Flintstones chic: New furniture range embraces the latest trend

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there’s a certain aesthetic sweeping the interiors scene of late. An extension of the curved and organic trends, the current Flintstones vibe features fossil-inspired shapes that play cheekily with proportions. It’s a quirky reference point and not one you’d typically associate with high style, but it’s one that I’m totally here for.

It’s also an aesthetic explored by Aussie interior stylist Tim Neve through his debut furniture collection. Featuring organic-shaped statement pieces, executed in warm and tactile materials such as rattan, teak and travertine, Tim’s range is hand-crafted by artisans, produced in limited quantities and features everything from tables to chairs, sofas and sculptures.

Tim Neve

“Each piece is designed to work as a statement piece, and they’re even stronger when placed together. I can’t wait to see how people style the furniture in their homes,” says Tim, who is known for his bespoke range of textile prints and busy career styling and educating.

Tim Neve
The Arch armchair

A standout from the range, the Wave Coffee Table pairs a kidney shaped travertine tabletop with a trio of on-trend ball feet – the design’s fossil vibe is accentuated by the table’s chiselled stone edges.

Tim Neve coffee table
The range’s Linen armchair, Wave coffee table and Sculptural side table make quite the statement

The range’s carved timber side tables are super fun too, acting as both practical tabletops and sculptural pieces. The Linen armchair features a warm woodgrain combined with textural oatmeal upholstery – the nude leather straps add a stylish accent, and the design is grounded with four oversized ball feet. In contrast, the Sling Lounger features nude leather paired with sculptural, club inspired teak legs that would make Barney Rubble proud.

And for those wanting in on the aesthetic without diving head first, the range also includes a series of organic shaped sculptures and bowls, perfect for styling your next shelfie.

How to avoid waiting for furniture amid pandemic delays

When Bianca and Marcus Jowett established Perth-based online furniture and styling hub Granite Lane, they not only wanted to develop and curate their own furniture and homewares collection but to source locally while doing it. Seven years on – and as the pandemic has fundamentally changed the way people live, buy, and think, Aussie consumers are increasingly looking local.

Granite Lane
Pieces from the Granite Lane collection

“Customers don’t want to be waiting nearly a year to receive their products and we don’t want them too either. We want to deliver their products and bring their design vision to life as quickly as possible,” says Bianca Jowett who found that being able to manufacture locally has meant her business hasn’t been affected by COVID-led supply chain issues.

Granite Lane custom designs (or source within Australia) their collection of sofas, armchairs, ottomans, and bed frames which is great news for consumers who are frustrated with ongoing furniture delays. “We’ve never really seen anything like what’s happening now. Consumers are buying furniture in record numbers, but the average delivery delays from a lot of retailers are staggering,” says Marcus Jowett, who manages Granite Lane’s supply chain.

The Granite Lane team
The Granite Lane team

Marcus also explains the latest twist for furniture suppliers has seen factory closures in Vietnam due to COVID-19, meaning that furniture stores have seen lead times of up to 10-12 months when ordering products from overseas. By comparison, Granite Lane can offer a lead time of 8-10 weeks as well as full customisation.

“Also, we love that we can collaborate with our customers on the design of their sofa to match their space perfectly. Because we source locally, we can customise the sofa, ottoman, armchair and even bed instead of being stuck with a design that is pumped out of a factory,” says Bianca.

Granite Lane

And while sourcing locally has had an expensive reputation in the past, when you add in pandemic-led delays and the rising cost of shipping containers, the cost difference is diminishing. “To source internationally you need to ship goods overseas and everybody’s fighting for space on the containers, so they’re bidding them up,” says Marcus who has always struggled with the comparison between a better-quality product made locally to that of something mass-produced.

“It’s evident that once you weigh up the cost of the sofa, the cost to the environment, the cost of the client’s time, and the cost of quality all outweigh the monetary value,” says Marcus.

Koala: From ‘mattress in a box’ to bonafide furniture brand

When Koala hit the Australian furniture scene in 2015, it made waves due to its unique ‘mattress in a box’ offering. Coupled with the brand’s fabulous 120-night trial policy, commitment to solid eco-friendly practices and reasonable prices, Koala has gone on to become one of our most successful furniture start-ups. Today we catch up with the brand’s Vice President of product and design, James Whitta, to hear all about the brand’s ethos and expansion.

Koala mattress
The mattress that put the brand on the map

“Koala’s philosophy is all about creating products that suit the laidback Aussie lifestyle while also doing wonders for the planet. Sustainability is at the core of Koala’s identity; we always ensure we are taking care of the planet and its people every step of the way. We also want our customers to find buying furniture from us a breeze, by ensuring all our products are easy to buy, try and return,” says James.

Koala Highback armchair

After launching with one mattress style in 2015, and experiencing great success, Koala added a variety of others to the mix, designed to service every type of sleeper. The line-up soon became Australia’s most awarded mattress range and it encouraged Koala to look at other ways to permeate our homes. Consequently, in 2018, Koala launched the Lounging Sofa and continued to add furniture lines.

The Koala Lounging Sofa

“While sleep will always be a core part of Koala, it was a natural progression for us to explore how we could continue to develop products that Aussies will become die-hard fans of,” says James in explaining the current Koala range which includes beds, bed linen, pillows, desks, chairs, tables, storage options and sofas. Continuing the award-winning success of the brand’s mattresses, the Koala Cushy sofa bed was voted Product of the Year in 2022 (in the sofa bed category), and the WFH Desk won a Good Design Award in 2021.

Simple, stylish designs aside, the brand’s risk-free 120-night trial period is surely a solid consumer drawcard. “If customers aren’t in love with their new purchase, you can simply let us know, ship it back and receive a full refund. This applies across our entire range, not just our famous mattresses,” says James who explains that returned goods are given a second life through one of 68 charity partners.

Koala’s commitment to sustainability is no doubt another enticement for consumers with the brand committed to designing furniture that is well-loved and kept for years. “It’s part of our bid to take a stance against the fast furniture industry. All of Koala’s products are designed with their life cycles in mind, to ensure they are as recyclable as possible and that they don’t end up in landfill at the end of their days,” says James.

In addition, Koala sources timber from environmentally and socially managed forests through its work with the Forest Stewardship Council. “Our customers can feel great knowing they’ve chosen a product that takes care of forests, and the people and animals who call them home.”

Koala coffee table

And while the brand currently boasts 230 employees and has expanded into Japan and South Korea, there’s plenty of exciting news to come yet. In response to consumer demand, Koala is about to enter another sphere of the furniture market. “We had overwhelming demand from our customers to launch these new products, so we can’t wait to share the good news. All will be revealed in June but for now, it’s a secret!”

Sydney Harbour apartment reno takes in the glistening view

Purchased by Sydney interior designer Alex Morrison and her partner in 2019, this Darling Point apartment was ripe for renovation despite its show-stopping harbour views. “I first saw the apartment in 2019 and was completely captivated with the location and the potential the space offered. We felt like we’d found a space that we could transform and add our own personality too,” says Alex who did just that with a series of deft structural and elegant cosmetic changes.

Dining room
The dining room has spectacular views of Sydney Harbour

Originally, the home’s layout was very disjointed, and there was a disconnect between the key living spaces and harbour views. Bizarrely, the kitchen was located at the back of the apartment meaning that all the entertaining was done at the back of the home away from the fabulous views.

“I ended up flipping the floorplan so that the kitchen and living areas would enjoy the views and allow natural light to reflect off the bay and into the living area,” says Alex who collaborated with an engineer and builder from Think Built on the project.

Lounge room
The lounge room features a gorgeous Calacatta Viola marble fire place

After the structural and layout issues had been resolved, Alex set about making cosmetic changes to the abode. “As this was our home, it was a different experience than working with clients in terms of a design brief. My personal brief was to make the interiors more functional with classic and timeless finishes that any new homeowner could see and make the space their own,” says Alex who has since sold the property.

Bedroom

The tranquil spaces feature a neutral, luxurious palette of finishes including herringbone floors from Havwoods, hand painted joinery, Arabescato Corchia marble in the kitchen and Calacatta Vagli marble in the bathrooms. A standout feature, and Alex’s favourite part of the renovation, is the Calacatta Viola marble fireplace in the living room that is finished with a pair of Vintage Murano wall sconces. “I absolutely love them and think they finish the fireplace beautifully,” says Alex.

A close-up of that gorgeous fireplace

The home’s eclectic mix of furniture and art certainly adds interesting layers to the home – there’s classic designer pieces such as a Le Corbusier chair mixed with vintage and second-hand finds including a pair of unique kitchen bar stools. “I bought the vintage wavy barstools online for $220. They arrived with the seat cushion all damaged and I had them reupholstered and they look wonderful!” says Alex.

Kitchen
Kitchen
A ‘Floating Back’ chair from Pierre Jeanneret with Le Corbusier is paired with vintage finds from Conley & Co in this study nook

“Overall, I’m most proud of way it now feels when you’re standing in the living space. Previously all the natural light was closed off and every room felt dark and cold. Now it feels as if we’ve invited the outside elements inside and you can happily move around with natural light entering from every angle.”

Aussie family turns Bali holidays into interiors business

“As a family of five, we have been travelling to Indonesia for the past 16 years. We fell in love with the people and culture, as well as the beautifully crafted furniture and homewares,” says Sydneysider Louise Maloney who, after years of filling containers with Bali wares for personal use, set up online furniture and homewares business ELSIAN Home last year.

The range of affordable, and unique furniture and accessories is curated by Louise alongside her interior designer daughter Eliza. The Northern Beaches based family recently built a new home and furnished the entire abode with custom pieces sourced in Bali, which is when the idea for the business really took flight. “The positive feedback from family and friends encouraged me to create ELSIAN Home,” says Louise.

Louise has established many relationships with Bali locals over her years travelling there – the contacts are reliable, trusted and have enabled her to access quality pieces from premium suppliers. “My main contact, who sources things for us, is very particular. He has taken me to visit artisans that create things exclusively for American designers. There’s some amazing stuff up there,” says Louise who explains that she travels off the tourist beat to find the more unusual wares.

Product sourcing
Sourcing for product in Bali

The impact of COVID on Bali, is another reason that Louise decided to start the business in the middle of a pandemic. “We have made a lot of Balinese friends over our years travelling there too and I really wanted to support them during COVID,” says Louise who explains that Balinese furniture manufacturers have been hit hard during the pandemic. Freight costs have gone up exponentially too which is having an impact on prices. “It’s unfortunate all round,” says Louise.

An extension of the homewares and furniture offering, ELSIAN Home also offer a full interior design consulting service that is managed by Eliza. “She’s very talented and is currently contracting to AZB Creative while running her own business Eliza Madison Designs,” says Louise. The revitalisation features a scenic waterfront promenade with views, a shaded BBQ area with seating and well as a playground. The base is accessible by bus and ferry and makes for the perfect day out in Sydney.

“Looking for a new space, we focussed on finding somewhere that captured the essence of Sydney and naturally the harbour was always front and centre. We are thrilled to have found a new home in this remarkable location – steeped in history and boasting beautiful waterside views. Even the motto for HMAS Platypus ‘Nothing too Difficult’ seems apt for our new home.”

Where to buy French homewares online in Australia: our picks

From the chic, Parisian aesthetic to the ever-popular French Country look, there’s no denying the enduring appeal of French style. Whether your home is in the inner-city or by the seaside, the French aesthetic is a versatile and popular one going by the number of French inspired Australian stores. Here are our top six.

Bastille and Sons: The creation of Toulouse born Valerie Moreno, Bastille and Sons is a purveyor of unique French artisan homewares. It was after fifteen years in Paris and a move to Sydney that Valerie sought to bring a dose of Parisian cool to our shores. The chic range includes a host of French brands and covers furniture, lighting and textiles. The brand’s gorgeous Croisette chair (pictured below) really put the brand on the map.

Little French: If you’re in the market for a gorgeous, vintage child’s bed then this is the place to go. Located in Sydney’s Marrickville, Little French stocks a gorgeous collection of unique, beautifully handcrafted children’s beds as well as beautiful vintage French posters to complement. All the beds have been refurbished by hand (if needed) and no two beds are the same which is what makes them so desirable. The brand describes the beds as ‘perfectly imperfectly’ which we absolutely love.

French Consul: A one-stop shop for French linen textiles, French Consul sells cushion covers, tote bags and table runners all made from 100 per cent certified French flax (and Irish woven) linen. The brand’s original line-up of wares was inspired by the classic French farmer’s ‘grain sack’ stripe, and the small production runs are sewn by Irish and Australian artisans.

Recently, the collection has expanded to include a range of textured, soft-washed linen that is grown and spun in France and woven and sewn in Ireland where linen has been made on the loom since the 17th Century. The collection’s insignia 17ème siècle “17th Century” is sewn on every product like a mending patch, representing the official date and formal start of the Irish linen trade led by French linen master, Louis Crommelin, in the late 1600’s.

New Australian online homewares store Oski + Lottie celebrates slow living

Oski + Lottie is a new Australian homewares and furniture store created by Caroline Rose after she struggled to find classic, beautiful, and locally made soft furnishings for her family home. Seeking an alternative to trend-focussed, mass-produced wares, the Oski + Lottle range is timeless (without being boring!) but also attainable too. A ‘slow living’ philosophy underpins the stylish brand that takes inspiration from contemporary Scandinavian design and iconic mid-century modern forms.

Oski + Lottie

The collection is organised into four categories – Home, Furniture, Rituals and Textiles and there is literally something for every room of the home. There’s kitchen items as well as lighting, mirrors, indoor and outdoor furniture, shelving, candles, scents, incense, and oils as well as textiles including blankets, throws, cushions, pillows, table and kitchen linen. The site stocks iconic Scandinavian brands such as Menu and Frama making it a one-stop stylish shop for the home.

Oski + Lottie

And the range isn’t just beautiful to look at – it’s a thoughtful, considered collection too. The Oski + Lottie textile collection is designed and made in Melbourne with fabrics that have a sustainable focus. The brand uses ethically, and sustainably sourced Belgian and French linen printed using non-toxic, solvent-free, water-based pigment inks that have less of an environmental impact than traditional alternatives. The brand is also committed to minimising fabric wastage where possible (ensuring it is repurposed or recycled) and uses sustainable packaging.
