Freedom launches limited edition series by ceramicist Stephanie Phillips

Furniture and homewares retailer Freedom is working with Australian designers and artists on a series of unique collaborations, kicking off with Sydney-based ceramicist Stephanie Phillips.

The three-piece limited edition collection, which is exclusive to Freedom, consists of a vase, lamp, and candle and will be available at select Freedom stores and online until stocks last.

“Freedom is committed to designing and creating beautiful products for our unique Australian lifestyle,” says Kate Hopwood, head of design. “As part of this, we love to support independent artists and designers such as Stephanie, who also happens to be one of our very own talented Freedom team mates.”

Stephanie’s work has been featured in Vogue Living and on The Design Files, she has hosted solo exhibitions and it was her selection in the 2019 Paris Design Week that saw every piece of her collection bought by fashion designer Jacquemus to display in his chic Parisian restaurant, Oursin.

“I was so excited when Kate asked me to collaborate,” says Stephanie. “I went straight into the studio for nearly four weeks straight, just sketching, making prototypes and going back and refining them.”

From a young age, Stephanie developed an affinity with the Australian bush which has largely influenced the forms and colours of her work. Drawing on her love of plants, she creates curved vessels to house a modern take on Ikebana using driftwood and bromeliads.

The Galina Lamp

The Galina Lamp is an earthy polyresin base paired with a natural Raffia shade that when combined are a match made in textural heaven. The glow of a lightbulb peeps through the knotted palm leaf features and light bounces off the playful curved details of the base, reminding the owner of the designer’s intent to create a moment and a mood.

The Stephanie Phillips Candle

The Stephanie Phillips Candle has a tactile finish and the Paulo Santo scented soy wax will provide 40 hours of burning time. Once burnt through, the vessel can be used to house the cutest of succulents or whatever you like!

The Obelia Vase

The largest in the collection, the Obelia Vase is not the kind of piece that stays in the cupboard until filled with flowers. A piece of décor in its own right, this ceramic vessel was designed by Steph to hold its own on your mantle or house your favourite garden blooms.

Self-taught artist Clare O’Donoghue turns art into homewares

It was while working in fashion, prior to becoming a mum, that Clare O’Donoghue’s painting became more than just a hobby.

ClareOD-Print-10173

“It started with my colleagues ordering pieces and then their friends,” explains Clare. “After the birth of my first baby 18 years ago, it become more and more busy and now in the last three years, ridiculously busy, with three more children added and doing a lot of work for interior designers and stylists.”

ClareOD-Print-10114

ClareOD-Print-10246

Now working as a full-time artist, whilst juggling her other role as mum of four, Clare has had a life-long love affair with art. “I am a self-taught artist, although I have always loved art… in primary school I would sneak into the art room at lunchtime! I did a super short-term fine arts school stint, but in the end I just wanted to do my own thing.”

ClareOD-Print-9979

[contextly_sidebar id=”WieQtPojRNbJE7wPAKQnU6ojd81FGHsj”]And clearly that approach worked, with Clare’s artworks proving so popular, she was offered the opportunity to turn them into homewares. “I was approached by Nerdia Hansen about 18 months ago, regarding them using my paintings to create soft textiles. So we selected some portions of my paintings, which were then printed on gorgeous textured linen and turned into cushions. I have also started to create lights, which are combining my paintings with lighting and fabric to create table lamps, wall lamps and pendants.”

ClareOD-Print-10088

ClareOD-Print-10238

With her homewares and prints available via her online shop and a range of bricks and mortar stockists, Clare also makes one-of-a-kind mixed media commissions. “I use inks, pastels, perspex, acrylic, collage and paper, as I love using different mediums to create different textures and looks and creating layers. When it comes to creating art I cannot say I have a particular formula I follow. If it’s a piece for a client I usually have a brief which may require some concepts, but all my other work just leaps almost uncontrollably onto the canvas tweaking the entire way with lots of standing back in between!”

ClareOD-Print-10136

With no grand plans for the future, Clare just hopes she can continue doing what she loves; making clients’ spaces feel good and most importantly, creating colourful, functional artworks that can positively affect the world. “It’s tricky to pick my proudest moment, but the feeling that comes with donating pieces to charity and someone admiring my work enough to bid, and then that money actually making a difference to someone’s life or foundation. Well that makes me feel really proud.”

The lightbulb you can play music through. Via your mobile!

As with anything tech, we hand over the reviewing to our resident former consumer technology journalist Damian Francis, aka Mr Interiors Addict 😉

Do you remember that time you wished your bedside lamp had a speaker in it? No, not just in the lamp itself, but right inside the actual bulb? Nope, neither can I. And yet here I am, staring at my bedside lamp with a bulb in it that contains a speaker.

Machtig, Sengled Pulse Solo - LED + Wireless Speakers, available in ES & BC (RRP $129). Pix 4LR

The company in question is Sengled and its aim is to turn your home into a connected home in a DIY fashion. No need to call in an electrician or rip down a few walls, just buy some of these Pulse Solo LED bulbs with 2×3-watt JBL speakers in them, download the app, and then boom, connected home. Kind of. In the sense that only the lights and speakers are automated via the Sengled app. Decent start, though. Carry on…

Sengled has four products in the range; the Pulse, Pulse Solo, Boost and Snap. They are all bulbs that can be controlled through the app, some with speakers in them. But they are not cheap. The Pulse Solo I tested retails for an eye-watering $129.99. Yes, it has a speaker in it. Yes, the bulb is LED and should last decades, but it’s quite a serious upfront cost for what essentially costs you a couple of dollars down at Coles for a traditional version sans speaker.

Is it worth the hernia inducing hit to the wallet for the long term benefits and the sweet sound of music coming from your lamp? Yes and no, but mostly no.

Machtig, Sengled Pulse Solo - LED + Wireless Speakers, available in ES & BC (RRP $129). Pix 3LR (1)

Let’s cut straight to the chase. It’s an app controlled light bulb and speaker with Bluetooth. For Interiors Addict readers that likely means a few things prior to purchase. It has to be stylish, it has to be functional, and it has to have a bit of ‘wow’ factor.

In terms of style, it’s heavier than a standard bulb and slightly bigger to boot thanks to the speakers. Largely white, you’re still going to want to hide this under a lamp shade. This isn’t a bulb you can show off naked. It doesn’t look bad, you just wouldn’t leave it bare.

Functionality is a big one for this bulb. It comes in E27 screw or B22 twist. It screws in easy and is ready to pair as soon as you switch it on. Once you download the app (iOS or Android) you can find the bulb and name it for easy access. You then have control of volume and brightness via a well laid out user interface. So installation and set-up are a breeze.

As for use, the Bluetooth is patchy, and that is being generous. Even with the source device within a metre of the bulb the sound would completely cut out regularly. And the sound quality – it’s just not good. Sorry, Sengled, but there is no other way to put it. For the price, consumers shouldn’t expect good sound quality, but this is certainly at the lower end of expectations. No bass what-so-ever, tinny highs, distortion. For anything other than soft background music, the Sengled Pulse Solo just isn’t up to the job.

When it comes to ‘wow’ factor, the Pulse Solo is much like the first iteration of Apple TV, the Toyota Prius or that coffee made from animal droppings. It makes you do a double take, the features seem pretty cool, but the execution just isn’t there to be continually useful or urgently needed.

If you just want a connected bulb, Belkin provides a similar system for cheaper as it doesn’t contain speakers. Personally, I would go in this direction if I really wanted to buy into the app-controlled lighting space. The Belkin solution is called WeMo and it is much closer to home automation in that you can get power sockets as well that can be controlled by the app plus proper light switches (electrician required) and motion sensing detectors. But even then, I probably wouldn’t do that. It’s just not truly necessary unless you live in a very big house.

At the end of the day, the outlay is massive for what is essentially a dimmable light controlled by your phone. Again, happy to acknowledge the bulbs last decades, but still, expensive is expensive, especially when the speaker is sub-par and the Bluetooth is patchy.

Interesting idea, but lacking execution.

RRP $129.99 (Pulse Solo). For further information or to buy online.

The new winter 2015 trend: Hamptons Hardware

There’s something about Beacon Lighting‘s winter 2015 trend, Hamptons Hardware, that I just love. Combining the coastal, textural and soft hues of the Hamptons, with the masculine and monochromatic palette of Hardware, the new season look is perfect for creating a cozy winter retreat.

Create the look at home with dark colours and lustrous finishes like rust, bronze and matt black, paired with oversized lights (like the ones below) to add instant drama and impact.

W15_CATENA_WHT
Catena Pendant, $299

The Catena Pendant takes inspiration from an industrial style but shows a more contemporary form with the smooth finish of its stunning white shade, paired with a grey globe cage.

W15_MANOR_V2
Manor Pendant Range. 3 light bar pendant frame, $199. Coolie Shades, $50 each.

The Manor Pendant Range encourages you to express your creativity and create your own industrial style by mixing and matching looks from Beacon’s extensive range of shades, decorative cages and industrial globes.

Roto Fan, $349
Roto Fan, $349

Matte black is a must have for this look as it makes a real impact against glossy benches and surfaces. The simple and refined Roto Ceiling Fan in black is great for adding drama to neutral colours.

Harvest Pendant, $299
Harvest Pendant, $299

The Harvest Pendant blurs the lines between old and new with its rust finish, chain hardware suspension and intricate wire cage detailing.

Nuvo Table Lamp, $149

Introduce a touch of rustic beach house with the Nuvo Table lamp. Little touches make a big impact and using lamps is a great way to instantly update a room.

Big is definitely better in this look, as seen in the oversized architectural boldness of the Southampton Pendants in antique black.

How to style your bedroom: Jen’s step by step guide

Sponsored by Sleepmaker

In part one, we showed you how getting the right bed and mattress is key to a great night’s sleep and the foundation of your restful bedroom, But there’s so much more to a beautiful sanctuary than that! Here are my top tips for styling your bedroom.

Image: Mrs Darcy
Image: Mrs Darcy

By your bedside

Bedside tables are pretty much the second most important furniture choice for your bedroom. There are few people who don’t need somewhere for their glass of water or morning coffee, book, alarm clock (who am I kidding, mobile phone!), book, watch, and so it goes on!

There are several key considerations with your bedsides. First, make sure the height is right for your bed. You don’t want to have to reach up or down to grab what you need half asleep. It will also look odd if your bedside is too high or low.

Image: King Furniture
Image: King Furniture

When it comes to matching or not, that’s a decision for you. Many people prefer the balanced, symmetrical look of two identical bedsides, but it isn’t the only option. I have seen many examples of two different, but equally fabulous bedside tables, adding interest and character. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

Think carefully about how much storage you need and how tidy you are. I, for example, keep a pretty minimalist bedside: book, coffee cup, lamp, and that’s about it. My husband, on the other hand, well, that’s an argument I don’t need to get into again! But suffice to say he has a lot of stuff by his bed. I would never even consider bedsides for us without drawers ever again (been there, lived to see the mess and dust accumulate). Some bedsides even have cupboards (great for those things that won’t fit in a small drawer like piles of magazines, headphones, iPads, need I go on?). Consider the width of the bedsides too, and make sure there’s enough room for them to breathe with a gap either side. There’s nothing worse than wedging bedside-bed-bedside into a narrow room.

Lamps

Bedside lamps are another essential because nobody wants to get out of bed once they’ve got comfortable to turn off the light. Mood lighting from lamps rather than overheads is also an important part of winding down to a restful night’s sleep. You can make a real statement with your lamps so they can be just as much decorative as they are practical. Make sure the width and height of the lamps and their shades (if they have them) is right for your bed and bedsides. Think outside the box here too: lamps not necessarily designed for bedsides can make a real statement. Pendant lights, as seen all too often on The Block, hanging either side of the bed, are another trend and give you extra space and less to dust on your bedside!

Linen

Linen is another very personal choice and somewhere you can really have fun. You can either go for something really striking and bold which becomes a feature in itself, or something more subtle. I don’t think either is particularly on trend and both are popular. Brands like Aura and Kip & Co are great for high impact quilt sets. The textural, deliberately creased look of linen works well without pattern and with soft, muted colours or neutrals. Try brands like Hale Mercantile Co and Major Minor.

AURA by Tracie Ellis

Decorative cushions

It seems it’s something men and women will never agree on, but I’m a great believer in the decorative cushion to finish off your bed. No, you don’t actually use them for anything, but they’re a great way to inject colour, pattern and texture, especially if you’ve opted for plainer linen. It’s a low commitment and low-cost way to include the latest trends in your bedroom too. Consider at ottoman at the bottom of your bed, if you have the space, to store them when you go to bed. You can also sit on it to put your shoes on!

Bedheads

If there’s one trend that’s taken off in bedrooms in the last couple of years it’s bedheads, specifically upholstered ones. Not only are they comfortable to sit up against but they look great too and can make a real feature of your bed. The great thing is, you can invest in a high quality ensemble that lasts you years and change the bedhead relatively frequently if your tastes change or you, for example, move house.

Image: Mexsii
Image: Mexsii

Somewhere to put your clothes

It’s very unlikely there’ll be a time when you don’t have some of your clothes out, whether it’s that day’s discarded outfit or tomorrow’s, ready for the morning. For this reason, one great chair is the perfect addition to a corner of your bedroom. Garments look much better draped over a chair than in a pile on the floor.

Image: Curious Grace

Art

Most rooms cry out for a bit of art on the walls and bedrooms are no exception. That said, in my own, due to having a bold patterned wallpaper and a statement upholstered linen bedhead in a reasonably small room, I don’t think it necessary. If you are hanging art and it’s above your bed, please make sure it is safely fixed to the wall as the last thing you want is a heavy frame falling on your head in the night! Less risky options are lightweight canvas art or the popular juju feather hats.

Rugs

If you have hard floors, rugs are always nice in the bedroom, not least to have something soft underfoot when you get out of bed. A round rug is a nice option to break up a room which is often full of rectangles (bed, bedhead, walls, bedsides, art).

Where to spend vs. save: an interior designer’s view

By Oliver Davis

The skill set required of an interior designer is very broad. Aside from all the obvious things (design acumen, drawing skills, encyclopedic knowledge of product lines, project management) something often overlooked as a core competency in this industry is the ability to direct spending appropriately. You see, no project, regardless of how grand or elegant, has an infinite budget, and many of my highest spending clients still have to agonise over decisions on where to spend money and where to save it without compromising on aesthetics. Below is my guide to how to achieve the look of a high-end fit out by prioritising your budget allocation on certain items.

Where to spend

Rugs: Rugs are always my starting point when decorating a living space or bedroom. They act as a foundation piece upon which to layer the colours and materials of everything else in the room. Selecting the right one is vital, and can be expensive. Formal spaces require something hand-knotted in wool and silk, with other natural fibre options including nettle, hemp or aloe. A cheaper option for less formal spaces, and one that I rely on repeatedly because I love the look, is sisal. It is more durable and feels textured under the feet, whilst still being soft enough for the kids to play on.

Photo: Decoryourhouse.com
Photo: Decoryourhouse.com

Lighting: A natural focal point of any room, lighting is not a place to skimp. The artisanal quality of handmade lighting can be breathtaking, and can completely transform the vibe of a space. I love big table lamps with bases in fine natural materials, such as woven leather or alabaster, and I always go for silk lampshades and diffusers. Coach lanterns in glass and metal make for impressive pendant or sconce fittings, as does anything in crystal.

Photo: Wisemanandgale.com
Photo: Wisemanandgale.com

Feature cushions: Abundant scatter cushions are vital for sofas, armchairs and beds, but can become expensive when fabric is purchased by the metre. Earlier this year, I had a client who held off ordering cushions until the project budget was almost drained, so I had the majority of them made in a cheaper, neutral fabric and then chose something very special for two or three feature cushions. These caught the eye with colour accents and a stunning textured material, and the overall effect was very impressive.

Photo: cottages-gardens.com
Photo: cottages-gardens.com

An interior designer: It may sound crazy, but sometimes paying an interior designer can actually save you money overall. Designers can offer access to those elusive trade-only suppliers, who represent a whole new world of product options that aren’t available to the general public. Many also have good relationships with high street retailers and may be able to negotiate a discount on certain items. Above all else though, they can offer a big picture vision for your home and help you to avoid the trap of ending up with a collection of hotchpotch products that looked great in the showroom but somehow don’t work together in your space.

Where to save

Beds: Many clients assume it will be necessary to trawl through designer showrooms and purchase expensive bedframes for their home. But if you want something that looks even more refined and is a fraction of the price, purchase a simple mattress and base ensemble, and dress it up with a separate bedhead and valance. For a contemporary but elegant look, I go for square, upholstered bedheads set quite high on the wall, sometimes with visible nail head detail around the edges.

Photo: kyliefrierson.com
Photo: kyliefrierson.com

Coffee tables/consoles/dining tables: When your budget is tight, the trick is to find hard furnishings that are relatively inexpensive but still well made. Many people resort to replica designer furniture, which often looks cheap and doesn’t stand the test of time. I recommend instead visiting some of those larger warehouses that stock imported 19th Century antique furnishings from Japan and China. For very reasonable prices you can find products that are beautifully restored and quite neutral in their design aesthetic. Just steer clear of anything too decorative and detailed unless that is the look you are going for. Bonus points for incorporating genuine antiques into your contemporary space!

Photo: wabisabi-style.blogspot.co.uk
Photo: wabisabi-style.blogspot.co.uk

Raw materials: I once received an amusing call from a client ordering me to call off the search for marble slabs, as she’d just dropped into a small showroom having a liquidation sale and talked the salesperson into selling her enough gorgeous Carrara marble to do her kitchen, the counters in both her bathrooms, as well as the cabinetry in her living room, all for $500! Don’t be afraid to inquire about a bulk discount if your project requires re-flooring, tiling or cabinetry.

Photo: Oliver Davis Design

Decorative accessories: With the rise of online retail, you have at your fingertips an overwhelming choice of bowls, trays, vases and jugs that won’t break the bank. Alternatively, you might like to peruse vintage shops and estate auctions, where it’s highly likely you’ll stumble upon a few affordable gems. This is your opportunity to finish off the space in a way that truly expresses who you are and what you like.

The Block’s Josh and Jenna release designer lamp range

As someone who gets excited by anything remotely The Block related, I was very happy to hear that former contestants Josh and Jenna were releasing a range of designer lamps for Beacon Lighting. And I was even happier to see that these lamps actually looked fantastic!

As two-time stars of The Block (and now brand ambassadors for Beacon Lighting) Josh and Jenna are experts at using lamps as an easy and affordable way to update a room with the latest trends. Their first release, for the exclusive Josh & Jenna range, really encapsulates this, through their love of transforming raw materials such as copper, cork and concrete into contemporary pieces that are right on trend.

Stoic
Stoic Table Lamp

My favourite has to be the Stoic Table Lamp ($149), which is a combination of the earthiness of concrete, the elegance of smoked or clear glass and the enticing glow of an exposed bulb. This perfectly formed, functional statement lamp is a fresh take on classic industrial style, and is a great accessory for contemporary décor.

Raika
Raika Table Lamp

The Raika Table Lamp ($249), which can also be used as a pendant, is another style I’m obsessing over. Styled with a cork decorative surround and amber glass, it embraces this winter’s more muted colour palette and imbues a room’s décor with earthy character and eco-chic sensitivity.

Also in this range and stunning in their own right, are the Kooper Floor Lamp ($349) and Edison Table Lamp ($89.95). Shop instore or online here.

5 great lamps under $200

I don’t know about you but I love lamp lighting in the cooler months to create a much cosier vibe than overheads. I picked five favourites for all tastes that won’t break the bank at under $200.

Empirical Style’s Australian designed and made cage lights are available in pretty much any colour combo of cage and cord you can imagine, with many optional extras such as dimmers. You can safely use this as a plug-in lamp and put it on your bedside, or anywhere you fancy really! From $177.50.

Cage-light-cloth-cord_2539-700x1050

You can never have too many pops of shiny gold in your interiors if you ask me, and this Audrey lamp from Beacon Lighting is a bargain at $149.

Freedom are KILLING IT in the lamp stakes this season. Among my favourites is the Metro Table Lamp in copper, $149.

Also check out the Penny ($49.95) which comes in dusty blue or antique white.

Vintage-Lamps-On-1-418

If your style’s more classic, I think the Bloomingdale, from Oz Design Furniture, ($149) looks a lot more expensive than it is and would suit many rooms and styles of interior.

Hand turned timber lamps, made in Sydney

I love the warmth of timber and its natural quirks and imperfections, so these Australian hand turned lamps from Wildwood Designs really caught my eye.

“Each piece is unique to us and has been lovingly hand turned by our local wood turner who was thrown out of TAFE on the first day of a wood turning course because he turned up with a telegraph pole,” laughs Wildwood’s Juliet Barr.

Beacon upping their lighting game

Good, affordable lighting can be hard to come across in this country. If you want to buy online, even harder. I’ve heard Bunnings have some cool stuff going on at the moment, which I must check out, and I’ve been pretty impressed with Beacon too, having seen a lot of their stuff on The Block. What do you think of their latest limited edition Stockholm range, which is only available online? It’s all made from natural timber.

These  natural wood pendants are $795.
