A stalwart of the Australian furniture scene, Freedom celebrated its 40 year anniversary last year – in an industry that can be brutal, where businesses come and go, 40 years is quite a feat. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to check out, touch, feel and sit on Freedom’s new autumn winter collection recently and love how the iconic brand continues to develop its own aesthetic, designing in house and curating from elsewhere specifically for our Australian lifestyle. The focus is on timeless pieces which can be added to over the years, moving away from the idea of disposable and fast furniture.

Turning 40 last year, Freedom is proud to be affordable and within reach of the average Aussie, but doesn’t believe that should mean sacrificing style or quality.
In furniture, Freedom’s occasional chair game is strong this year! CEO Blaine Callard explained that these chairs, and in fact all furniture, cannot just look good and has to pass multiple comfort tests before it makes it into the range. There’s no point in a fabulous looking armchair nobody wants to sit in, right?! Not in real homes anyway!
This curvy boucle number, Cobble, was my pick and you can take my word for it, they’re as comfy as they look too!
In homewares I loved the bathroom towels and accessories, the bed linen and the lamps in particular. It was great to meet the person who designed the below floor lamp I loved, because Freedom really are designing in house, not buying from one of the huge suppliers who supply multiple chain stores. How cute is the little pull switch and the pleated shade? And of course it’s brass, which I’m always drawn to like a magpie.
This Loft sofa was a really clever sectional with fully upholstered storage/side table sections too, so you have ultimate flexibility to move them around, perhaps deciding you want the side table between seats first, and then moving the table to the outer edge of the sofa later.
Underneath that timber top, where you can place your coffee or wine, there’s heaps of storage (for throws or toys perhaps!) and even a hidden built-in charger for your devices. Love it! I loved the rug and coffee table here too. And that coloured glass vase is part of a range which has apparently been flying off the Freedom shelves.
This stunning Sorrento tan leather sofa was another favourite of mine and comes in multiple configurations and colours and fabric too! And the oversized, Japanese-inspired Grande square coffee table is a beautiful, unique piece.
Like much of the new black timber furniture, the coffee table is made from solid mango wood and made to last more than a season or two! The mum in me sees this as a hardwearing low coffee table where the kids could play lego when guests weren’t expected!
These textured towels felt beautiful and I’m all for elevating something as mundane as the necessary evil toilet brush holder by making it marble!
Cushions are exclusive designs to Freedom and all had gorgeous textures and detailing like embroidery and piping, in gorgeous textiles designed to easily mix and match.
The overall palette is what I’d call warm neutrals and really does have a timeless feel, with the ability to dial up or down the contrast and number of pieces depending on your own personal taste and the size of your rooms and home.
Lighting was another highlight with table lamps galore (everyone always has room for one more, right?!) and these divine geometric pendants which look great alone of clustered together.
Bedroom furniture has had a refresh too, with designers really considering the whole package holistically. I really love the upholstered bench at the end of this bed which could have so many great uses, like in your entry to sit on and put shoes on. And you could store the shoes underneath too!
Freedom have also recently launched a new Australian designed and made mattress range. Inspired by Australian landscapes they are complemented with Warwick fabric on the sides and matching base. They’re available in firm, medium and plush feels.
A sofa from the relaunched Autograph range
Tapping into the increasing demand for personalisation in our homes and elsewhere, Freedom has also relaunched its Autograph range this month, offering consumers the ability to design their own sofa, whether they’re looking for something traditional or contemporary. It offers countless design options with the ability to choose from 21 premium fabric and over 15 leather options. There are three distinct arm styles (contemporary, double and sloped) and new leg styles with three timber colours and a metal option, as well as having a low or high base for easy cleaning. All of this is available in thousands of options for a truly customised piece that fits your room size, use and style perfectly.
“We believe great design should be available to everyone. That’s why we’re creating unique pieces to seamlessly fit into our Australian homes, easy to piece together and personalise to create your own look,” says head of design Kate Hopwood.
Prices for the Autograph range start at $1,439.
Some of the new range is in store now with more dropping over the next couple of months.
Launching with a single store in Sydney in 1981, Freedom was an Australian retail pioneer, bringing design in house well before other Australian furniture retailers. In 2022, Freedom has come full circle, once again designing and curating in-house to create beautiful products for our unique Australian lifestyle. Freedom is part of Greenlit Brands, an integrated retailer that designs manufactures, sources and retails a broad range of furniture, bedding and other homewares. Greenlit Brands employs more than 3,800 people with 300 stores across Australia and New Zealand.
There’s no denying that winter is with us with plummeting temperatures seen across Australia in the last couple of weeks. So, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to bring you our edit of the latest winter bed linen including quilts and blankets that are perfect for cold weather layering.
Adairs x Mark Tuckey: “I never set out to have a luxury brand, it just went that way because I wanted to make quality product. It’s always been a dream that one day we could diversify and make it available to more people,” says Mark Tuckey of collaborations with Adairs. And while the latest drop is filled with lots of gorgeous furniture and homewares items, it’s the bedding that caught our eye. Designed with sustainability in mind, using hemp and organic cotton chambray, the range is classic without being boring, and features gorgeous earthy colours paired with light neutral tones and navy.

As for hemp, it’s one of the most environmentally friendly plants available. Its natural insulating and wicking properties keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Grown without pesticides, it requires little water and prevents soil erosion with its strong network of roots. From $79.99.

Freedom: The latest Freedom bed linen features natural fabrics and lush textures ideal for layering and cocooning throughout winter. There’s jacquard, linen, bamboo, cotton, Turkish flannelette and Lyocel – a luxe blended linen and Tencel. “Our bed linen is effortlessly timeless; it’s all about unique fabrications instead of prints that swiftly become dated,” says Freedom head of homewares Christie Maartensz.
The brand has identified the coverlet as a key winter bedding trend, due to its flexibility and layering properties. “The coverlet is a great layering option on top of a quilt cover but it can also be double-folded as a runner on the bed. Then in the summer months, coverlets can be simply layered with a flat sheet,” says Christie. From $150.

With a colour palette of khaki and amber, and a materials palette of cord, wicker and smoked glass, there’s no denying Freedom’s new autumn/winter ’21 collection has a strong 1970′s feel. Filled with artisanal details, rich earthy hues, organic shapes and lovely textured fabrics, the carefully curated range is made to mix and match. Here are our top picks.
Studio glassware: Made from fluted glass in smokey quartz and amber shades, the delicate Studio glassware range is comprised of tumblers, a champagne glass, carafe set and bowl. It’s seen here with the brand’s complementary amber toned Fusion glassware. From $24.95.
“Dinnerware doesn’t have to be matchy matchy. Winter is more eclectic and fun so we’ve curated an offer where you can blend different tableware,” says Freedom head of homewares Christie Maartensz.
Atticus cushion: A dark earthy green with a quilted grid-like design, we love the moody feel of this versatile cushion. $44.95.
Mesa coverlet: This textured coverlet is quite the chameleon. Dress it up or down and use it throughout the year – just layer it up with a doona in winter and use it solo when temperatures rise. From $249.
Palazzo pouffe: Made from a gorgeous toffee coloured velvet, this is ideal for extra seating while bringing a cosy winter feel. $169.
Dome table lamp in brushed brass: Borrowing heavily from the iconic Attolo lamp, this little beauty is a much more affordably priced $179 and it comes in chrome too.
Cosh floor lamp: A sculptural black metal lamp, this one has serious presence. It’s also available in white. $149.
Mirrors: The new mirror line-up has a very textural feel. Their frame materials range from cane to wicker, rattan and rope making them ideal for a coastal abode. From $249.
Harlem pitcher and cereal bowl: Available in mid pink and this gorgeous olive green, the new Harlem ceramic range will elevate any table setting. From $12.95.
Freedom rebrands to focus on Australian design
Of the many things that COVID-19 has taught us, the value of locally designed and made product would have to be right up there. With international supply issues a serious…
There’s a new look at Freedom and I like it. A lot! There’s also a new energy to the recently refreshed furniture and homewares brand, which is soon to celebrate its 40th anniversary. And lucky us, we have a beautiful buffet to give way to one lucky reader. But more on that later…
Freedom’s new range on display at Sydney’s La Porte Space last week
I was recently lucky enough to get a preview of the forthcoming Autumn/Winter 2021 range. Much of the furniture’s already in stores, with homewares to follow from next month. I was struck by the beautiful muted earthy colour palette, textures, high quality and curves in all the right places! The collection feels timeless and like it would work in so many different styles of homes, and all very well together.
It certainly feels like a departure from the “old” Freedom; altogether classier, more unique and definitely covetable! Put me down for one of those tan leather lounge chairs! The towels and bed linen coming soon, as well as lighting, are real highlights. And the sofa range, in leather and fabric, looks a lot more expensive than it is (with some of it, alongside some dining tables and chairs, now made here in Australia).
Head of Homewares Christie Maartensz explained some of the key differences for the new Freedom, with new in-house designers working in collaboration with product development buyers.
Head of Homewares Christie Maartensz
“We can now develop unique products that carry the Freedom handwriting, following the same integrity end to end. We are designing and buying products from around the world; developing new techniques, fabrications and materials with makers, weavers and suppliers. We develop collections, not standalone pieces.”
She said this will make shopping and pulling together a look much easier for customers as the homewares and furniture complement each other, as well as being designed and curated specifically for the Australian lifestyle. It’s hoped customers will embrace a timeless, versatile look and pieces that last for years, rather than buying too much into trends and ‘fast homewares’.
“We want products that are easy to decorate with, can be versatile, living in multiple rooms and will have longevity in quality, design and colour. We have really considered how we live and how these collections need to work in our homes.”
Christie, who has more than 20 years’ experience in homewares, especially textiles, adds: “We hope to see customers engaging with our products in stores, feeling confident in pulling stories together as we have developed products to be part of families.” And while the quality has been elevated, the affordable price point remains, with Freedom proud to own their mid-range niche; neither bargain basement disposable pieces nor expensive designer.
With 15 categories in homewares, Christie says it’s hard to pick a favourite from her babies, but some things she can’t wait to take home are the Boca linacel bed linen range (“it’s all about textures and layering with heavier matelassé coverlets to complete the bed”) and the new Speckle Turkish cotton marl towels. “I’m equally excited about the Nesst coffee table and boucle Jervis sofa – beautiful!”
Christie adds: “There is a lot of great talent at Freedom and I am very grateful to be a part of the rebrand. We have an opportunity to really elevate a beautiful heritage brand and own the footprint; to be the one stop solution in furniture and homewares.”
For your chance of winning the beautiful whitewashed timber and rattan Callum buffet worth $1,699, please complete the form below by 5pm Sydney time on 11 March 2021. Of the many things that COVID-19 has taught us, the value of locally designed and made product would have to be right up there. With international supply issues a serious issue, and local jobs in the spotlight, it makes sense that businesses are responding. And in interesting news for Aussie homemakers, Freedom is the latest to do so. With a fresh new logo and head of design, things are certainly changing for the business that has been trading in Australia since 1981.
“Much of the furniture sold in Australia is not designed here, and consequently doesn’t reflect the way we live,” says Freedom CEO Blaine Callard of the inspiration behind the decision to put Australian design at the forefront of the brand’s new transformation. Key to the new range will be a focus on our unique way of life (we use spaces very differently to other parts of the world) and penchant for natural materials.
“Freedom’s success has always been built on design, quality and how Australians live. Now we’re updating the brand with a fresher, bolder and more youthful approach. We want to inspire Australians with a contemporary, stylish, affordable range that complements Australian homes, proving that beautiful surroundings don’t have to be expensive. That’s democratisation of design,” says Blaine.
Heading up the transformation, which has been 12 months in the making, is designer Kate Hopwood who is best known for her role at Kmart where she oversaw the transformation of its homewares offering. And in great news for consumers, over 75 percent of Freedom’s product range will be brand new by Autumn Winter 2021.
“I’m so thrilled to be designing for such an iconic Australian brand. For years, Freedom has been renowned for its unique Australian design aesthetic. Our transformation is going back to our roots; to designing and curating beautiful, great quality, affordable products for Australians’ relaxed and contemporary way life,” says Kate.
Known for being a reliable sofa source, the rebrand will result in a range of Australian designed and made sofas hitting shop floors as well as a locally made dining range using Australian timbers. The new homewares line-up will be locally designed but sourced both locally and overseas.
The new collection will begin hitting stores this month, with fresh product dropping monthly.
Kids wall art: Australian made options for all ages
By Angela Reynolds When it comes to styling bedrooms, the furniture, the floor coverings, the window furnishings, the lighting, the linen, the décor, and the storage solutions, are all key…
Freedom have created a beautiful kids bedroom range and I was excited to host the launch event last week and see it for myself. The crowd of mummy bloggers who attended all loved the collections and I don’t think I was the only one thinking that a few pieces would be great for grownups too!
Star of the show is the Hideout bed (above), which at $999 for a king single made of solid oak, is great value. You can choose between the canopy cover shown or another tulle version, to complete the look ($250 each). It’s part of the Luca the Lion story, which features cushions, soft toys, throws, linen and more.
In fact, with the creation of these different ‘stories’ including Ella and Elephant, Dream Cloud and Lady Llama, Freedom have made it really easy for you walk in store and pick up everything you need to pull together a stylish and playful kids room.
I love the classic and not too kiddy vibe of the collections, meaning you can incorporate the style of the rest of your home into your kids’ rooms. It also means that the look you create will last several years. And by investing in quality big ticket items like beds, you can then easily change things up with new homewares and linen if you want to. The Bobbie bed above ($799) in king single would work just as well as a first ‘big girl bed’ as it would in a teenager’s bedroom.
As a mum of boys I loved that there were as many options for boys as girls, as well as plenty of great unisex pieces.
The beds deserve particular mention as they’re not only great value, but several incorporate that much-needed storage. The upholstered Andi bed (below) comes with drawers or a gas lift and in a choice of colours.
The Poppy bed (shown in timber, third image down) also comes with an optional trundle for sleepovers.
After manufacturing kitchens and laundries for over 20 years, Freedom Kitchens has just expanded its cabinetry offering with the launch of Freedom Wardrobes. The range includes walk-in, hinged and sliding door wardrobes alongside island benches and is available at key store locations in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
The hinged option
“Here at Freedom Kitchens we’ve got a wealth of expertise in cabinetry and joinery, having designed and manufactured kitchens for over 20 years. Our customers seek designer style at an affordable price, and we’re proud to introduce the same level of style and value to our new Freedom Wardrobes range – these truly are wardrobes with wow factor,” says Tracy Smedley, director of marketing.
The walk-in option
With prices starting from $3,286, you can choose from 12 door finishes and four interior finishes. You can also choose to include jewellery drawers, a home safe, black frame glass shelving and matte black hardware for hinges, hanging rails and shoe racks amongst many other customisable options.
The sliding option
“The premium materials and finishes used for this range are irresistibly on-trend, but will endure for years to come. Our wardrobes are also backed by a seven-year guarantee, just like the cabinets in our kitchens and laundries, giving customers peace of mind when they invest in a Freedom Wardrobe,” says Tracy.
Wardrobe details
The design process includes a free on-site design appointment after which the wardrobes are delivered directly to the home as ready-to-assemble flat-packs allowing you to choose your own installer.
Although Seb will be in a big boy bed before we know it, and the days of feeding him milk are long gone, I absolutely LOVE the new Incy x Hobbe Rocking Chair. And frankly, why should parents be the only ones who get to have this gorgeous chair?! It would look equally at home in a living room as a nursery! And it comes in indigo or blush velvet with a rose gold finish. It couldn’t be more me! $1,299.
While we’re talking gold and blush, how gorgeous is this new Palm Springs Ottoman from Freedom?! I bought the navy version at the weekend ($299) and it also comes in grey.
Long time readers will know we’re big fans of Urban Road for affordable, on trend artwork. The latest collection, out next week, has some great pieces. This (Sea Stack) is one of my favourites. Find the new stuff at Urban Road from 28 February! We’ll share an exclusive first look at more of the new range on Monday.
This week I’m also loving everything from Tara Dennis’ latest Aquitaine Collection. Living in Wahroonga, I’m lucky to have the Tara Dennis Store on my doorstep and it is far too tempting, let me tell you! If you haven’t been yet, you need to pay a visit!
Available at the Tara Dennis Store, David Jones and leading independent retailers from later this month.
Don’t you think it would be cool if they let you go around furniture and homewares stores, picking what you liked and trying it all out together? Well, let’s face it, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t — within reason– to really get a feel for how pieces might look together in your home. That’s exactly what I did at Freedom’s Artarmon store last week with the help of one of their interior decorators, Samantha Collier. Winter is a great excuse (sorry, time!) to change up your home, so it was fun coming up with a living and bedroom look to share with you. What’s more EVERYTHING is currently on sale at Freedom. Yes, everything!
This first, living room look, starts with the ridiculously comfy Hamilton modular lounge. I really wish I had space for a huge squashy lounge like this at home. I’d never leave it! We took a black and white base palette and warmed it up with some gold, texture and pattern. I particularly like the Ebony rug too, which really pulls together the monochrome with the warmer beiges and browns here. It feels lovely underfoot too, which is always nice when it’s cooler.
The great thing about a lounge like this is it’s a neutral base which you can completely change the look of if you want to seasonally, if you move house or just because you feel like embracing the latest trend. You can imagine this would look great with pastel or brighter cushions and throws too, or even pale timber furniture.
When it came to choosing some Freedom homewares to create a cosy, winter look for this bed (the Hudson Queen Bed in Slate), I couldn’t resist my favourite palette of navy and blush. I’m in love with these velvet Pinwheel cushions, which are currently an absolute steal in the sale. So luxe and grown up, and it’s nice to mix up all the squares and rectangles of a bed with something round.
There’s no doubt that faux fur is having a moment too and this throw is an easy way to add texture and warmth to your bed. When it comes to knitted throws, the chunkier the better, I’d say! Don’t be afraid to keep your bed casual and a little messy. Hotel perfection is for hotels! Who has time for that in real life?!
I added a pop of gold with this embroidered cushion. It’s always nice to have a mix of patterned and plain and different sizes and shapes of cushions. Have fun with your bed and don’t be too formulaic.
I have touches of gold all over my home and while this lamp is pretty bling, provided you pair it with the right linen and accessories, that’s not a bad thing (did I mention it’s less than $50?)!
Absolutely everything used here is currently on sale at Freedom, in store and online, as well as everything else they sell. So if you’ve been looking to warm up your space for the cooler months, head to your local store.
Just don’t go getting me in trouble. Remember to put things back where you found them (if you’re not buying them all that is!).
Lighter than black, but still as sophisticated, navy is the latest design classic to experience a resurgence. Quite the chameleon, you could consider navy a neutral as it complements most colour schemes. Check out our top picks.

I think a lot of us are guilty of never printing our photos. Nowadays, our treasured memories live on our phone or computer, rather than on our walls or mantle-piece. But in my opinion, that needs to change. Below are eight beautiful and affordable frames that will hopefully convince you to take a trip down to your local developer. Because if they can’t, there’s no hope for you!
