Kara Rosenlund returns to world’s most pinned boathouse

Kara Rosenlund, the Australian stylist and travel photographer who shared Tasmania’s Satellite Island with the world through her images, has returned to the much pinned boathouse and released five limited edition prints for your walls.

Ocean Swim by Kara Rosenlund

Her now iconic 2014 images of the Satellite Island boathouse were published worldwide and the island became a must-visit destination for global travellers who sought to experience it for themselves. Now, five years later, she has returned to the secluded private island to photograph its rugged beauty once again.

“In 2014, I received an invitation to spend time on Satellite Island. I was photographing chapters for my book, Shelter, and had heard whispers about this secret remote island through the grapevine. At the time, it was still a mystery as to who owned it and where it was.

Twinkles by Kara Rosenlund

“I spent three days and nights alone on the island, absorbing the wild nature of this remote place. I would lie awake in the boathouse at night, not wanting to close my eyes and miss a thing.”

This year, she returned with her parents and husband and captured more stunning photographs.

“Watching the world discover Satellite Island has been exhilarating,” Kara says. “It is a place of raw natural beauty and my new print collection celebrates the abstract nature of this wild place on the edge of the earth.”

The new prints (from $290 unframed) are available in four sizes and are limited to 30 of each size. They are hand signed, numbered and dated by Kara.

Three ways to style extra large artworks

Extra large artworks are an effortless way to create an atmosphere of understated luxury in your home.

Assuming that you can fit it through the door, an oversized piece is also an excellent solution for renters looking to add a big impact to plain white walls. Opting for a larger artwork will also help keep the space feeling uncluttered and most importantly, set the mood and tone of the room.

An Interiors Addict favourite and woman of many talents, photographer, stylist and author Kara Rosenlund has just released a new photographic print size option to her online store. To celebrate the launch of her new range, Kara shared with us three fun ways to style an extra large artwork in your home.

1. The lean

“I love the relaxed feel that a photographic work leaning on the wall gives to a room,” says Kara. “You don’t have to worry about hanging it and it gives you the versatility to handle the work like a piece of furniture and move it around the house.”

Kara suggests interchanging your artwork between rooms to lift and enhance the atmosphere depending on the season (or even your mood). An oversized piece can easily be introduced into the bedroom or hallways for some newness.

2. Companion pieces

“Pairing two extra large sized prints increases the visual impact of the works and is an effortless way to create an unforgettable space,” says Kara.

Kara’s big tip is to choose pieces to pair together that stay loyal to the same theme – seascapes, black and whites or landscapes with similar colour tones. This will strengthen your visual message in the room.

3. Make an entrance

Set the tone of your home as soon as you walk through the door with an oversized piece at the entryway.

“In my entryway it’s a rather narrow space, so I selected a vertical oversized piece to emphasise the height, rather than a horizontal work,” adds Kara.

Raw materials shine in Kara Rosenlund’s new kitchen collection

A woman of many talents, photographer, stylist and author Kara Rosenlund has just launched a stylish, earthy lifestyle range – KR Kitchen Collection. Designed by Kara and hand carved in Brisbane, the collection showcases a range of beautiful Australian materials such as Australian White Beech and Tasmanian Blackwood timbers, and hand-knitted Australian merino and cashmere wool.

KR KITCHEN COLLECTION

“The design of my first lifestyle collection is inspired by my kitchen favourites. When I’m not on the road working as a photographer, I’m at home in my kitchen listening to music and cooking for loved ones. I’ve been wanting to create my own kitchen range for so long. When I connected with a local wood carver early this year, I knew it was the time to make it happen,” says Kara.

Kara Rosenlund

“I’m a firm believer in using beautiful and purposeful objects each day to create meaningful rituals within the home. I wanted to design the type of objects you only ever need one of. Each piece in the range is inspired by this philosophy, and created using real craftsmanship and hardwearing materials to last a lifetime and get better with age and use.” The range that is comprised of a lovely mix of items ranging from wooden measuring spoons to a wooden board (we love the rope handle) and a gorgeous pom-pom adorned, hand-knitted tea cosy.

Kara’s career has been an interesting one. The youngest winner of the Canon Australian Institute of Professional Photographer AIPP Photographer of the Year title, Kara has worked as a freelance photographer and stylist for magazines and advertising campaigns, and has had work appear in many exhibitions including a solo show at the Sydney Opera House. After a year-long stint travelling across Australia, in 2015 Kara released the book Shelter: How Australians Live which was inspired by the landscapes and people she encountered on her travels.

Take 5 with Kara Rosenlund

Each week we shine the spotlight on some of Australia’s best designers, artists and stylists and have them share with us what’s making them tick; anything from the best advice they’ve ever received to their favourite holiday destination. Today we chat to Kara Rosenlund, photographer, stylist and author of Shelter — How Australians Live.

kara rosenlund

1. What is your favourite cafe?
The Sourced Grocer in Teneriffe, Brisbane. It is quintessentially QLD with a mix of indoor and outdoor dining, and I can never go past the smashed avo on toast.

2. What is your favourite holiday destination?
Satellite Island, Tasmania, which features in my new book, Shelter — How Australians Live. I just love its remoteness. When I go on holidays I want to feel alone and have a moment to be at one with my thoughts.

3. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Cut once. Measure twice.

4. What’s your go-to recipe?
It’s a chicken and leek pot pie. The recipe is from artist Anita Mertzlin, whom I met when visiting her home for Shelter, hidden away in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. There is lots of thyme which gives the dish an incredible flavour and it makes you look like you’ve tried harder than you really have!

5. What is your piece of furniture you own?
A glass display cabinet which is an old Australian piece I picked up in rural Victoria whilst on the road. It has pride of place in my home and is filled with my ceramics. It’s a piece which has already travelled many miles.

A celebration of quintessentially Australian landscapes and interiors, Shelter spans the vast array of spaces that people call home. From abandoned, decaying cottages to repurposed shipping containers and cliff-top hideaways, the book is a visual feast, documented in Kara’s honest and poignant style.

“Shelter began as a creative idea and quickly evolved into a year-long adventure which saw me travel from one corner of the country to the other – taking in some of the most remote parts of Australia,” explains Kara. “I was welcomed into people’s homes with open arms and relished hearing their stories, which formed the stories accompanying each chapter.”

Kara Rosenlund, Frankie and pavlova at The School’s first birthday

Kara Rosenlund and I (top right)
Kara Rosenlund and I (top right)

There are many reasons why I enjoyed The School’s first birthday celebrations this afternoon. Firstly, I finally got to meet stylist and photographer Kara Rosenlund (and her lovely husband Timothy O) who I’ve been a big fan of for a long time now. They brought their vintage caravan Frankie and all kinds of gorgeous wares, all the way from Queensland. Was lovely to have a peek inside and peruse her great collection of vintage lovelies for sale. And Kara was every bit as genuine and nice as I imagined. I wish I had the time to have done one of her vignette classes this week.

Kara and her caravan are coming to Sydney

I have always wanted to meet Kara Rosenlund, the stylist and owner of Frankie the caravan, from which she runs her Travelling Wares store. Only problem is, she is in up in Queensland. However, this weekend, she will be in Sydney, at Megan Morton’s The School, on both days! She sets off on Wednesday and is bringing Frankie, with lots of lovely wares for sale, with her! I ‘m so not missing this so I’ll be there on the Sunday. If you see me, say hi!

Rosenlund

There’s all sorts of cool stuff happening at The School this weekend on account of it being its first birthday. From 10am to 4pm on both days, go along for a visit, a free pavlova party and a free kids craft class. Find out more at The School’s website.

Learn how to create vignettes from Kara Rosenlund at The School

If you took part in the very first 7 Vignettes, my monthly Instagram photo/styling challenge, you’ll remember the lovely Kara Rosenlund was the guest judge. As well as being very generous with her comments and advice on participants’ efforts, we also saw how AMAZING she is at styling vignettes in her home with the most ordinary of objects (sometimes even chooks!).

And the winner of 7 Vignettes is…

Shelley Ross! (or should we say @shelleyrossxoxo?) CONGRATULATIONS!

Here’s my favourite of her vignettes…

Our judge, stylist Kara Rosenlund, said: “It was such a great week on Instagram; everyone’s commitment and thrill to be be part of such a challenge was really inspiring. It was such a privilege to see into everyone’s homes and lives and read their special and sentimental stories about pieces from their homes and their loved ones.

“Thank you so much to everyone who participated. It brought such an overwhelming sense of community and friendship into the instagram world, I didn’t want it to end.”

There wasn’t even meant to be a prize but we were so impressed we decided to award one! Kara has put together a box of lovely styling treasures for Shelley and I’ll be sending her an Interiors Addict candle.

I must say I was overwhelmed by the success of 7 Vignettes. I’ve run, and taken part in, Instagram photo challenges before, but this one was extra special. There was so much sharing and community. Everyone really encouraged each other and everyone had a go. Some people didn’t even know what a vignette was when we started. Some found out about it on the last day and still managed all 7 vignettes in 24 hours! Amazing! Between us we shared more than 2,000 images! So much enthusiasm, talent and just a lot of great feeling! I had warm fuzzies all week, especially when I kept getting gorgeous little messages like these!

I was so sad it had to end (although I was worrying about the RSI in my right hand from constant scrolling and liking!) I’ve decided to make this a monthly challenge with a new set of words and a new guest judge each time. The next will start on 2 February with the lovely Steve Cordony from Belle magazine. Look out for the new list of words on Instagram. Just keep looking under the #7vignettes hashtag or like Interiors Addict on Facebook so you’ll be sure not to miss it.

The 7 vignettes in 7 days Instagram challenge with stylist Kara Rosenlund

I’m excited to announce Interiors Addict’s latest Instagram challenge: 7 Vignettes in 7 Days!

You can probably guess what this one’s all about, but I’ll spell it out anyway. Each day, from this Saturday, you must snap a vignette inspired by the corresponding word on the list. It’s a bit more interactive than usual because I’m guessing not many people have 7 vignettes in their home or, if they do, they probably don’t fit my list exactly! So it’s time to have some fun and be creative, play stylist, and maybe create some new and lovely focal points in your home!

One of Kara’s vignettes

Not everyone knows what this French word actually means, so I asked super stylist Kara Rosenlund, a veritable queen of the vignette (seriously, she makes it look so easy!), to explain. “A vignette to me is essentially a unique visual short story,” she said. “It’s told through using an arrangement of smaller objects gathered together to tell a tale that is only yours. It can be as simple or as grand as you like; a pile of seashells in different sizes gathered from a distant seaside trip laid out on a shelf, to a Metro ticket, a small plastic tacky Eiffel Tower and a Champagne cork from Paris treasured as souvenirs on a mantle.”

I couldn’t think of anyone better to judge the winner of this competition, which, as always, is just for fun, than Kara.

Not surprisingly, she has vignettes everywhere in her own home, but they’re not just for stylists. “They are super fun and super easy and are generally inexpensive and can be easily rearranged when you feel like a change. Adding a vignette gives you a reason and allows you to display your favourite bits and found collections in a way that tells a story and may remind you of certain things.”
Another of Kara’s vignettes
Kara adds: “On the home front they work really well if you have a difficult area or awkward shelf that really isn’t performing too well (we all have them); arrange a vignette and your eye will be catching the beauty in no time, transforming the drab spot.” There really is no better way to give your space personality and depth, and to reveal something about you.

Kara Rosenlund’s new blog

Kara Rosenlund is awesome. If you don’t already know about her, you need to, so check out her new blog here immediately! The talented Brisbane-based stylist and props buyer (not to mention photographer) just had her divine home featured on The Design Files. Best of all (in my opinion), Kara has a Travelling Wares pop-up shop of vintage treasures in a gorgeous CARAVAN. That’s right! Frankie is a lovingly restored 1956 Franklin Caravan. You lucky Queenslanders can visit Frankie this Saturday (26 November 2011) at the Jan Power Farmers Markets at New Farm’s Powerhouse in Brisbane from 6am until 1pm. Jealous…
