Building or renovating a bathroom is a costly exercise, and most of the time it isn’t something you do on a regular basis. So keeping up with interior trends can sometimes seem difficult to achieve in a space where your fixtures and fittings are so permanent. But this is where smart styling comes in.

Having just celebrated a year in business, the people at luxury bathroom and home accessories e-tailer Oliver Thom know a thing or two about styling a bathroom. We caught up with the company co-founder Kaety Thompson who suggests savvy homeowners treat their bathroom as a blank canvas, and accessorise it with trends to inject personality into the space.

Don’t shy away from colour
One fool-proof way to deck out your bathroom is to pick out existing shades in your tiles, artworks or views from your bathroom window, and use them to inspire a scheme or theme for the colour palette. If you are just starting out experimenting with colours, you can use accessories such as soap dispensers, towels and hooks to add a splash of colour and texture to the room.

Use different textures for a tactile experience
Balance out the hard surfaces of tiles, stone and ceramic with soft textures for the towels, robes and accessories. Another option is to use products made of resin, or a soft-touch ceramic for your bins and dispensers, which will add softer textures to normally hard surfaces.

Display beautiful yet practical utensils
Who said brushes, bins, squeegees and dustpans have to be boring? Instead of trying to find a spot to store (or to hide) your cleaning utensils, opt for some beautifully designed products so they can be on display without ruining the aesthetic. The best part? It will free up some much-needed storage space!

Create a signature scent
The bathroom is where most of us start and finish the day, and we should set the right tone for it. The use of candles, incense and diffusers will keep the wet area feeling fresh and relaxing. Plus, there are so many candles and diffusers with gorgeous scents and packaging these days that you can easily swap them out based on your moods and the trends.

Add a magic mirror
You will be surprised by how much a mirror can change up a room. Pick a stunning countertop mirror to add a piece of art to your bathroom. Some of them even come with smart features (adjustable heights, dimmable, automatic switch-off etc.), that will bring you the best light! Mirror mirror on the wall, who has the fairest bathroom of them all?

A hit at Milan’s recent Salone Internazionale del Bagno, the MARMO collection by celebrated Italian design house iB Rubinetterie combines marble with chrome, white, black, gold, brushed nickel and rose gold to produce a super chic range of bathroom accessories that have modern classic written all over them.

Basin mixer

With 72 products in the series ranging from basin and shower mixers to bathroom accessories, the geometric shapes are softened by the marble which is unique to every piece – the different veins ensure no two pieces are the same. Available in white Carrara and black Marquina, we love the soap dishes in particular and their smooth, masculine lines.

Designed by Antonio Gardoni and Federico Castelli, the range is proudly Italian made. “We love our country, we love its ancient and industrial history, we are the result of all this. We respect our origins and we cannot imagine manufacturing outside Italy. The history of our country, the culture of design that we luckly live and breathe every day dictates our standards and marks our steps,” says Antonio.

The free standing, floor mounted bath mixer is very cool too and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before.

“The disconnect we see is that Australians find it hard to make their bathroom or kitchen dreams look like the pictures in reality. They often don’t know where to start, they need to shop at multiple places or fear making a wrong decision – especially given a wet area is not only a major investment, but you want it to be timeless for the next 10 to 15 years. We want to showcase trends, inspire design and allow Australians to achieve stylish, sophisticated spaces without the stress,” says Josh.

We love a bit of bathroom inspiration here at Interiors Addict and the latest pics from Reece have given us plenty of that. Styled by leading Australian stylists Jason Grant, Marsha Golemac and Bree Leech, the pics feature beautiful Milli tapware. Whether you’re renovating, would like to, or you’re simply looking for a bit of interiors escapism, these pics are pretty dreamy. But they also pose the question – just what is your bathroom style?

‘Boho’ bathroom styled by Bree Leech

With its casual vibe perfect for coastal locales, the boho trend is one that just simply never dies though thankfully, it does evolve. With the addition of the wood, Armadillo & Co rug, textured stools and potted plants, this bathroom is pretty gorgeous. But as far as inspiration goes, how fabulous is the aqua indoor/outdoor shower recess?!? We love its mid-century patterned concrete too.

‘Simple Luxury’ bathroom styled by Marsha Golemac

If understated elegance is your thing the Simple Luxury space, styled by Marsha Golemac, should tick the boxes. The marble splashback and copper mirror are obviously on trend but the featured Milli Pure three-piece tapware set caught our eye with its smooth, subtle curves and pared-back forms. What’s even better is that the tapware is available in rose gold, matte black, chrome and gun metal. Yay!

‘Neo Classic’ bathroom styled by Jason Grant

Brought to life by super stylist Jason Grant, the Neo Classic bathroom space draws heavily on the masculine, timeless appeal of black and is complemented by the use of the Milli Axon basin mixer. Not only does it have gorgeous, clean lines but the black and chrome colour combo make this a heavenly pairing. This look is so appealing because of its timelessness – it’s a look that’s almost certain to endure and when it comes to something as costly as a bathroom, that can only be a good thing.

With its hard surfaces of tile, stone and ceramic, the bathroom can be one of the coldest rooms in the house but, with a few clever tricks, it really doesn’t have to be that way. Recently, our lovely friends at Reece shared their top five tips on how to create a more inviting bathroom this autumn and winter.

Heat it up

Heated towel rails are a quick and easy way to add some luxury to your bathroom and will instantly warm up your space. Enjoy the feeling of wrapping up in a fluffy, warm towel after a steamy shower or bath. Heated towel rails are also an excellent space saver for storing your towels and add to the aesthetics of your bathroom too. There are a wide range of styles available to suit your bathroom design and practical requirements, including traditional ladders, swivel, mobile, freestanding and individual rails.

Add warmth underfoot

If you’re looking for a little warmth underfoot then underfloor heating is a clever solution and such a luxury on cold winter mornings. Because heat rises, underfloor heating is one of the most efficient ways to heat your home and is a great long-term investment. Advancements in technology mean underfloor heating systems can now be installed in the concrete slab of a new build and can be retrofit too.

Rug up

Bath mats or rugs are an easy and cost effective way to keep your feet warm in the bathroom. Place them in front of the sink, toilet and shower to keep your feet warm. Opt for a warm colour or stylish pattern to add to your bathroom design.

Let natural light in

Windows, skylights and a clear glass shower surround make the most of natural light and on a sunny day can add extra warmth. Make sure your windows are air-tight to avoid letting cold air into the bathroom – even the smallest crack can result in the loss of warm air.

Colour your walls

A splash of colour can instantly add a sense of warmth to your bathroom on a chilly morning. Warm tones such as red, orange and yellow can help create a cosy ambience in a space.

We’re coveting the new range of bathroom accessories from Pittella. If you’re after a unique finishing touch, the chic range is pretty hard to go past. Rose gold, satin brass and black opaque finishes feature alongside leather detailing and the collections were designed by a select group of Italian architects, for the Melbourne-based brand.

Cut collection

Designed by Maurizio Duranti, the Cut Collection features towel rails, shelves, soap and paper holders, robe hooks and toilet brushes with clean, modern lines. We love the rose gold soap holder in particular but would find it hard to resist all of the complementary pieces!

With unique leather detailing, The Belt Collection is designed by Milan-based architects Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and has a cool, masculine vibe. The leather accents are available in black or brown and the range includes a towel rail, tumbler holder, shelf, soap holder, paper holders, robe hooks and a hair dryer holder.

When design maestro Philippe Starck lends his deft touch to a design project you know the end result will be stunning. His latest collaboration with Duravit is no exception.

Highly functional yet seamless and unobtrusive, the ME by Starck series of furniture washbasins are perfect for modern interiors but timeless enough to complement any design scheme.

Generous in proportions, the washbasins sport thin edges that make them appear seamless from all angles and they’re also available with L-cube vanity units that boast handle-free, self-closing functions and pull-out compartments too.

The vanity units not only look great but they’re highly functional too – we love the addition of vanity storage which is ideal for tight spaces and keeping the bathroom clutter-free. The range is available in an array of sizes and finishes including matte white, anthracite oak and dolomiti grey and floor standing on chrome feet or a plinth panel.

We’re particularly taken with the pair of vanity basins that are flush-mounted on a polished concrete console – great for industrial-themed interiors. Sleek and minimal, the Norm Bathroom Set ($865) is designed by Copenhagen-based Norm Architects. Featuring modern and clean lines, this set is sure to suit any contemporary bathroom. Made from steel and plastic, the set includes a pedal bin, container, soap pump, toilet brush and toothbrush holder.

The quirky Tooth Brush Holder by Outliving provides just the right amount of fun to the bathroom. Made of delicate ceramic glazed in either white, silver or gold it retails for $29.95.

Gridy Me Mirror ($242) is one of the results of Menu’s new strategy to collaborate with some of the most talented designers in the world, in this case Wilhelm Grieg Teisner and Lars Olav Dybdal. Simple in its idea and aesthetic but impressive in use, materials and diversity, it features a normal mirror on one side and a copper tone on the other.

Inspired by an open flower, Lulu Hooks come to full blossom on your wall. Available in five sizes and six finishes, the combination and lay-out is entirely up to you, resulting in every installation being entirely different. They can also be used more traditionally as single items. Winner of the Red Dot Design Award 2010, prices start from $39.95.

The Bath Towel Ladder ($449.95) is an informal and flexible piece of furniture made for storing towels and accessories in the bathroom, or even clothes in the bedroom and coats in the hallway. Designed by Norm Architects, it is made from powder coated aluminium, oak (light or dark) and leather.

Ian Monty is a local carpenter who designs and supplies these natural Cedar Mats. They are available in three sizes (or custom upon request) and are perfect for wet areas such as outdoor showers. Prices start from $200.

Available in two sizes the Tombolo Bath Rack is a contemporary rack available in oak or walnut laminate. With distinctive cut-outs for a towel and glasses, prices start from $545.

Yesterday, gold pieces were among the favourites I shared from Freedom’s latest homewares range. today, I’m all about copper. I’m still welcoming pops of this warm metallic into my home and I think we’ll be seeing them trending for a long time yet. You may not have thought about adding copper to your bathroom, an often neglected room in the styling and accessorising stakes. so why not give these a go? I think the shower caddy ($34.95) is my favourite.

If you find copper a little too glitzy and worry it’ll look tacky, let me recommend the awesome combo that is matte black and copper, as seen in the Otis bowl ($44.95) below.

Lighting’s another place to add a touch of copper. At $49.95, the Helix suspension pendant is pretty low commitment.
