Prefab extension: home doubled in size in just 6 weeks!

With land prices continuing to climb, and the demand for heritage homes showing no sign of abating, Australians are getting savvy with their renovations. One increasingly popular response is the pre-fabricated modular extension, perfectly demonstrated by the dramatic transformation of this early 20thcentury cottage in Perth. Rather than building a heritage-look extension, the design team behind it created something much bolder.

The bold modular extension
The eye-catching modular extension sits atop the original 20th century cottage

Located in the well-heeled Perth seaside suburb of Cottesloe, the original home was struggling to accommodate the needs of its growing inhabitants. “The design brief required three extra kids’ bedrooms, a large playroom and a bathroom. With their children getting older, the family was finding the need for more space was a growing concern however they loved their prime location in Cottesloe,” says Matt Keogh, the managing director of Nexus, the company responsible for the project’s design and build.

“They wanted to ensure that the entire family could continue living comfortably in their own spaces within the home for many years to come,” says Matt. It was also important that the extension complemented the existing home. “Another important element in the design brief was to look at a way to perfectly represent the ‘old meets new’ with a modern extension being seamlessly integrated on an older style cottage house,” says Matt.

But what is most impressive about the process was its speediness – a pre-fabricated modular second-storey was added onto the existing abode, and the owners didn’t even have to vacate the home for a single night! “The clients didn’t have to move out at all during the build which is one of the main reasons so many choose to go down the modular route. The extensions were craned in in a day, the stairs were measured up a day later, and it took three weeks for them to be custom-built and installed. During this time, the carpenters finished off any jobs that needed completing upstairs as part of the renovation process, while the clients were ‘business as usual’ downstairs. All up, this drastic transformation was completed on-site within six weeks,” says Matt. Ah-mazing!

As for the clients’ favourite part or the renovation, it’s the zinc cladding used on the upper storey extension. “People seem to have very strong feelings about it and many passers-by love it. We believe that the clients’ choice was spot on and a great standout design feature – it certainly isn’t like any of the other homes in the area,” says Matt of the extension that is a striking contrast to the white cottage below.

“The ‘old meets new’ staircase is another brilliant feature. It runs from jarrah at the bottom and finishes with pressed metal stairs at the top to continue representing the two styles both inside and outside,” says Matt.

Get excited about staying in with OZ Design’s new collections!

Sponsored by OZ Design Furniture

Even if you prefer sunnier weather, if there’s one really good thing about winter drawing in, it’s the chance to layer up and get cosy at home, changing your look for the new season. As if interiors addicts need a reason to change their décor though?!

OZ Design Furniture have some beautiful new furniture in store this week to take winter interiors to the next level! As our thoughts turn to hibernation weather, our homes become our favourite place to stay in and have friends over. OZ Design Furniture have created their new collections for living and dining spaces inspired by the latest interior trends so whether you’re curling up and reading a good book or entertaining, home is the most inviting place to be. As usual, the brand has its four key looks to choose from: abode, global, coastal and arthouse.

This season, OZ Abode showcases how to create a relaxed feel which is also sophisticated and functional. It’s all about warmth and layered texture. Muddied hues of on-trend blush and deep blues create the perfect backdrop to allow the layering of multiple finishes and colours. Moody pastels are showcased through matt accessorising, thick weaved cushions and a hint of a luxe with velvet touches (my favourite!). Metallic and marble accents (these trends aren’t going anywhere any time soon!) and floral and abstract patterns in textiles, keep the look fresh and playful.

The ever popular OZ Global collection reflects cultural inspiration from around the world, where the combination of soft brown leathers, raw timbers and tribal colours is key. The sleek lines and soft tan leather of the Boulevard sofa combined with the rustic finishes of the new Penfold range are reflective of this look. Natural hides thrown over surfaces heighten the warmth and depth, and slimline silhouettes are given volume with throws, graphic cushions and a hint of leather. Gold and copper accent homewares and botanicals add to the raw, earthy and organic vibe.

Don’t expect any cliches from the OZ Coast collection! This is the beach vibe reinvented! With natural textures and whitewash timbers still being at the heart of every coastal setting, this season OZ Design Furniture show a different take by styling neutral tones with hues of grey, complemented by muted pastels. The use of basket weaves, linen and thick knit wool throws creates a sense of warmth. Another distinct look comes from the use of rustic brown timbers with muted greens and over-scaled botanicals to create a tropical room setting. We love the light and bright Darby dining setting (pictured below).

OZ Arthouse is an eclectic blend of mid-century style with a contemporary edge. This season, the collection is about the balance of sleek lines and light timbers, complemented with accents of monochrome and pastel to create a modern and refined room. Check out the new Violet dining setting, Marilyn buffet and Porto desk. The Scandi influence is very obvious, and works perfectly with geometric, faceted, copper and organic finishes in accessories.

Leather or fabric sofa: how to choose which is best for you

Leather or fabric, which sofa are you?

Think about how much time you and your family (and pets) spend lounging in the living room. At least a couple of hours every day – so that’s a lot of couch time! Needless to say, buying a sofa is a big decision and definitely not something you want to get wrong.

PB_Leather_Chesterfield_Sofa

Usually your space will dictate the size and configuration you choose – for example, one three-seater plus two armchairs, or one large sectional taking up a whole corner. And your personal taste will determine whether you’re partial to a traditional tufted Chesterfield or a more contemporary, clean-lined style.

But the biggest dilemma for most people is deciding on the upholstery. So many of us dream of a particular look but forgo that for “something practical” instead. But there’s no need to compromise. Pottery Barn is here to dispel a few common myths about fabric and leather sofas:

Myth 1. Leather is a no-go for homes with kids and pets

This is such a fallacy! Yes it’s luxurious, but great-quality leather is also family-friendly and very forgiving – in fact it’s one of the few materials that keeps getting better looking with wear and age. Each subtle scuff, scratch and burnish mark only adds to its character, creating a patina that’s beautiful and unique. Look for leather sofas that are aniline-dyed, meaning their rich colour carries through and through.

Myth 2. White or light-coloured fabrics are impossible to keep clean

One word: Slipcovered. Many sofa slipcovers are washable in your home washing machine. So, like your favourite white shirt, the white sofa of your dreams is not only achievable, it’s a classic that is sure to be well-loved and lived in for many years to come. The secret to keeping your cover looking great after a wash is to fit it back on the sofa it while it’s still a little bit damp, and let it dry thoroughly to shape.

Myth 3. Leather will feel too “cold” and unapproachable in my casual, cosy room

Everybody dreams of a sofa they can sink into, one that envelops them like a warm hug. Don’t overlook leather for possessing this charm. Just like a beautiful designer handbag, a great quality leather sofa gets more buttery and beautiful every day. Burnished for a smooth, polished look and feel, each piece becomes softer and softer over time. And when you’re talking about shades of decadent chocolaty browns or delicious honeyed tans, the leather effect is irresistible.

Myth 4. Upholstered fabrics are too delicate for a family lifestyle

This might be true for some fabrics, sure. For example, sofas upholstered in fine silk blends or luxurious pure linen are best left to formal sitting rooms and less regular use. But there are plenty of fabrics especially designed to stand up to the rigours of real life.

The ultimate lesson here is to buy once, buy well, and choose what you truly love – and you’ll love it every day for so many years to come.
