Bonnie & Neil latest: 1970’s via the coast!

COAST is the latest collection from textile designers Bonnie & Neil and, as the name suggests, it’s inspired by the colours and textures of the seaside, both at home and abroad. Less of a straight-forward floral outing (the brand’s signature look), this range features tile designs and wave patterns across tableware, cushions, wallpaper, ceramics, cards, tea towels, linen throws and artwork. There’s 60 stunning new pieces and we’re hard pressed to choose a fave.

The ‘Ocean’ and ‘Coast’ cushions are signature pieces from the collection

“Australia remains one of our main sources of influence, with Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland’s coastlines all reflected in this collection. But what we really wanted to represent, with the range, was the feelings that coastal living and holidays evoke,” says one half of the talented duo, Bonnie Ashley.

The ‘Ocean’ cushions are a highlight – they feature abstract waves in cobalt blue, black, khaki and clay colour ways. The 1970’s feel is palpable and it’s an aesthetic that is woven throughout the range. “This collection has a nod to the seventies in both pattern and colour ways with rich amber, red and brown complementing the earthy palette,” says Bonnie.

And for the first time, the brand has added wallpaper to their offering, with the aforementioned ‘Ocean’ design a standout. “We’ve had wallpaper on our agenda for some time so it’s exciting to finally release it!” says Bonnie.

The ‘Coast’ design takes a more literal approach with a statement seashell looking much more stylish than you’d imagine (seaside motifs can look pretty naff no?).

As for Bonnie’s favourite pieces she’s a big fan of the ‘Marguerite Velvet’ cushion in the pink and red colourway. “This design started as a series of oil paintings and we’ve collaged them together in repeat,” says Bonnie. The ‘Strawberries’ napkins are another of Bonnie’s favourite designs – so much so that they’ve already made their way onto the designer’s table at home.

While the brand has long been celebrated for its unique aesthetic, few people realise that most of their products are handmade with screen printing an onerous yet central technique. “A number of our designs are printed as CMYK process which is a time consuming but technically rewarding process. Many people don’t realise that we hand screen print our products from our studio so there’s a whole lot of design attention that goes into each piece.”

Bonnie & Neil

Titled ‘Sleep Amongst Botanics,’ the enchanting in-room display has been styled with a curated selection of Bonnie & Neil’s hand crafted botanical motif items to absolutely sumptuous effect. Expect to see this room all over Insta this summer!

But perhaps the most whimsical aspect of the installation is the gorgeous oversized floral arbour that is suspended above the room’s bed, cascading down the headboard. Created by floral stylists, The Hunted Yard, the dramatic floral display really does offer that final, fabulous flourish.

Bonnie & Neil

The room takeover also features a series of fabulous gifts for guests including luxe skincare from Australian natural brand Biology plus a natural scent diffuser from Air Aroma. In addition, guests will be able to ‘shop the look’ for all the Bonnie and Neil items with a special West Hotel incentive code.

The experience doesn’t end in the room with the hotel’s bar offering a ‘Summer of Gin’ bar menu as part of the installation. Inspired by Sydney distiller Archie Rose’s summer gin blends, guests can choose from a selection of gin-based cocktails and gin-infused bar snacks in the hotel’s bar.

The ‘Sleep Amongst Botanics’ accommodation package is available to guests over the summer holiday period, from December 2018 to mid-January 2019, from $332 per night.

Floral print coffee table

“We’ve been making timber furniture for a while, Neil has a background in furniture making and set design, but these coffee tables and timber screens are new categories for us,” says one half of the design duo Bonnie Ashley, of the gorgeous pieces that are designed and handmade in the brand’s Melbourne studio.

Timber screen

“When we were designing the collection we thought about different ways to cover every surface, which is where the idea to create patterned table tops and dramatic backgrounds came from,” says Bonnie. The statement timber screens feature hand-painted oil paintings and floral arrangements including Dutch-inspired posies and Australian natives. “Those designs were inspired by my years working as a florist,” says Bonnie.

While Australians have been lucky enough to have access to the label’s wares for some time, overseas customers now can too with prestigious retailers Liberty London and Paris’ Le Bon Marche both stocking the brand. “We’ve always visited these beautiful stores when travelling so we’re thrilled to be appearing alongside some of the world’s best brands in amazing spaces!” says Bonnie.

And it turns out there is a solid international fervor for the brand’s Australian inspired designs. “Our approach to colour and pattern has been really well received. We’re finding that international customers are attracted to our Australian inspired pieces but our botanical and geometric designs also work well overseas,” says Bonnie.

The latest collection, titled Home, includes a rich combination of linen, cotton and velvet in mix and match colours and textures. “Home is the translation of our creative influences into beautiful pieces within the home.  The collection celebrates the indulgence of winter months, getting cosy and being indoors, and includes a luxurious new bedding range adorned with scattered florals, painterly patterns and designs influenced by historical textiles,” says Bonnie.

Make your own bed head for under $50 (yes really)!

How to: make your own bed head for under $50 (yes really)!

IMG_0909

I can’t even recall how many conversations I’ve had with people wanting a bed head for their ensemble but not wanting to fork out for an expensive store-bought one. My housemate happened to be one of these people, so we decided to give her room a makeover on a minimal budget. This bed head could actually be the easiest DIY project I have ever done and it’s renter-friendly!

What you need:

1x piece of ply board
Sandpaper
Paint and paint brush
Matt finishing spray
Nails or 3M hooks to attach to wall
Pencil.

Step 1: Picking a pattern & size

The first thing you need to do is work out your tile size. I was working with a double bed, so I went with 39cm x 39cm timber tiles (I wanted to allow for a slight overhang on either side). Deciding on a pattern we both loved and finding something relatively simple to match my poor painting skills was a whole other story! I found so many cool patterns it made it hard to choose, so go with your gut on this one. Trust me when I say the hardest part is deciding on a pattern to put on the tiles. Once you’ve locked in the pattern, it will take you no time at all!

Step 2: Get your supplies

IMG_8021

I headed down to my local hardware store and managed to get everything relatively easily (Hint: Get them to cut your ply for you into your tile size. It’s free, only takes a few minutes, and saves all the mess at your own place!).

Step 3: Mount, draw and paint the tiles

IMG_8024

Mount your tiles to the wall and draw on the pattern you chose. Once you’re happy with the way the pattern will look, paint away. Then all you have to do is wait for it to dry!

Step 4: Spray with finishing spray

IMG_0893

Apply a few coats of finishing spray to your ply tiles and wait for it to dry.

We were lucky that we had some 3M velcro strips laying around. 3M hooks will up the price but understand that if you’re renting, your landlord probably won’t appreciate you nailing the ply tiles to the wall. If you love the idea of this bedhead but don’t have the time to make one yourself, you can always spend a bit more and opt for some of Bonnie and Neil’s ready done gorgeous tiles ($25 each).
