Our top 10 names in Australian wallpaper

Wallpaper is a great way to revamp your room for less. Often all you need is a feature wall and in a matter of hours your room will go from bleak to chic! But like everything there are a lot of of options, so it’s important to find wallpaper that doesn’t just look good but also has longevity… because there’s really nothing worse than wallpaper with air pockets and rips. Below is a range of Australian labels we give the Interiors Addict stamp of approval to!

Bethany Linz: Bethany trained in fine arts before moving to textile and wallpaper design, and boy can you tell. How intricate and beautiful is this botanical print? Available through Sparkk, the hand painted wallpaper is available in eight colour ways and the background can even be custom coloured to match your interior.

Bethany Linz

Quercus & Co.: A wallpaper and fabric label based in Sydney, Quercus & Co. love pattern and colour. More ‘art-paper’ than wallpaper, their latest collection, Suketchi, pays homage to Japanese art. Featuring symbols of the natural world — clouds, rivers, the sea and mountains — the designs are created via Ukiyo-e, a style of woodblock printing and painting that flourished in Japan from the 17th to 19th century.

Quercus & Co.

Anna Spiro: Designed by the Brisbane based interior designer for Porter’s Paints, Anna has applied her flair for layering fabrics with diverse pattern and colour to wallpaper. Bright, quirky and fun, Jen herself is a fan, having the below wallpaper in her home office.

Collette Dinnigan: Another collaboration with Porter’s Paints, wallpaper was a natural progression for the acclaimed fashion designer. Worldly taste is Colette’s signature… can’t you just imagine this wallpaper up against European antiques and artisan textiles? Refined and beautiful, her designs won’t go out of fashion any time soon.

Native Swinson: Quintessentially Australian, the prints of founder Kate Swinson are inspired by her memories of a rural childhood; think climbing up trees and floating down rivers. The detailed line drawings (you have to see them up close to believe them!) are screen printed by hand using non-toxic inks on eco-friendly papers.

Signature Prints: The proud custodians of Florence Broadhurst’s design library, Signature Prints bring the design legend’s unique patterns from the ’60s to now. From the classic colour ways she made famous to some original new editions, the collections encompass the perfect blend of bright and neutral, graphic and simple.

Luxe Walls: Options galore! Luxe Walls have partnered with Alamy, Australia’s biggest imagery supplier, so you literally have a million images to choose from. Oh my! They also have their signature collections if looking through a million images is a bit too overwhelming! Best yet, much of their collection is removable (including the concrete design below), which means you and your home can stay on top of the trends at an affordable price.

Annandale Wallpapers:  This family owned business has been supplying wallpaper for over 60 years! Home to one of Sydney’s widest selections — they have over 400 design sample books in store — Annandale Wallpapers offer something for everyone, from the more sensible geometrics to the free-spirited (dog-approved!) wallpaper below.

Patricia Braune: After 20 years in advertising as a graphic designer, Sydneysider Patricia embarked on a new career in surface design. Very much at home with a pen in hand, her intricately drawn prints are rich in texture and layers, just like the flowers she draws.

Publisher Textiles: A favourite of Jen’s (she’s used them twice), Publisher Textiles are all about creating wallpaper the hard way, by hand! Using traditional hand screen printed techniques and small-scale production, everything is designed, printed and cut in their Sydney studio. Arguably the brand’s most iconic design is the Hibernian print (below), inspired by the heritage listed building in Surry Hills.

Make your rental feel more homely with Amy’s top tips

With sky-high property prices the new norm, particularly in our major cities, home ownership is increasingly out of reach for many people. So, how does one make a rental feel like a home?

Command hooks
Made for renters, as you don’t have to ask your landlord permission to use them, Command make a range of no-hole, picture hanging hooks and Velcro strips that won’t leave unsightly holes in the wall nor peel paint when you move on. Available in a variety of sizes and with the ability to hold up to 3.6kg, these plastic hooks and strips are ideal for hanging pictures in a rental – a gallery wall being the obvious choice for nesting types. There’s nothing that makes a house feel like a home more than a wall displaying your favourite photographs, prints and wall hangings.

Indoor plants
Currently a massive trend, indoor plants (coupled with gorgeous pots) really do wonders for any interior space. Plus, when you move you can always take them with you.

Paint
Some landlords will allow you to repaint provided you paint the walls back to the original colour before you depart. Some are even happy for their tenants to make permanent changes though will usually want to sign off on the colours beforehand. A bit of an undertaking, you could simply pick out a few areas to paint instead for that personal touch – the front door is the obvious pick.

A simple customisation solution – this pink door adds instant personality. Image: Dulux

Lighting
It’s amazing the difference that lighting improvements can make. Swap out your outdated ceiling lights for a more stylish alternative – IKEA make a variety of affordable paper and drum shades. Alternatively, investing in a couple of statement table and floor lamps is always a good idea as you can take them with you when you leave. And for alfresco areas, LED string lights look rather magical.

Removable wallpaper & wall decals
While the market is flooded with a variety of wall decals and removable wallpaper, varying in quality, there are some brands doing great things. No longer simply available in shiny finishes, there are plenty of realistic-looking textured ones to choose from now. A great alternative to paint, removable wall decals and wallpaper allow you to customise your rental without leaving a trace of it when you move out.

Quercus & Co make gorgeous removable wallpaper tiles

Rugs
A large area rug is ideal for covering unsightly carpet or other undesirable floor coverings – ugly tiles and lino spring to mind. Plus, they’re great for demarcating zones within the home and you can transport them to your next home too.

West Elm Boho Textured Wool Rug, $699

Portable shelving
A fabulous alternative to a built-in bookcase, portable shelves (ladder ones are currently on trend) are the perfect spot for you to display your favourite tomes and trinkets – both of which will make your rental feel homelier.

Mocka Maya Ladder, $99.95

Knobs & hardware
Sometimes a simple change of door handle or knob can make a huge difference to the overall look of a space – especially on kitchen cupboard fronts or wardrobe doors. Just remember to take the old ones with you when you are purchasing replacements to ensure they are compatible. You can simply change them back when you leave.

A guilty pleasure of mine, the knob selection at Anthropologie is unsurpassed

Dulux’s new paintable wallpaper is removable too

Wallpaper is an easy way to inject interest into your space. Dulux’s new Design Wallpaper Paintables range gives you the power to add textured dimension to your walls in your preferred colour scheme. It’s wallpaper meets paint! AND it’s removable.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80595_shortened

Comeing in three textures – linen, concrete and pinstripe – this new product offers completely new possibilities for design from bold and striking walls, or used sparingly to create subtle visual interest.

Dulux Colour Trend Forecaster, Andrea Lucena-Orr, says combined with paint, this innovative design solution is simple and cost-effective. “The range not only beautifies walls but easily covers small imperfections, with no stripping, filling or sanding required for slightly damaged walls,” she says.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80550

Gone are the days where the application and removal of wallpaper is an arduous task. Using the latest technology, Dulux Design Wallpaper Paintables can be easily applied and maneuvered for precise application; as well as effortlessly removed by peeling off where the glue does not damage or remain on the existing wall substrate.

“The range is incredibly easy to work with in regards to fixing on the wall and painting because the paper is so much thicker than standard thin wallpaper,” Lucena-Orr says.

There are many ways that wallpaper can be used to complement existing room features by adding an accent above a fireplace, hallways and inner wardrobe walls. “Paintable wallpaper adds texture to your walls that paint alone can’t achieve. Textured wallpaper takes your paint to the next level, allowing you to create a luxurious bespoke look,” Andrea adds.

Dulux_Wallpaper_80497_3

“It offers homeowners, and even renters, the opportunity to have more control over the design of their living space where you just peel the wallpaper off the wall when it is time to redecorate or move.”

Dulux’s range of paintable wallpaper allows you to transform and hide slightly damaged walls, turning them into the ‘wow’ factor of your home without having to add more costly items such as tiles, stone or textile fabrics.

Available exclusively at Bunnings stores with an RRP of $34.95 per roll. Roll size 10.5m x 0.52m. For more information and project inspiration.

Instant wallpaper luxury is now landlord-friendly

In my mind, removable wallpaper is genius, it’s the perfect way renters can get the look and feel of wallpaper but without having to ask their landlord for permission! And while the self-adhesive kind has normally been a shiny vinyl material (which I have to admit isn’t my favourite), the latest offering from Melbourne’s Wall Sticker Company is removable wallpaper made from 100% polyester fabric.

havana_muted_high

Created with a beautiful woven finish, it won’t shrink or peel up at the edges like a vinyl can. Coming in a magnitude of designs, the best part is you can even use your own image. All you need to do is peel, stick and enjoy! And when it’s time for an update or to move home, you can peel it down and even move it to your next home without removing any paint or leaving any residue.

The Wall Sticker Company also offers wallpaper samples to make choosing designs and colours risk-free.  The 50+ range of patterns and full wall photographic murals is also a great solution for events, businesses and commercial spaces.

5 ways to make your (temporary) mark on a rented home

Decorate your home without the need of a hammer or drill and without damaging your walls with 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, which hold up to 7kg. Visit go.3m.com/loveyourwalls/ for decorating inspiration and the chance to win some great prizes.

If there’s one thing that annoys me more than the painfully slow scoring process on The Block, it’s people saying you can’t or, worse still, there’s no point, in making an effort with your interiors if you rent your home. AAAGGGHHHH. Nonsense!

Of course there’s a point. One of the main things I hope to get across in this blog, is how much joy and fun you can get from making your home a nest, filling it with things that make you smile or perhaps feel calm and secure, or remind you of a great holiday. It can be as simple as the lovely feeling of your home being very “you” or feeling so super cosy that there’s nowhere you’d rather unwind after a busy day at the office. And it doesn’t have to be hard, expensive or permanent.

Here are my top 5 ways to add some personality and you-ness to your rented home. Because we all deserve to love our home and get the feel-good vibes that go along with that, whether we own or not. And let’s face it, it’s increasingly bloody hard to get on the housing ladder, especially in Sydney!

1. The last time I looked, rugs, furniture and accessories were all removable and therefore able to be moved from room to room or home to home, or even packed away and saved for a future home if they don’t work in the next place. There is no reason why you can’t invest in these items because they can move with you. Be smart and buy key, larger pieces in neutral colours.

2. Put up art and framed photos using 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips. These aren’t just for small frames.  You can use them to hang frames weighing up to a whopping 7kg. No limits! Creating a gallery wall of photos or hanging a favourite art print above your bed are now options without leaving so much as a mark on your landlord’s walls. Winning.

3. Change curtains and blinds. I have never EVER lived with the supplied curtains or blinds in a rental. I remove them, put them away safely somewhere and replace them with whatever I like. I simply put back the originals when I come to move out. You can also change the shower curtain if you have one.

Urban Outfitters sell great shower curtains online

4. Try removable wallpaper. There’s the vinyl self-adhesive kind (try Wallcreations or The Wallsticker Company) or the real paper kind (read about my experience with Publisher Textiles, tried and tested!) and you can damn well have that feature wall if you want it!

5. Ok, so this one isn’t temporary but bear with me. Depending on how long you’re likely to live in your rental and how important your interiors are to you, weigh up whether you might be prepared to spend a little money on things you won’t be able to take with you when you leave. This isn’t for everyone, but I’ve done this myself. In one apartment I HATED the kitchen floor so much I offered to pay half for a new one and the landlord said yes. In another apartment, when I moved in, I realised quite how badly the place needed a lick of paint (but it certainly wasn’t bad enough that you could argue it HAD to be done). I offered to pay half to have the small place painted and the job was done within a week. Happy days! I can’t tell you what a difference it made and I didn’t regret a dollar. Yes, you won’t get that money back but if you, like me, are really fussy about what your home looks like, you might consider it’s money well spent.

Having both rented and owned, I don’t think there’s been much difference in how much love has gone into my homes’ interiors. How about you?

Love to hear your tips for making your mark on you rental! Please share in the comments.

Removable (non-vinyl) wallpaper for renters: proof it exists!

I’ve always loved wallpaper, and even more so since I became immersed in the wonderful world of interiors and realised how much gorgeous stuff is out there in Australia alone.

photo 1

I have always rented since I’ve been in this country so I always thought, sadly, wallpaper was going to be a no-no with the real estate agents. Until Publisher Textiles told me about their removable wallpaper, that is. And it really is wallpaper proper, not the vinyl kind (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I was intrigued and I had to give it a go, not least because if it was true, I needed to share it with my renting readers!
