7 show stopping coffee tables (that aren’t rectangular!)

For those of you following The Block (but come on, who isn’t?!), you may have noticed something in the latest reveals: not one team went for a rectangular coffee table.

Every coffee table featured in the reveals was a round, stylish (and metallic) number. Why? Because a coffee table should be a statement pieces rather than an afterthought – that and the fact that a non-rectangular option can also soften the angles of a room and leave enough space to move around comfortably.

Since I was recently in the market for one of my own, I thought I would share the best of the options without angles out there.

Origami Coffee Table

If I could list all of west elm’s options, I would. The Origami Coffee Table is the latest addition to my furniture family because it’s perfect for a small living room – and because the geometric legs under the bone inlay top are uber cool. ($599 from west elm)

Palm Springs Coffee Table in Natural

Bring the outdoors in with the beautiful entangled palm leaves and smokey glass of this boho number. ($495 from The Family Love Tree)

Vionnet Vertical Round Coffee Table

White natural marble top (none of that horrible fake stuff) against a sleek black powder coated metal base – it doesn’t get more classic than that. ($1,515 from GlobeWest)

Hammered Drum Coffee Table

Add a bit of glitz and glamour to your living room with this metallic number. ($799 from Freedom)

Lövbacken Coffee Table

You can’t go wrong with this thrifty but stylish table from IKEA, featuring a distinctive grain pattern on the almost leaf-shaped top, and cute gold tips on the legs. ($129 from IKEA)

Marble-Topped Pedestal Coffee Table

Another entry featuring a beautiful marble top, this coffee table exudes all sorts of luxury with its spun brass base. Just because it looks luxurious, doesn’t mean you can’t still put your feet up! ($899 from west elm)

Charcoal & Bone Inlay Coffee Table

The bone inlay look may be the new marble, with everyone jumping on the bandwagon – but this coffee table is just wow. The stunning combination of teal and white has everlasting appeal and is sure to create a relaxed eclectic elegance in your home. ($2,190 from Zohi Interiors)

Greg Natale’s New York-inspired furniture collection

Inspired by his favourite city (and admittedly mine too!), Greg Natale’s latest furniture collection, HUDSON (a salute to New York), features an elegant range of case goods, lounges, beds, sofas, dining tables, chairs and occasional tables.

“I first visited NYC in my early twenties. It was love at first sight. After all this time I still find myself swept up in the spirit of the Metropolis; each year I unearth a new layer that inspires, provokes and invigorates me creatively. HUDSON is a nod to the flourish, the glamour and the refinement that New York enjoyed post-Second World War, in designing HUDSON I wanted to honour both a city and a golden age.”

Comprising of 20 superbly finished products, the range created in partnership with respected, family-owned Australian furniture makers, Casa Mia, evokes an old world charm with a contemporary twist.

Huset on why you should shop original not replica

Wanting to bring high-quality, original design pieces to Australia, brothers Ryan, Charlie and Brett Parnham opened Huset in 2012.

With both a showroom in Cheltenham, Victoria (20 minutes south of Melbourne) and an online store; Huset stock original furniture from around the world, including TON, Normann Copenhagen and Brokis. With a strong anti-replica stance, the brothers came into business wanting to give the high-end furniture space a good shake up, with a great range of products and exceptional service. “Huset is a proud supplier of original furniture,” explains Ryan. “That meaning it is manufactured under licence by the designer. Most of our manufacturers are located in Europe and have been around for many years, TON for example have been around since 1861!”

Also engaging various artists as in store pop up guests, Huset are particularly interested in giving global designers an Australian audience. “Our biggest thing is giving our designers a chance to display their wares, reach a greater audience and be enjoyed by people Australia wide,” says Ryan. “Products like the hand blown glass range by Brokis definitely blew our minds. We loved it, so why wouldn’t we want everyone else to enjoy it? That’s what we are about and where our inspiration comes from.”

In a world that is rife with replica furniture it can be tempting to go for the cheaper version, especially if from a quick glance it looks the same. But the brothers are vehemently against it, and here’s why: “You really can’t compare originals to replicas,” explains Ryan. “They are worlds apart in terms of quality, and sometimes they look worlds apart in their aesthetic. An original piece will stand the test of time. Something to pass down to the next generation to be enjoyed for years to come. A replica will eventually break and end up in your hard rubbish.”

Shadows-Pendants

Hoping to continue to import original pieces, as well as focusing on developing their Australian made range, Huset’s future looks bright. “We know we produce great stuff right here at home and want to work with more designers and craftsmen locally,” says Ryan. “We are working closely with local Melbourne design firm Bent Design Studio to develop a range of furniture to meet the local market’s demands and help keep the jobs here. Stay tuned for the next big thing from us and we hope you will love it as much as we do.”

Online shopping fix: Seventh Lane Textiles & Homewares

While Ashlee Farrell is busy designing beautiful and colourful cushions and wall prints, her boyfriend Kal, is lovingly handcrafting unique reclaimed tables refurbished from old pallets.

Together, their designs form Seventh Lane Textiles & Homewares, a business Ashlee has always dreamed of owning.“Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved decorating. While both my sisters were playing with their Barbies, I was redecorating the doll house! Fast forward 20 years and not much has changed, except now I’m designing original and inspiring homewares to use in real life homes!”

Designing pieces that can easily be mixed and matched, they try to stay away from the transient current trends. “Creating that peaceful, happy, vibrant and eclectic home you crave is less about following this season’s trends or studying those all-important style rules. It’s about knowing who you are and reflecting your values and beliefs into a space that says: ‘I live here’.”

Husband and wife behind Plank and Trestle build tables to last

In a world that is filled with mass-produced products, husband-and-wife design duo Lana and Mike Hall have a refreshing aim: to craft each piece of furniture as if it were for their own home.

Coastal Collection - White Sand

“We don’t want our tables to be two-year mass-market wonders that are replaced when their paint chips and their shine fades,” explains Lana. “We want our tables to last generations and the workmanship and attention to detail we devote to each table really shows this. We think in a world filled with mass-produced furniture, it’s important to take time to appreciate pieces that are made and designed with integrity, passion and skill.”

Coloured Collection - Black Beauty

As the masterminds behind Plank and Trestle (Lana designs, while Mike builds), they are, as far as they know, the only Australian company devoted solely to the design and manufacture of trestle tables. Having been obsessed with trestle tables for many years, it wasn’t until Lana bought her first home that she suddenly became aware of how hard it was to find one. Either a cheap mass-market overseas make or an ultra expensive designer piece, there were no options in the middle for high quality, wow-factor tables that were still reasonably priced.

Enter husband Mike, who after they got married built a beautiful bespoke trestle table as a gift. “After Mike built that first table, without realising it I started focusing all my down time on designing different types of trestle tables and talking through with him how they could be made. Unbeknownst to us, it was completely out of our hands and we had no choice. In 2011, Plank and Trestle had been born!”

Traditional Collection - Natural Pine

With four collections available (and more in the works) there is a trestle table to suit all households. There’s the Coloured Collection; the Duets Collection ( with contrasting table top and legs), the Coastal Collection (made from recycled whitewashed timber) and the Traditional Collection, which is a basic timber Scandinavian design. These collections can be teamed with three styles of trestle legs and can be custom-made even further, via size, texture or colour. And in Lana’s mind, there’s no request too hard!

“As each trestle table is made by us in our workshop, we have complete control over how it is made and can adapt our tables to any of our clients’ needs. Over half of our business is custom-making bespoke trestle tables for clients who want a specific size for a particular space or havea design in mind that they can’t find anywhere. Custom-makes are lots of fun because it is where we can get really creative! We love the colours some of our clients ask for – I dream of a neon trestle table order coming through one day.”

With their business continuing to grow, Lana and Mike have big dreams for the coming years, hoping to create more collections, grow their retail offering and hire their first employee. “Our immediate priority is to get some down time to work on our new ranges as we have three or four on paper in the design stage. By next year, we also hope to transition Mike out of the day-to-day trestle building by employing some talented local (NSW South Coast) craftsmen to help us meet our weekly orders (hint hint, anyone who wants to build trestles with us!).”

Hand turned timber lamps, made in Sydney

I love the warmth of timber and its natural quirks and imperfections, so these Australian hand turned lamps from Wildwood Designs really caught my eye.

IMG_0251

“Each piece is unique to us and has been lovingly hand turned by our local wood turner who was thrown out of TAFE on the first day of a wood turning course because he turned up with a telegraph pole,” laughs Wildwood’s Juliet Barr.
