Country house makeover designed and managed online

Located in the NSW Southern Highlands, this Burradoo manor home was purchased by a couple keen to use it as a weekend retreat and as the grandparent’s retirement home. Dana Tosolini of Concepts Interior Design transformed the home into a modern, elegant and functional abode that draws on the surrounding countryside for inspiration.

The owners wanted someone fresher and more inviting, and for it to feel more congruent with living in the Southern Highlands while servicing several generations. “Sara and Danny wanted an alternative home in the country that would suit theirs and the grandparents’ tastes. There also needed to be extra room for the kids to roam and a spare room for when guests stay over,” says Dana.

The kitchen went from a tired cream affair with dated flourishes to a much cleaner, more sophisticated space. “The existing kitchen colours, finishes and lighting were dated and the flow of the kitchen did not suit a homeowner who loves cooking,” says Dana who enlarged the island bench in response to the owner’s culinary predilections. “We doubled the bench size in width and created a comfy seating area to the side for coffee and conversation,” says Dana.

Nearby, the dining room features an antique style pendant light alongside Iksel’s beautiful ‘Italian Panoramic’ wallpaper mural. “It is dramatic yet classic and really suits the Southern Highlands area. It really sets the tone of the room,” says Dana, who came recommended by a friend who’d worked with her after finding her on Houzz.com.au.

What makes this project quite remarkable is that because it commenced shortly after lockdown restrictions set in, it was managed entirely online through the Houzz Pro tool. Dana was able to meet the homeowners safely and build rapport from a distance using a set of remote communication and online collaboration tools. For the entire length of the project, in person consultations were replaced with video meetings over Zoom. Incredibly, Dana didn’t even step foot in the house until delivery day!

Inside a creative’s colourful home in the Southern Highlands

It’s not every day that a home renovation is inspired by a rug but it happens to be the case for this Southern Highlands NSW home owned by Designer Rugs account manager Jonathon Murray and his husband Brian Hadnutt. “My client had a magnificent Designer Rugs rug in his living room, boasting fun patterns and colours such as ruby, orange, hot pink, black and white. This palette became the cornerstone for the living room colour palette and derivations of this palette were repeated throughout the home,” says interior designer Lynne Bradley who led the home’s gorgeous, colour-filled overhaul.

Previously rented out, and used occasionally as a holiday home, the couple made the decision to leave the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and make this home their permanent residence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the all-white abode was very liveable, the couple wanted to make the home more inspiring, colourful and useable before making a permanent move.

This bedroom features another fabulous rug!

“Generally, the home had great bones, but it was a bit vanilla,” says Lynne, who set about transforming the home with colour, texture, and floorplan changes. The renovation also had to complement the couple’s existing furniture and act as a backdrop to their art and antiques collections.

As for the main living area, a new gas fireplace acts as a focal point and welcome area for guests – Dulux Red Vine creates drama in the space. “There was no fireplace in this room, so we designed one with bench seating either side and under seat storage. The room is cosy yet stimulating, provides an attractive focal point from the kitchen and frames the garden beyond, beautifully,” says Lynne.

The living room’s statement rug inspired the home’s colour palette

The kitchen received a partial renovation – Lynne filled in the bar stool area with new shallow cupboards, replaced the tall storage with integrated appliances and replaced the kick boards and cabinetry hardware. A new Kelly Wearstler pendant light hangs above the nearby dining table and Dulux Red Vine features in that space too.

The bedrooms were overhauled with a warm mix of paint (Dulux Turkish Bath) and soft, patterned furnishings. The couple receive many visitors but often work from home too so the guest room acts as a study when required. The thoughtfully designed study nook was originally a built-in robe before Lynne modified it.

“The style of the home now is both dramatic and comfortable and while it has a strong colour palette it doesn’t dominate – rather it nurtures. This project was indeed a great joy to work on and the reason for this is that my clients trusted me and didn’t fight the process. My clients have become my dear friends for life!”

Influencer Abbie Mellé’s bedroom makeover with Pottery Barn

An experienced lifestyle photographer, Abbie Mellé has built an Instagram following of over 100k people who check in for her earthy, light-filled, chic country vibe. Having just made the move back from London to the photogenic New South Wales Southern Highlands, the Bowral-based influencer celebrated by giving her bedroom a makeover with some gorgeous Pottery Barn furniture and homewares.

“When envisaging styling my bedroom, I wanted to have items that gave a quiet peaceful feel to the space, without being too loud or showy. These pieces are perfect for creating such a room. I picked these particular pieces for their elegant simplicity and beautiful design, ” says Abbie whose stylish bucolic aesthetic makes her a perfect fit for the brand.

Natural fibres and muted tones are key to the look

As for her number one decorating tip, Abbie is a fan of keeping things simple and pared back while incorporating muted tones and plenty of soft texture. “I like to do this by adding in items I love, and then taking some away, regularly switching around elements to keep things interesting and varied.” A prominent feature in her Instagram feed, fresh foliage is a hallmark of the photographer’s work. “I always, always bring in fresh flowers and a beautiful pot plant,” says Abbie.

Abbie always features a pop of greenery

“I love how versatile Pottery Barn is, with the ability to search and buy from such a large variety of beautiful items, ranging from furniture to linens to kitchen utensils. And with so many pieces complementing each other as well, it makes decisions for room styling so much simpler,” says Abbie.

Stylish Bowral weekender where the furnishings are for sale

I love an old school holiday rental with mismatching nanna blankets as much as the next person and have stayed in many! But I’m also a sucker for something super stylish, unique and luxurious and, now I have a baby, I’m increasingly looking for self-catering options over hotels. House By Them is a charming weekend getaway which provides guests with a unique opportunity to stay amongst innovative art and design while enjoying all that the Southern Highlands of NSW has to offer.

lounge_1_cmy

Located in Bowral, House By Them has been brought to life by Anna Byng and Ursula Armstrong, owners of Made By Others art and design store in nearby Moss Vale. The three-bedroom weatherboard cottage is not just a place to stay but is essentially an extension of the store’s philosophy to showcase the work of innovative artists and designers. The property is furnished with contemporary art, furniture and design – sourced from both emerging artists and established names like Marimekko and Dinosaur Designs.

What makes it a truly unique place to stay is that guests have the opportunity to purchase anything within the house that takes their fancy, either through the Made By Others store or by being introduced to the artists and designers directly.

“We’ve always loved connecting people with fabulous art and design through our store,” said Anna. “House By Them is a natural extension of that love. Not only is it a great base for people from which to explore the Southern Highlands, but it is a wonderful opportunity to share some of the art and design that we love with our guests.”

Ursula and Anna worked tirelessly to curate everything, from the furniture to the art on the walls to the homewares, via sources that fitted with their existing philosophies. “While we already knew from our experience at Made By Others where we could source a lot of things, we still really had to look everywhere to find exactly what we needed in order to make the house just right,” Ursula said.

The house is available year-round and can be booked through Highlands Holidays via the website.

BabyMac’s Beth knows there’s no place like home

Beth MacDonald (aka BabyMac) is a super popular mummy blogger who moved to the country and created the most cosy looking home for her family. Here she shares a look inside and explains juggling motherhood with being a neat freak.

Baby Mac house 1

This Southern Highlands house has a huge open plan living space, plenty of lovely natural light, a colourful mix of old and new furniture and a wonderful fire, perfect for snuggling up by with a glass of red. Jealous.

Baby Mac house exterior

“Home is so important to me,” says Beth. “It’s everything. While it’s not all about ‘stuff’ or an exact place, it’s about being totally comfortable and at peace and happy. It’s being with people that you love, and who love you. It’s about pottering about and doing things that make you happy and it’s where all my very favourite things in the world happen: the first sip of a hot coffee, the crackling start of the fire being lit, a champagne bottle popping with friends over, serving a meal to people that I love and care for, reading a quiet magazine, gardening or watching the sunset out on the verandah with a drink in hand and (husband) Rob by my side.”
