4 tips to help you fall in love with your home

Have you fallen out of love with your home? You’re not alone, as a new report reveals that one in four Australians don’t feel emotionally connected to their abodes.

When asked about the ‘why’ behind this sentiment, 36% of respondents cited feeling like it’s a place of residence rather than a home, 35% said that renting restricts their choices, 17% said their homes don’t reflect their taste and personality, while 11% said their place was too small but it was all they could currently afford.

This research was commissioned by Luxo Living, Australia’s largest online boutique furniture store. Because interior design has a huge impact on our mood and feelings, “as we embrace the warmer months and look to entertain more guests, it’s important to feel comfortable and proud of your space, no matter the size!” says founder Winston Tu.

Winston shares his top tips to turn your house into a home:

1. Keep your lifestyle top of mind

It’s easy to get caught up in beautiful inspirational photos on Pinterest and Instagram, but does it embody your lifestyle? For example, a cream couch or rug may not be the best choice if you have children or pets, a dining table that has ample space should be considered if you like to entertain, or investing in multi-functional pieces might be wiser if you’re tight on space. Your furniture should be both aesthetically pleasing and practical, for example, you can use this three-tiered Natural Rattan Shelf as a coffee table, a display platform for your home décor, or a bar cart.

2. Declutter, declutter, declutter!

No matter how big your home is, clutter produces physical and unconscious chaos. This feeling of distress, whether you’re acutely aware of it or not, can cause immediate tension. Try the 12-12-12 challenge – locate 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate and 12 to be put back in their place. If this is too drastic for you, invest in organisational tools like drawer inserts or jars, or loan items to friends for a specific period to see if you miss them. Another way to ‘hide’ mess is to invest in an ottoman.

3. Create harmony

Balance equals happiness, right? This same principle applies to home decorating. No matter your personal style – colours, materials and symmetry need to align. If you choose to go for a natural and organic coffee table, incorporate cotton, linens and cool tones in other pieces. If you want to incorporate patterns, on the other hand, a core colour will reduce clashing.

4. Embrace your senses

A lot of people only consider sight when they decorate their home, but you should also incorporate touch, sound and smell. You can do this by including candles, diffusers, flowers or different textures and materials to touch. A luxurious and soft Boucle ottoman will seamlessly blend in with your existing décor and accent pieces.

Memories make a house a home according to IKEA study

In timely news (with Christmas on the doorstep) IKEA’s latest Life at Home Report has found that memories are key to making a house feel like a home. Whether it’s the scent of a much-loved family recipe or the sound of a familiar Christmas carol playing in the background, the report found that almost half of Aussies agree that a place is considered home because of the happy memories associated with it.

IKEA home

“As an interior designer it’s important to me that where we live is a place we can call home for many reasons. Home should be functional, comfortable and beautiful. It’s a place that truly represents who we are. The one thing that never goes out of style is the nostalgia we feel when we step inside our home. Home should be a space where your family and friends can celebrate and enjoy all the big and small moments together,” says IKEA Australia interior design leader Christine Gough.

IKEA dining room table

The study also found that over a third of Australians believe home is the place where they spend time with loved ones, and that home is wherever their loved ones are. In fact, three in ten Aussies feel more at home in places outside of their home with one in three feeling more at home in their parents’ home than their own abode. Furthermore (and rather interestingly) 16 per cent feel more at home in friend’s home.

IKEA outdoor entertaining

Personally I’ve always believed that beautiful design has value well beyond aesthetics. Without stating the obvious, if a home not only looks great but feels comfortable and welcoming, people are more likely to spend time there and from that memories grow.

“Nostalgia is a key element of what makes a home a home. This insight shows that homes are so much more complex than simply just the four walls around you. Everyone has a unique memory about what makes their home special, whether it be how incredibly comfortable your parents’ sofa is, the smell of your grandparents’ cooking that you can’t find anywhere else or the feel of the grass from playing in your backyard with your friends. These details are what makes a home a home,” says Christine.

IKEA lounge room

And proving that our homes are filled with more than just ‘things,’ over half of Australian’s (53.5 per cent) state that furniture items connected to specific memories make a house feel more like home. “We’re a sentimental nation and we’re often guarding trinkets and treasures that are close to our hearts. Anything that evokes positive memories are worth having a special place in the home,” says Christine.

Why I heart Selling Houses Australia

In Collaboration with Lifestyle

I have Foxtel for the Lifestyle channel only. Fact! I am a total Selling Houses Australia addict. I even watch those really old episodes I’ve already seen before (maybe more than once!). I just love this show, and having been lucky  enough to meet and get to know Shaynna Blaze and Charlie Albone in the course of my job, I really feel like I know them and I know their great on-screen chemistry is the real deal. And as for that Andrew Winter, how hilarious is he?! I love his cutting sarcasm and no-holds-barred dressing downs of the homeowners when they get a little too greedy come auction time (and how often does that happen, eh?!).

I think what I love most about the show is that it keeps it real, much like this blog. They really do work with some challenging (and that’s putting it nicely) homes and unlike some of those bigger budget makeover shows, we are not talking unrecognisable transformations here. We’re talking realistic changes without over-captilising which fix the main issues that have been stopping the properties from selling, sometimes for years! The shows are full of inspiration for DIY fixes we could all try at home without having to re-mortgage. And let’s not forget that crucial ingredient: human interest! There are always stories behind the homeowners; usually ones which pull at the old heart strings, and I’m a sucker for that!

So of course I’m loving the new series of Selling Houses Australia on Lifestyle. Have you been tuning in? Episode one was a cracker: a converted church in the middle of nowhere outside Adelaide. Entry to the house is through a derelict bathroom (you couldn’t make it up). The quirky Dutch expat owners bought it on a bit of whim with visions of a country weekender. They started renovating but a serious injury to David stopped their progress and then all their focus went into their new chess cafe business.

BEFORE exterior

AFTER exterior

But of course, Shaynna and Charlie are up for the challenge to turn it into eclectic, Instagram-worthy holiday accommodation! Shaynna makes great use of paint to make a big impact on a small budget (including a brave black feature wall). She creates a bathroom with some seriously wow factor tiles, paints the existing kitchen black and adds quirky and repurposed furniture.

BEFORE bathroom

AFTER bathroom

Charlie makes the out buildings stripey, defines the front courtyard, has a bee hive relocated by the professionals and plants low-maintenance natives. And it all pays off, as after the first open they receive two offers and sell for $250,000.

BEFORE kitchen

AFTER kitchen

In episode two we meet Queensland empty nester Kelly and her large family of rescue greyhounds (and other canine friends). I always cringe when I see a house full of dogs (not that I’m not a fan). You know what’s coming: unpleasant smells and claw damage! And let’s not talk about the room with a treadmill for the dogs to exercise on! Kelly is clearly struggling to keep on top of her acreage and her house on her own, alongside her busy job as a train guard. As with many of the show’s case studies, Kelly is emotional about leaving a home where she has brought up her kids and been through a lot.

Charlie and Shaynna know they’re in for some serious hard work, but as always, they rise to the challenge! In his best English accent, Charlie describes it as “quite dreadful,” and Shaynna says: “it’s dark, bad colour scheme, dirty, but to me it’s more about the floor plan.” Off to a great start! But of course, they do a great job, and for once, Kelly is a realistic seller! Kelly received a good offer which sadly fell through, but there was interest and hopefully she has sold by now.

This series is off to a strong start and I can’t wait to watch the rest!

Selling Houses Australia series 11 is on Lifestyle Channel at 7.30pm on Thursdays and is repeated on Lifestyle HOME.

Melbourne trade show celebrates boutique lifestyle brands

Running from 3 – 5 August in Melbourne’s Kensington, Rogue Lifestyle is a three-day trade event showcasing over 40 Australian lifestyle and kids brands. With exhibitors including Pony Rider, Ahoy Trader, Bobo Choses and Sack Me, the boutique event will also feature local food and coffee vendors as well as live music.

It’s been brought to life by Emma Patterson, designer of kid’s homewares brand Homely Creatures, who wanted to showcase her wares in a way that didn’t cost the earth.

“We are a small industry and we love to connect with each other – not just brands to buyers, but brands to brands as well,” says Emma. “We’re going back to why we all started going to trade shows in the first place: to connect, get inspired, make quality collaborations happen, and get real value.

“Australia has so many great brands, but many of them have taken to showing in their own studios or hotels, making it really hard for buyers to visit everyone they want to see. It’s also stressful for them to all have to become event coordinators and deal with the time and monetary costs associated with creating your own mini show, which may not pull the crowds.”

This year, Rogue Lifestyle has teamed up with students from Jenna Densten’s (of The Block’s Josh and Jenna) Design School. They’ll be co-ordinating live flatlay installations and interior shoots using the products from the event’s own line-up.

Samsung study reveals changing face of Australian home

The results are in! Samsung have done some hefty research into the lifestyles of Aussie households to discover what trends really affect our lives and how we use technology to improve them.

20150825_Samsung_SHOT09_0397

Out of the thousand that participated in the study, more than half (62%) identified saving money on bills as the most important benefit of a digitally connected home, followed by energy savings (45%) and convenience (43%).

Samsung also found that the average household throws away more than $1,000 worth of food each year, with NSW wasting about $1,475, almost double that of QLD! I know my household is a definite culprit. Also, as we’re coming up to the festive season, we spend two and a half times our average monthly food bill on Christmas entertaining (that’s a lot of honey glazed ham and prawns).

When it comes to entertainment, 55% prefer entertaining at home because it’s a good money saver, and 45% say it’s more sociable, not to mention flexible.

In terms of cleaning, 12 hours per week is spent on housework, and 33% believe technology will make their household chores easier in the future.

RF24J9960XC-SA_009_Dynamic3_Silver

Utilising these results, Samsung have released their Australians@HOME range to help households with everyday chores through Wi-Fi enabled home devices that can be personalised to specific needs. Products include the POWERbot VR9200 with vision mapping ($1,799), Ultra Large Capacity Washing Machine with auto detergent dispenser ($3,999), Chef Collection fridge with built-in tray for marinating meat ($7,999), and Chef Collection Vapour Oven with a full touch LCD screen ($2,999).

Country Road open café as part of new lifestyle concept

A stylish Country Road café near the beach, where you can also shop. Sounds like an interiors addict’s dream, right?! Now if only I lived in Victoria…

CHEW8207

Iconic Aussie brand Country Road are redefining traditional retail with the launch of their new full lifestyle concept in Sorrento, VIC, at the historic post office building in the main street.

CHEW8222

Combining a café, retail space and surrounding gardens, the new store celebrates the heritage of the local landmark. Mixing old with new, the light and pared back palette of the interior is a refreshing backdrop to compliment the Woman, Man, Child and Home collections.

“Our Sorrento store has been designed to feel as though you have stepped into a family home. Each room has its own character and with the addition of a café and gardens, we have created a real life expression of Country Road,” says managing director, Sophie Holt.

CHEW7661

CHEW7619

Large, metal-framed windows allow natural light to fill the store where the Country Road Woman and Man collections make a statement amidst exposed timber beams, textured brickwork and a polished concrete floor. The spirit of Country Road Child comes to life with pieces displayed on timber tables and bench seats akin to a classic schoolroom. As you walk through Country Road Home, the space organically flows into the café and onto the terrace, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces.

CHEW8259

The café at Country Road Sorrento will be known as Post 3943 and is a collaboration with local organic café The Sisters. Surrounding gardens include a vegetable patch which will supply home-grown herbs and fresh produce to the café daily.

Country Road Sorrento is located at 10-16 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento, VIC. Open daily, 10am to 4pm.

The Tabletop Project day 4: blogger Nikki Yazxhi of bellaMUMMA

Christmas is all about gathering together for a feast with your favourite people. Sydney furniture makers Mark Tuckey asked seven of their favourite creatives to create a Christmas table (Some are glitzy, some are glam, some are just plain dotty) and we’re sharing one with you each day this week.

0035_DSC4421-2

Beauty blogger Nikki chose the traditional looking Farmhouse Table but went for a look that wasn’t traditionally Christmassy. “I went for an over abundance of peonies (my faves, which are only around at Christmas time), pink reindeer and a glitter gold star theme.

0020_DSC4300

“I kept the peonies cut short so guests could see each other across the table, and scattered them down the entire length of the table in different sized vases. I tried to create ‘deconstructed bon-bons’ with super-cute crowns and star headbands, and little chocolate treats in the Uashmama bags, placed on everyone’s plate.

0024_DSC4333

“The serviettes were tied with baker’s twine and feature a little pink reindeer. And so I didn’t cover the amazing Mark Tuckey table, I made my ‘placemats’ using an outline of glitter washi tape.

0005_DSC4252

“Finally, to get all the senses going, I placed gorgeous Maison Blanche ‘Australian Christmas’ and ‘Buttered Popcorn’ candles down the middle of the table, which smelt amazing!”

Henry Corbett & Co: a holistic approach to lifestyle where interiors are just one element

We all have a ‘dream’ space, a place in our heads that we retreat to to escape the daily grind. Maybe it’s an old cosy bedroom from a childhood home, or a hammock stretched between two palms on an anonymous stretch of white sand – be it fictional or real, when we imagine this place, we are immediately transported to a space perfectly idyllic and suited to all of own personal tastes and needs. Well, Henry Corbett & Co can help to make some of those dreams come true – at least for those of us with more luxurious taste, that is.

HenryCorbettAndCo041b

With a belief that interiors are delicately woven into our day from the moment we wake up, this boutique business (which opened last month) aims to offer a truly unique service for those seeking to create a beautiful space; be it at home or as a place of business. With a holistic outlook on design, Henry Corbett & Co effortlessly combines architecture, interior design, lifestyle and culture to provide its clients with everything they need to build their dream space from the ground up.

The company’s architecture and interior design business offers clients the chance to take control of the design of their space from a structural and decorative perspective, drawing on the expertise and skills of their team who have backgrounds in the fields of architecture, interior design, construction and engineering. With a penchant for sourcing natural, but luxurious products, Henry Corbett & Co aims to create ‘design forward sanctuaries’ for its clients; from the spatial planning, to the colour scheme, to the lighting selection.

The unique retail space, located in Woollahra in Sydney’s east, effectively compliments this service by showcasing a range of lifestyle and culture products including furniture, home accessories, fashion items, apothecary and more. The idea behind the diverse range is to inspire clients looking to style their space from top to bottom, in a manner that truly reflects who they are. The selection of the pieces, designed by artisans from around the globe, is guided by the company’s philosophy of transfusing luxury with authenticity to create organic, elegant design, with a particular focus on natural materials.

Without a doubt, the intricately intertwined services offered Henry Corbett & Co provide a design experience that is unlike many others. And for those who find themselves lost in a land of luxury and style when they daydream, a visit to Henry Corbett & Co’s beautiful boutique will feel like the first step towards making that dream come to life.
