lauren Ellis shares her Christmas table setting

With ice-cold winters, it’s little surprise that Scandinavians know how to create swoon-worthy interiors for Christmas – and the wonderful news is the crisp, minimalistic look is easy to replicate!

I already had most of the decorations at home, and managed to pull this Scandi-inspired table setting together for under $100. So, with Christmas now just an exciting few weeks away, here’s a peek at how my family will be dining this Christmas, and a few tips to help you achieve the look at home.

Keep it elegant and understated, by opting for a monochrome palette. Group decorations in uneven numbers and add touches of gold or silver for a festive touch.

Ditch the tinsel and add a little sparkle with gold ribbon, copper twinkle lights and candleholders.

Make your guests feel extra special, with personalised name tags and plates wrapped up like presents.

Skip the iron and crumple your linen to add texture to your table setting.

A handmade pine wreath makes a beautiful statement, as does the greenery on the table.

Life after Block: Caro & Kingi’s real reno, part 2: the style

By Caroline Tahana

Industrial but with a hint of Hamptons. How can we make this work?!

When it comes to our own home renovations the first question a lot of people have asked us is will the famous “Scandustrial” style be making an appearance in our own home? Will we have a graffiti bath? Well the answer is yes. And no!

IMG_2342

Kingi loves the industrial style and so do I, but I’m also draw to the Hamptons style which I think will suit our 1970s home.

Industrial style can be sometimes come across as cold and hard but my aim is to work my magic and soften the whole feel and look of the house. I love the rawness of industrial but I love the warmth of that Hamptons/Country style brings to any family home.

Being married to a super talented man like Kingi you can be assured we will definitely be having his signature rendering work throughout our home, and why wouldn’t we? He’s amazing at what he does! (Insert proud wife here). Render doesn’t have to look hard or rough and what Kingi can do with Marrakesh and his Venetian plaster range will showcase in our home without a doubt.

IMG_2341

Our colour palette for the new home will consist of greys, blacks, whites, warm timber floors and of course rendering. I love the texture and feel faux leather furniture brings to any living area, but with children I also love how easy it is to clean!

We want to create a style which has neutral colours as its bones so we can change the décor as the trends change over the next 15 years or so without it costing too much! I’m in love with the soft Scandinavian pastels at the moment so our bedrooms will have the lavenders and violet colours without being too feminine. The industrial element will even this out and make our master bedroom perfect for the both of us.

IMG_2349

When we designed our Block apartment, we took in the location and what was around it. With the famous Chapel Street just 600m down the road, we knew we had to style it to suit the area. But now with our own home it’s a bit different. This will be our forever home; where we will grow our family, were the kids will go to school down the road. I won’t be making quick decisions with this renovation, that’s for sure! I think agreeing on the design and style of our own home might test us a little bit more than The Block did! Until next week…happy renovating!

Get excited about staying in with OZ Design’s new collections!

Sponsored by OZ Design Furniture

Even if you prefer sunnier weather, if there’s one really good thing about winter drawing in, it’s the chance to layer up and get cosy at home, changing your look for the new season. As if interiors addicts need a reason to change their décor though?!

The Coco 3-Seater
The Coco 3.5-Seater

OZ Design Furniture have some beautiful new furniture in store this week to take winter interiors to the next level! As our thoughts turn to hibernation weather, our homes become our favourite place to stay in and have friends over. OZ Design Furniture have created their new collections for living and dining spaces inspired by the latest interior trends so whether you’re curling up and reading a good book or entertaining, home is the most inviting place to be. As usual, the brand has its four key looks to choose from: abode, global, coastal and arthouse.

This season, OZ Abode showcases how to create a relaxed feel which is also sophisticated and functional. It’s all about warmth and layered texture. Muddied hues of on-trend blush and deep blues create the perfect backdrop to allow the layering of multiple finishes and colours. Moody pastels are showcased through matt accessorising, thick weaved cushions and a hint of a luxe with velvet touches (my favourite!). Metallic and marble accents (these trends aren’t going anywhere any time soon!) and floral and abstract patterns in textiles, keep the look fresh and playful.

The ever popular OZ Global collection reflects cultural inspiration from around the world, where the combination of soft brown leathers, raw timbers and tribal colours is key. The sleek lines and soft tan leather of the Boulevard sofa combined with the rustic finishes of the new Penfold range are reflective of this look. Natural hides thrown over surfaces heighten the warmth and depth, and slimline silhouettes are given volume with throws, graphic cushions and a hint of leather. Gold and copper accent homewares and botanicals add to the raw, earthy and organic vibe.

PENFOLD COFFEE AND SIDE

Don’t expect any cliches from the OZ Coast collection! This is the beach vibe reinvented! With natural textures and whitewash timbers still being at the heart of every coastal setting, this season OZ Design Furniture show a different take by styling neutral tones with hues of grey, complemented by muted pastels. The use of basket weaves, linen and thick knit wool throws creates a sense of warmth. Another distinct look comes from the use of rustic brown timbers with muted greens and over-scaled botanicals to create a tropical room setting. We love the light and bright Darby dining setting (pictured below).

OZ Arthouse is an eclectic blend of mid-century style with a contemporary edge. This season, the collection is about the balance of sleek lines and light timbers, complemented with accents of monochrome and pastel to create a modern and refined room. Check out the new Violet dining setting, Marilyn buffet and Porto desk. The Scandi influence is very obvious, and works perfectly with geometric, faceted, copper and organic finishes in accessories.

SHELF/LIFE release their first in-house product, the planter

After seven years on the retail side of good design, aesthetics, function and sustainability, SHELF/LIFE have released their first product, a range of Oslo hanging planters.

Shelf/Life planters styled by Vanessa Colyer Tay

Designed by husband and wife, Jess and Brendan Ibbett, the duo had always intended to feature their own work amongst other great independent makers and designers. “Now that we are solely online (they closed their Surry Hills shop in 2013) I have freed up time to focus on being creative again,” explains Jess. “With this renewed focus, the Oslo hanging planters are a new direction for SHELF/LIFE as we get back to what we enjoy most.”

Coming in three designs, the Oslo hanging planters (which retail for $135 each) are made from locally cut and powder-coated metal frames. With all metalwork completed by Brendan by hand, each piece is then passed onto Jess, who hand-assembles and finishes them with natural cotton rope, a hand-stamped/stitched leather tag and a hand-rolled brass ring.

Danish kids’ interior brand Done by Deer now in Australia

A new concept in children’s interiors is arriving in Australia that promises to broaden our idea of room coordinates. Done by Deer is founded on a strong belief that family life is about creating living spaces where kids’ gear no longer feels like a foreign invasion, but more like a natural part of the home. The extensive collection ranges from tableware to backpacks and toys to storage solutions and shelving, all coordinated in striking Scandinavian graphics and designs that spark the imagination of kids and satisfy the adults’ desire for function and style.

[contextly_sidebar id=”JsYlKOPMm0MSA1eZ2g1tOscyHBferkCq”]Done by Deer is brought to Australia by Danish by Design. Managing director Nigel Rose says: “We are so excited to finally have Done by Deer ready to launch. We have been speaking with them for several years, waiting for them to be ready to service overseas markets and now the time has come. The company is innovative and quality focused and is a great match to our other lines. We hope Australian parents will be as excited as us to see Done by Deer in the shops.”

The collection is based around six main animal characters. They appear in various forms throughout the range in the printed design or as actual soft toys. They all have their individual personalities with a view to the relationship between the characters and the child being very strong. The designs, fabrics, and the colours are carefully selected and combined to stimulate and develop children’s senses.

The range is loosely categorised into Eating, Playing and Living. Eating comprises all the melamine tableware, Playing is the category for soft toys and other play items and Living covers all storage boxes, shelving and other décor. Done by Deer offers lots of ideas and inspiration on how to combine life with kids with a love of beautiful design.

Alisa and Lysandra add furniture designer to their resume

They may have been known as The Block’s kitchen and bathroom queens, but twins Alisa and Lysandra Fraser are taking their design flair to another area of the home, creating a four piece bedroom suite exclusively for Forty Winks.

“The bedroom is such an integral part of our living and it’s the one room where we spend more than a third of our life resting, sleeping, rejuvenating and connecting,” explains Alisa. “So we were excited to design a bedroom range that marries flexibility, innovation, and our design style!”

Asta Suite - Bedside Table

Entitled Asta by Alisa and Lysandra, the Scandinavian inspired, Australian made suite features a queen bed, two bedside tables and a tallboy. Combining the rawness of timber mixed with the softness of fabric and the elegance of rose copper, the end result is contemporary, sophisticated and timeless.

“These days more than ever, bedrooms are getting updated every few years,” says Lysandra. “Taking that into consideration we were intentional with designing a bedroom suite that is dateless and incredibly flexible with complementing multiple interiors styles and trends. We offer customers the ability to choose between colours and the option to remove the rose copper element if they wish. The entire bedroom suite can also be adapted for a kids bedroom!”

Asta Suite - Tallboy

Veterans when it comes to designing and styling, Asta by Alisa and Lysandra now joins a long list of ventures; with the sisters continuing to run their successful styling business and online shop. So with all this experience, I would be remiss not to ask the newly anointed bedroom queens some decorating advice! “Creating a mood board is important,” explains Alisa. “Start with your hero pieces — your bed and side tables, and then one by one add other stylistic elements such as wall colour, rugs and accessories. Ideally, your bedroom should pass the ‘Sunday morning test’. It should entice you to stay in bed until midday, enjoying more than one cup of coffee, reading, listening to music and chilling out. Sure, if you have children that can be a far-fetched dream, but if they want to join you too, you know you have done a great job of styling your bedroom.”

Online shopping fix: Neutral Instinct

Inspired by the Leonardo Da Vinci quote: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” Amanda Tiernan left her job as a school teacher to open online boutique, Neutral Instinct.

Believing less is more, Amanda’s homewares have a distinct Scandinavian design edge. “Many of the products stocked by Neutral Instinct have a Scandi influence, which epitomises simplicity, minimalism and functionality,” explains Amanda. “I believe simple pieces can have a maximum effect when styled in the correct way.”

Sourcing her homewares from trade fairs and social media, Amanda wanted to create a store that not only stocked gorgeous products, but also gave customers inspiration on how to style them through beautiful images. “We recently completed our first photo shoot with the intention of creating a strong and unique visual for our brand,” says Amanda. “I wanted to stay true to our minimalist, Scandinavian inspired look so that customers who shared our love of this style could confidently log on to our website and find products on each page that they would want in their homes.”

Stocking brands such as By Lassen, Menu, Design House Stockholm, Karlsson, Mud Australia and Pony Rider, Amanda hopes to expand Neutral Instinct to include more designers and one day, even a bricks and mortar store. “Some of my short-term goals include adding a children’s category to the store and adding a few new designers to the range that I have long wished for. My long-term plans include opening a bricks and mortar store and offering a design service as well as a retail service. Lots to dream about!”
