The best-looking pump handwashes for your bathroom

Give it a few weeks and a bar of soap can quickly become an off-colour, grimey mess (and their hygiene factor has to be a bit questionable, right?!). But the right looking and smelling hand wash pump is so much more than just a great way to clean your hands; it’s one of your main bathroom accessories, both pretty and practical! Here we’ve updated our popular roundup of the best ones out there.

“Whoever said Australia isn’t a superpower should come outback,” says Leif who has taken over the stylish hand wash space of late with its beautiful scents and chic packaging. The Leif Limited Edition Gold Label Boronia hand wash, $99 is housed in a stunning terracotta bottle. Inside is one of the brand’s signature scents – it’s made from native Boronia that blooms for just a a couple of weeks each winter. Showcasing native Australian ingredients, the brand’s formulations are vegan, cruelty-free and made in Australia.

I’m still a long time fan of the Bondi Wash hand washes ($35): Combining the finest natural ingredients with essential oils, each hand wash includes natural moisturisers to soothe and soften. Perfect for those with sensitive skin or eczema. Available in five scents (my fave is Sydney Peppermint and Rosemary), the minimal packaging design looks lovely too (I love that you can actually see the product inside). And the fragrances are amazing!

Bondi Wash hand wash

The creation of sisters, twins and former Blockheads Alisa and Lysandra, the AL.IVE Kaffir Lime & Green Tea wash and lotion duo and tray ($79) has been created with design lovers in mind. The products are available in a variety of gorgeous colours including rust, sea foam, blush and black and the hand wash and lotion duo is housed in a chic tray. An eco-conscious purchase, the brand plants a tree for every product sold.

My friends and I used to joke that a sign of making it in life was having Aesop Hand Wash ($43) in your home, because let’s face it, it’s not cheap (although not the most expensive on this list!)! The older I get though, the more I think that spending a little bit more on everyday treats like this is absolutely worth it! A stylists’ favourite the world over, the iconic label and amber glass-look bottle is instantly recognisable! Established in Melbourne in 1987, I also can’t help but love this Aussie business success story. Their stores are always beautifully designed too.

Housed in a stylish glass bottle, the Panier des Sens Marseille Liquid Soap in glass Rose ($34.95) is one of the more beautiful hand wash options on the market. Hailing from Provence, and distributed locally by Saison, the unchanged ancestral formula is cooked in the purest tradition of the Marseille master soap makers (in a cauldron no less!). It’s formulated with rose flower oil while violet, muguet and peach notes round out its elegant scent.

Panier hand wash

From the company best known for its iconic eucalyptus oil (that’s been in Australian homes since 1852!) comes an absolutely fabulous hand wash for a bargain price – the Bosistos Desert Lime & Eucalyptus hand wash ($6). And while the bottle isn’t the most beautiful of this bunch it is simple and clean and, the scent it leaves on your hands is delicious. The product is is enriched with Australian native botanicals including Desert Lime which is known for its anti-ageing properties. The product is available nationally through Coles and Woolworths.

Part of Mecca’s in-house brand, the Mecca Cosmetics Nourishing Hand Wash ($40) is designed for a little everyday indulgence and we love its simple monochrome design. The hand wash is scented with delicate notes of clove, juniper berries, tobacco leaves and oud while key ingredients include nourishing avocado oil, rejuvenating lemon oil and beta glucan which ensures moisture penetrates the skin. Once the product is finished, the bottle can be returned to the store where it will enter a recycling program and be made into something new.

Another Aussie brand that has made it overseas is Grown Alchemist, with its organic ingredients, commitment to sustainability and focus on products that actually work. Their hand creams are also amazing in my opinion! I love the packaging and the amazing scent of their Sweet Orange, Cedarwood and Sage Hand Wash ($31) They have other fragrances too.

Beautifully designed and naturally-derived, each Thankyou. hand wash ($7.50) refreshes refreshes and nourishes your skin. But that’s not the best part, every bottle helps get water, toilets or hygiene training to people in need. Buying from Thankyou is a real win-win! Great value, great looking and a great cause!

Thank you hand wash

Aussie made, the Ena brand features beautifully designed products that are environmentally friendly and contain no nasty chemicals or synthetic fragrances. Made from essential oils, the brand gives back with every sale to one of its three chosen NGOs. We love the Ena Pink Grapefruit, Lemon Myrtle and Eucalyptus hand wash (500ml), $36.

Ena hand wash

Made in Denmark and exuding the clean hallmarks of Danish design, the Frama Apothecary hand wash, $64.90 is a fabulous choice. Housed in a luxe glass bottle, this mild hand wash has a fresh, aromatic scent that includes notes of sandalwood, cedar wood and ylang ylang.

Frama hand wash

Another option for those that love clean, minimal graphic design in their bathroom products, Tangent GC’s Organic Hand Soap, $43 is a beautiful bathroom accessory that is ideal for daily use. The product is crafted in France from all natural and organic ingredients and is scented with the beautifully smelling citrus fruit yuzu.

We hope you liked this list. Let us know what you would add.

Mums Who Clean reveal their best spring cleaning tips

Rachael Hallett and Karlie Suttie, creators of the wildly popular Mums who Clean Facebook Group with almost 350,000 members, share their top tips for getting on top of the spring cleaning. With summer seemingly nowhere in sight, we figure we’ve got a little longer this year!

Rachael and Karlie of Mums Who Clean
  1. Make a plan

Spring cleaning can be challenging whether your place is big or small. But, like all big undertakings, making a plan is a good idea. Start by listing out every room of your house, thinking about things you probably don’t clean regularly. This may include baseboards, walls, behind and underneath furniture (and the furniture itself). A handy tip is to work from the top down, starting with ceilings, walls and cabinetry first and floors last. This helps ensure that any dust or debris that falls to the floor is cleaned up at the end, as opposed to cleaning the floors first.

  1. Overhaul your cleaning supplies

Before getting stuck into the dirty work, ensure you have all the cleaning supplies you will need for the work ahead. It’s also a good time to replace those old rags, brushes or sponges you’ve been using the last few months that may have hidden bacteria of their own. Many cleaning products also have a shelf life, so any products that are old and out of date, such as multi-purpose cleaners, should be thrown away. This is also a good time to check the filter on your vacuum. A dirty filter can significantly affect your vacuum’s suction power, resulting in a less effective clean. Ideally, you should be cleaning your vacuum filter every three months to get rid of the dirt particles, crumbs and dust hiding inside or on newer vacuums, like the LG CordZero Handheld Vacuum with All-In-One Tower, the LG ThinQ mobile app sends notifications to your phone when you need to change the filter.

  1. Declutter first

To boost your motivation, start by decluttering your space. Consider donating and selling anything you don’t need so that you are starting your spring clean with a fresh, spacious area. This will help you achieve a deep, thorough clean of the home as opposed to a superficial clean around the cluttered objects.  If you aim to reduce the clutter on flat surfaces like tabletops and shelving, it will also become much easier to keep clean in the long term by reducing the places dust and debris can hide.

  1. Set a new tone, with some fresh scents

There’s nothing better than the smell of citrus to power you through your spring cleaning. Distract yourself from the pungent odour of cleaning supplies by lighting a candle. You could even add a scent to your vacuum cleaner or mop water, so you leave a nice smell throughout the home. Some of our top scent suggestions are eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.

  1. Clean your cleaning appliances

Dishwashers and washing machines are appliances we use daily to clean up messes. However, we sometimes forget that these appliances can also collect dirt, bacteria and even mould, especially if we aren’t careful to maintain them. The process can be as simple as using common household products such as vinegar and bi-carb soda and running through each machine on a normal cycle. Fortunately, newer washer machines and dishwashers these days come with self-cleaning functions that make cleaning your appliances a whole lot easier.

  1. Expired? retired!

Give your fridge a makeover by throwing away expired, leftover foods and stocking up with fresh springtime fruits and vegetables. It’s important to seasonally clean out your fridge to prevent the growth of any harmful bacteria or mould. It’ll also make cooking much easier, with less clutter and time spent looking for that missing ingredient.

  1. Don’t forget about the air in your home

Cleaning or replacing the filter on your air conditioner is one of the most important yet overlooked household chores. Air conditioner’s ducts can build up dirt and dust in winter, making it harder to dispel fresh air and worsening energy efficiency. Smart air conditioners come with a feature that allows you to monitor the status of your filter and advises when it needs changing.

  1. Use a vacuum with HEPA technology to reduce allergens

Reduce springtime allergens from your home by using a vacuum with HEPA technology. HEPA technology captures dust and tiny airborne particles like pet dander and allergens, providing a much more effective clean. We suggest using this feature in combination with different accessories and cleaning tools so you can target other areas beyond carpets. For example, the LG CordZero All-in-One Tower includes a Bedding Power Punch Nozzle that can vacuum dust and allergens off soft furnishings such as curtains, pillows, lamp shades, mattresses and couches.

  1. De-gunk your oven

Cleaning your oven is an essential part of spring cleaning. Nobody wants an oven filled with grease, grime and food debris. Not only can it compromise the flavouring of your baked goods, but it can be a fire hazard. As a first step, use your appliance’s self-cleaning function to remove stubborn, baked-on grime. If your oven doesn’t have this feature, you can clean your oven’s interior using a damp microfibre cloth or sponge, along with some bicarb soda and vinegar.

For those stubborn oven racks, our hack is to wrap each rack up with foil and pop a dishwasher table inside. Next, soak all your oven racks in the bath with hot water for at least 2 hours or overnight for the best result, making sure to first line the bottom of the tub with a towel for protection. Once finished, run a soapy steel wool or scourer over the rack to wipe off all the grime.

  1. Tackle the grout

Cleaning grout between the tile flooring is an often-overlooked chore in our annual spring clean, as it’s a lot more labour-intensive than mopping. However, cleaning grout doesn’t have to be as labour-intensive as you think if you use the right products and techniques! We suggest pouring Long Life Grout Cleaner from Bunnings and lightly scrubbing with a hard bristle hand brush. After wiping the residue with a damp cloth, the grouting looked good as new, without a trace of dirt left between the tiles—this an easy hack to achieve a lighter and brighter bathroom look.

Decluttering tips from professional organisers

The experts at Tidee share their top tips to make decluttering your home much less daunting!

Tip 1: Start small

You have to start somewhere right? Think about the areas in your home that need attention, choose one space and tackle this first. In our experience, if you try and take on all the spaces at once you will likely become overwhelmed and demotivated. Start small to win quick!

Tip 2: Have a vision

Before you get started it is important to have a vision. Imagine how you want the space to look and function. Start building your bank of ideas, social media is a great place to start – lots of inspiration!

Tip 3: It’s all in the planning

Planning is key to your organising success. Before you go crazy buying lots of different organising products, measure the space first – this step is really important! There is nothing worse than buying a whole lot of organising products only to find they don’t fit or work in the space.

Tip 4: Product is key

Try to balance functionality and beauty. These are fundamental components to any space we organise. There’s no point using products that don’t work well for the space. The organising products have a dual purpose – they have to work well and they have to look beautiful.

Tip 5: Lock in the time

Organising requires commitment and part of that commitment is your time. Make sure you set aside at least 3-4 hours straight. There is nothing worse than not finishing the job and having to live with a messy space. Be prepared for things to get messy before they get organised!

Tip 6: Give me some space

Clear a space in the room you are organising so that you have plenty of space to put all the items eg clothes out of the wardrobe or food out of the pantry. To make the sorting process even easier, get 3 empty bins (bags, boxes or baskets) and label these: KEEP, DISCARD & DONATE and sort items into one of these 3 categories.

Tip 7: Moving on out

Get everything out of the space – yes we mean everything! Once everything is out give the space a good wipe down. A clean space is the foundation of any organised space.

Tip 8: So long, farewell

Time for the sorting to begin. Group your items together into the same categories. Once this is done it’s time to get your Marie Kondo on. Do you love the item so much you have to hang onto it or are you better off saying so long farewell to it? Be ruthless otherwise you will simply end up storing things for the sack of it!

Tip 9: Put it back baby

Time to put back all the items you are keeping in their newly assigned homes. A basic rule of thumb is to keep the items you use regularly in prime real estate zones eg vegemite in an easy to reach spot and items you don’t use daily up high.

Tip 10: Label label label

The final step is to make sure your storage containers are labelled. This will act as a visual reminder to put things back in their new home and lets others know where things go. Labelling is key to the organising system being maintained.

Keep your home fresh: how to clean your air conditioner

With arguably the hottest month upon us, there’s no better time to clean your air conditioner filter. This not only removes bacteria and mould buildup, but ensures that your air con is running efficiently. You can’t control air pollutants outside of the home, but cleaning your air conditioner’s filters will ensure that your family starts breathing some cleaner, fresher air.

Mitsubishi have released an easy how-to guide for cleaning your wall mounted split system. On top of cleaning your air conditioning filter once a season, Mitsubishi suggest that you get your air conditioner serviced annually by a licensed professional.

Open your air conditioner

Gently, but firmly pull up the air inlet panel. Lightly hold the knobs on both sides and lift a little to remove the panel forward.

Tip: If the panels are jammed and a bit difficult to open and close, use gentle force so you don’t damage the unit.

Spot the air filters

Wall mounted reverse cycle systems are fitted with three different types of filters. Locate the light orange allergen filter, the orange deodorising filter, and the two mesh air filters, and gently remove them.

Wall mounted cool only systems are fitted with two different types of filters. Remove the two mesh air filters and the green enzyme filter.

Clean and dry

All you need is a sponge and some warm soapy water to clean out any trapped dirt and grime from your filters. Then simply place them somewhere safe in the sun to dry. Sun drying reactivates their cleaning properties.

Tip: To avoid damaging the filters, do not clean them use boiling water or drying them over an open flame.

Done and dusted

Re-installing filters for both reverse cycle or cool only models is stress-free and quick. Hold the filter firmly on both sides and insert securely.

Tefal launches new IXEO Power all-in-one steamer station

After debuting the original IXEO All-In-One in 2019, Tefal has launched its newest combination steaming solution, the IXEO Power, created to replace a garment steamer, a steam generator, and an iron and ironing board.

The Tefal IXEO Power was designed with efficiency in mind, producing an output comparable to that of a boiler steam generator. It can also heat up in just 70 seconds.

It comes with an adjustable Smart Board, which has several different built-in positions. The steam head is half the weight of a traditional steam iron, and the removable water tank can hold up to a litre of water. This main unit and steam head can also be detached from the rest of the system, for maximum portability and ease of use.

The base is set on wheels, meaning that the steamer can be transported around to wherever you need it, or be stored away until you need it next. Accessories include a steam-brush, designed for thick fabrics, and clips to fasten your garments to the built-in board.

IXEO Power also features Smart Protect technology, created to ensure that the temperature is adapted suit all garments – even the most delicate pieces, like silk – without the need to manually adjust any settings.

And with home hygiene at the forefront of everyone’s mind right now, the IXEO Power was designed for increased manoeuvrability so that you can steam and sanitise all around the house. Upholstery, curtains and even bed linen are ideal candidates for steaming, as the power of steam kills up to 99.9% of bacteria.

Plant-based cleaning brand Koala Eco breaks into the US

“We were constantly on the hunt for safe, affordable, toxic-free cleaning products that would not only make our home smell naturally fabulous but would actually work. We felt our sons, and pets, shouldn’t have to hold their breath in order to avoid absorbing chemicals every time we cleaned the family home,” says Jess Bragdon who, with this in mind, co-founded the Australian cleaning product brand Koala Eco

Jess and Andrew
Koala Eco founders Jess Bragdon and Paul Davidson

Launched in 2017, with the help of her co-founder husband Paul Davidson, the brand now boasts over 800 stockists across multiple countries with a US expansion next on the list. Not bad for a little Aussie start-up!

Made in Australia, Jess worked with a Sydney lab and chemists to formulate and develop the product line-up which encompasses everything from kitchen and floor cleaner to hand sanitiser, vegetable wash, bamboo cleaning brushes and more. Importantly, the range has been independently lab-tested and proven to have the capacity to kill 99.99 per cent of germs, viruses and bacteria which is obviously very important in times like these.

Packaged in 100 percent post-consumer-recycled plastic bottles, the products are free of synthetic fragrance and colouring, allergens and irritants and draw on the medicinal and therapeutic properties of Australian native plants. “Species such as eucalyptus, lemon myrtle and peppermint have natural antiseptic and astringent qualities and have been harvested for millennia by Australia’s Indigenous people,” says Jess.

Essential oils are derived from the bark and leaves of native Australian trees and plants like Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon Scented Iron Bark, Lemon Myrtle, peppermint, lavender and rosemary. “We also use essential oil extracted from the peel of citrus species like grapefruit and mandarin.”

A personal favourite of mine, this product smells amazing!

“For example, Eucalyptus Australiana (which we use in our Stainless Steel + Chrome Cleaner) is a great antiseptic, while Mentha Piperata (Peppermint) is a natural insect repellent which is why we put it in our Glass + Window Cleaner, as well as several other products in our range. To these essential oils we add ingredients like vinegar, sugar-based biodegradable alcohol and bicarbonate soda, plant-derived solubilisers and surfactants, and purified water,” says Jess.

And aside from smelling fabulous, the products look rather gorgeous too which is no doubt due to Jess’ background. She once ran a floral design business with her twin sister Adrienne (in her native US), before meeting her Australian husband in New York City and making the move down under.

“Initially I lived in Perth where I worked at the cultural organisation FORM. I had the privilege of working with many designers, and also collecting some of their work,” says Jess who put her design eye to good use when creating the brand’s beautiful labels.

But in the biggest coup for the brand to date, it’s expanding into the US this year with a Californian office currently in set-up phase. “It’s been an ambition of ours from the beginning and the US business will run on the same principles as the Australian operation, with mail order and in stores too.” Jess will continue to develop new products from the couple’s Sydney base.

“The pandemic this year has made all of us realise good hygiene means so much more than cleanliness; it’s a way of helping to prevent spread of germs. When we clean and care for our homes with products made from natural ingredients, it’s a form of self-care that impacts not only on our physical, but also mental health.”

Jess’ best DIY home cleaning tips

  • Olive or coconut oil and lemon on an old cloth for polishing wooden furniture is a great natural option, and easily accessible from the pantry.
  • A few drops of essential oil in the bathroom sink, tub or toilet gives it a fresh aroma – try mandarin or eucalyptus.
  • Add old citrus peels to vinegar, baking soda and water for a natural cleaner for bench tops that is safe for your family.

Cleaning solution: dissolvable tablets are a game changer for the planet

Change never looked (or smelled) so good, with the launch of an Australian-first range of tablet-based cleaning supplies which you add to warm tap water in any spray bottle. Launched this Plastic Free July, the idea is to disrupt the industry by putting an end to cleaning sprays in single-use bottles.

Multi-purpose and glass cleaning tablets simply dissolve in 300ml of warm water in CHANGE’s reusable spray bottles or any empty spray bottle you have at home. The idea’s so simple and brilliant, you’ve got to wonder why nobody’s done it before!

As well as the multi-purpose and glass cleaning tablets, there’s a deep cleanse tablet for water bottles, as well as a lavender scented washing machine cleaner tablet which you simply throw in on an empty wash cycle. They’re great value too, with multi-packs of four at $7.95 or eight at $12.95 (that’s less than $1.65 per bottle of spray cleaner).

“Single-use plastic is slowly suffocating our planet, with the average Australian using up to 130kg of plastic per year and only 12% of that being recycled,” says CHANGE founder Simon Karlik.

He has already spent more than a decade disrupting the market with products designed to eliminate single use plastic through sister company Cheeki – the first company to introduce stainless steel water bottles to Australia.

Multi-purpose tablet dissolving in water

Although Simon believes Australians are fundamentally concerned about protecting the environment, there is a lack of easy-to-use cleaning products that are affordable, effective and dramatically reduce the excessive waste of single-use plastic.

After 18 months of research and product testing, CHANGE is proud to launch Australia’s first range of dissolvable tablets to meet a range of cleaning needs. “We really hope this sparks a change across the industry,” Simon says.

“This is quite simply a smarter way to clean that bypasses the current model which involves basically buying a lot of water and then discarding the bottle and trigger head after just one use,” says Simon.

Bathroom cleaning checklist for a healthy space

While COVID-induced lockdown is slowly easing across the country, the time we’ve all been spending at home has given rise to a greater focus on keeping our living spaces healthy and hygienic.

As the one room in your home that provides moments of escape, rejuvenation and relaxation, the bathroom is a space we want to keep as clean as possible. These five tips will help you prevent the build-up of dirt and mould in your bathroom, so it can continue to deliver blissful experiences throughout our extra time at home and beyond.

1. Watch out for tight spots

Hidden spaces to watch out for include:

  • Corners and tight spots where water and moisture can build up. Water and moisture attract dirt and promote mould. Avoid mess from the get-go by keeping these spaces dry.
  • Your shower floor and walls. Invest in a shower squeegee and remember to use it! When it comes to mould build up, it’s best to be proactive rather than reactive.
  • Around your taps. Dental floss is a handy tool for removing grime from those hard-to-reach places. Simply floss in the crevices, such as in between the tap and basin to remove build up.

2. Use mild disinfectants

Keep your taps, tiles and bathtub clean by using mild, ammonia-free detergents. Not only are they less damaging than harsh cleaning products such as bleach, but they are better for the environment and for the people using the space too.

3. Don’t forget about the drains

Our top drain care tip is about prevention, rather than correction. To avoid having to deal with a clogged drain, we recommend a simple, regular routine:

  • Pour some boiling hot water down the drain, followed by a cup of baking soda.
  • Add a cup of white vinegar and another cup of hot water, then leave for 10-to-15 minutes.
  • Flush out with water from the tap or outlet.

This useful trick uses plumbing-friendly products to prevent build-up from soap residue and hair, keeping your drains sparkling clean and removing unwanted scents from entering the bathroom.

4. Keep the air flowing

Our top tip for keeping your bathroom fresh day-to-day is to make sure that you keep it well ventilated.

Cracking open a window or using the exhaust fan, especially when you shower, lets air move through the space and prevents moisture, removing mould and mildew.

5. Embrace storage solutions

Is one of your goals to embrace clutter-free living?

Create a practical storage system that works for you by investing some time into thinking about what you use the most and where it should live. A little up-front organisation will keep your bathroom tidy for years to come, as clutter can seriously reduce the zen factor in any room of the home.

This is where it gets really impressive and useful if you ask me. Using the iRobot HOME App, the vacuuming robots are ready to clean on demand from anywhere, any time. Each model can be scheduled to clean up to seven times a week from the familiar mobile device interface, which is available for Android and iOS devices. The app also provides information about cleaning status, customised tips and direct access to customer support. I’ll highlight some of the important features of the two new products!

Got pets? The new Roomba® 890 features dual, counter-rotating Tangle-Free Extractors like my Roomba 980. These extractors are made of durable rubber tread that grabs dirt and hair from any floor type, while reducing hair tangles and brush maintenance (I feel like this could be useful in our non-pet household too, where there always seems to be way too much black and blonde hair on the bathroom floor!).

A full suite of sensors and low profile design enables the Roomba 890 to navigate under furniture and around clutter. A Gen 2 motor produces five times the air power over previous generation Roombas , while the patented AeroForce 3-Stage Cleaning System uses a combination of agitation, extraction and suction to efficiently move dirt and debris from the floor to the dustbin. I have to say, this robot isn’t quiet, which reassures me, because it sounds like it’s doing a proper job!

Roomba heading under my toddler’s bed. Rather him than me!

At the end of its cleaning job, Roomba 890 returns to its charging station to recharge. The Roomba® 690 allows customers to experience the luxury of automated cleaning at a more affordable price. Valued at $849, the Roomba 690 gets to work, seamlessly navigating around clutter and under furniture. As with the Roomba 800 and 900 Series, the Roomba 690 uses a patented 3-Stage Cleaning System to efficiently clean carpet, rugs and hard floors. At just 9.3cm tall, the Roomba 690 fits under most furniture and kickboards, so dirt has no place to hide.

Although you can of course set Roomba to clean while you’re out of the house (thank goodness, because Seb is terrified of it!), I work from home and am often here, but I’m actually loving hearing the robot doing the housework in the background! The best! Not to mention emptying all that dust out is so satisfying! Evidence!!

The Roomba® 690 is available for purchase immediately in major electrical retail stores ($849 RRP). The Roomba® 637 ($599 RRP) and Roomba® 890 ($1099 RRP) will be available soon in major electrical retail stores.  My Roomba 980 is available for purchase at major electrical retail stores as well as online.

Can you believe iRobot created the home robot cleaning category with the introduction of its Roomba® Vacuuming Robot 15 years ago in 2002?!

Disclosure: I was gifted an iRobot Roomba to try it for myself. I have not been paid for this post and, as ever, my thoughts on this product are honest and my own.

6 tips for nailing this year’s spring (summer!?) clean

Spring cleaning is one of those things that beforehand sounds horrible, during is even worse, but after? After you feel phenomenal… it’s a bit like exercise really! So to make the process easier we spoke to Jessica Bragdon, founder of natural cleaning range Koala Eco about her top tips for nailing this year’s big clean (and yes you should still do it, even though it’s nearly summer).

Cull before you clean

Your spring clean is a great time to get rid of any clutter or items around the house that you don’t need or want. Once you’ve done that, take everything off the shelves and surfaces and brush them all down with a feather duster. Then use a dust-brush or crevice tool on a vacuum to reach the tight spots and wipe all surfaces down. Once the cleaning spree is complete, return your belongings (only the ones you wish to keep) back to their rightful spots.

Work from the top down

When it comes to dusting, always work from the top of the room down, finishing off by vacuuming the dust that settles on the floor. Remember not to neglect hard-to-reach places such as the tops of ceiling fans and window casings.

Kitchen capers

Attack the stubborn surface grime on benchtops and kitchen cupboards with tea tree or eucalyptus oil or a solvent-free degreaser. Each of these options can also be used to remove stubborn bacteria that resides in fridges and microwaves, thanks to the powerful yet natural properties of essential oils. Make sure to give the kitchen bin a good rinse and wipe down too, it’s a dirty job but worth doing a few times a year, at least! Finish up by mopping the floors with one-to-two tablespoons of soap mixed in a bucket of warm water.

Don’t forget the furniture

Furnishings and upholstery can house an endless supply of dust so remember to take cushions outside and give them a gentle beat. If there are stains, wash them as per the care instructions and use your crevice tools to clean between cracks and under seat cushions. Likewise, many draperies and curtains are machine washable, so check labels before giving them a good wash and vacuum. Use beeswax to clean wooden furniture and blinds. Simply melt it and mix it with a few drizzles of olive oil and a few drops of essential oils (for example peppermint) and then leave it to cool before rubbing into the wood.

The bathroom blitz

Spray and scrub the bath, shower, basin and toilet. Plus wipe down air vents, light switches and fixtures, as well as things like toothbrush holders and soap dishes where lots of bacteria can lurk. Bicarb soda is a wonderful ingredient to unclog and clean drains and shine up chrome and silver bathroom taps and fixtures; to clean sinks and fixtures simply sprinkle the bicarb soda directly onto the surface or onto a soft sponge and begin scrubbing in circular motions. Finally, use a glass cleaner to give the mirrors and shower screens a super sparkly shine.

Clean living

The living room isn’t a place that we ordinarily think needs much cleaning beyond a good vacuum, but if you’re going for gold start with dusting the ceiling, floor moldings and wall corners. Next wipe down the walls, ceilings and light switches with soap mixed with water, which can also be used to polish wooden furniture. Finally it’s time to clean the windows. For a quick and easy homemade window cleaner, mix in a spray bottle 50% white vinegar and 50% tap water. Simply spray the solution directly onto the window and wipe with newspaper. After cleaning the windows both inside and out, give each space a good vacuum, not forgetting to dust lamps and vacuum lampshades.

— Koala Eco boast a sleek-looking, highly versatile range of chemical-free, eco-friendly and biodegradable cleaning products. The range uses high concentrations of Australian essential oils, combined with plant-derived ingredients to provide all-natural cleaning power for every room and surface.

Review: The new Dyson V8 cordless vacuums

As a fan of the previous V6 Dyson cordless, I couldn’t wait to give the new and improved version, the V8, a spin. And after weeks of rigorous use (who said neat freak?), I’m totally in love. The latest design has rectified anything that was slightly letting down the old version.

dball

While it’s a still lightweight 2.6kg, the digital V8 motor, which can spin at up to 110,000rpm, boasts powerful fade-free suction. “We’ve spent more than a decade and over £250m developing our small and powerful digital motors,” says James Dyson. “Our latest generation motor sits at the heart of the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum. It’s the result of 18 months research and development and 500,000 hours of testing.” That’s a lot of testing!

What I love most about the cordless Dyson is how easy it is to quickly clean my entire apartment without having to worry about plugging and unplugging or dragging a heavier vacuum from room to room. The motor and battery are positioned near the hand which shifts the centre of gravity, making the cleaning end of the vacuum much lighter, so it’s easy to clean up top and down below (I love using it on ceiling cobwebs!). What I used to find frustrating was how the V6 battery could die before I’d managed to do the whole place (I like a challenge but 20 minutes wasn’t cutting it). Not anymore! This version will keep going for up to 40 minutes (that’s double the V6) which is massive for a powerful, cord free machine. It’s also quieter, which is a consideration when you live in an apartment.

As important as the motor is the Dyson cleaner head technology. A direct-drive head removes ground-in dirt (at our place that means toddler crumbs and sand, for example) and pet hair from carpets, while a soft roller head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously. I haven’t had a chance to try them all, but I can tell you the mini motorised tool makes vacuuming my navy velvet sofa (which shows every last bit of fluff) a walk in the park! The new design quick-release catch makes it even easier to swap between attachments. It still has the ‘Max’ function, a turbo boost if you will, for tougher jobs, but bear in mind this uses the battery up quicker.

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-8-56-47-am

My other pet hate about the V6 was how awkward, and sometimes messy, it could be to empty the machine into the bin. This has also been fixed. Hooray! The Dyson V8 features a new bin-emptying mechanism. As the bin is emptied, a rubber collar slides down the shroud, scraping dirt off. This enables you to hygienically drive out trapped dust and debris in a single action, with no need to touch the dirt. Great news for asthmatics and people with allergies, in particular. The bin also has a bigger capacity which means you have to empty it less often.

Another new feature I appreciate is the battery runtime indicator, so running out of power no longer comes as a nasty surprise!

The Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum includes the direct-drive cleaner head and the soft roller cleaner head, in addition to the mini motorised tool, the combination tool, crevice tool and mini soft dusting brush. RRP $849. The Dyson V8 Animal vacuum includes the direct-drive cleaner head in addition to the mini motorised tool, the combination tool, crevice tool and mini soft dusting brush. Recommended retail price is $749. Available at major electrical retailers and www.dyson.com.au. Both machines include a 2-year hassle-free warranty on parts and labour.

FUN FACTS

  • Dyson sold its first cord-free vacuum, the handheld DC16, in 2006. So 2016 marks 10 years of Dyson cord-free technology.
  • In 2016, Dyson will produce 8.8 million digital motors – that’s approximately one every 3.5 seconds.
  • 376 robots are used to assemble Dyson digital motors, as even the most dextrous human hand isn’t precise enough: the smallest manufacturing tolerance is +/- 3 microns, which is approximately a quarter of the thickness of a human hair.
  • Dyson has committed to a £1.5bn investment in future technology and will launch 100 new products around the world in the next four years.

–Disclosure: Dyson gifted me a vacuum for the purpose of this review. Positive coverage was not guaranteed, these are my own honest views and these words have not been approved by the brand.

Win a year’s supply of Organic Choice cleaning products!

Sponsored by Aware Environmental

I admit it, I’m a clean freak. Regular readers will know this is nothing new! And there’s nothing I love more than a clean and tidy home, it comes as no surprise that good looking, good smelling, good value cleaning products, in beautiful, neutral, modern packaging that looks nice enough to leave out (perhaps even deliberately!) get me more excited than they probably should do! And now that I have a toddler in the house, into everything and eating things off the floor, non-toxic, earth-friendly products are much more of a priority for me.

organic-choice

Introducing the new brand Organic Choice, which three lucky readers are going to win a year’s supply of! We’re not just talking cleaning products, but candles too.

This beautiful range has been developed right here in Australia, from the belief that products can be both effective, and sourced from sustainable, natural ingredients. Organic Choice is definitely filling a gap in the market. These environmentally friendly, sustainable household products are not only a healthier alternative to other cleaning products, but they have modern, non-garish packaging that looks great displayed in your home! Better yet, they are half the price of  competitors that tick all those boxes and conveniently available exclusively at your local Coles.

20161101_105457-1

20161101_091503

We’re talking $5.50 for a 500ml Multipurpose Cleaner, $5 for a 500ml Dishwashing Liquid (it’s great to be able to leave these out and close at hand, especially when they’re not ugly!) up to $15 for a lidded Candle made with pure soy wax and essential oils.

20161101_092338

There’s a large range too, also incorporating Fridge, Dishwasher & Bin Cleaner (I didn’t know I needed it until now either!), Shower and Vanity Cleaner (I’ve been road testing this and it seems to tackle glass and mirrors well too), and Air Freshener in a pump action bottle.

The packaging looks like dark green glass but is in fact recyclable plastic. It looks expensive and natural and will blend in well in your interiors. The products are not tested on animals and are palm oil free. And they all really work! I’ve been road testing them at home for you for a few weeks now.

20161101_094442

Now let’s talk about the fragrances. Cleaning is certainly a much more enjoyable (okay, maybe the word is therapeutic!) experience when it leaves you smelling of essential oils rather than chemicals and bleach, right? We’re talking scents like West Indian Lime and Coconut, Lemongrass and Cedarwood (my personal fave) and Grapefruit and Pomegranate. I’ve tried a lot of candles in my time and these are great. The French Pear and Cinnamon Bark is perfect for Christmas and I love the Lemongrass and Cedarwood one burning in my kitchen.

Organic Choice is made right here in Australia by Aware Environmental, also behind well known brands like Orange Power, supported by Planet Ark Australia.

Review: The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Vacuum

Those of you who are regular readers will know I’m a total neat freak and I love nothing more than to take the latest cleaning products or gadgets for a spin. No really, this stuff excites me! I also have a long time love affair with Dyson, having grown up in Wiltshire, England, where James Dyson opened his first factory. As a local newspaper reporter back in the day, one of my most exciting assignments was to cover the launch of the until then top secret Dyson washing machine. I’ve been a Dyson fan since I bought a reconditioned one on first moving out of home (my trainee reporter salary didn’t quite stretch to brand new) and have been one ever since.

CY22_IRNK-R_33A4_CMYK_${36428300}

I bought the handy Dyson V6 Animal last year and it gets a serious workout. I love how portable, flexible and lightweight it is. But at the end of the day, a battery charge only lasts a max of 20-odd minutes and you really can’t have it all. So while this will always be the go-to in my house for a quick vacuum, it’s got nothing on this powerful new beast, the Cinetic Big Ball.

Of course, like all Dysons, it looks pretty cool. While some people say that doesn’t matter, I think it’s an added bonus. And it’s not just aesthetics, it’s clever design too, which will always be a winner with me. While some barrel vacuum cleaners can be cumbersome and frustrating, Dyson engineers set out to solve some common problems with this one: “The problem with some barrel vacuums is that they can go off on a tangent and topple, leaving you to walk back over the floor you’ve just cleaned to right the machine. We challenged our engineers to refine the barrel format, to solve this problem and others. The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball barrel is the vacuum that self-rights when toppled. Further advances include hygienic dirt ejection and an articulated handle,” says James Dyson.

CY22_IRNK-R_32A4_CMYK_${36428202}

It’s the only vacuum with no maintenance and no loss of suction, as there are no filters to wash or replace and no bags to buy. It self-rights when toppled because its components are put together in a spherical array, with the heaviest nearest to the floor. Placing them inside a curved body with a low centre of gravity means that whenever the vacuum is displaced, gravitational forces will automatically return it to its upright resting position. It can turn on the spot and follow you effortlessly around the home. This is great for a clumsy person with little patience (that’s me).

As the bin is emptied, a silicone collar slides down the shroud. This scrapes off trapped dirt or debris, driving them out. There’s no need to touch the dirt or reach inside the bin (something I often have to do with the Animal if I’m honest. And yuck!).

CY22_IRNK-R_34A4_CMYK_${36460138}

As well as being a neat freak I’m also in total denial about having a stylish home and a toddler. Case in point: our newly purchased cream wool rug which shows every speck of dirt. The extreme suction (it’s so powerful, it takes some getting used to, and the toddler is scared of it, but again, you can’t have it all!), removes everything and leaves it looking all perfect, fluffed up and like new. Hoorah! (And did you know almost every small spill can be removed with baby wipes? It’s true.).

There are so many more cool features to this machines, like the attachment with anti-static carbon fibre filaments to help remove dust from hard floors. And an active base plate automatically adjusts the cleaner head height, raising and lowering to seal in suction across carpets, rugs and hard floors.

If you’re a true Dyson fan like me, you’ll know that back in the seventies, James Dyson revolutionised wheelbarrows by replacing the wheel with a ball. So it’s kind of like coming full circle really.

Available now from all major retailers. RRP from $699. For more information.

Fun fact: The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball barrel was in development for more than 2.5 years and more than 50 design engineers produced more than 1,000 prototypes of it.

Disclosure: Dyson gifted me with this vacuum for the purposes of this review. Positive coverage was not guaranteed.

Interview: One Melbourne woman’s quest to make sponges stylish

It was something of a lightbulb moment. While washing the dishes one morning, molecular biologist Natasha Malkov realised there was a gap in the market for simple and stylish sponges – enter BARKLY BASICS.

unnamed-7

Chevron kitchen sponge, $6.95 (two-pack)

“I was washing the dishes when I looked down at the bright yellow sponge in the sink and thought that there must exist a sponge with a bit more style!” says Natasha, who has had an interesting career trajectory to say the least.

“I am a molecular biologist by profession with a Ph.D from the University of Melbourne. My Ph.D was based on breast cancer research and I’m glad to have contributed to the jigsaw puzzle of finding a cure,” says Natasha who always had a creative bent and appetite for new product design.

unnamed-2

Cellulose sponge, $6.40 (pack of three)

After researching the market, Natasha discovered that there wasn’t a single design-driven sponge on the market. “I set out to make the idea become a reality and it has taken over a year to develop the products.”

We love the range’s simple design and monochromatic colour scheme. “The BARKLY BASICS customer is one that appreciates that less is more. My products are simple in design and appearance and blend in with your kitchen rather than stand out,” says Natasha.

unnamed-3

Scourer pad dish stick, $8.50

With myriad stockists including 13 boutique gift stores in Australia, five boutique supermarkets in Melbourne and international retailers in Hong Kong and New Zealand, the future is looking bright for the innovative brand. “We expect to have many more stockists come on board this year,” says Natasha.

And of her design and business mantra? “Sometimes the simplest things are overlooked. Being mindful allows you to hone in on the simple things and sometimes opportunities present themselves,” says Natasha.

Amen to that.
