Samsung study reveals changing face of Australian home

The results are in! Samsung have done some hefty research into the lifestyles of Aussie households to discover what trends really affect our lives and how we use technology to improve them.

20150825_Samsung_SHOT09_0397

Out of the thousand that participated in the study, more than half (62%) identified saving money on bills as the most important benefit of a digitally connected home, followed by energy savings (45%) and convenience (43%).

Samsung also found that the average household throws away more than $1,000 worth of food each year, with NSW wasting about $1,475, almost double that of QLD! I know my household is a definite culprit. Also, as we’re coming up to the festive season, we spend two and a half times our average monthly food bill on Christmas entertaining (that’s a lot of honey glazed ham and prawns).

When it comes to entertainment, 55% prefer entertaining at home because it’s a good money saver, and 45% say it’s more sociable, not to mention flexible.

In terms of cleaning, 12 hours per week is spent on housework, and 33% believe technology will make their household chores easier in the future.

Utilising these results, Samsung have released their Australians@HOME range to help households with everyday chores through Wi-Fi enabled home devices that can be personalised to specific needs. Products include the POWERbot VR9200 with vision mapping ($1,799), Ultra Large Capacity Washing Machine with auto detergent dispenser ($3,999), Chef Collection fridge with built-in tray for marinating meat ($7,999), and Chef Collection Vapour Oven with a full touch LCD screen ($2,999).

Bosch’s powerful, robust and easy-to-use pressure washers

I honestly find pressure washing so satisfying. Insofar as I’d actually request to do it as a child! So Bosch’s newly released, extensive high-pressure washer range, has, rather embarrassingly, got me reminiscing about the good old days!

hhaqt179

Featuring the powerful and robust AQT 45-14x, the AQT 42-13 and the AQT 33-11 (a different model for every price point) each pressure washer is already assembled and immediately ready to use. Made from high-quality equipment, they are compatible with a range of versatile accessories that can be stored on the tool, such as lances, hoses and brushes. And thanks to quick SDS click connections, the tool itself and the attachments are easily assembled in seconds and ready to be used.
Ensemble_AQT_45-14X_06008A7400
The most advanced pressure washer: AQT 45-14x

The range of accessories is extensive, making the washer extremely versatile. The standard AQT 42-13 comes with the Deluxe Patio Cleaning attachment with an extended handle and four different nozzles, a fixed fan jet nozzle, a rotary jet nozzle and a high pressure detergent nozzle. The AQT 45-14x is even more flexible in its range of operations. Included in the pack is three cleaning lances; a variable fan jet lance, a rotary lance, a 90-degree nozzle and a high pressure detergent nozzle.

The AQT 45-14 X and the AQT 42-13 also include a telescopic handle which can be extended to a height of 90 centimetres. Transporting the washers is easy with the 18 centimetre rubber wheels whilst the integrated base plate allows the washer to be stabilised when winding up the hose into the hose reel. Both models include an auto-stop and self-priming function allowing the motor and pump to stop when the gun switch is released. This ensures water will never escape unintentionally.

hhaqt191

The AQT 33-11 is clever and compact – a lightweight tool to get the job done. This is the tool for basic and occasional cleaning work. At a weight of 4.5kg with the fixed fan nozzle, it is able to be conveniently picked up and transported to the desired place of work. Thanks to the energy-efficient auto stop system in the tool, energy is delivered only when needed in order to preserve power. Use the AQT 33-11 for any task from hosing down your bike to washing down windows and patio furniture.

The new Bosch pressure washer range will be available at Super Cheap Auto from the end of this month, with prices ranging from $129-to-$499.

The Good Guys dish out some clever dishwasher tips

Anyone with the TV turned on lately (ahem, I don’t deny couch potato-ing during The Bachelor) may have come across the recent Finish Australia ad, which goes a little something like this:

“Breakfast: dishes. Dinner: dishes. Marriage: dishes. Divorce: dishes. Sleeping: dishes. Not sleeping: dishes. Life: dishes. Death: dishes. Existence: dishes, dishes, dishes.”

Morale of the story: life is a huge load of dishes, and dishwashers are the solution to making life a little easier.

Asko White Electronic Dishwasher
Asko White Electronic Dishwasher

One of my biggest pet hates is seeing pans, plates, mugs and cutlery pile up higher than the pyramids of Giza. Invest in a dishwasher, and all that dish caused stress disappears (unless you’re stuck with awfully lazy roommates – as far as I’m aware they haven’t invented a self-loading dishwasher yet).

Buying a dishwasher is all well and good, but choosing the right one for your lifestyle and needs might require some research.  Luckily, The Good Guys Dishwasher experts have pulled together a few tips to make the choice easier:

1. Size Have your measuring tape handy because you need to buy a dishwasher that fits perfectly into the space you have set aside. The guessing game is not fun when you end up with a dishwasher two centimetres too wide, so make sure you get your calculations correct from the start.

2. Capacity An average family usually requires a dishwasher that has a 12-place setting capacity. This means it has room for 12 dinner plates, 12 soup plates, 12 tea cups and saucers, 12 dessert plates, 12 tumblers, 12 individual knives, forks, soup spoons, teaspoons and dessert spoons. If you’re a smaller household (or have a grandmother who insists on washing dishes by hand) you probably won’t need something that big.

Fisher & Paykel Stainless Steel Double Dishwasher
Fisher & Paykel Stainless Steel Double Dishwasher

3. Type and Style The size of your dishwasher depends on the type of dishwasher you chose and there are three main options:

–  Full sized, which fits 12 to 14 place settings, is great for those with a large family or for those you just love to throw a large dinner party every now and again

– Slimline, will fit 9 to 10 place settings, with space left over for a pot and pan

– Compact, fits 6 or less place settings and is best for any singles living the life

Aside from the size, you should also consider between a freestanding (suitable for kitchens with already available spaces) or built-in style (usually fitted with a unit door that blends in with the rest of the décor).

4. Energy efficiency Dishwashers come with both energy and water ratings. Obviously, the more stars, the more energy efficient the appliance is. Some believe that hand-washing dishes saves water, but in most cases dishwashers actually use less water (ahem, grandma!).

Bosch White Freestanding Dishwasher
Bosch White Freestanding Dishwasher

5. Features Dishwashers come with a range of features, including:

– Wash cycles, with regular dishwashers having normal, delicate and heavy cycles. Some have additional programs, such as extra-hot washes for added hygiene or high-speed settings that get small loads finished fast.

– Drying cycle, because who wants to dry the dishes themselves?

– Delayed start is an energy-saving feature that can have your dishwasher start the cycle only during off-peak times.

– Self-cleaning filters are my personal favourite. Just as the name suggests, some higher end dishwashers clean themselves. Although pricier, it saves you the hassle of manually emptying out the filter.

If you’ve suddenly developed an itch for a new dishwasher, check out The Good Guys for more information.

Smart and stylish: the latest dust buster from Electrolux

Ever pulled out your old vacuum and, after labouring away with the big, awkward thing, wondered who on earth could design something not only so bulky, but just plain ugly? Well the people at Electrolux probably wondered the same thing. And from all that wondering, Ergorapido was born.

18V Steel Blue RRP $359
18V Steel Blue RRP $359

The latest Electrolux Ergorapido 2-in-1 vacuum boasts better cleaning of both floors and furniture, while simultaneously looking stylish and sophisticated.

Features include a 180-degree swivel nozzle and large rear wheels, allowing you to steer around tight corners and under furniture easily, and a detachable handheld unit for shelves and upholstery. The vacuum is also self-standing, which means you can “accidentally” leave the stylish airbrushed metallic inlays, streamline contours and clear nozzle panels out on display.

14.4V White RRP $279

When you’re finished, just step on the pedal and whoosh – all those tangled fibres and dirt are sucked into the dust cup. 2-in-1? More like a million-in-one.

6 spring storage tips from Temple & Webster

Spring is finally here and, while we’re more than ready to ditch our heavy winter coats for a far lighter (and funner) sense of style, the issue of where to store our woolly warmers for the next six months can pose an issue – especially for those tight on space.

Temple & Webster - Coffee TableLuckily, Temple & Webster’s styling guru Jess Bellef has some hot tips to revitalise your hibernating winter home and maximise spring storage.

“Clever storage ideas are a quick and easy way to give your home a seasonal refresh without having to spend a fortune,” she said. “Start thinking about what you can minimise in your living area, bathroom or even office to increase space and give that fresh, makeover feeling.”

Temple & Webster - Floating Shelves1. Minimise the clutter in your home office by choosing storage boxes in the same colour throughout the space. This can create a sense of harmony in a space that is often cluttered with paperwork and technology.

2. Choose furniture options that have storage incorporated into the design. For example, an ottoman that can store your woolly jumpers, or a bed with drawers underneath that can hold your coats and scarves. Perfect for hibernating those winter clothes!

3. Keep large straw baskets handy in the lounge room. In one quick sweep you can gather up all the toys off the floor. They’re also a neat way to store extra blankets and cushions.

Temple _ Webster - Baskets

4. Floating shelves are an easy way to create more storage surface area without taking up valuable floor space.  They are great for a home office or bedroom and they are available in a wide range of finishes and sizes.

5. Be disciplined and ruthless when it comes to getting rid of items you no longer need. Retire items you haven’t touched all winter – this cleanout is good for the soul and will inspire you to stay more organised. Drop items off at your local Vinnies or sell them on Gumtree.

6. Organise your kitchen according to usage. Minimise the clutter on your benchtop by storing away appliances that you rarely use. If you find after time you haven’t pulled out the ice cream/popcorn/hotdog maker, that’s a cue to get rid of it.

New signature scent and hand sanitiser from Bondi Wash

If you’re anything like me, you love beautifully scented personal hygiene products, but cringe when you flip them over only to find Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulphate staring back at you amongst the rest of the dreadfully long list of dubious ingredients.

10296026_738552466250465_5013302994338991875_o

Luckily for us, Australian made and owned Bondi Wash is different. And they’ve released a new hand sanitiser (Jen’s tried it and it’s now a staple in Sebastian’s nursery for between nappy changes!) and signature scent just in time for the warmer seasons.

Feb 2015Available in Tasmanian Pepper & Lavender, Sydney Peppermint & Rosemary, and Lemon Tea Tree & Mandarin, the antibacterial hand spray kills 99.9% of germs and contains only a smidgen of alcohol. It’s not a gel (gel sanitisers can be pretty sticky and gross) and has a unique spray function, which means it can also be used on hard surfaces.

Soap Bar FSW 100_LoThe limited edition Fragonia & Sandalwood is an antibacterial bush oil with delicate floral notes, blended with oils such as ginger and patchouli for a calming, natural scent. It comes in a hand wash, mist spray and 100g mini soap bar.

11999553_738990279540017_2536342235154528835_o

These products not only smell great, but they’re also plant-based, non-toxic, biodegradable, free from nasty ingredients, and even come in décor-worthy bottles. Bondi Wash, you’re spoiling us.

Other products include a body wash, mist spray, bench spray and there’s even a range for dogs. Check them out online.

6 cleaning tips to help you spring back to life this season

With the doom and gloom of winter finally drawing to a close, it’s time to spring back in to action in both your mind and home. During the colder months we have a tendency to turn a blind eye to the accumulating dust and rug up with a good book rather than a vacuum cleaner.

Spring Clean 2 copyJordana Thirlwall, co-founder of Supercheap Storage, has come up with some handy tips on bringing order back to your house and mind this spring.

Spring Clean 11. De-clutter and store Miscellaneous items here, there and everywhere? Take some time to de-clutter the house and dispose of those winter knick-knacks. But, as the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, so if you don’t need it, donate or recycle. It’s good for the soul.

2. What’s in the wardrobe? Keeping warm often leads to multiplying your wardrobe and, come spring, it can appear rather overwhelming. So, why not sort your clothes by the seasons and store away those woolly pieces. Some say it’s a form of therapy.

3. Pick up a paintbrush A fresh coat of paint can not only help clear your mind, leaving you feeling rejuvenated, but also freshen up the darkest of rooms with the simple stroke of a brush.

4. Clean out the pantry In the colder months we tend to eat more “comfort” foods: chips over fish, pasta over salad, ice cream over fruit. Going on a spring detox and flushing out those winter toxins hidden in the kitchen can leave both your body and mind feeling rejuvenated, as well as your pantry.

5. Detox the mind, body and mould Too many nights curled up with a bottle of wine in the winter months? Time to give the body a break and use that leftover liquor for cleaning purposes. The toxins in vodka will eliminate mould and have your bathroom looking brand new again.

6. Call in reinforcements There are many companies who will store belongings for as little or as long as need be. Do some research and shop around for the best quote. It is important to go with companies who focus on security and reliability so belongings are looked after and are easily accessible.

Getting your bond back: 5 end of lease cleaning tips

By Jayde Ferguson

When you rent a new apartment or house, the landlord is likely to require a rental bond or a security deposit to ensure that any damages will be paid for by the tenant. So, how do you make sure that the cleanliness of your house lives up to your landlord’s standards when you move out?

house-cleaning

It starts when you move in — it is your responsibility to record the condition of the apartment before you have brought any of your belongings inside. The property condition report acts as an agreement between you and your landlord as to the condition of the property when you get there, and the more accurate your property condition report, the better off you will be when you move out. In addition to a written property report, taking photos can help. If it all sounds like too much effort you can get a third party company to inspect the property on your behalf. These types of companies know the exact traps and pitfalls to look out for.

Take care of messes as they happen

If you generally live clean, your chances of getting your rental bond back are good. Remember to get rid of old food, minimise clutter, and clean up stains as soon as you spill — before they set. If you need it, get an air filter, a humidifier, or even plants that can help filter your air.

If possible, don’t have a pet. If you have one, make sure to clean up after pets as soon as possible, from accidents in the house to shedding hair or fur.

Home improvements

Remember that if things go wrong with the house, it is the landlord’s responsibility to fix them. It is in your best interests to call your landlord when things go wrong so that you can avoid paying out of pocket, or making things worse than they were to begin with.

If you do make your own improvements to the property, take before and after photos, keep receipts and inform your landlord as soon as possible.

Follow the terms of your lease

Spring-Cleaning
Photo credit: Get Healthy With Danita

This is one simple thing that people tend to overlook in some ways. While a lease requires payment of rent regularly in exchange for the keys to the property, it also may have clauses regarding other things that can affect the quality of the property when you move out.

If your apartment does not allow smoking, choosing to do so inside can require additional cleaning and costs when you move out. Some leases don’t allow pets, and will charge extra for damages by pets from the rental bond. You may also have restrictions regarding things like painting the walls, using nails or screws in the walls, and more.

Pretend like you are moving in

One way to ensure that your apartment is in the condition it should be is to look at it as if you were a new tenant moving in. What would you write on a new property condition report? Does it require additional cleaning? How does it compare to the property condition report you filled out when you moved in? If you have photos from your move in date, compare the move out condition to the move in condition.

You may even request that your landlord walks through the house with you to go over its condition.

Hire professional cleaners

cleaning

If you are worried that your landlord could overcharge you, or if your house really does need a good, thorough cleaning, consider hiring professional cleaners (realestate.com.au have outlined the pros of having it done professionally here). Finding a cleaner on your own could save you in the long run, especially because you might take the time to look for a good deal while your landlord just wants to get the rental cleaned, and send the bill to you.

Sometimes cleaning companies offer deals for end of lease cleaning, and they will provide a guarantee that if you do not get your rental bond back, they will not charge you. Make sure that you hold on to all of your receipts so you have proof that you cleaned the apartment.

The woman behind beautiful cleaning brand Murchison-Hume

In the past few years, Murchison-Hume have gone from small (but stylish!) Sydney cleaning product brand to international success story. They’re currently taking the US by storm, being featured on Gwyneth Paltrow’s cult blog just last month, and it’s largely due to dynamo founder Max Kater.

Max and son Charlie
Max and son Charlie

Set
Having recently moved to Los Angeles to oversee the launch and growth of the brand in the US, Max’s mission has remained the same: for her products to be the trifecta of safe and green, looking and smelling great and performing well.

IMG_8618

At Interiors Addict, we can’t help but admit that it was the ‘looking and smelling great’ factor that got us the most interested. Something about not having to hide your cleaning products away, but instead being able to have them sit proudly on your counter, immediately caught our attention. It’s something Max puts down to her previous career: “In my former life as a fashion editor, I was used to working with beautiful things. I never understood why cleaning products had to scream at you from multi-coloured plastic bottles and choke you with a fake pine scent. House cleaning products needed a makeover.”

IMG_0298lowres
Max’s Beverly Hills home
IMG_0193lowres
Max’s Beverly Hills home

Yet while it was Max’s fashion background that made sure her products were noticed, it was actually her youngest son who inspired her to start Murchison-Hume. “Charlie inherited my allergies, eczema and asthma, which were exacerbated every time I cleaned. It took me a while to make the connection between his allergic sensitivities and the harsh chemicals I was using to keep the house clean. I was actually doing more harm than good! I started experimenting with every kind of eco-friendly cleaning product I could find. But I found them to be lacking. I was desperate and eventually resorted to making my own. I am happy to report that Charlie has been clear of all allergic symptoms for 10 years now, since we started using Murchison-Hume products exclusively in the house.”

Wanting to make cleaning more enjoyable, all products are 100% plant-based, simple and elegant solutions to everyday problems. “All that stuff that we all have to deal with, but don’t necessarily enjoy, we can help with that,” says Max. “The everyday problems like pizza sauce on the sofa, dirty dishes, quickly and easily polishing scuffed shoes and looking sharp without an expensive trip to the dry cleaner. Honestly, my own family life is a constant source of inspiration to me. If I need something clever to help me keep the house, kids or dogs clean and healthy, I think other people will need it too.”

Candles1

Despite expanding at a rapid rate, Max won’t launch a product just for the sake of it. For her, you won’t see it unless it’s perfect and better than anything else out there. “We’re always thinking about expanding into new areas but I won’t release a product just because our competition does. When I start to think about designing a product, it has come about because of a real world need that we can fill better than anyone else!”

The new soy candles will be available here later this month and recent additions for keeping your dogs, handbags, shoes and even clothes clean and fresh, have been popular.

Long time readers of this blog will know what a neat and clean freak I am and I have been a big fan of Murchison Hume products since before I even started Interiors Addict. The Sydney brand has come a long way, now branching out to the United States and collaborating with Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop! blog. We love a local success story.

Some of my personal Murchison Hume favourites are Superlative liquid handsoap and Decidedly Rich hand cream (this duo look great on your sink and I love that if they topple in, they won’t crack the ceramic like some heavier dispensers might, while still looking classy). This pair make a great new home gift for a friend. I go through serious amounts of Counter Intelligence (love the name!) surface spray in the kitchen and Boys’ Bathroom Cleaner well, you can guess where! And call me shallow but one of the best things about these products is they look so pretty you can leave them out. I know I’m not the only one who thinks like this!

Some of the newer products you might want to try are Garment Groom and Bag Butler, designed to keep your handbags and clothes looking and smelling clean and fresh. 10 ways to maximise space in the laundry

A well designed laundry should be easy to work in, have plenty of storage and enough room for you to get all your household jobs done. But designing the perfect laundry is tougher than you think, especially when size is an issue. The Good Guys’ appliance expert Denis Harvey, shares his 10 top tips on maximising space in the laundry.

GoodGuys_Oakville_011

  1. If a laundry is to be incorporated into the bathroom due to space constraints, a front loader washing machine is the best choice. This allows you to stack a dryer on top, which will also mean less stooping when it comes to using the appliances.
  2. Front loader washing machines also provide an extra bench space in a sense.
  3. For ultimate space saving, you can opt for a combination washer-dryer unit.
  4. Use utility baskets, small bins, or install shelving to separate and organise different products and utensils.
  5. Install hooks for coats, mops and backpacks, while a shoe rack should be used to keep muddy boots and other footwear from messing up your floor.
  6. Size is an important factor when buying a washing machine, so getting to grips with the different levels of capacity will help you make the right choice.
  7. If you want an ironing zone within the laundry itself, the best idea is to purchase an ironing board that can be fixed to the door so it can be flipped up when not in use (make sure you are within range of an electrical socket though).
  8. Make sure you consider the requirements of your laundry when planning the design. You may want to include a permanent ironing space, storage for cleaning products and a separate hanging area for clothes that can’t be put in the dryer.
  9. Plan storage carefully. Integrated cabinetry with pullout laundry bins, built-in ironing stations and hanging rails are ideal if space permits.
  10. A combination of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry will conceal mops, vacuum cleaners, clothes baskets and laundry chutes. Washing powder and laundry detergent along with all other cleaning supplies from around the house can be stored in the laundry if you have the space.

Review: Hoover Mode 5000PH

When signing the lease for our little abode, we were pretty over the moon as it had just been renovated and never lived in. However, after a week the new wool carpet was driving us mad, it was shedding like crazy! There was fluff everywhere, on everything, all the time!

hoover mode lifestyle

For what felt like forever, we thought our only hope was to save up for a Dyson. We decided to go ‘looking’ at what vacuums were out on there in our price range and no word of a lie, in the first shop within an hour of leaving the house, we came home with a new Hoover Mode 5000PH.

This Hoover is life-changing (well, for us clean freaks anyway). By all means it’s still not a cheap vacuum and we went in with every intention of spending half the money that we ended up shelling out. But after the demo, we were sold!

Make your own natural household cleaners

By Cybele Masterman

Nothing sweeps away the cobwebs quite like a good old spring clean. It marks the emergence out of hibernation and prepares for the frivolity of summer. I like to think of it as a deep cleanse that injects life back into the home by clearing away all the gunk that has accumulated while I’ve been tucked up next to the heater with the windows and doors closed.

Cleaning-Spray

The task is a lot more pleasant with nice smelling, non-toxic cleaning goodies. Fortunately, it’s really easy to make your own and they’re a lot cheaper too! The trick is to label all the containers with the contents and write the recipe on there too, so they’re easier to make next time.

The pet friendly vacuum cleaner from Electrolux that looks like a transformer!

Apparently 63% of Australian households own pets. That’s pretty believable – I actually thought it would be a bit more. For all those people who come home to abodes full of cat or dog hair dust bunnies, Electrolux has tried to make your life a little easier. If, on the other hand, you’re part of a household that owns a pet snail, hamster, beetle or anything else that could potentially get sucked up into a vacuum cleaner, the normal warnings would apply to using these products.
