This may surprise you, but BIG W is our pick of new homewares and here’s why

Sponsored by BIG W

While you may not immediately think of BIG W as the place to find our pick of this season’s top homewares, the retailer has proven that style doesn’t need to mean expensive.  Seriously, the latest Spring homewares at BIG W look way more expensive than they are! I’ve already shared a lot of them with you on Instagram but today I’m making sure what I tell you about is available to buy online right now (as I write this!) so don’t delay!

I also had a chat with BIG W’s senior design manager for Kids & Home, Gupreet Panesar, to get an idea about how a new collection comes together. “As a team, we don’t believe that creating something that can be family-friendly and affordable means we need to sacrifice on style or variety,” she told me. “As such, we look to capture the trends we are seeing globally, and bring them to life with designs across textiles and furniture that can stand the family test, and make quality pieces at a more affordable price.”

I found out it’s not a case of starting from scratch each season, but more of a rolling evolution. “We are continually thinking about the customer mission and living our purpose: we make a real difference for families. When we break that down it provides us with direction. Mums and dads are looking for a product that is on trend but is easy to care for and can be tossed into the family wash time and time again. Value is so much more than price.”

With everyone having spent so much time within their homes this year, nesting, finessing and resetting, softened colours, playing with textures and trends from nature, are all highlights. “This is coupled with our renewed sense of outdoor living,” Gupreet says. “I really love our coordinated outdoor ranges that enable picnics, casual backyard BBQs and a little panache to your life outside.

“Our customers want to create a space where they feel like they are on vacation and our range does just that. The “staycation” trend is what we used to develop key pieces in the range.”

There’s a whole range of matching items in the outdoor range such as beanbag covers, beach towels and outdoor cushions from $19.

When it comes to refreshing your home for Spring, Gupreet says the simple swaps are often best. “New bedding, towels and rugs all provide a new look and feel in the home if you want to switch it up a bit. Adding a pop of colour, texture or prints are the best ways to spruce up your space and create that feel of change for the new season.

These bargain muslin throws are perfect for spring on the bed or sofa and come in heaps of colours

“If patterns and pops of colour aren’t in your design palette then we have dry florals, natural materials, indigo blues and more classic fabrics to uplift your space.”

Also worth a mention is all the stylish storage. I believe you can never have too many baskets for chucking things in (especially toys at our house!) and these, starting at $16, are both great.

Another favourite pick of mine are these zipped linen cushions covers in 55cm and 65cm sizes, which are a steal at $15 and $19.

BIG W’s retro glam winter range starts from $9!

It’s pretty safe to say that BIG W isn’t exactly synonymous with glamour but that looks set to change with the arrival of the store’s latest home release ‘Dark Wonder.’

BIG W landscape

With a dash of mid-century, more than a splash of Art Deco, industrial influences and plenty of on-trend 1970’s inspired colours, the range is as fabulous as it is eclectic and we’re predicting a stampede – particularly given that prices start from just $9!

Storage ottoman
I suspect the ‘Kodu’ velvet storage ottoman, $49, will be in hot demand!

Art Deco
Of all of the collection’s reference points, the Art Deco one seems the strongest. From super affordable prints featuring 1930’s inspired fonts to the abundance of velvet and the brass touches, the collection has more than a whiff of the jazz age.

BIG W deco art
Felt print with gold foil framed canvas, $39 and ‘New York’ framed print, $19

The hottest item in this category will no doubt be the classic ‘Kodu’ velvet slipper chair. It’s available in grey and emerald and retails for just $99. My personal pick is the statement making ‘Geo’ print cushion – a steal at just $12.

1970’s palette
With 1970’s inspired colours simply everywhere at present, BIG W has jumped on the trend with the sumptuous ‘Dark Wonder’ palette running the gamut from teal, mustard, berry and emerald. Ooh la la!

Brass meets glass
From a side table to a bar cart, jewellery box and lamps, the collection is punctuated by pops of brass, often paired with glass. Aside from infusing a dose of glamour, these pieces balance the heaviness of the collection’s moody colours and heavier textiles.

'London' gold metal bar cart, $49

Oversized florals
The oversized floral trend is one with serious legs and it gets a run in this range too. Bold yet feminine I am particularly taken with the berry toned ‘Dharsh’ quilt cover set and its giant, beguiling floral.

'Dharsh' quilt cover set, $29
‘Heathrow’ bedside table, $39 and ‘Dharsh’ quilt cover set, $29

Super lush: BIG W home latest all about green

Following on from its recent industrial range, BIG W is back for spring with ‘Super Nature’ – a range brimming with lush botanicals, rich pigments and a clean tropical vibe. And while it draws on big global trends, the pieces don’t come with expansive price tags – none of the decor or furniture items cost more than $200.

BIG W 'Marmont' bedding
The ‘Marmont’ comforter set is a standout from the range

“The Super Nature range is all about uncomplicated living! The range is focused on a bright patterned refresh using jungle and floral prints to complement natural wood in the home. The inspiration came largely from the fluid movement of moving indoors to outdoor entertaining which is something that Australians are so big on during the warmer months,” says Monique Yallouris, BIG W ‘About Home’ category manager.

One of the standout pieces is the ‘Marmont’ seven-piece comforter set ($89 for a queen bed) with a bold banana leaf print that evokes the famous Martinique wallpaper. “The beautiful print and contrast on this comforter set make this a favourite. It’s a beautiful complement to white walls and light coloured wood tones which are very popular in homes at the moment. Make a statement – go for print!” says Monique.

The 'Paradiso Teal' three piece comforter set, from $49.

Another noteworthy buy is the ‘Seattle’ chest of five drawers which is a steal at just $99. “We’re loving the entire Seattle range with the light oak finish and rounded contemporary legs – in particular the chest of drawers from the bedroom suite is a really nice update to a traditional style with the two smaller featured drawers on top,” says Monique.

As for the enduring appeal of nature, Monique believes Australians always love a bold print. “The endurance of the natural trend is based on reinventing basic wood items and pairing them with the colourful and vibrant Australian aesthetic.”

As with most of BIG W’s trend-based drops, the range is only in-store for one month so if something has caught your eye, you’d better act quickly!

Check out BIG W’s limited edition industrial collection

With prices starting at just $5, the new limited edition industrial range from BIG W is sure to be a hit – but you’ll have to hurry as it’s only in stores for a month! “The Industrial collection takes inspiration from old factories and industrial spaces, and showcases a range of rustic edgy style furniture that is finished with brushed metals and timbers, making a bold interior statement in any home,” says Monique Yallouris, the category manager for BIG W’s About Home collection.

Fabric bedhead, $99 and knot cushions, $15 each.
Fabric bedhead, $99 and knot cushions, $15 each

Key items, available from tomorrow (9 August) include bedside tables, a chest of drawers, console table, coffee table, bookcase and bar stools. And for just $15 each, the knot cushions are back in four new colourways – black, blush, white and grey. “The knot cushions are on-trend and finish off any bed layering. The Lift Up coffee table is another favourite as it’s a stylish, smart storage option and we love the console table as it’s sleek and modern,” says Monique.

Industrial console and coffee table
Colorado console table, $49 and Colorado Lift Up coffee table, $69

As for the enduring appeal of the industrial look, the designers believe it comes down to constantly tweaking the aesthetic. “The versatility of metal has largely driven the repeat appeal of industrial style, and every season there is a reimagining of how to use it to modernise your home. Seasonal updates with tempered glass, varying shades of timber and metallic highlights have helped to drive the ongoing appeal in the market,” says Monique.

Bar stool, $39 each.
I suspect these bar stools, at $39 each, will be snapped up in no time!

“We are focused on providing customers with a range that is on-trend and stylish, but also affordable. This style has traditionally only been achievable at the higher end of the market so we’re delighted to bring to market an option to suit all budgets,” says Monique.

Knot cushion

“Our customers have told us they want great quality style for their home at affordable prices and we have been working with our internal design team and suppliers to bring together a range that delivers on that. This includes our very own House & Home brand, designed by our in-house team who take cues from global trends and adapt for our market and conditions,” says Monique.

The best buys from the BIG W winter 2018 home range

BIG W’s winter home range drops this week and with items starting at $5 it really is a case of luxe for less. “We believe that good design shouldn’t be expensive and that everyone should have the chance to come home, open the doors and feel proud of the space they’ve created for their families,” says Christine Faulkner, head of Home Universe at BIG W.

BIG W lounge room
Proving you can get a designer look for a fraction of the price, this multi-million home in the Sydney suburb of Double Bay was styled with pieces from the new range.

For less than a meal out, you’ll find faux velvet cushions, jute rugs, pom pom throws, lamps and faux fur rugs. “Customers will find stylish, quality pieces for every room of their home, from the kitchen through to bedroom, laundry and living rooms, starting from faux velvet cushions at just $5. Simple touches of personal style can be added to every room without spending a fortune,” says Christine.

BIG W jute trimmed cushion
We love this gorgeous BIG W House & Home faux jute edge cushion in Ashley Blue, $10.

And the variety store is across the trends, with the focus for this collection falling squarely on texture – a look that endures this winter. “Faux fur throws, cushions, and flannelette bed linen are key pieces to consider. And when it comes to colours of the season, expect to find plenty of slate and hues of blue plus hints of blush and burgundy. Colours are pared back to create a decadent feel with softer textures so that the soft furnishings are as good to touch as they are to look at,” says Christine.

BIGW textured throw and cushion
BIG W House & Home pom pom throw in slate, $19 and woven cushion in grey blue, $15.

Created by an in-house design team, the new range draws on international trends but is user-friendly too. “We have an incredibly talented team of designers working on the House & Home brand. They look to international trends, then tailor to our customers’ needs – and at a price point that works for them. We know, for instance, our customers want kid-friendly products that look great but are washable and easy to care for, so we buy and design to the trends without losing sight of the practicalities of everyday life,” says Christine.

10 of the best canisters to style up your kitchen

With open-plan living pretty much the new normal, and the kitchen one of the most high-traffic areas of the home, there’s increased focus on the benchtop. Aside from keeping clutter at bay, and adding in a smattering of fresh greenery, a lovely looking canister can be just the finishing touch that the kitchen needs. Here are our top 10 picks.

Design Twins tribal canister: I love the world traveller vibe of this chic storage option. $29.

Anna Gare blackboard canister: A fan of pantry organisation, I love that you can re-label this on a whim. $22.95.

Orla Kiely multi stem storage jar: The Irish designer certainly has a signature style and a host of loyal fans who love her modern take on retro colours and motifs. $53.

Country Road Arlo canisters: Available in matte black and grey glass iterations, these timeless canisters would dress up any kitchen. From $24.95.

Robert Gordon Hardware Lane mint canister: Inspired by vintage cut glass, this is elegant and (given the colour) contemporary at the same time. $27.95.

Big W Design House classic eco discovery small canister: This geometric print canister is an absolute steal! $2.50.

Linen House brass canister: Super luxe and multi-purpose, it’s hard to go past a metallic option. $44.95.

Zakkia handmade speckle seagrass container: Made by Vietnamese artisans, each one of these  stoneware vessels is completely unique. $69.

Marble Basics ‘The Essential Box’: While not the most affordable option, this all-purpose solid marble canister is a weighty, heirloom-worthy piece. $150.

Kmart large black embossed canister: I personally have a couple of these and can vouch for their quality and good looks. $5.

Preparing for baby: my checklist

Sponsored by BIG W

Having your first baby can be pretty overwhelming. Trust me, I know! At six months pregnant, I am starting to reach the slightly panicky ‘Have I got everything? I have no idea what I’m doing!’ stage! Although well-meaning people will tell you all your baby needs is milk and love, it’s a lovely sentiment that’s not strictly true (hello, nappies?!). But I was really excited to discover that BIG W has you covered for pretty much everything, from packing your hospital bag all the way through to decorating the nursery!

BIGW05021_4_0028401

BIGW05021_28_8242542_b

BIG W is one of those shops I tended to visit for slightly more random items like Sodastream gas cylinders or door stops. I really had no idea how much baby-related stuff they also sell, but got very excited when Damian and I wandered through their baby section last week. For example, maternity nightie for nursing after you have the baby? Tick! One more thing for the hospital bag (Emerson Maternity have maternity bras and singlets too). And great clothes for the baby of course (we couldn’t resist a few outfits) that are fantastic value for those fast-growing little bodies (including Peter Morrisey Baby). Heaps!

BIGW05021_6_0016290

If you’re looking to deck out your nursery without spending a fortune (and provided everything is safe and functional I see absolutely no issue with that!), then you can get your crib, change table and more at BIG W too. All have Australian safety standard compliance and rigorous QA testing, whilst being classic and easy to accessorise. And I don’t think I need to tell anyone they sell toys, do I?!

Down to the more practical stuff, you’ll also find breast pumps, bottle sterilisers, bottles, bibs, cot linen and baby monitors in store. Plus car seats, prams, high chairs, bouncers and activity mats. When I said they had you covered, I really meant it! They even sell those handy organic baby food pouches, as well as formula, so you can get everything in one stop. And nappies! Don’t forget the nappies! You’ll find all the well-known brands too, like Avent, Steelcraft and Fisher-Price.

BIGW05021_30_8276635When it comes to bathing your baby, they have the bath and the bubbles! If you’re pregnant too, you might like to get in some light reading to make you feel a little more prepared for your new arrival, from their collection of bestsellers like Save Our Sleep, Raising Boys and Up The Duff.

So if you’re looking for a one-stop-shop for your baby and new mum needs, you can’t go wrong with BIG W.

Check out the latest BIG W baby catalogue.

TV’s Jamie Durie moves into interiors with furniture range for Riva 1920

Jamie Durie’s more known for his work outdoors than indoors, but all that’s about to change with his first furniture range for Riva 1920. I had the pleasure of interviewing the TV personality at Sydney InDesign last weekend.

Jamie Dure for Riva 1920 #1_1

As if Jamie, who lives between LA and Sydney, didn’t already have enough TV shows, books, successful businesses and garden design awards to his name, he now has a luxury furniture range, and a very good looking, sustainable one at that. He’s being going to the Milan Furniture Fair for 7 years now, so when Italian brand Riva 1920 approached him, he arranged to meet them on home turf, tour their studio and factory and meet members of the family. “I was over the moon to be asked. It’s very exciting.”
