Meet the husband and wife duo behind Pop & Scott

The creation of husband and wife team Poppy and Scott Gibson, Melbourne’s Pop & Scott has become a firm fixture on the Australian interiors scene courtesy of their instantly recognisable range of bold, hand-painted pots. We caught up with one half of the design duo recently for the inside skinny on the brand whose wares also include a fabulous range of furniture, lighting and accessories.

“I am from a northern coastal suburb of Perth, I left school and went to flower design school then moved to Melbourne when I was 19,” says Poppy. “I went on to work in boutique flower shops and then later worked as a freelance florist working with some of the floral greats like Katie Marx and Cecelia Fox. The work was corporate and event installations and it was a very fun and exciting time in my floristry career. I am, and always will be, a florist – I have been for 17 years and it’s a major part of my creative adventure.”

Husband Scott started his career in the skateboard industry before training as a plumber in his late thirties and then moving into furniture design. “After a few years of plumbing, Scotty decided to trade the smell of sewerage for the smell of sawdust,” says Poppy, who credits Mexico with the inception of the brand. “I have always had a love for well-designed spaces and furniture and on our travels through Mexico, Scotty and I started dreaming up designs together.”

Pop & Scott’s latest collection, Indigo Folk, is an ode to the 1970’s (a period beloved by the brand based on their past collections) and features a sumptuous shade of indigo blue. “While I was pregnant with Lou, our new darling son, I started to really reconnect with my bohemian roots again. We were listening to loads of Joni Mitchell and had Carole King’s album Tapestry on repeat.”

“We have had the perfect indigo colour in our paint collection for a while and have been excited to use it. Indigo was featured a lot in traditional folk arts so it was fitting to pay tribute to the colour. We looked at jewellery, folk embroidery and paintings to gather up simple elements for these designs,” says Poppy whose favourite features an olive leaf motif. “We have been trying to work in an olive leaf design for a while and then one of our artists, Darcey, nailed it perfectly,” she says.

Pop & Scott has a showroom in Melbourne’s Northcote with a second one opening in Byron Bay in mid-October. You can also shop the range online.

Interview: How 2 mums opened homewares store after 7 kids

After long corporate careers, friends Sophie Croft and Julie Markovic decided to depart that world and open their gorgeous retail store Feathered Arbour in Melbourne’s Carlton North. An inspiring interiors emporium, the store stocks brands such as Rachel Castle, Zakkia, Pop & Scott, Kip & Co, Kate and Kate and Armadillo&Co. We caught up with the duo recently to find out how it all began.

“I spent 20 years working for Myer with my last job being general manager of merchandise,” says Sophie, while Julie spent her corporate life crunching numbers in the IT business. Like so many before them, both women found motherhood was the impetus for opening their own small business. “I was lucky enough to be involved in one of Australia’s largest corporate sales when Myer was sold by Coles Myer to private equity. This was an amazing experience but at the end of this process I was done and pregnant with my second daughter. So I took a bit of a hiatus to just be a mum. I didn’t feel I could be the mum I wanted to be when my children were young if I had of stayed in the corporate world,” says Sophie, who soon found herself lost in the world of interiors and constantly returning to the idea of opening a retail space. “I wanted a balance in my life that I’m not sure I could have achieved staying in corporate and I secretly wanted to fulfil a childhood dream of owning my own shop.”

Julie came to the decision to depart the corporate world after having two children. “I realised I didn’t have the same passion for working in a large corporation. I packed up my Excel spreadsheet and went on to have two more children and spend some quality time at home watching them grow. Once my eldest started school I again had the desire to get involved in some projects, to keep my mind active, but knew the corporate world wouldn’t allow me to be the mother I wanted to be to my brood. I wanted to see the results of my hard work, rather than it being just fed up the line,” says Julie.

Rather fittingly, the pair met through their local primary school. “Both of us thrive on been busy and founds ourselves running the school fete together. We worked really well together and after doing this for a few years and with four of our combined seven children at school, we were both starting to look for something more,” says Sophie who, desperate to open a retail space and with her eye on an ideal location, shared her plans with Julie. “Within 24 hours, she asked whether I had thought of a business partner – the moon and stars really lined up at this point. We work really well together, we have really different but complementary skills and there is a deep respect for what each of us brings to the table. We speak 100 times a day, laugh lots and we love what we do. We have become amazing friends and so have our families – it just works!” says Sophie.

While the store stocks an enviable line-up of brands, the product they are most passionate about is their collection of Australian art. “The talent that exists in Australia is incredible. Artwork is probably one of our favourite categories, working with people like Emma Cleine of Lumiere, Prudence Caroline, Lisa Lapointe and Armelle Habib, is really inspiring. Bonnie and Neil are a real favourite and popping into their studio on a regular basis is awesome as you can watch the product being created in front of your eyes,” says Sophie.

POP X búl: the painted designer plant pot collaboration

Melbourne designers, Virginia Martin (of clothing label búl) and Poppy Lane (one half of furniture brand Pop & Scott), have joined creative forces to design a range of hand painted pots. Merging the aesthetic of both brands, the collaboration comprises six designs in two sizes.

Hand painted at the Pop & Scott workshop in the heart of Melbourne’s Northcote, the workspace was founded for the purpose of being able to collaborate with other creatives.

Clean lines and minimal design come into play across the collaboration. In natural búl style, Virginia has kept the concept clean, simple and timeless.

The range has been inspired by búl’s summer ’16 collection entitled Sri Lanka. The refined designs draw from the myriad of bold colours, ranging from warm yellow and nude, through to grey, stone and black. The sharp lines, soft curves and architectural shapes have been hand painted, highlighting both designers’ styles.

The POP X búl collaboration will be available at all búl stores from this Thursday 5 November. For more information.

The final result is an incredible array of 12 limited edition clocks, encapsulating each individual artist’s signature style. As every creative involved is so unique, Hunting for George decided not to put a price on the finished clocks but rather let the public decide. The online auction kicked off last night, allowing everyone the chance to secure a one of a kind clock.
