Recliner chairs are cool again. No, really!

Sponsored by Brosa

More retirement home than chic abode, the humble (yet much loved) recliner chair doesn’t exactly have a name as stylish furniture icon. It always struck me as such a shame that something so damn comfy had to be so ugly, in many cases! So I was blown away by Brosa’s successful attempt at making them cool again and had to share!

The slimline Calypso

Recliners weren’t previously in the Brosa range and they realised their only competitors were traditional, dark, dated, or all of the above. “The market is saturated with leather, and we wanted to bring a fun and vibrant approach,” said category manager Anna Scafidas “There have also been advances in technology which could be adapted to these products.”

The Sloan

Anna agrees that the traditional recliner chair has suffered from a bad reputation in the style stakes. “The classic traditional designs in older colours and fabrics can be dated and also bulky looking, taking centre stage for the wrong reasons! They seem ‘lazy’ rather than comfortable, supportive and relaxing.” Ultimately, there was not much out there with on-trend colours or fabrics.

Brosa’s new electric recliners have an easy to use button and smooth German technology makes for a comfortable recline with lower back support. The contemporary designs are both good-looking and understated.

Soft curves and organic shapes have been used to great effect, with premium fabrics in muted colours (Calico Cream, Spearmint Green, Steel Blue and Aubergine Purple). The armchairs work in well with a variety of styles.

There are three chair designs as well as a love seat (two-seater sofa). My favourite’s the Calyspo.

We think even Frasier Crane would approve if Marty brought one of these home!

Interview: DesignByThem celebrate 10 years of Aussie design

10 years ago, in their final semester of university, Sarah Gibson and Nick Karlovasitis began brainstorming an idea for a business. Studying industrial design they were surrounded by young furniture designers chasing representation from companies overseas. It was a tough slog! So they decided to create DesignByThem, a brand that promoted Australian design and provided a viable platform for designers.

Sarah and Nick

Designing furniture themselves and collaborating with a stellar cohort of Australian designers; as the brand have grown in size, so too have their products. “Initially we designed mainly smaller accessories – maybe because we were designing out of an apartment and couldn’t fit anything else,” explains Sarah. “But slowly, as we kept moving to bigger and bigger spaces our products have become bigger too. The Cabin range is sure proof of that!”

Cabin Booth

Cabin Armchair and Ottoman

Working from home for the business’ first few months, storage was at a premium, with the garage stocked full of prototypes. Time was spent designing and raising awareness, so that DesignByThem could reach their goal of supporting fellow designers. “The scale of our collection is really what we’ve focused on over the years,” says Sarah. “Development started slowly and sped up as we surrounded ourselves with a great network of talented designers, manufacturers and staff.”

Bow Chair

With some 70 designs in their collection, featuring the work of Aussie talents like Stefan Lie, Trent Jansen, Tommy Cehak and many more, DesignByThem creates products that are consistent and true to their design ethos. “Rather than seeking to stand out we seek to be a brand with longevity,” explains Sarah. “Hopefully with products that are original and timeless, although this is a very hard thing to do. We plan to be around for a long time, and hope our considered approach is respected in the long term too.”

Baker Table and Butter Stools

Their broad range makes it’s hard to pick a favourite, but for Sarah, it’s the Butter Stool and Cabin Lounge: “For its playfulness, comfort and flexibility.” While for Nick, it’s the Piper Chair and the TomTom Letterbox (which Jen has and adores!): “I love the way people love this product, it’s endearing to see people’s reactions to it. This was also our first collaboration, with designer Tommy Cehak, who came up with the concept of people wanting to represent their style at the front gate.”

TomTom Letterbox

Piper Bar Stool

Now gaining traction overseas, particularly in the US, DesignByThem has some exciting prospects for the next 10 years and beyond. “We’ve seen the business move gradually to the overseas market so we’re excited to see where this takes us,” says Sarah. “We’ve also got some exciting new collections and collaborations happening early next year and plan on continuing the current momentum of designs and ideas.”

Want quality designer furniture without breaking the bank? Who doesn’t, right? I want a sofa where I will have enough left over for all the cushions I’ll be drowning it in!

Well, Castlery is here to deliver. A newbie on Australian shores, these guys cut out all the middlemen, warehouses and shopfronts. The result? Quality furniture that comes with an honest price – no high markups, no unnecessary extra costs. It means you no longer have to choose between quality, design and price!

Here are some of my favourites from their latest offerings.

Aaron Bed

Fabric bedheads are all the rage right now, and the Aaron bed with its sleek asymmetrical stitched pattern is a perfect fit for any bedroom style. ($999)

Otis Dining Table

Step aside rectangular dining tables – the Otis dining table is here to add some soft industrial vibes with its solid oak top and black powdercoated metal stand. This table is perfect for making a statement at your next dinner party. ($1,499)

Albert Bookshelf, Low

Simple, modern and with heaps of storage space. What else do you want from a bookshelf? The shelves are made from solid rubber wood and feature a clever lip at the back to prevent any of your precious books or vignettes from falling overboard. ($449)

Seb Dining Bench

Add some casual dining vibes to your dinner table with the Seb dining bench. The curved corners soften the Scandi feel and the solid acacia wood with dark grey upholstered cushion create a warm and inviting seat for your tush. ($289)

Naomi Sofa

The curves on this sofa are alluring, the tapered birch wood legs beautifully feminine. This would be at home in an Art Deco living room. ($879)

Alfred TV Console

So industrial, so cool – the Alfred TV console is linear, clean and modern. It has plenty of storage space with its four soft closing drawers, so you can quickly throw in anything lying around before the guests show up. Oh, and the interior is a dramatic red – almost like a classy Louboutin in furniture form! ($829)

Hunter Coffee Table

This one will tug at your French Country heartstrings. Made from reclaimed pine that is salvaged from shipping containers and palettes, the honey coloured coffee table is both beautifully functional and environmentally friendly. ($549)

6 stylish office chairs (yes, they exist!)

Style, comfort and functionality: three concepts that seem to elude one another when it comes to office furniture. Why are ‘good-looking’ and ‘office chair’ such opposed terms? My home office consists of a little nook that opens up to the open plan living and kitchen area – an ugly office chair would simply ruin the look and feel of the rest of the space.

I have scoured the internet and every furniture store I could find to bring you the most stylish office chairs out there – for all budget types!

Slope leather office chair

Wow. I barely have words to describe how beautiful this office chair is. Covered in supple, top-grain tan leather, it features a curve in the seat to make sitting down for hours not only comfortable, but uber stylish. The legs are eloquently designed and finished in antique bronze. $499 from west elm.

Elsie office chair

With a ribbed, pocketed back, soft beige fabric upholstery and a contrasting sleek chrome base, this chair oozes effortless elegance. $210 from Domayne.

Irving office chair

I may be addicted to brown leather furniture (okay, so this one isn’t real, but that may please the vegans among you!). This chair features a padded seat that is upholstered in high quality PU, and the seat cocoons the sitter with moulded arm rests for extra comfort. The base is made from sturdy steel, and the whole thing is easy to wipe down and keep clean in case you happen to spill some coffee. $299 from Freedom.

Skruvsta swivel chair

Are you looking to add some pops of colour to your home office? Then look no further than Ikea’s swivel chair. Ridiculously cushy, the geometric bold print will brighten any dull space and won’t break the bank. $149 from Ikea.

Mid-Century Swivel Office Chair

Another one from west elm (I am obsessed with their products), this doesn’t look like a ‘real’ desk chair, but don’t let the timeless design fool you. Not only is this chair comfortable, but it also has a swivel base that makes it extremely versatile. And the cherry on top is the lack of wheels on the legs! $499 from west elm.

Chen Zhiyi net swivel chair

This contemporary black swivel chair features an Eames-inspired silhouette, complete with a diamond-patterned seat and chrome finish steel legs. The clean, minimalist design will suit any style. $149 from Life Interiors.

Tropics and metallics on offer in IKEA’s latest collection

Oh sweet, sweet IKEA! Quality products at reasonable prices. What’s not to love?

MYRHEDEN Frame

IKEA’s latest release lives up to its celebrated reputation, filled with deep colours, golden accents and a touch of the tropical.

KOARP Armchair

FADO Table Lamp

For the living room, there’s a modern armchair with a handy magazine pocket, in a range of fresh colours, and a practical sofa bed that makes room for spontaneous sleepovers in under 30 seconds. There are plenty of new textiles to help cosy up the place, from rugs to throws. Plus a selection of new lighting and decorative objects to help set the right mood.

ODGER Chair

When it comes to dining, IKEA’s launched a chair that combines iconic design with sustainable innovation. Made with a mix of wood and plastic – where more than 50% of the plastic is recycled – the chair is a more environmentally sustainable choice than virgin oil-based products. To continue the theme, there’s a new dinnerware series that’s made partly of glass from IKEA factory scraps. And for special occasions, cutlery in brass or black adds some glitz and glamour to your table.

PRISTELLA Tray, TILLAGD Cutlery and STORHET Champagne Coupe

On the kitchen front, a new worktop creates a genuine look of ash while saving on wood, and leather handles made of leather scraps give a new twist to storage. In the bathroom the ingenuity continues, with new taps in a range of styles to help save on water and energy.

Huset on why you should shop original not replica

Wanting to bring high-quality, original design pieces to Australia, brothers Ryan, Charlie and Brett Parnham opened Huset in 2012.

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 12.52.06 pm

With both a showroom in Cheltenham, Victoria (20 minutes south of Melbourne) and an online store; Huset stock original furniture from around the world, including TON, Normann Copenhagen and Brokis. With a strong anti-replica stance, the brothers came into business wanting to give the high-end furniture space a good shake up, with a great range of products and exceptional service. “Huset is a proud supplier of original furniture,” explains Ryan. “That meaning it is manufactured under licence by the designer. Most of our manufacturers are located in Europe and have been around for many years, TON for example have been around since 1861!”

Freddy_Sofa

Also engaging various artists as in store pop up guests, Huset are particularly interested in giving global designers an Australian audience. “Our biggest thing is giving our designers a chance to display their wares, reach a greater audience and be enjoyed by people Australia wide,” says Ryan. “Products like the hand blown glass range by Brokis definitely blew our minds. We loved it, so why wouldn’t we want everyone else to enjoy it? That’s what we are about and where our inspiration comes from.”

stockholm-danish-scandi-table

In a world that is rife with replica furniture it can be tempting to go for the cheaper version, especially if from a quick glance it looks the same. But the brothers are vehemently against it, and here’s why: “You really can’t compare originals to replicas,” explains Ryan. “They are worlds apart in terms of quality, and sometimes they look worlds apart in their aesthetic. An original piece will stand the test of time. Something to pass down to the next generation to be enjoyed for years to come. A replica will eventually break and end up in your hard rubbish.”

Shadows-Pendants

Hoping to continue to import original pieces, as well as focusing on developing their Australian made range, Huset’s future looks bright. “We know we produce great stuff right here at home and want to work with more designers and craftsmen locally,” says Ryan. “We are working closely with local Melbourne design firm Bent Design Studio to develop a range of furniture to meet the local market’s demands and help keep the jobs here. Stay tuned for the next big thing from us and we hope you will love it as much as we do.”

Hans J. Wegner’s Wishbone Chair now available in 25 colours

The “chair maker of chair makers,” Hans J. Wegner was never one to shy away from experimentation and bold expression. Known for his groundbreaking work with material, form, function and colour, today, Carl Hansen & Son have taken Hans’ iconic 65-year-old Wishbone Chair (or CH24) and made it available in 25 distinctive colour-lacquered options, inspired by Hans’ original palette.

With colours ranging from soft neutrals to bold, vibrant hues – they lend themselves to almost every imaginable interior decor and taste. of paper cord for the optimal seating experience. The production of the Wishbone Chair includes 100 production steps, most of which are done by hand.

Hans J Wegner chairs get the Paul Smith treatment

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of renowned Danish designer Hans J Wegner, fashion designer Paul Smith and textile provider Maharam have collaborated with Carl Hansen & Søn (the world’s largest manufacture of furniture designed by Wegner). The collaboration sees the release of a limited edition collection of some of Hans’ most iconic works, with a perhaps equally iconic stripe!

Wegner, with his pioneering Modernist aesthetic, was best known for his idiosyncratic chair designs, such as the Wishbone. Created in 1950, this piece, with its characteristic-shaped back support, became one of his greatest successes; other definitive designs include the three-legged Shell Chair, the minimalist CH28, the CH163 sofa and the contemporary classic, the Wing Chair.

This collaboration however, takes the work of Wegner and transforms it. With Paul Smith himself having personally selected his favourite classic Wegner pieces to launch a capsule collection, upholstered in ‘Big Stripe’ and the new colours of ‘Stripes’.

Designed by Smith in collaboration with Maharam, these two wool textiles explore stripes at dramatically different scales, conveying Smith’s imaginative approach to colour and proportion. As part of a touring exhibition, the collection was unveiled at this year’s Milan Fair in April before arriving here in Australia. It will be presented at Paul Smith Melbourne and also at Kvadrat Maharam in Sydney until 26 September.

The limited edition furniture pieces will be available to purchase during this time from Paul Smith, 120 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Luxxbox’s latest seating range is as deceiving as it is beautiful

The latest offering by furniture, lighting and object studio Luxxbox, is as deceiving as it is beautiful. Entitled the Pillow Collection, what initially looks like a soft upholstered seat is really a heavy-duty moulded low profile chair, stool, or high chair.

Copy of Train scene full

The beauty of this seemingly delicate design is the juxtaposition of several high performing materials, with the leg variations including natural or black stained American Oak or the impressive copper legs. It’s this versatility within the range and countless color configurations which allow it to extend to indoor and outdoor applications both in residential and commercial settings.

Copy of Luxxbox - Pillow stool

The brainchild of Luxxbox founder and creative director Jason Bird, who is based in Melbourne, the designs are an idea he had been toying with for quite some time: “I’ve been playing with the idea of this design for nearly 10 years – the key design elements of the collection, the soft-look top, the integration between this and the timber legs and the sleek chair profiles. It has taken this long for design technology and production techniques to develop to a point where we could achieve the fantastic juxtaposition between a moulded top and timber legs.”

Prices start at $227, available through Luxxbox.
