10 non-replica dining chairs

Last week, a little tired of seeing so many replica Tolix stools at breakfast bars across the country, we put together a list of some great non-replica options. Readers loved it, so we thought we’d do the exact same thing for dining chairs. Below are 10 beautiful and unique chairs by some exceptional Aussie brands. Not a replica Eames DSW in sight!

The modern and contemporary Xaria Dining Chair is designed with solid American Oak legs and a black powder coated steel wire frame seat. Retailing for $599 from Urban Couture, it is sure to give your dining room an air of designer luxe.

On sale (that’s what we like to hear!) but for $844 (ah… there’s always a catch!), the Lopez Dining Chair from Jimmy Possum is individual and beautiful. With the pattern placement on the chair completely random, no two chairs are the same. Featuring a fully curved design all carved by hand, the frame is made from solid hardwood.0014458

Probably my favourite chair on the list (I know, big call!) the Scandinavian Dining Chair from Harpers Project is elegantly crafted by hand. Available in a range of seat colours and patterns, it retails for $300 and will be back in stock this January.

Flat pack shelves by Henry Wilson for under $200. Seriously!

Customisable, stylish and arriving as a flat pack (but with no tools required for set up!), the Chevron Shelves created exclusively for Nomi by renowned designer Henry Wilson are an exciting addition to their range.

Henry Wilson

Drawing its name from the interlocking zig-zag pattern first seen in ancient Greece, the chevron pattern informs the beautiful simplicity of the shelves — both in the way in which they are put together and the shape they create when they are stacked. “I love the simplicity and elegance of the design,” explains Henry. “You can add more shelves to the system as your collection grows and simply stack them up. If you’re moving house, you don’t have to empty them all, you can just carry them like a box.”

chevronshelves_shot05_01

Consisting of four pieces of precision milled Birch-ply, known for its superior strength and refined pale grain, the shelves come flat packed and can be assembled easily and intuitively with no tools. Just what we like to hear!

A first for Henry, who normally makes high-end designer pieces, he is excited to be branching out into the world of affordable flat pack. “Other products of mine are usually made from premium materials with high levels of handwork which means they sit at a higher price point. The Chevron Shelves are optimised for mass production which means they can be retailed at this reasonable price point which is great for the consumer who loves design but has a budget to stick to.”

chevronshelves_shot06_003

Customisable in both size and colour, with a stunning array of subtler pastel shades including ethereal green, teal, olive and rose, Henry designed the shelves to be either used as a single unit for magazines, books and files, or stacked in several configurations to emphasise their unique design.

With a unit starting from as little as $150, the Chevron Shelves sing true to Nomi’s aim of making designer furniture accessible to all.

NOMI: a new concept in customisable Australian, timber, flatpack furniture. No tools required!

NOMI is an exciting new concept in Australian designed and made furniture. Designed by you online, made of timber, with customisable colours and other options, delivered to you (flatpacked) free and (possibly the best bit) no tools required for assembly. Too good to be true?!

nomi Time Table

Sydney locals Michael Grassi, Henry Gresson and Tomek Archer have collaborated to launch the new concept. By combining online technology, product design and efficient manufacturing processes, their aim is to provide affordable and accessible designer furniture that can be customised online. NOMI launched at the end of last month.

Award winning designer Tomek, of Tomahawk Studios, has created the range with simplicity at its core. Clean lines and unassuming proportions make NOMI suitable for the home or office. “The collection has been conceived as a range of basics, informed by a series of studies into fundamental furniture types,” says Tomek. “Constructed from solid timber, the adaptable series of chairs, tables and storage each have timeless and enduring qualities that are equally suited to blending in or standing out, depending on the customiser’s efforts.”

Co-founder Michael adds: “We wanted to offer something special and unique, something that hadn’t been seen in the furniture space before. Our vision was to provide affordable designer furniture and create a place where people could interact with our products in new and exciting ways.”
