Add warmth and energy in your home with terracotta accents

Terracotta, with its earthy and rustic notes, can embrace a home like a warm hug. From subtle hints seen in soft furnishings to statement pieces in the landscaping, terracotta can create an impression at every turn.

According to Henley interior designer, Breahna Harry, introducing terracotta into your home is a great way of creating an inviting environment with a sense of warmth and energy.

Dabble with texture

Texture is your best friend with terracotta. Selecting fixed materials such as natural exposed bricks, matt tiles with a raw edge or rough stone benchtops in terracotta tones are perfect ways of incorporating it into your colour palette.

Don’t be scared of utilising terracotta through fixed materials, have fun with it! You can always use it in small amounts such as decorative wall tiles in the laundry or your kitchen splashback to keep it minimal.

Alternatively, you can incorporate it into your home through décor items. Think décor cushions and throw blankets made from natural materials such as linen in the warmer months to keep it light and airy, and chunky wool knits in the cooler months to create a cosy atmosphere.

Handmade pottery items with organic curves such as vases, jugs, servingware and indoor/outdoor pots also go a long way to creating a naturally relaxed environment.

Terracotta pairings

To achieve terracotta as the standout feature colour in a space, pairing it with subtle warm whites will work well.

For those who are looking to create a bold space, use a peacock as your inspiration. Yes, a peacock. The typical ‘peacock colours’ of beautiful deep blues, greens and purples are the perfect colours to compliment terracotta.

Connecting with nature

Terracotta hues surround us daily through nature: sunrises, sunsets, autumn leaves, the Australian outback, the list is endless. Incorporating a colour of nature such as terracotta into a space creates a natural, earthy atmosphere.

If you love the idea of creating a warm, grounded home then adding terracotta through your home is a great option.

Make a statement with your splashback: the main options

The kitchen is a major focal point in any home, and with countless design and style choices for you to make – from the cabinetry, benchtops to the appliances and fixtures, the splashback should not be forgotten. There is a bounty of colours and materials on offer for your splashback which can add a level of sophistication and focal point to every kitchen.

But how do you decide what to splash on for your splashback?

Below, Heidi Schwieters, senior interior design consultant at Henley, shares her splashback insights and what is catching her eye in 2021.

Tiling it

From sleek subway tile, head-turning hand chiselled Moroccan tile to eye-catching patterned tile, these choices evoke a range of emotions and reactions from the subtle to the loud and proud. With tiles, you can either select a tile that blends in with the cabinetry or choose a tile that will make the kitchen pop. Think about not only what takes your fancy today but what has timeless appeal. I absolutely love the Kit-kat-shaped mosaic tiles with their modern and unique look.  They really add to the kitchen’s dramatic style which I adore. And you can also use grout to play on the tile effect and pattern.

The panache of porcelain

For the ultimate in sophistication, why not consider the impressive extra-large porcelain panel tiles. This splashback choice has an air of opulence to it that is stunning to look at and easy to care for, and as an added bonus there is no need for grout. These panels have a magnificent marble or concrete look, which will complement your cabinetry and will sit perfectly with any choice of colours and kitchen styles. With this panelling, the splashback becomes one of the standout features of the kitchen so you can pare back on other features to allow it to shine.

The real deal

Another splashback material hot on-trend is solid stone. With dozens of choices on offer, this is obviously an extravagant option for your kitchen. At Henely we have many clients who opt to have their Caesarstone benchtop’s match the splashback, creating this dazzling symmetry that is polished and refined.

Going glass

With glass, you can be as bold or as subtle as you wish, showcasing your personality or use the colouring to be the backdrop to other showstoppers in the kitchen. Glass selections eliminate grout which is another huge bonus, for the cleaning aspect. At Henley Design, our current favourite Glass splashbacks are Grey Pebble and Grey Reflection, both are beautiful and are subtle grey beige colours. Leaning themselves to the grey family as well as fitting effortlessly into warmer colour palettes. With Glass splashback we love to find colours that complement the scheme, enabling us to focus and draw the eye to our hero pieces such as the Caesarstone benchtops and laminex cabinetry.

The wonder of a window splashback

Window splashbacks are a simple yet stunning choice that allows natural light to seep throughout the home, bringing the outdoors inside. Being able to look at your outdoor area, with lots of greenery while your cook is such a simple delight that you won’t take for granted.

En suite bathroom: perfecting the day spa vibe

Perfecting your en suite’s design and functionality, as well as adding sophistication, is the ultimate goal to master and conquer. The master en suite needs to be the idyllic getaway after a hectic day, a sanctuary to unwind in and to be pampered in.

But what makes the ultimate master en suite in a home? We asked Henley interior designer, Rebecca Burrows, to give us the lowdown on the en suite heaven.

En suite finesse features

According to Rebecca, ensuites are taking on a spa-inspired feel, promoting an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquility. “Clients want their bathroom to feel like a resort or day spa – a personal retreat, a place to escape. En suites are open and an extension of the bedroom – a stylish sanctuary. The current trend is focusing more on different finishes rather than colour.”

Elevating your en suite

En suites are usually timeless and neutral in colour and the focus is more on the materials and textures used – natural materials and finishes like marble, stone, timber, concrete. Floor to ceiling tiling is still very popular in large format tiles.

Rebecca adds: “You can either choose a subtle patterned tile to use for both floor and wall or choose one tile for floor and a different tile for walls. Using feature tiles to a full wall is the current design trend. Subway tiles are also still popular – try laying them vertical and stacked or vertical and bricked rather than in a traditional horizontal pattern/design.

“Three dimensional tiles like ‘relief’ pattern tiles and textured tiles are also a current trend that add some depth and interest to the space. When using tiles, also think about the grout colour – this is just as important as the selection of what tile to use. Contrast the grout colour with the tile to create more of an impact or to highlight a feature. Choosing a matching grout colour blends in with the tiles and makes the floor or wall look seamless and a consistent colour and finish.

“En suites can be earthy and organic or elegant and glamourous. Luxe and moody or light and airy. No matter what the theme or colour palette, en suites are filled with cold surfaces. Remember to add depth, interest and warmth with either a timber vanity, some soft fluffy towels, decorative lighting, a potted plant or freshly cut greenery.”

Dip your toes in

With an open concept en suite, a freestanding bath is often the main feature or hero of the space. It offers a sense of wellness and it is a place to relax and switch off after a hard day at work.

“A freestanding bath sitting on a podium or step with a floor mounted spout adds dimension to the room and has a real luxe feel. Baths come in all shapes and sizes so don’t be disappointed if you have a small space, you can still achieve a relaxing atmosphere where you can unwind and disconnect,” Rebecca adds.

Keeping it elegant and simple

Simple, uncluttered and minimal are the key ingredients to achieve that day spa feel. Storage is an important feature of any room so vanities, recessed mirrored cabinets and open shelves are all important things to consider.

“Wall mounted or floating vanities are still on trend which create a feeling of space. This style of vanity frees up floor space and makes cleaning simple. Open shelves below or above vanities or tiled shelves in showers are great for storage too or for showcasing personal items,” Rebecca says.

Shower me with style

When it comes to showers, the bigger the better. Double showers with twin showerheads give that day spa aesthetic. Rain head showers are the most popular and these are often paired with a handheld shower rail.

Rebecca adds: “If you are on a budget or looking to update your bathroom, basins and tapware are the easiest thing to transform a bathroom. These are easy and affordable. Countertop basins make a statement that are mounted on top of the benchtop. Nood has a range of statement basins in a range of different shapes, sizes and colours. Tapware becomes a feature when selected in a finish like matte black, brushed nickel, gunmetal and brushed brass. Remember to match showers, accessories, shower drains, waste drains and even door hardware to the same selected finish.”

And don’t forget

Other luxe features of en suites are frameless shower screens, rain head showers, backlit mirrors, underfloor heating and heated towel rails. “Colour and fun can be added with scented candles, storage baskets, towels and potted plants.” Rebecca adds.

Lots of light, preferable natural light is important when designing a bathroom. Task lighting must be planned and designed with thought. Feature lights like decorative sconce lights, LED backlighting, pendants and undershelf lighting are stylish and create a mood.

“Technology and smart bathrooms are becoming the norm in new homes – ie Google Home, sensor-activated toilets that are self-cleaning, seat warmers, integrated lights and integrated speakers while you soak in the bathtub.”

House facades 2018: expert advice on getting it right

The face of your home, the façade, is generated by a mix of colours, materials and textures and sets the scene for your interior selections to follow. But nailing the perfect entrance is a hard act to pull off – particularly when you’re building a brand new home. With so many design choices to make, the decision can become quite overwhelming.

To help guide your decision-making process, we chatted to Henley Design colour consultant Cassandra Lynch about her favourite contemporary facades and her tips on how to create a beautiful street presence.

Be on the lookout for your favourite façade features

When you’re driving down a street and you’re looking for an address, you might just miss the finer details of what makes the home beautiful from the outside. To create your ideal facade, it’s important to find the right balance of style and impact.

“Be on the lookout for images online or get inspiration from classic drive-bys and start handpicking the looks you love so you have some insights into your style before you’re making selections,” says Cassandra. “Pay attention to the materials used, bricks, render, timber or steel, and also take into account the texture of the materials, and colours.”

When it comes to colour, less is more

Selecting the perfect colour scheme is often a balancing act, and with facades, the formula can be a matter of less is best according to Cassandra.

“Grey, black, brick and Colorbond cladding are some of the most popular façade inclusions, as well as James Hardie fibre cement sheets, with texture and timber also featuring as highlights,” she adds.

“Monochromatic colour schemes using a combination of dark grey bricks and contrasting white/light grey renders and matt finish Colorbond roof in either Monument or Surfmist and Aluminum black windows are the colour combinations which people are currently loving,” says Cassandra.

“On the opposite end, we also have the neutral colour scheme which is becoming increasingly popular,” says Cassandra. “Consider using much lighter creamier/beige bricks and complementing them with white and grey renders and light natural stained timber accents.”

Cassandra’s top tips in façade selection

  • Choose a façade to complement the area your house is being built. For example, choose a neutral coastal façade if building near the beach. Utilising cement cladding over natural timbers if you live near the coast is a great idea as the salty sea air will ruin any timber and will be a pain to maintain in the longterm.
  • Take inspiration from your design style. If you are drawn to more traditional or Victorian style furniture with antique furniture, perhaps go for a more traditional façade with decorative mouldings. If you love modern architecture, straight lines and monochromatic colours, choose a modern façade.
  • If building in a new estate, always check the developers design guidelines before falling in love with any specific colours or finishes.

Get the show home look: interior designer tips

If you’re stretched for time and your home needs a little display home style pick me-up, Henley have a few tricks and tips to give your home a fast-tracked makeover.

Set the scene

Make sure kitchen islands and benches are tidy, clean and clear from clutter, and do the same for the dining table, even if it means having a storage box to sort through later. Emma Taylor, Henley’s senior interior designer, adds that guests feel more welcome if it looks like you’ve planned for them: “If you are having people over for lunch or dinner, a set table always looks inviting and creates atmosphere. Set it with placemats and napkins, cutlery and glasses, colour coordinated if possible, to your dining service.”

Clean as you go

In the kitchen, try and have the washing up done and the kitchen as immaculate as can be with just those items you are using for the cooking of your lunch/dinner. Butlers pantries are a perfect “room” to hide away unsightly items and to de-clutter, especially when unexpected visitors drop in.

Hide it

For general storage, fabric lidded boxes can sit on top of one and other and are ideal containers for all those piles of paperwork and bits and pieces that find a home on kitchen benches. There are some gorgeous lacquer and bone boxes that can sit under a coffee table — they are attractive and decorative but hold the most mundane of household items such as TV remotes. “You can get some really useful and practical storage boxes in leather or woven basketry which are perfect for tidying away toys left over from kids’ playtime. Apart from being useful and practical, they look smart too,” says Emma.

Blooming marvelous

Bright, freshly cut flowers are always a beautiful addition to a home and an instant mood pleaser. Emma adds: “I buy a bunch of flowers nearly every weekend and if you look after them properly and change the water daily, and pick the right flower, they can last for up to two weeks. Potted plants are a perfect accessory to smarten up an interior, they add colour and life, and help clean the air too.”

Cushion comforts

“You can never have enough cushions! Make sure they are feather filled and that they are nicely plump – velvets, plaids, felts and linen are all gorgeous fabrics for decorative cushions – prints and patterns combine to dress up or down your chosen living area, they create mood and bring in added texture and warmth.”

With a few makeover shortcuts and tips, your house can be transformed into a display home —  just like Henley’s World of Homes in Upper Point Cook, Berwick Waters and Woodlea (shown in images).

Charity house furnished by Interiors Addict could be yours!

Sponsored by Henley

At the weekend, Henley and Villawood Properties officially opened to the public to inspect the Good Friday Appeal charity auction home. It followed five months and 320,000 collective labour hours from over 400 tradies and suppliers.

It was a huge team effort by Henley, Villawood Properties and the generous trades and suppliers who volunteered their time and services. Year after year, they give it their all to create a stunning family home for one successful bidder to call home. This is all in aid of the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, with the Henley double-storey Emperor 41, situated in Villawood’s boutique Waratah community, selling at a no-reserve auction on Good Friday 30 March – with 100% of the proceeds donated to the appeal.

“It’s our 25th year building and donating houses to the Good Friday Appeal, and the whole team at Henley is enormously proud in being associated with such an iconic event, where the community really comes together for a feel-good cause,” said Henley’s managing director John Harvey.

Nursery furnished by Incy Interiors, GlobeWest, Willow & Wood and The Print Emporium.

To make Henley’s silver anniversary even more special, Interiors Addict was delighted to be asked to be involved. We called on our network of furniture and homewares brands to donate everything from art to sofas and a dining a table! Early Settler, IKEA, GlobeWest, Incy Interiors, Willow & Wood and The Print Emporium didn’t hesitate to give generously, allowing me to choose from their gorgeous stock for the house. And the lucky bidder will get to keep it all. That will make moving day easier!

The home has a spacious open plan kitchen/living/dining room furnished almost entirely by Early Settler. Kitchen cupboards are full of essentials from IKEA, who also furnished the guest suite and theatre, as well providing outdoor dining furniture. In the super sweet nursery, Incy Interiors donated a cot and change table while the rug and chair came from GlobeWest, the bookcase from Willow & Wood, artwork from The Print Emporium and cot mattress from Clarke Rubber.

“This year, we once again have a group of passionate and dedicated trades and suppliers who donate their time and resources in making this extraordinary build happen, some who have contributed to the cause since its inception in 1993 and others who have joined us along the way. Each contribution means so much to us, and adds immeasurable value to the worth of the home,” John added.

Beyond the gorgeous home, the lucky buyer will be moving to a peaceful oasis, surrounded by historic woodlands and conveniently located in close proximity to the Mickleham Town Centre and future primary school, while also in walking distance of the state-of-the art Childcare Centre within the Waratah community, due to open in early 2019.

Theatre furnished by IKEA

“We believe the sense of ‘home’ is so much more than what’s contained within a property’s boundary and we design our all our projects to instill a true sense of community, where people know their neighbours and greet them in the street. The Village Green, a large neighbourhood park with playground, will be integral to this and we’ll have an exciting 12-month calendar of events kicking off just after the auction,” said Rory Costelloe, executive director of Villawood Properties.

“A special thanks this year to Early Settler, IKEA, GlobeWest, Incy Interiors, Willow & Wood and The Print Emporium, who have come on board through Interiors Addict publisher, Jen Bishop, to style the house with all of the donated furniture and accessories included in the auction price.

“This house is packed to the roof with quality inclusions, donations, upgrades and of course, the feel-good factor and we can’t wait to meet its new family who get a beautiful new home with a whole heap of extra value,” he said.

The house is open for inspection every Saturday and Sunday (1-to-3pm) and Wednesdays (5-to-6pm), until 30 March at 13 Harfield Avenue, Mickleham Victoria.

Top 5 tips to make laundry day a breeze

With the average Australian spending at least three hours a week on laundry (three hours?! I am definitely not part of that average), it seems that an intuitive, intelligent and efficient laundry setup is a must.

“Time and style conscious families want a laundry space jam packed with functionality and storage to create the ultimate in laundry layouts,” says Henley designer Micaela Campbell.

Here are some top tips from home builder Henley for creating a beautiful and functional laundry space.

Storage

A laundry without enough storage is like navy without gold, or a cupcake with no icing. To avoid the modern family nightmare, a combination of cupboards, drawers and shelves is a great way to cover all bases. Eliminate clutter by creating custom fit storage for brooms, detergents, dirty laundry and ironing.

Style

Gone are the days when the laundry was a sad combination of a laundry sink and cheap lino/tiles. Benchtops and built-in cabinetry that match or complement your kitchen create a look of consistency and style. Although built-in washing machines aren’t a trend (yet?), cupboards are a far better option than open shelves to keep the laundry looking neat and streamlined.

Details

Floor-to-ceiling feature tiles aren’t just reserved for bathrooms; they can create opulence and stylish function in an often overlooked laundry. Built-in solutions such as washing and ironing hampers will keep the room feeling organised, even when the laundry pile is high. Air dryers are also a chic add-on that saves energy and money, while an extended benchtop can make sorting, folding and stacking a breeze.

Colours

While white is often the go-to colour choice, light greys and teak trimming can add interesting texture and visual appeal. White and stainless steel appliances will pop against hints of colour in the tiles and benchtops.

Store, sort and stack

The laundry doesn’t have to be a tiny cubicle; larger families will benefit from a larger laundry, as the extra space is perfect for storing assorted items from family members (think cricket bats and dirty soccer boots). However, smaller spaces don’t need to skimp on functionality either, with creatively designed cupboards making good use of odd and awkward spaces.

Doing the laundry might not be fun, but it doesn’t have to be an all-day chore either.

Good Friday charity auction: This new home could be yours!

With no reserve set, one lucky family will call this new-build home when it goes under the hammer as part of this year’s Good Friday Appeal for Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. Located in Geelong (Mt Duneed to be precise), the house sits on 599 square metres of land generously donated by Villawood Properties and built by Henley.

Constructed over five months, with more than 400 trades and suppliers donating their time and products, every dollar raised at auction will go to the Good Friday Appeal.

The lounge

“We are thrilled to deliver the Henley and Villawood Properties Charity Home Auction ahead of the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital, and we encourage any new or would-be home buyers to visit the house at an upcoming open for inspection,” says Henley’s managing director Peter Hayes.

Kitchen

“We are humbled by the continued generosity of our suppliers and tradespeople, who, year after year, donate their time to help create a stunning home to be auctioned off. In donating 100 per cent of the proceeds, it means a family has the opportunity to buy a quality house in a beautiful community for a good cause – and for most of us, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to donate such a significant amount of money to charity!” says Peter of the home that is located just 10 minutes from the Geelong CBD and 15 minutes from Victoria’s famed surf beaches.

Master bedroom

The home boasts four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a powder room, north-facing alfresco area, home theatre, study, butler’s pantry and a whopping five living areas! Other details include 40mm Caesarstone bench tops, high ceilings and SMEG stainless steel extra-large appliances. There is also timber-look flooring throughout, premium carpets and polished porcelain tiles plus ducted heating and air-conditioning and a security system.

Ensuite

The bathroom and ensuite both feature double vanities and extra-large showers with semi-frameless glass screens. And with window coverings to the bedrooms and bathrooms, flyscreens, a lock-up garage, clothes line, fencing and professionally landscaped front and rear gardens, the lucky new owner won’t have to do a thing!
