Scandinavian style: Doors integral say Norsu Interiors

It’s not something we tend to think much about but a beautiful door can be just the finishing touch a room needs say Scandi interior decorator and renovators Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier, of Norsu Interiors. “You should be able to tell a lot about a space by its doors. They’re the first thing you see when you enter a room and, if closed, the last thing you see when you leave. If your room has a design story, then the doors are its cover and in this case, you should definitely be able to judge a book by its cover,” says Nat who carried out a beautiful renovation her 1920’s Melbourne bungalow recently.

Create a grand entrance
“One of the best things I did when renovating my home was to open up the hallway. The Scandi aesthetic is open and full of light, so a small corridor just wasn’t going to work. This new space created the opportunity to make a big statement with my doors,” says Nat of her double entrance front doors, painted in Dulux Vivid White.

“Simple elegance is key to the trend, so making a statement with your choice of doors relies on the detail. The deep carved vertical panel motifs add texture and shadow without being too dramatic,” says Nat who finished the pair of doors with Buster and Punch handles. “I set them on a background of Dulux Tranquil Retreat painted walls that helps them really stand out,” says Nat.

Keep the look consistent
“Beautiful interiors rely on having a strong design story that is executed consistently throughout your home. This ensures that the eyes can wander calmly from space to space without any unexpected surprises,” says Nat who says that interior doors should complement exterior ones. “A good trick for doing this well in a Scandi home is to slightly pare back the motifs of the front door with a simpler profile inside,” says Nat who selected brass interior door hardware too. “That material choice was picked out in fittings and furnishings including our tap ware and lighting,” says Nat further emphasising the importance of consistency in design.

Door to door design
“If we think of the door as the cover of your design story, then it follows that you should ensure it is represented in your space. Door frames, picture rails and skirting boards all provide opportunities to add more texture to the home through the use of carved and embossed profiles,” says Nat who used mouldings throughout the house alongside soft grey and pink paint colours on the walls for subtle contrast.

“While getting the Scandi style goes beyond door choice, they are a great place to start thinking about how you are going to construct your vision and some of the core elements that are going to define it. Whether you’re going for the original 1950’s aesthetic, a more modern interpretation, or an entirely bespoke twist on the design, make sure your home opens the door to your personal Scandi style.”

Real reno: Alexandria factory conversion comes together

This beautiful factory-conversion in Alexandria was designed by Laura Downie of Studio 1 Interiors. The design brief was simple; the Collier Family had a newly renovated house but in their words, “it just didn’t quite feel finished”.

“This family’s dilemma is one I come across quite regularly,” says Laura. “Following the renovation of their home, often people don’t quite know how to finish it. Either their previous furniture doesn’t quite seem right in the new space or they’re afraid to buy anything new which won’t go with their new reno and spoil it!”

The result is a modern, functional space that showcases the simplicity and clean lines of Scandinavian design. Yet the soft colour palette and natural finishings (think a mix of timbers, rattan and wool) create a cosy family home with plenty of personality.

Art from Mondocherry and Anya Brock helped inject some colour into the open plan living and dining space. The colour palette of both works influenced the soft furnishing choices and the subtle blue hues which continue throughout the home, creating a wonderful sense of flow.

A huge rattan pendant from Ahoy Trader and the spirit rug from Indigo Love helped zone the dining space and make it cosy in the evening.

The clients wanted their master bedroom to be a real sanctuary. In this room the blue hues continue in an artwork from Penny Farthing Design House in Balmain. Fresh bed linen and side lamps, plus the addition of hanging plants and a large wool rug under the bed help to soften the timber tones of the floor and bedroom furniture.

A beautiful desk space where the lady of the house can write, do her make-up or just take a moment to pause before the day starts was also incorporated into the master bedroom. Laura selected the Ethnicraft Oak PC console from ClickOn Furniture and finished off the look with an oversized round mirror.

“Laura was great. We’d recently renovated our house but just couldn’t get our act together to make it look like a home,” says the client, Elissa Collier. “She helped us turn our space into a beautiful and functional home. She helped us purchase products that worked with our own style and just we love it.”

Reno Addict’s Lauren Ellis shares her Christmas table setting

With ice-cold winters, it’s little surprise that Scandinavians know how to create swoon-worthy interiors for Christmas – and the wonderful news is the crisp, minimalistic look is easy to replicate!

I already had most of the decorations at home, and managed to pull this Scandi-inspired table setting together for under $100. So, with Christmas now just an exciting few weeks away, here’s a peek at how my family will be dining this Christmas, and a few tips to help you achieve the look at home.

Keep it elegant and understated, by opting for a monochrome palette. Group decorations in uneven numbers and add touches of gold or silver for a festive touch.

Ditch the tinsel and add a little sparkle with gold ribbon, copper twinkle lights and candleholders.

Make your guests feel extra special, with personalised name tags and plates wrapped up like presents.

Skip the iron and crumple your linen to add texture to your table setting.

A handmade pine wreath makes a beautiful statement, as does the greenery on the table.

SHELF/LIFE release their first in-house product, the planter

After seven years on the retail side of good design, aesthetics, function and sustainability, SHELF/LIFE have released their first product, a range of Oslo hanging planters.

Shelf/Life planters styled by Vanessa Colyer Tay

Designed by husband and wife, Jess and Brendan Ibbett, the duo had always intended to feature their own work amongst other great independent makers and designers. “Now that we are solely online (they closed their Surry Hills shop in 2013) I have freed up time to focus on being creative again,” explains Jess. “With this renewed focus, the Oslo hanging planters are a new direction for SHELF/LIFE as we get back to what we enjoy most.”

Coming in three designs, the Oslo hanging planters (which retail for $135 each) are made from locally cut and powder-coated metal frames. With all metalwork completed by Brendan by hand, each piece is then passed onto Jess, who hand-assembles and finishes them with natural cotton rope, a hand-stamped/stitched leather tag and a hand-rolled brass ring.

Alisa and Lysandra add furniture designer to their resume

They may have been known as The Block’s kitchen and bathroom queens, but twins Alisa and Lysandra Fraser are taking their design flair to another area of the home, creating a four piece bedroom suite exclusively for Forty Winks.

Asta by Alisa and Lysandra 3

“The bedroom is such an integral part of our living and it’s the one room where we spend more than a third of our life resting, sleeping, rejuvenating and connecting,” explains Alisa. “So we were excited to design a bedroom range that marries flexibility, innovation, and our design style!”

Asta Suite - Bedside Table

Entitled Asta by Alisa and Lysandra, the Scandinavian inspired, Australian made suite features a queen bed, two bedside tables and a tallboy. Combining the rawness of timber mixed with the softness of fabric and the elegance of rose copper, the end result is contemporary, sophisticated and timeless.

“These days more than ever, bedrooms are getting updated every few years,” says Lysandra. “Taking that into consideration we were intentional with designing a bedroom suite that is dateless and incredibly flexible with complementing multiple interiors styles and trends. We offer customers the ability to choose between colours and the option to remove the rose copper element if they wish. The entire bedroom suite can also be adapted for a kids bedroom!”

Asta Suite - Tallboy

Veterans when it comes to designing and styling, Asta by Alisa and Lysandra now joins a long list of ventures; with the sisters continuing to run their successful styling business and online shop. So with all this experience, I would be remiss not to ask the newly anointed bedroom queens some decorating advice! “Creating a mood board is important,” explains Alisa. “Start with your hero pieces — your bed and side tables, and then one by one add other stylistic elements such as wall colour, rugs and accessories. Ideally, your bedroom should pass the ‘Sunday morning test’. It should entice you to stay in bed until midday, enjoying more than one cup of coffee, reading, listening to music and chilling out. Sure, if you have children that can be a far-fetched dream, but if they want to join you too, you know you have done a great job of styling your bedroom.”

Asta by Alisa and Lysandra is now available at participating Forty Winks stores for a limited time only. For more information.

Scandi-inspired timber and marble furniture designed in Melbourne

Inspired by the Scandinavian mantra ‘Buy once, buy well,’ online furniture business Harpers Project, was born.

Harpers_Project_0063_Full

With a love of the clean raw timber used in Scandinavian furniture and the timeless versatility of marble favoured by the Europeans, Harpers Project decided to create a range of marble furniture and raw timber pieces that reflected current furniture trends. “We are a lifestyle brand that was created to bring people a collaboration of cutting edge timber and marble pieces that bring life to interior spaces,” explains Nathan Jackson, director of sales and marketing. “We use 100% authentic marble across the entire collection and all the timber we use stems from Hardwood, made in an eco-friendly manner.”

Harpers_Project_0090_Full

All designed in Melbourne, the family run business began in 2014 with the goal of bringing aspirational designs into the homes of people — much like themselves — who could previously not afford them. Selling everything from coffee tables and dining chairs to sofas and stools, the furniture is raw, natural, minimal and one-of-a-kind. “We believe that each piece has its own unique characteristics that can only come from handmade furniture,” says Nathan. “Proudly, our furniture is not mass-produced in large factories. It is all delicately handmade by highly experienced carpenters.”

Harpers_Project_0150_Full

Gaining inspiration from everything — from nature through to fashion — the design process is constantly evolving. “For us the design process starts from the moment we wake up and never really ends. We gain inspiration from the natural elements of life and aspects of fashion and use that to develop pieces that are versatile enough to fit into different design spaces. Once our designs are sketched we follow them through the entire process right up until they are delivered to our customers.”

Harpers_Project_0056_Full

Currently working on a new collection, it will be launching online next month. However until then, you can shop their current pieces online, with all their products being shipped nationwide in Australia, Untied States and Singapore.

Huset on why you should shop original not replica

Wanting to bring high-quality, original design pieces to Australia, brothers Ryan, Charlie and Brett Parnham opened Huset in 2012.

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 12.52.06 pm

With both a showroom in Cheltenham, Victoria (20 minutes south of Melbourne) and an online store; Huset stock original furniture from around the world, including TON, Normann Copenhagen and Brokis. With a strong anti-replica stance, the brothers came into business wanting to give the high-end furniture space a good shake up, with a great range of products and exceptional service. “Huset is a proud supplier of original furniture,” explains Ryan. “That meaning it is manufactured under licence by the designer. Most of our manufacturers are located in Europe and have been around for many years, TON for example have been around since 1861!”

Also engaging various artists as in store pop up guests, Huset are particularly interested in giving global designers an Australian audience. “Our biggest thing is giving our designers a chance to display their wares, reach a greater audience and be enjoyed by people Australia wide,” says Ryan. “Products like the hand blown glass range by Brokis definitely blew our minds. We loved it, so why wouldn’t we want everyone else to enjoy it? That’s what we are about and where our inspiration comes from.”

stockholm-danish-scandi-table

In a world that is rife with replica furniture it can be tempting to go for the cheaper version, especially if from a quick glance it looks the same. But the brothers are vehemently against it, and here’s why: “You really can’t compare originals to replicas,” explains Ryan. “They are worlds apart in terms of quality, and sometimes they look worlds apart in their aesthetic. An original piece will stand the test of time. Something to pass down to the next generation to be enjoyed for years to come. A replica will eventually break and end up in your hard rubbish.”

Shadows-Pendants

Hoping to continue to import original pieces, as well as focusing on developing their Australian made range, Huset’s future looks bright. “We know we produce great stuff right here at home and want to work with more designers and craftsmen locally,” says Ryan. “We are working closely with local Melbourne design firm Bent Design Studio to develop a range of furniture to meet the local market’s demands and help keep the jobs here. Stay tuned for the next big thing from us and we hope you will love it as much as we do.”
