Neale Whitaker’s new homewares inspired by country Australia

Popular media personality and interiors expert Neale Whitaker is bringing us a taste of his country home through his latest homewares collection.

Inspired by his country home and the nature that surrounds it, Neale’s spring/summer range features a range of versatile, earthy tones; the perfect collection of affordable, well-designed, contemporary basics.

“My new range continues to draw inspiration from the landscape and colours of my country home,” he said. “The collection is made from all-natural fabrics, including – for the first time – hemp.”

Sheet set – Clay

Neale has taken a considered approach to his new collection, designing pieces that will pair perfectly with his existing range. It features brand new bed linen, co-ordinating throws and cushions and towels in natural fabrics like linen, hemp and pure cottons. He has even added a new colour, Grey Gum, to the palette.

“Grey Gum is a beautiful, soft shade that shimmers somewhere between blue and silver grey. It reminds me of my favourite ghost gums, but also conjures the horizon of the ocean here on the NSW South Coast,” he said. “Mix Grey Gum with Granite or Oyster for a cool palette, or team it with Wattleseed for a palette that suggests the beauty of an Australian summer.”

Sun-drenched summer is here with Ecology’s new bedding range

Homewares brand Ecology have branched into bed linen for the first time as part of their Spring Summer 22/23 release. Superbloom celebrates bold designs, cheerful colours and abstract, desert-inspired florals, designed to remind us of holidays to sun-drenched destinations. Hopefully the Australian summer will follow suit!

Dream Stone & White Collection

Superbloom

Encapsulating the theme of the season, the superbloom bedding collection captures the essence and vibrancy of vast fields of wildflowers radiating in the sun. Designed by Sarah Strickland, who was inspired by images of superbloom events in Western Australia, the palette projects the warmth and brilliance of summer. The beaming wildflowers are arranged in a dynamic fusion of overlapping petals and stems, creating both an energetic and harmonious burst of colour. Available in queen, king and super king.

Wanderlust

The feeling of wanderlust is stronger than ever now that travel is finally possible again. However comfort, security and warm feel from being cocooned in our own space is still important. Wanderlust blends these two ideas to create a range that gives the sense of adventure and discovery and brings it into the sanctuary of our bedrooms. The colours have a really calming feel, with designer Heather Piez using a palette of earthen hues to highlight the warmth in her rising sun motifs. Available in queen, king and super king.

She-Oak

Sarah was musing over the delicate, needle-like fronds on the native she-oaks when designing this collection. Her interpretation of the elongated leaves was achieved by painting in loose watercolour, allowing her to create a fluid pattern where the soft colours flow into one another. From afar, the horizontal stripes present as a full cover of peachy goodness while up close the intricate detail of the stippled watercolour technique can be seen.

Dream

Dream provides the solid foundation to create a minimalist aesthetic or use it as your anchor pieces to accentuate high pattern quilts and pillows. This bedding collection offers a blend of European Linen and BCI Cotton in four solid colours for a classic, effortless finish. The dream range comes in dream white, dream stone, dream dandelion or dream peach.

Spring interior trends that will stand the test of time

Spring has officially arrived, and with the promise of warmer weather and the hope of new beginnings, it often feels intuitive to refresh our home-style to reflect the change in seasons. While interior design trends are everchanging, we, unfortunately, see many of these “trends” tend to have a short lifecycle – particularly those that are purely seasonal.

Pictured: The Korora by GO Homes.

Lucky for us we have the expertise of Tayla Hampson and Courtney Pellegrino from Studio Cult Interior Design Architects, who share their top five trends that are not only perfect for the new season but will also stand the test of time.

1. Sage painted walls

Although sage is a neutral colour it is also extremely versatile and can be used to create vibrancy within a room. There are many variations of sage, and the undertones you select will determine whether it is cool or warm and whether it is a subtle or bold shade. While tones and shades vary based on personal preference, a common theme with sage is the calming, serene feeling that it creates within a space – making it an enduring wall colour choice.

2. Natural tones and textures

We’ve seen a shift towards more natural home décor in recent years, with rattan, wood and earthy tones becoming more popular. Natural tones and textures bring a relaxed, warm and soothing atmosphere to your home. The earthy look is timeless, translating well across all seasons and blending seamlessly with a variety of home styles. We have seen people spending more time at home in the past two years, and incorporating elements of nature within your interior décor can help to form a ‘sanctuary’ – providing a calming, harmonious space that balances indoor and outdoor living

Pictured: The Westbay by Commodore Homes.

3. Curved furniture and decorative pieces

Soft, curved furniture pieces are a great home staple and a worthwhile investment. Curves help to soften the sharpness of room corners, tables and benches, creating a sense of comfort and cosiness. Boucle sofas had a comeback this year, and we fully expect this style to remain popular for years to come. There are also a number of simple ways to incorporate curves through your interior décor, such as round ottomans, pillows or rugs.

Pictured: The Belharra by Commodore Homes.

4. Grandmillennial décor is here to stay

Grandmillennial style, also dubbed ‘granny chic’ by interior designers, is a trend that continues to grow in popularity and we envision will remain a tasteful choice that stands the test of time. Grandmillenial styled homes combined modern elements with vintage decor to create a harmonious juxtaposition. This fun, contrasting style is unique to each home, based on personal taste and décor choices

Pictured: The Helena by Commodore Homes.

5. Textured tiling

Texture is a key element of interior design, as it helps to create depth, vibrancy and warmth within your home. Tiles are a great way to add a stylish layer to your home and we are seeing textured tiles become more in demand. Textured tiles can be incorporated anywhere in your home and in a variety of unique ways – such as on furniture, on the kitchen island bench, or in your bathrooms. Some particularly popular timeless styles include terracotta, mosaics and glazed porcelain.

Foodie Friday: Smoked & spiced chicken & chickpea salad

We love the look of this new Smoked & Spiced Vitality Salad from Chargrill Charlie’s, one of three new anti-ageing salads developed with nutritionist, Liv Kaplan. They’re designed to leave your body full of energy and skin glowing heading in to Spring. Sounds good to us! In all 10 Chargrill Charlie’s stores for this month only.

Enjoy chicken and chickpeas cooked in a smokey paprika and lime marinade, on top of a tahini kale salad.

Serves 4 | Gluten and diary free.

Ingredients

Paprika chicken and chickpeas
500g chicken thigh
1 tbsp smoked paprika
2 garlic cloves, crushed
Juice of 1 lime
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp sea salt
1 cup chickpeas, rinsed and drained

Salad
1 bunch kale, roughly torn
1 cucumber, chopped
Fresh chilli, chopped

Tahini dressing
2 tbsp tahini
Juice of 1 medium lemon
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tsp sea salt
1-2 tbsp warm water
2 tbsp olive oil

Method

(Paprika chicken and chickpeas)

Preheat the oven to 180C.

In a bowl, combine the chicken with the paprika, garlic, lime juice, olive oil and salt.

Heat a medium pan to a high heat and sear the chicken thighs on each side, pouring the leftover marinade into the pan. Transfer to an oven safe dish and continue cooking in the oven for 20 minutes or until cooked.

Remove from the oven and shred roughly. Pour the chickpeas into the dish and toss chicken and chickpeas together to coat in the juices.

(Tahini dressing)

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk together until smooth.

(Kale salad)

Place the roughly torn kale in a large bowl and pour over dressing. Using hands or tongs, massage the dressing into the kale until it breaks down and is coated in dressing. Toss in cucumber.

To serve, use kale salad as a base, top with chicken and chickpea mixture, drizzle over extra tahini dressing and top with fresh chilli.

Important points: The chicken must be roughly shredded using forks as opposed to sliced. It must also be done while still warm so it soaks up the juices.

Kale is best massaged to break down the fibres and let it absorb the flavour of the dressing.

Foodie Friday: Minted hibiscus and raspberry iced tea

foodie friday logo

Spring is in full bloom! It’s the perfect season for light, fresh flavours, leisurely lunches and the first al fresco dinner parties. Williams-Sonoma has your signature spring drink covered; a generous splash of tequila is mixed with raspberries, chopped mint and Grand Marnier for a refreshing iced-tea cocktail with attitude. It’s really easy to make and sure to impress your guests. It can also be made in advance if you’re serving a larger group, just chill then add ice to serve. Why not play mixologist for a day?

minted-hibiscus-raspberry-iced-tea

Ingredients

  • 8 cups water
  • 3 cups raspberries
  • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh mint, plus leaves for garnish
  • 6 hibiscus tea bags or 6 tbsp hibiscus flowers
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups tequila
  • 1/2 cup Grand Marnier
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • Ice as needed

Method

In a large saucepan over high heat, bring the water to a boil. Add 2 cups of the raspberries, the chopped mint and the tea bags. Remove from the heat and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour.

Remove and discard the tea bags and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large jug. Discard the solids. Add the sugar, tequila, Grand Marnier and lime juice and stir to combine. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Pour into ice-filled glasses (the Edward Double Old-Fashioned Glasses from Williams-Sonoma are the perfect shape for this cocktail). Garnish with the remaining 1 cup raspberries and mint leaves and serve immediately. Serves 6 to 8.

Selling in spring: Property makeovers for a competitive season

As soon as the calendar hits September you can feel the property market wake up from its winter hibernation. Welcome to spring, one of the most competitive times of year to list your property. Here are some tips on how to prepare your place at this hectic time and make your property stand out from the crowd.

mark-foy-landscape-reno-addict1
Mark Foy

Advice for selling in spring

For the past few years I’ve been cautious about encouraging people to sell their property in spring. Why? Lots of people think this is the best time of year to sell, but actually a healthy buying market has less to do with the season and more to do with stock levels.

It may surprise you to learn that the number of buyers in the property market is fairly steady throughout the year. When there are fewer properties on the market, demand and prices go up, but if everyone thinks they should sell their property in spring, there’s a glut and results may not reflect the quality of the stock.

This spring is a little different to the past few. Interest rates are low and people aren’t selling at the rate they have in recent years, so the lack of stock means it’s a better spring than most to list your property. That being said, it’s still a competitive time to sell, so you’ll need to make sure your property is at its best.

Preparation and presentation

You only get one chance to impress a buyer, so make it count. Milder weather means people are happy to spend a little more time outside looking at the exterior of the property, so pay attention to the condition of your home. The facade should be neat, well maintained and inviting.

If you have a garden, make sure it is tidy and well kept. If it’s too early in the season for flowers or lush greenery, consider hiring a landscape gardener to plant something that blossoms early.

I strongly encourage homeowners to engage a property stylist to neutralise the space and enhance its positive features. The more you can remove your personality from the place, the easier it is for buyers to overlay their vision for the property, which encourages better sales. If you have psychedelic walls, for example, paint them white. A good stylist will give your place the edge over comparable properties for sale, so it is well worth the money to hire one.

Timing is everything

Every property has an optimum time for inspection, dependent on ambience. As the days become longer during springtime, the best time/s in terms of favourable natural light and comfortable temperature will change compared to winter. Identify the best time to show your property and schedule an inspection as soon as possible to ensure you secure that timeslot.

Because more sellers tend to list their properties at this time of year, it’s also a good idea to line up all the professionals you need to help you sell yours—your choice of real estate agent, property stylist and/or auctioneer—as early as possible. Keep an eye on demand for other services you may need, for example someone to make minor repairs, paint your property or landscape your garden, so you can engage the people you need when you need them.

Spring may be a traditionally competitive time of year to sell your property but with a bit of planning and knowledge about what’s going on in the market you can certainly edge out similar listings and use the season to your advantage. As I mentioned, this year stocks are lower than usual so it’s a good time to put your place on the market because the weather and the competition are less fierce.

Foodie Friday: Spring Lamb Chops with Pea, Feta & Mint Salad

foodie friday logo

Here’s a delicious way to ring in spring with the season’s signature lamb and peas from Williams-Sonoma. As the weather begins to warm up, it’s the perfect time to head outside and fire up the barbie for an easy mid-week dinner or long weekend lunch. Look for grass-fed, pasture-raised lamb at the supermarket or butcher and, if you’d like to simplify prep, use thawed frozen peas in place of fresh.

Foodie Friday Lamb Chops

Ingredients

  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 lamb chops, each 125-155 g and 2.5-3 cm thick
  • 3 cups freshly shelled peas (or thawed frozen peas)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 2 tbsp minced fresh mint
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 90 g feta cheese, crumbled

Method

In a shallow dish large enough to hold the chops in one layer, whisk together the lemon zest and juice, garlic and 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add the lamb chops, turn to coat, and let stand for 30 minutes, turning once halfway through.

Prepare a bowl of iced water. Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a rapid boil. Add the peas and cook for about 1-2 minutes until not quite tender. Immediately drain and transfer to the iced water to stop the cooking. Drain well and pat dry.

In a bowl, combine the peas, the remaining 2 tablespoons oil, and the mint. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt and season with pepper. Toss gently.

Preheat barbecue grill on high. Pat the lamb chops dry with paper towels and season both sides generously with salt. Place on the grill rack and cook for about 3-5 minutes until dark brown and sizzling. Turn over the chops and continue to cook for 3-5 more minutes for medium-rare, or to your desired doneness. Transfer to a platter, season with pepper, and let rest for 5-10 minutes.

Stir the vinegar and cheese into the pea salad. Serve alongside the chops. Serves 4.

6 spring storage tips from Temple & Webster

Spring is finally here and, while we’re more than ready to ditch our heavy winter coats for a far lighter (and funner) sense of style, the issue of where to store our woolly warmers for the next six months can pose an issue – especially for those tight on space.

Temple & Webster - Coffee TableLuckily, Temple & Webster’s styling guru Jess Bellef has some hot tips to revitalise your hibernating winter home and maximise spring storage.

“Clever storage ideas are a quick and easy way to give your home a seasonal refresh without having to spend a fortune,” she said. “Start thinking about what you can minimise in your living area, bathroom or even office to increase space and give that fresh, makeover feeling.”

Temple & Webster - Floating Shelves1. Minimise the clutter in your home office by choosing storage boxes in the same colour throughout the space. This can create a sense of harmony in a space that is often cluttered with paperwork and technology.

2. Choose furniture options that have storage incorporated into the design. For example, an ottoman that can store your woolly jumpers, or a bed with drawers underneath that can hold your coats and scarves. Perfect for hibernating those winter clothes!

3. Keep large straw baskets handy in the lounge room. In one quick sweep you can gather up all the toys off the floor. They’re also a neat way to store extra blankets and cushions.

Temple _ Webster - Baskets

4. Floating shelves are an easy way to create more storage surface area without taking up valuable floor space.  They are great for a home office or bedroom and they are available in a wide range of finishes and sizes.

5. Be disciplined and ruthless when it comes to getting rid of items you no longer need. Retire items you haven’t touched all winter – this cleanout is good for the soul and will inspire you to stay more organised. Drop items off at your local Vinnies or sell them on Gumtree.

6. Organise your kitchen according to usage. Minimise the clutter on your benchtop by storing away appliances that you rarely use. If you find after time you haven’t pulled out the ice cream/popcorn/hotdog maker, that’s a cue to get rid of it.

6 cleaning tips to help you spring back to life this season

With the doom and gloom of winter finally drawing to a close, it’s time to spring back in to action in both your mind and home. During the colder months we have a tendency to turn a blind eye to the accumulating dust and rug up with a good book rather than a vacuum cleaner.

Spring Clean 2 copyJordana Thirlwall, co-founder of Supercheap Storage, has come up with some handy tips on bringing order back to your house and mind this spring.

Spring Clean 11. De-clutter and store Miscellaneous items here, there and everywhere? Take some time to de-clutter the house and dispose of those winter knick-knacks. But, as the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, so if you don’t need it, donate or recycle. It’s good for the soul.

2. What’s in the wardrobe? Keeping warm often leads to multiplying your wardrobe and, come spring, it can appear rather overwhelming. So, why not sort your clothes by the seasons and store away those woolly pieces. Some say it’s a form of therapy.

3. Pick up a paintbrush A fresh coat of paint can not only help clear your mind, leaving you feeling rejuvenated, but also freshen up the darkest of rooms with the simple stroke of a brush.

4. Clean out the pantry In the colder months we tend to eat more “comfort” foods: chips over fish, pasta over salad, ice cream over fruit. Going on a spring detox and flushing out those winter toxins hidden in the kitchen can leave both your body and mind feeling rejuvenated, as well as your pantry.

5. Detox the mind, body and mould Too many nights curled up with a bottle of wine in the winter months? Time to give the body a break and use that leftover liquor for cleaning purposes. The toxins in vodka will eliminate mould and have your bathroom looking brand new again.

6. Call in reinforcements There are many companies who will store belongings for as little or as long as need be. Do some research and shop around for the best quote. It is important to go with companies who focus on security and reliability so belongings are looked after and are easily accessible.

See how Jen styled her home with Freedom’s spring/summer range

Sponsored by Freedom

Is anyone else getting excited about spring being around the corner? After months stuck inside with the heating on, keeping a newborn (and his parents!) warm, I can’t wait to be able to throw open the doors and windows and smell the fresh air! Like many Australians, I love switching up my decor for the warmer months to make everything a bit brighter and more relaxed. This winter, we’ve been rocking a grey and gold colour scheme but I’m ready for something a little more colourful and fun for the next few months so I was excited to have a play with some of Freedom’s latest homewares at my place (I think this might just be the first time I’ve given readers a look inside this home too!).

freedom shoot 3

There is no shortage of sunshine yellows in the latest range which instantly say summer! Such a happy hue! And even though it’s getting warmer, I still like to keep texture in my interiors. The absolute easiest and most cost-effective way to do this is through a mix ‘n match collection of cushions. You can see from my picks (all of those pictured are from Freedom, from $34.95 to $49.95) that there’s plenty of different materials and the knitted and quilted looks are my favourites.

freedom shoot 1

The simple decorative turquoise and yellow metal ornaments on the table (just $9.95 and $4.95, BARGAIN!) are a great way to tie in the colours from the cushions and throw and very on trend. Likewise, this fab rug introduces little pops of colour without being over the top. There are a lot of same-same rugs on the market and this one’s a real standout and a generous size (160x230cm).

Your home shouldn’t be a show home, but it should rather make you smile and feel comfortable and relaxed. When my home’s feeling just right, I love opening the door at the end of a busy day!

I found it really liberating to introduce so much colour into my home. Maybe being a new mum has got me more used to brights and made me a little more fun?! What do you think of this look? Sebastian loves it 😉

A first look at Freedom’s latest collection, styled by Jason Grant

Nothing beats switching things up at home to herald the warmer days and the abundance of sunshine. The new Freedom Spring/Summer 2014 Collection is a culmination of colour, print and pattern. A true celebration of Australian interiors.

“Freedom has embraced everything there is to love about colour for the new summer collection,” says senior homewares buyer Korryn Bentley. “Remember those pastels we all grew up with — reminiscent of 20c worth of mixed lollies? We’ve grown up and so has the palette, but it’s just as sweet. We know colour makes an interior a happier place to be, this season we have plenty of options.”

Stylist Mr Jason Grant, whose second book is released later this month, styled these gorgeous images. He said: ““I’m loving the latest collection from Freedom, a welcome burst of colour and pattern for the warmer months. Mixing geometric patterns, bright pops of colour and gelato shades with classic shapes and timber pieces, the collection is fun and fresh.

Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 8.44.16 PM

“Of course I love anything nautical or tropical and there are anchors, stripes, oars and palm leaves everywhere! The collection is perfect for adding some summer vibes and relaxed, laid back style to your home.”

Four new decorating stories embody the spirit of an Australian summer. You can choose how you play with colour, but Freedom have helpfully done the groundwork for you to get you there:

Sorbet Dream

A soothing palette of pastel tones and grey makes for a home that is beautifully serene. When designing with simplicity in mind, every detail has been introduced with precision and beauty. Whether it’s the artisanal feel of contrast glazing on the Talleo vessel or the graphic statement of the Boyd rugs neon on neutral stripes, it’s the little things that count.

Sunseeker

Balancing classic and contemporary elements, Sunseeker delivers a fresh energy to interiors. Whether it’s the Saltram adjustable stool that combines the honest of timber with industrial form or our solid elm Constable dining table with mixed bench and chair seating, Sunseeker makes home life less ordinary. Earthy terracotta also features heavily, especially across the Terra vessel collection that has been handmade in Portugal.

Colour Fiesta

Making a strong statement with ease, Colour Fiesta gives a bold new direction to the warmer months. Start with the classic understatement of a hero neutral piece like the Benson Modular Sofa and build your look from there. Dip into new shades with everyday pieces, like the Pompidou table or the Epping nest of three tables, each given a playful splash of colour.

Island Life

Relaxed yet eye-catching, the living is easy with Island Life. From rope and natural weaves to bottle green glass; shipshape, nautical touches also steal the scene. Look no further than the Demijohn table lamp for proof that a little high sea inspiration can still be contemporary and urban. Rounding out Island Life is a range of new season cushions that have been rendered in vintage inspired prints. Case in point? The Hula cushion, it’s fun and unique and will get noticed for all the right reasons.

New collection pieces are arriving weekly from today. Shop online.

Celebrate Spring with 20% off Robert Plumb

You can feel it in the air, can’t you? I’ve been out sweeping my balcony and dreaming about eating dinner outside of evening! Come on Spring, stop teasing us!

Inadesignerhome (Idh) is offering 20% off all Robert Plumb furniture for the month of September, starting this Saturday, to celebrate the warmer months ahead.

I love their outdoor chairs, which you can get in so many colours. Bright, modern and great quality. When I grow up and have a big garden, I will have them! The mail boxes are very cool too. Check out the entire collection at Idh.
