Appliances Kitchens RENO ADDICT The Block

Olivia visits The Block’s kitchens and shares her opinion and all the product details

So I’ll let you in on a little secret. A couple of hours before The Block reveals air, we get the photos of all the rooms. The problem is, we don’t get the judges’ comments, so I spend a good 30 minutes trying to decipher who wins. I must say I’m normally pretty accurate — though I will admit I did not see Josh and Charlotte’s 30/30 score for their master bedroom coming!

But my guessing game went into overdrive last week, when I got to see The Block’s kitchens in the flesh (days prior to the reveal). Judge Shaynna Blaze led the tour, and though I attempted on countless occasions to get her opinion out of her, she kept mum (you should be proud, Channel 9)!

Shaynna and I

So below are all my views and all the product details, should you wish to try and replicate the kitchens in your own home.

Ayden and Jess: Modern traditional

Looking at the kitchen alone and ignoring how it fitted into the surrounding space, it was my favourite. I liked pretty much all of it bar the glass-fronted cabinets. I just don’t see them as realistic. People have mismatched dinnerware; it just seems so messy!

H3_R8_JA_kitchen39

On-trend and functional, the profiled cabinetry in a Stone Grey brought an element of sophistication and the benchtop choice of Silestone Lyra added a natural feel to the classically styled kitchen. Designed and built to entertain, Jess and Ayden opted for Electrolux appliances throughout the kitchen, as well as Breville small appliances and Oliveri taps and sinks.

Dea and Darren: Urban glam

While I later found out how different my opinion was to the judges, the Double Ds produced my second favourite kitchen. And if you looked at the space as a whole (so the kitchen, living and dining as one), well then it shot straight to my favourite. Yes, the ‘goalposts’ were weird, but it was the only townhouse that actually had open plan living.

These 'goal posts' got a LOT of mentions and not in a good way!

The kitchen is really the social hub of the home, executed through smart and functional design without compromising on style (though that mosaic tile splashback was a bit OTT). With Silestone benchtops in Cemento Spa and Pulsar, the appliances included an integrated Vintec Wine Fridge, a Bosch 762 litre French Door Fridge, a Bosch warming drawer, Oliveri sinks and taps and Breville small appliances.

Tim and Anastasia: Modern monochrome

I found Tim and Anastasia’s kitchen layout quite bizarre, what with it being almost like two galley kitchens attached in an L-shape. Standing in it was very cramped, though that said we were 50 or so people there! However, what I did really like was how they connected their kitchen to the terrace with bi-fold windows; perfect for indoor-outdoor living.

The Block in Melbourne

Using contrasting colours and textures of black and white and gloss and matt, the kitchen focused on modern elements like handle-less cabinetry and used soft greys — of the Silestone benchtops in Lagoon — to help balance the monochromatic scheme. Appliances included the Delonghi oven and built-in combination microwave, with a Samsung 636 litre fridge, Breville small appliances and Oliveri taps and sinks.

Josh and Charlotte: Minimalist

I totally agreed with the judges on this one. In person, I couldn’t get over the huge blank space behind the timber bench. It looked so unfinished and cold. Josh and Charlotte’s style is minimalism — which can be great — but I think this time it was taken too far.

The Block in Melbourne

Using crisp white cabinetry, offset by a raised cafe style timber bench and Titanium drawer fronts, the kitchen also included subtle marbling in the Silestone benchtop in Helix. To complement this, Josh and Charlotte used Fisher & Paykel appliances, with an integrated fridge and a gas and ceramic cook top, Breville small appliances and Oliveri sinks and taps.

The Block in Melbourne

Finally, a special thanks to The Good Guys for flying me to Melbourne and giving me a behind the scenes look at The Block. I loved it!

Get restaurant quality pizzas at home

Don’t even get me started on my love of pizza. If I could eat that and pasta every day I would be one happy woman. But for cost and arguably more importantly health reasons, that’s not really a viable option… or is it?!

Justin North recipe
Introducing Breville’s Food Thinkers’ pizza recipe collection (all available online for free!), which features 14 unique and delicious ideas from Australian stars of the pizza world, including 2014 World Pizza Champion Johnny Di Francesco from 400 Gradi Melbourne and celebrity chef Pete Evans.

Cooked using the Breville Crispy Crust stone baked pizza oven (I want one of these so bad!) all pizzas can be made in minutes, with toppings ranging from: the classic Margherita by Johnny di Francesco, sweet potato with Spanish onion and goat’s cheese by Justin North of Hotel Centennial, Sydney, a paleo chilli prawn pizza with salsa verde from Pete Evans, and grilled zucchini, salami and mozzarella by Roberto Taffuri from Cavallino, Terrey Hills.

pizza-margherita

As domestic ovens don’t reach the required temperature, it is near to impossible to make a perfect pizza at home. Yet with the Crispy Crust stone baked pizza oven, which reaches temperature highs of 350°C (compared to an oven’s 240°C) it can mimic the unique cooking environment of a traditional brick pizza oven.

The Crispy Crust stone baked pizza oven makes it easy to cook authentic pizza at home in as little as five minutes, promising delicious pizza without the fast food nasties every time. RRP $169.95.

Editorial assistant Olivia cooks pizza with Pete Evans and Breville

It’s in my DNA to be a pizza fanatic (yes I’m quarter Italian can’t you tell from my ghostly white olive skin?!) so when Breville asked me if I’d like to get ‘hot & crispy with Pete Evans’ (their words not mine), I wasn’t going to say no.

photo copy 2

What ‘hot and crispy’ turned out to mean was cooking pizza with Breville’s Crispy Crust stone baked pizza oven. First, My Kitchen Rules judge Pete demonstrated, then we attempted to copy. All up we made two pizzas: a chilli prawn, then the more indulgent pear and frangipane.

photo 2

Using the Crispy Crust we were able to cook our pizza at a whopping 350 degrees, meaning you could get the crispy crusts that are impossible to achieve in a regular household oven where the maximum temperature is in the 200s.

The Crispy Crust also features a viewing window, which allows you to monitor the pizza without opening the lid and losing heat. It also automatically adjusts the temperature of the oven, depending on your pizza base’s thickness.

The Crispy Crust is a 12-inch ceramic pizza stone that has dual heating elements, top and bottom.

Five appliances you (or more accurately, I) didn’t know existed

I live in a little bubble. It’s warm and cosy. There is a PlayStation in it, and a TV, and a laptop. I have a frying pan as well, a toaster and a kettle… I could go on, but you get the point. I have all the basics required to live a rather simple but entertaining life. Then an esteemed colleague of mine started this blog, Appliance Addict, and my mind was progressively blown as weird objects trying to pretend to be appliances landed in our apartment.

To be fair, they are actually appliances, they’re not just moonlighting. Which would be pretty odd – an inanimate object moonlighting as an electrical appliance. The news media would be all over that on a slow news day. It was more my appliance innocence, not realising that a) half of these tasks could be done at all, let alone with a specific appliance and b) anyone actually needed to do these tasks.

Breville Original ‘74 jaffle maker is retro groovy… or something like that

This one was way before my time – almost 10 years, but I still grew up with a jaffle maker and seeing one again brings back memories filled with delicious ingredients. It also brings back memories of frustration and burning smells, but that could have been more to do with the chef than the jaffle maker.

Breville Original 74 Jaffles

Back in the late 80s and 90s my mother used to have a gigantic plastic jaffle maker, such was the style of the time. One day it vanished, and I’m not surprised. It can’t have been that sturdy, and we used it a lot, mainly for putting tinned spaghetti in a jaffle or spiced mince. Those jaffles were pretty fantastic, but it also took a keen eye and some talent to make sure the jaffle was perfectly made with no splits or spills. We were one of apparently more than six million households which own jaffle makers.

Sous vide: the chef’s best kept secret, now available at home

Last week, I was lucky enough to attend a demonstration of Breville’s latest kitchen gadget, the Sous Vide Supreme, by My Kitchen Rules judge and celebrity chef Pete Evans (yes, he of the activated almonds) at Sydney Seafood School. It was my first visit to the fish markets, where the school is based, and wow, what a fascinating experience! A great way to get the mind buzzing with fish and seafood recipe ideas!

Breville Sous Vide Supreme BSV600

So, sous vide. Had I heard of it? No. But then we all know I’m not much of a masterchef and my kitchen certainly doesn’t rule. Literally translated from the French, it means ‘under vacuum’. I’d heard of boil in the bag fish (takes me back to my student days, with mashed potatoes please) but this is something way more sophisticated and, Pete assures us, used by almost every top restaurant in the world. Who knew? When you order that perfectly done steak, the reason it’s so perfect is because it’s been cooked in a plastic bag in a temperature controlled bath of water, then finished off with a flash in the pan! Fascinating! Some would call it cheating. I’d call it smart.

New Breville Sherbet range is a bit of all white

I assumed the new Breville Sherbet range might be yellow. Sherbet always makes me think of lemon sherbet lollies (is it just me?). It is in fact white, but with a pearlescent finish. In a sea of coloured kitchen appliances I guess you have to find a way to stand out and maybe that’s by keeping it simple!

BREVILLE-LIFESTYLE-sherbet

Breville say: “These Scandinavian-like finishes make eye-catching additions to white on white kitchens and deliver dynamic contrast to stronger colour schemes.”

The latest colourful kitchen appliances

The trend for colourful kitchen appliances isn’t going anywhere any time soon and I have to admit, they’re becoming quite tempting! Red is apparently the best selling colour of these products, but personally, I really don’t like using red in my home AT ALL. Clearly I’m in the minority!

It’s not just red these days though; there are plenty of colours from pastels to brights, whatever your personal palette. Here’s my roundup of some of the nicest out there at the moment. Which are your favourite?

IconaVintage_AntiaRange

De’Longhi’s latest Icona Vintage collection is inspired by the brand’s Italian heritage and is an extension of their existing 1950-styled Icona range. There’s a set of matching manual coffee machine (RRP $299), kettle (RRP $149) and 2 or 4-slice toaster (RRP $149 & $189) with curved silhouettes, accentuated by 5 new shades which take their colour cues from the 1950s: tan leather, cream and mahogany, olive green, sky blue (pictured) and black velvet. So there’s something for everyone.

Bosch Miracle Blue MUM5 Kitchen Machine MUM54530AU (without accessories)

Later this month, Bosch is introducing pastel colours to its Styline Kitchen range with the MUM5 Kitchen Machines (RRP $699). Two new models will be available in vivid Miracle Blue (pictured above) and cheerful Yellow Passion. They’re complemented by silver and chrome trims, appealing to both classic and contemporary kitchens. Each comes with a stainless steel bowl and accessories, including a fitted lid, continuous shredder, blender, kneading hook, beater, whisk and citrus press.
