Kmart hack: 2 ways to pimp your belly basket

Seagrass baskets are a versatile addition to any home chasing texture and a touch of Scandi style. For those on a budget, Kmart has made this look more affordable than ever, selling the popular woven baskets for just $12. If the natural look isn’t for you, there’s plenty of simple ways to add a little personality to this welcome home addition. Here’s two to get you started.

the two baskets together

Pom Pom Basket

What you’ll need:
2 metres of ball fringe (around $7 from Spotlight)
Craft glue
Pegs
Scissors

Method

Apply a thin layer of craft glue to first 10cm of the ball fringe.

Lift the edge of the handle and push the start of the ball fringe underneath.

Continue to wrap the ball fringe around the basket 3cm from the top, using pegs to hold it in place until the glue sets.

When you get to the other handle, cut the ball fringe and carefully push the edge of the fringe underneath.

Repeat this process until the fringe is wrapped around the entire basket.

Repeat the process for the top layer.

Ombre Basket

What you’ll need:
2 sample pots of paint (1 white, 1 in a colour of your choice)
Paint brush
Container to mix paint in

IMAGE 5

Method

Use the paintbrush to apply a coat of white paint just under the fold line of the seagrass basket. Paint the top third of the bottom half of the basket.

In a container, mix equal quantities of the white and second colour.

Paint the middle third of the bottom half of the basket. Use the paintbrush to blend this colour with the white above.

IMAGE 8

Paint the final third of the bottom half of the basket in the second colour taking the time to blend with the shade above.

Apply a second coat, following the steps above.

When the basket is dry, flip it over and paint the base.

Optional: to complete the look, attach tassels to the basket handles.

So there you have it, two DIY ideas to get you started but the options really are endless. Perhaps you could add leather handles, paint little circles or initials, or add more layers of ball fringe in a variety of colours! We’d love to see your hacks.

Possibly the best hand screenprinted, mix ‘n match pillowcase collection ever!

I Love Linen owner Lauren Roe has launched her own range of designs,  starting with the most fun and fabulous capsule collection of pillowcases.  They’re all limited edition and screenprinted by hand. Even the pom poms are hand dyed!

The advantage of designing your own range is that you can take everything you personally love and bring it to life as products! And I’m sure Lauren will find that many other people love what she loves too. Pom poms, pineapples, chevron and ombre are definitely popular!

The idea to kick off The Bedroom Society with pillowcases (a full range will follow for Spring/Summer full) came because her store, I Love Linen, already stocks many good basic sheets and quilt covers in a variety of colours. “Pillowcases are a great way to change the look of your bedroom without spending a lot of money, and I have seen many of us like to have maybe something a bit more simple for the duvet (like pure linen) and then have a bit of fun with a pillowcase,” she says.

“It’s true I designed the range with a bit of a selfish perspective in that I am addicted to polkadots, chevron, stripes, pom poms and ombre and I wanted to do something fun, so added pineapples (I went for a more sophisticated design) and watermelons (I chose a more graphic print for this one). All the pieces are great in that you can mix and match them too.”

Because the range is still being screenprinted (you know we like to bring you these things hot off the press!) you can only place pre-orders now, with items due to ship on 27 April. The prices are good too, at less than $50 a pair. I wouldn’t hang around if I were you. Look out for a giveaway in our newsletter in the not too distant future.

Pre-order online for delivery after 27 April.

Beautiful, unique ceramics by Takeawei

I was delighted to discover this Australian ceramics brand by a talented and well travelled Queenslander with a very impressive fashion background.

It comes as no surprise to me that Chela Edmunds’ work is being stocked by Sydney’s Koskela, which is a serious stamp of approval for anyone! Takeawei is a range of beautiful and useful objects in clay, covering a handful of trends with its ombre, animal print and neon designs, while still offering something very unique and endearingly imperfect. I particularly like the diversity of her pieces.

Chela says: “I’m so happy to be in Koskela! Being that I can only make a limited amount of pieces each month I knew I couldn’t supply everyone. Koskela was at the top of my list. They have such a refreshing approach to retail as a lifestyle experience.”
