70s glam vibe from Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy sisters

The 70s had it all – from boho chic to retro glam – and its influence on fashion and interiors has transcended generations like few eras, before or since. Australian interiors brands Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy have selected the best elements of the iconic decade and infused them throughout their decadent new homewares collections.

Offering a fresh take on 70s opulence, the newest ethically sourced leather rugs and accessories from Art Hide feature rich jewel tones, reminiscent of the colours seen in the era’s best five-star hotels and with a hint of rock-star glam. New styles Largo and Optico are inspired by bold wallpaper prints of the time in stunning teal and rich forest green hues. And some classic pieces get a modern update, such as the Estrella rug which boasts gold accents injected throughout its herringbone pattern in an ode to 70s glam.

Likewise, Amigos de Hoy brings elevated bohemian glamour to interiors with a new collection of small batch, handmade and traditional artisan crafted pieces. From vintage floral-inspired prints and patterns to Moroccan influences and other 70s references, the collection’s textile pieces deliver on both quality and style.

And of course no 70s-inspired collection would be complete without a scattering of gold. New Tom Tom drums pick up where the brand’s popular Joanie and Stevie tambourines left off, and are a continuation of musical references seen throughout the range.

Immerse yourself in relaxed opulence and evoke classic glamour with the stunning new pieces from these leading Australian interior brands.

Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy are creative collaborations between Australian sisters Kura Perkins and Bree Hay-Hendry. Both brands are inspired by the pair’s world travels and the talented artisans they encounter along the way. They are committed to creating unique homewares that are both fun and fabulous, while retaining a timeless style.

Display your house plants in style with Ivy Muse’s latest

Indoor plants are such a fabulous trend and simple pots and hangers will let the greenery speak for itself. We’re loving how Ivy Muse’s latest collection, Homebody, does this.

Homebody_08wide

Check out their handmade ceramic pots and tabletops. The shapes are simple and colour palette subtle (think blacks, whites, nudes and lovely glacier and pewter shades). They’re produced locally from Melbourne – it’s fantastic being able to support homegrown businesses while still getting something stunning!

Homebody_04b

Co-founder Jacqui Vidal was inspired by how people and plants interact. She’s eager to see more of this natural relationship in the home. “We wanted to encourage people to make the most of greenifying the space they have at home, whether big or small.”

Homebody_02

Ivy Muse don’t just want to make it possible to keep plants inside though. It’s about helping you do so in the most beautiful way possible. Co-founder Alana Langan says the Homebody collection showcases plants, making them features of rooms.

Homebody_05c

If you’re after something classic, choose black or white. For something braver, consider the limited edition colours. The Willow is available in glacier, while those who are fans of nude shades will love the Cubby. The Foundation comes in pewter, one of the most on-trend colours this season.

Homebody_07

Another exciting part of this collection is Ivy Muse’s collaboration with Wootten. The leather craftsman has made supple leather cords for the Saturn hanger. It’s such an organic natural vibe when combined with the plants. You can make the style personal by choosing your own pot for inside.

Homebody_06

The three stands work with a variety of pot sizes and can be turned different ways to suit various spaces.

The Saturn hanger will set you back $130, while the stands start at $170. For more information check out their site here

Designer and stylist team up to create ni.ni.creative

Meeting ten years ago while studying at RMIT, product designer Nick Rennie and stylist Nina Provan had always shared very similar views on design. Often brainstorming ideas and collaborating on projects, it wasn’t until early this year they decided to turn those late night discussions and fervent design sessions into a business, ni.ni.creative.

Nick and Nina
Nick and Nina

“We provide products for today’s lifestyle – objects that are luxurious, have quality and a touch of detail for home and the discerning design lover,” explains Nick. “Our initial collection consists of our Cross leather bags and the Kumo and Tab cushions, and while at the moment the range is small, there are plans to increase the offering in the very near future.”

With the duo having designed their Cross leather bag some years ago, it was the compliments from friends and family that saw them bring the bags into production. Clean and simple, with leather that softens beautifully over time, they’re just as comfortable used at the gym or on a night out.

These, coupled with the Tab cushions, made from leather and fabric with a cute little tab on the side and the Kumo cushions, which feature beautiful 3D woven fabrics by Dutch and Danish companies, Febrik and Kvadrat, make up their debut collection. “Our range is all about designs that are sleek and contemporary, tactile and timeless,” says Nick. “Importantly, all our products are handmade in Melbourne, something we are really proud to achieve.”

Aside from working on their own businesses, Nick and Nina are currently developing a number of new ni.ni.creative products, these include some more bags as well as homewares and lighting. And if their debut collection is anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Leather or fabric sofa: how to choose which is best for you

Leather or fabric, which sofa are you?

Think about how much time you and your family (and pets) spend lounging in the living room. At least a couple of hours every day – so that’s a lot of couch time! Needless to say, buying a sofa is a big decision and definitely not something you want to get wrong.

PB_Leather_Chesterfield_Sofa

Usually your space will dictate the size and configuration you choose – for example, one three-seater plus two armchairs, or one large sectional taking up a whole corner. And your personal taste will determine whether you’re partial to a traditional tufted Chesterfield or a more contemporary, clean-lined style.

But the biggest dilemma for most people is deciding on the upholstery. So many of us dream of a particular look but forgo that for “something practical” instead. But there’s no need to compromise. Pottery Barn is here to dispel a few common myths about fabric and leather sofas:

Myth 1. Leather is a no-go for homes with kids and pets

This is such a fallacy! Yes it’s luxurious, but great-quality leather is also family-friendly and very forgiving – in fact it’s one of the few materials that keeps getting better looking with wear and age. Each subtle scuff, scratch and burnish mark only adds to its character, creating a patina that’s beautiful and unique. Look for leather sofas that are aniline-dyed, meaning their rich colour carries through and through.

pb-aniline_Turner_Sofa

Myth 2. White or light-coloured fabrics are impossible to keep clean

One word: Slipcovered. Many sofa slipcovers are washable in your home washing machine. So, like your favourite white shirt, the white sofa of your dreams is not only achievable, it’s a classic that is sure to be well-loved and lived in for many years to come. The secret to keeping your cover looking great after a wash is to fit it back on the sofa it while it’s still a little bit damp, and let it dry thoroughly to shape.

PB_upholstered_carlisle

Myth 3. Leather will feel too “cold” and unapproachable in my casual, cosy room

Everybody dreams of a sofa they can sink into, one that envelops them like a warm hug. Don’t overlook leather for possessing this charm. Just like a beautiful designer handbag, a great quality leather sofa gets more buttery and beautiful every day. Burnished for a smooth, polished look and feel, each piece becomes softer and softer over time. And when you’re talking about shades of decadent chocolaty browns or delicious honeyed tans, the leather effect is irresistible.

Myth 4. Upholstered fabrics are too delicate for a family lifestyle

This might be true for some fabrics, sure. For example, sofas upholstered in fine silk blends or luxurious pure linen are best left to formal sitting rooms and less regular use. But there are plenty of fabrics especially designed to stand up to the rigours of real life.

The ultimate lesson here is to buy once, buy well, and choose what you truly love – and you’ll love it every day for so many years to come.

Online shopping fix: Mahali

Mahali, meaning market place or plaza in Swahili, is a newly launched online boutique, honouring artisans from around the world.

mahali

Featuring designs from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia (and more soon to be added), it is the brainchild of mother and daughter duo Susie Ellis and Justine Smith. Boasting homewares, linens, ceramics and jewellery, they aim to provide wares you’d find yourself in an exotic market, if only you had the time and the plane ticket!

“Growing up in Southern Africa I was blessed to be surrounded by people creating beautiful things,” explains Susie. “As a young girl, I remember visiting a market on the shores of Lake Nakuru, Kenya and watching local women make sisal bags, baskets and placemats and that memory has stayed with me ever since. My daughter and I saw an opening for exclusive and handmade homewares that are not available in the local market.”

Bound together by a love of travel, stylish living and impeccable design, Susie and Justine hope to provide products that reflect where their customers have been and where they hope to go. “We know people can’t spend their lives travelling the world but Mahali can bring it a little closer,” says Susie. “Our pieces tell a story of another land, of travel and of adventure. We believe in owning unique things that tell a story.”

Hunting for George’s new winter bedding range

Maybe it’s because I spend so much time working from bed (I probably shouldn’t admit to that, right?!) that I absolutely adore bedding. And Hunting for George’s winter release, Moody Blues, is no exception.

MnqGVRVOBU6GsSwGMrLz1BEgsGKGVlCYSnxcLo2sXSM

A more masculine tone than they’re use to, it features dark colours and simplified graphics. “We always design for a unisex audience however this season does have a more masculine overtone,” explains co-founder Lucy Glade-Wright. “Our focus was pulled towards creating an emotive, nostalgic collection that was confident in its simplicity and character.”

Key pieces of the range include the new Colonel Mustard quilt set: ‘The dashing clean-cut gentleman, dignified and dangerous with a penchant for drama’. The Bodhi quilt set: ‘Where handsome rebels choose to sleep’ and the Chubby Checker quilt set: ‘Because sometimes the nice guy is the right guy, who may even love snuggling as much as you do’. You’ve got to love their descriptions!

The Moody Blues collection also introduces a new range of textures to accompany their popular pure cotton sateen bed linen; such as 100% Australian Merino Wool blankets, buffalo leather cushion covers and hand poured concrete clocks. “We wanted to experiment with new textures this season,” says co-founder Jo Harris. “Winter is all about layering, the inclusion of these new elements help to enhance the character of a space. The wool blankets and buffalo leather cushions are some of our favourite new additions to the range. These designs are all about luxury and we hope they will be cherished for many years to come.”

Moody Blues is the third textile release from Hunting for George and accompanies their recently released Australian made furniture collection. Now in their fifth year, Hunting for George are set to expand on their popular designs and explore new territories in homewares. Watch this space!

Win the purse which charges your mobile phone (3 to give away + 20% off for every reader)

I was recently gifted an awesome Mighty Purse from Handbag Butler. Now, you can imagine someone like me relies on and uses their mobile phone a lot. Instagram usage alone is enough to burn through half of the best phone battery in half a day! When I’m out and about, if I can avoid it (and especially since I’ve been pregnant) I try to avoid taking my MacBook Air with me, light as it is. And these days, you can do so much just from your small screen.

To avoid being caught short of juice, I had bought a portable battery charger for my bag. However I kept blooming well forgetting it. So when Handbag Butler offered me one that comes attached to a purse, and a nice looking cream real leather one at that, I knew I was onto something.

mighty purse interiors addict

Another pregnancy thing has been downsizing my massive bag (the 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Medium) to a smaller, hands-free (motherhood pending!) cross-body bag (Tory Burch, if you’re interested). My new Mighty Purse fits perfectly inside it, fitting all the essentials like my phone (as it charges), Opal Card, business cards, keys and LIPSTICK. Because this on-the-go charger is now kept with other everyday must-haves, I don’t tend to forget it.

MP407_Olive_TopView

For a full-time blogger, being able to charge on the go is a dream. My phone would often die on the way home from an evening event when I’d taken lots of pictures. Not being able to catch up on emails on the way home (by cab or train) was always really irritating. As a business owner, I like using ‘dead time’ wisely!

The battery in the purse is a Lithium-ion Polymer battery, the same type as in your smartphone, except for its size. The purse battery has a capacity of 4000mAh; more than twice your phone battery. With a fully charged purse, you can typically charge a smartphone twice over before your purse will need to be recharged. When it does, you plug it into the mains via your phone charger: easy! Or into your computer’s USB port! The purse measures 20cm x 12.5cm x 2.5cm and weighs just 200g. It comes in many colours and is RRP from $99.95 for faux leather. It is suitable for all micro-USB phones and iPhone adaptors are an additional RRP $14.95.

Ivory

The wristlet collection is made from the finest grade leather and The Mighty Purse Sport Luxe Collection is for the fashion forward and active person. Crafted with quilted nylon, with a genuine leather trim, this bag has belt loops on the back and a removable, adjustable leather strap. It can be worn across the body or around the waist as a hip-bag, taking you from work, to the gym, and out at night!

WIN

I loved my Mighty Purse gift so much, I’ve got hold of three (each with iPhone adaptors should that be your mobile of choice) to give away to three of you lucky ladies! Just fill in the form below for your chance of winning. Please state your preference of:

Black Shimmer Wristlet (worth $109.95)
Ivory Wristlet (worth $109.95 and just like mine)
Olive Sport Luxe (worth $109.95)

READER DISCOUNT

If you’re impatient or not feeling lucky, we have a special 20% off Mighty Purses for our readers using the promo code interiorsaddict. Valid until next Tuesday 28 April 2015 online.

Striking sofas in Arthur G’s latest range

We have our eyes on a few of the new lounges in Arthur G’s latest range. The Boss (below), in particular, is our favourite, with its Cloth Fabric indigo, painterly fabulousness! Divine! We love their Australian designed and made creations.

The Boss 3-seater in a Cloth Fabric design
The Boss 3-seater in a Cloth Fabric design

Much as I subscribe to the idea that large pieces like sofas should be purchased in neutrals, there are always exceptions to the rule, right?! The Colette (below) in duck egg, has a very ladylike, classic look and I love the contrast of its timber and brass feet.

ArthurG_ColetteSofa_DuckEggBlue_LowRes

And last but not least, the Manhattan four-seater is making me reassess black leather as a sofa choice.
