Mrs Tablescape’s new art-inspired store is bringing joy to Sydney

A new concept store has opened its doors to Sydney art lovers, interior design enthusiasts and home entertaining aficionados alike, as the trend for lushly laden tables continues.

Carolyn Dorrian in her new Double Bay store

More than just a shop for stunning handmade tablewares, the Mrs Tablescape store in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is an interactive gallery of objets d’art: whimsical, practical, and daring. The retail space will further function as an arts hub with themed exhibitions, exclusive product releases and workshops in tablescaping, ceramics, linen stitching and more.

Never one to shy away from the limelight, Mrs Tablescape’s unapologetically maximalist approach equals a no-holds-barred approach when it comes to all things tablescaping. Founder Carolyn Dorrian lovingly curates every item from far flung corners of the globe. Not only is there an in-house ceramicist to hand make the wares, there’s also an in-house painter on the books.

“My philosophy is based on bringing beauty and joy into daily life,” says Carolyn, a lawyer of 11 years who hasn’t looked back since turning tablescaping into her passion (and second career) post-COVID. And what was an online-only store now has its own shopfront in Double Bay.

“I believe art has the most impact when it’s enjoyed in tangible ways – and there’s no better way to incorporate it than through the practice of tablescaping. You make memories around the table with your loved ones. Every moment is savoured with all your senses – touch, smell, sight, taste. The table is really the heart of the home and when we elevate it, we celebrate life itself.”

Designed and built by Mrs Tablescape herself with the help of her family, the concept store pays homage to Carolyn’s love of organic shapes and high art inspired by Parisian interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch.

Beginning with leading Dada and Surrealist artist John Cocteau, Mrs Tablescape will unveil a different artist and theme every month in store and release a limited set of hand painted tablewares to match the artist. On top of exhibiting general lifestyle art, Mrs Tablescape will be showcasing deconstructed fashion art plates dedicated to the latest and greatest fashion icons.

“We have an amazing lineup of artwork and artists in the wings,” says Carolyn. “Our monthly art exhibition will also feature many local up and coming artists. I’m very excited about the Beauty and the Beast themed exhibition that we have in the works! We want visitors to come in and experience the full spectrum of what we have to offer whether it’s enjoying some art or learning something new at a workshop. My hope is that Mrs Tablescape will become an active part of the arts and culture community for many years to come.”

Modern Mediterranean feel in living area renovation

I don’t know about you but sometimes it can feel as if we’re drowning in a sea of monochrome when it comes to the latest interior trends. Which is why it’s lovely when a project goes against the grain like this Sydney home revamp. The work of Marylou Sobel Interior Design (MSID), this Mediterranean style family home in Vaucluse got an overhaul recently, with particular emphasis on creating comfortable, inviting entertaining spaces.

BBQ
The renovated terrace has a gorgeous new outdoor kitchen. We love the pink, green and those Jatana Interiors patterned tiles!

“The interiors were tired and dull looking. Our clients’ brief was to modernise the interiors and outdoor spaces of their family home with comfort and functionality in mind, while staying true to the original Mediterranean features,” says interior architect Stephanie Nadel of MSID.

Terrace

Terrace
Gorgeous textiles really enhance the outdoor space

The redesign focussed on the living, dining and outdoors with a neutral material palette that is the perfect foil for the owners’ bold artwork collection. “The finishes are natural, raw and layered which adds sophistication and calm to a busy family home. We introduced colour in the soft furnishings and accent pieces,” says Stephanie.

Lounge
Lounge

Bespoke joinery was a key component of the renovation and included a new fireplace, concealed storage and large open shelves to house the owners’ sculpture collection. “It was imperative for us to create a comfortable and ‘no fuss’ atmosphere,” says Stephanie.

The entertaining areas were another focal point; the terrace, rather than being an entirely separate space, now connects coherently with the indoors. “The terrace lacked functionality and appeal and it’s now the ultimate space to entertain and spend time as a family,” says Stephanie. The terrace renovation included the addition of a new outdoor kitchen, BBQ and outdoor fridge. The existing pizza oven was renovated too.

And with a variety of fresh new entertaining spaces to use, the home’s owner is thrilled. “We’re really happy with the cohesive flow from inside to outside, and also the use of colour, texture and materials. The outcome far exceeded the clients’ expectations.”

Australian cutlery to covet: bling for your table!

We’ve noticed a bit of a trend for gorgeous (and no less well designed for function) Australian cutlery popping up recently.

After years of dining with bland cutlery and frustrated that people forgot to evolve the tools that deliver food to our mouths, a restaurateur and product designer duo came together to deliver some beautiful knives, forks and spoons under the brand KROF.

After years of research, they discovered the answers to key culinary and functionality questions. What is the optimal spoon volume for soup? What size serrations will perfectly cut the crust off sourdough bread? How do you make something usable, functional and beautiful at the same time? And we certainly think they succeeded in their mission!

Each KROF set consists of 24 pieces making up six place settings of fork, knife, dessert spoon and teaspoon, made with the highest grade materials including 18/10 stainless steel. Each tool is branded with KROF’s signature four prong marks that face upwards when set on the table. The first collection is available in brushed gold (our favourite), matte black, brushed silver or polished silver.

Proudly designed in Melbourne, made with German forming machinery and finished with hand polishing, gone are the days of dusting off the special crockery, with KROF being dishwasher safe too (music to my ears!).

KROF is available to purchase online and Collection No. 1 is $349.

Also on our radar is Black Crate, a brand by Aussie Ashley Tran-Suzuki, which encompasses the entire home dining experience. Boasting a range of premium and ultra modern options for dinnerware, dinner sets, cutlery, glassware, table styling pieces, art and prints – Black Crate empowers us to reimagine our dining space. Each dinner set comes packaged and delivered in a custom-made black crate.

There are four different cutlery designs, with something to suit every aesthetic. My favourite is Faceted (in brushed gold, of course!), but the range of colours spans silver, titanium, brushed rose gold, stainless steel and matt black too. Options! From $350 to $600 for a six-person set.

Black Crate recently launched their inaugural furniture collection, designed exclusively for them by Melbourne architect and interior designer, Elvin Tan. Each furniture piece is individually hand finished in Melbourne.

Available online or at their Melbourne showroom.

Stylist tips to make your next dinner party a hit!

We all love the idea of hosting friends and family for lavish dinner parties – but how often do we actually do it? It can feel too difficult, and quickly spiral into becoming a stressful affair that you don’t get to enjoy because you’re stuck in the kitchen cooking.

Rhys Duggan, national visual merchandise manager for Pottery Barn, shares his tips on creating a dinner party that’s as memorable for guests as it is for you the host (for all the right reasons!). “I think there are four key elements to any good dinner party – nail these and you’re on your way to having a great time, and so will your guests!’

Guests – this can make or break a good party. First decide how many guests you can have; then find a good connection between them – maybe they have a similar interest, maybe they like art, or maybe they’ve been to the same holiday destination. This can mean they’ve all got something in common to chat about – and will instantly mean there’s a relaxed feeling at your soiree. Plus – my top tip – if any guests arrive early, set them to work. Ask them to finish setting the table, toss the salad, or pop the first bottle of bubbly – that diffuses any nerves and creates a collaborative feel amongst your party of friends.

Food – this is a big one, and one that requires lots of thought. Try and choose a menu that means you’re not slaving away in the kitchen while everyone’s relaxing around the table, that you can pre-prepare and then plate up. Share plates are also great running down  the centre of a table  – because it creates a communal feeling and conversation will flow! And make sure you consider your guests eating requirements – nothing worse than a vegetarian turning up to a menu centred around meat!

Music – we all know how music sets the tone; choose a playlist that evokes the theme you’re aiming for – but that won’t impede lively conversation. Or even better – before your dinner party, invite guests to share their favourite song – so they’re part of the playlist too.

The setting – this is the fun part! Pick a theme and stick to it – this plays a big role in creating a dinner party to remember. I love theming my parties heavily – adding drama, and making the table the centre piece – the stage of the dinner party. It makes guests feel really special too.

“So to get to my favourite part – the setting. Think big and cater to your audience.

“Hens party, baby shower, birthday or even a ladies lunch – the setting below is going to get your guests talking. We started off with a white linen tablecloth – and found this great wrapping paper to use as a unique runner! That’s when the fun starts with layering and adding in elements to amp up the luxe factor.

“Well it looks luxe – but it’s actually quite simple, some ribbon to group the cutlery – tying back to the pink in the runner, gold flatware – elevates the table settings, some faux botanicals – which guests can take home as a keepsake after your party, and candles. Plus your menu can riff off your setting too – generous glasses of rose and meringues sprinkled with pistachios and rose petals – you’ll have your friends talking for weeks!”

“Next up, dramatic impact is key here – but the setting itself is actually very simple and perfect for a quick Friday dinner with friends. I am a big fan of moody table linen – and I always think a tablecloth creates the illusion of formality and acts as the perfect base, while the striped napkins add a more casual element.

“We’ve chosen some foliage and flowers to run down the centre of the table to contrast with the inky blue, and the use of lemons as place card holders, bringing everyday objects to the table, keeps the feeling relaxed and is a quirky twist.”

“Finally, thinking of gathering the family for a Sunday roast? You can’t beat going classic – white, blue and taupe, perfect! Fresh white table linen – and for a modern take – run a roll of brown paper down the middle and add some succulents to the setting.

“I love bundling up the cutlery with a little ribbon as a simple feature to each setting. Candles always elevate a setting – and create a sense of ambience, plus they add height to a tablescape.”

Love what you see? All products pictured are available at Pottery Barn.

Meet the must-have, Scandi-style, designer high chair

Not having children, I must admit highchairs don’t exactly get my heart racing, however what does, is good design, and the TOWER Chair certainly ticks that box.

30

First popping onto the scene when Country Road used them in their one-of-a-kind lifestyle cafe (if the tastemakers at Country Road like them, you know they’re good!) the TOWER Chair is a revolutionary, contemporary, Scandinavian-styled highchair.

18

Brought to Australia by Dane Studio, the highchair, with its sleek lines and beautiful profile, can be folded almost entirely flat, is wall mountable and easy to store. Designed by architects, it is crafted from the highest quality genuine leather, steel and wood and is a durable investment piece, designed for many years of use.

23

09

Also recently added to Dane Studio’s offering is the equally stylish Changing TOWER. A contemporary change table made from a sleek coated metal frame with natural leather detailing, it features two wooden storage boxes with acrylic dividers so you can store and organise all your change-time essentials.

But the coolest part is the change table can be transformed into a tent-like cubby house once your baby has grown! The tent cover features a whimsical forest print by famed French illustrator Audrey Jeanne, exclusive to the TOWER range. We love.

Foodie Friday: A Christmas feast with seafood and sangria

foodie friday logo

Fancy mixing things up a little this Christmas? Temple & Webster have you covered. They have many festively styled tables to choose from in their Christmas one stop shop online. We love the seafood and sangria styled delight! It’s a casually elegant mix, with layered linens, organic-inspired patterns and contrasting gleaming copper and crystal. It works if your Christmas is headed outdoors, but you still want to create a special setting.

Copy of 20151111-TW-NNXmasTable34344

To complete the scene, Temple & Webster’s food expert Jono Fleming has shared his recipe for salt & pepper squid with a spicy kick, and a refreshing Prosecco cocktail that could easily work any time from breakfast onwards…

Salt and Pepper Squid

Ingredients

  • ½ bunch of mint
  • 3 shallots
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese 5 Spice
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons white pepper
  • 100g plain flour
  • 400-500g of fresh squid, or squid tubes, (you can get your fishmonger to clean them for you)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil, or enough to fill a medium pan to around 8cm
  • 4-5 small red chillies, sliced

Method

Pick the leaves off the mint and wash them. Slice the white parts of the shallots down the middle and slice into 3cm strips. With the green parts, cut into small pieces on an angle. Place the mint and shallots into a small bowl with iced water, set aside.

In a mixing bowl, add the 5 spice, salt and pepper and flour, mix together and set aside.

With the squid, cut the hoods into triangle shapes, and score lightly in a criss cross pattern. This will help the squid curl up when fired in the oil. Pat dry with a paper towel and coat them in the spiced flour mix.

Heat the vegetable oil on the stove to about 190 degrees, and fry the squid in batches until golden brown. They will cook pretty quickly, in about 2 minutes or so. Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and rest on paper towels. Throw the chilli slices in with the last batch and remove when they are a bit blistered, which should take about 2 minutes.

Drain the mint and shallot, toss together along with the cooked chilli and season the cooked squid to taste.

Prosecco Sangria with cucumber mint syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Prosecco, chilled
  • 1 cucumber
  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1 cup of caster sugar
  • 1 cup of water

Method

Peel and slice the cucumber, wash the mint leaves and set aside.

In a small saucepan, add the water and sugar and on a medium heat, stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the cucumber and mint and continue on the heat for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside for about 10 minutes. Strain and pour into a small jug and place in the fridge overnight. The longer the mixture sits the better the flavours will mix.

To serve, pour about 2 teaspoons of cucumber syrup into each flute or glass, top with Prosecco and garnish with a slice of cucumber, some mint and a few blueberries.

The Block week 8 dining room and foyer reveals

Well, that was a frustrating night of room reveals! It was definitely not a case of the best room winning if you ask me. In fact, the best two rooms (Dean and Shay’s and Luke and Ebony’s) came last and second from last on account of being unfinished. And I suppose the judges do have to judge on what they see on the night rather than the room’s potential but still! Frustration plus! What did you think?

Nevertheless, in my humble opinion, there were two fantastic (unfinished) rooms and three so-so ones. But the good moments were great!

CARO & KINGI (a close second, 25.5 points)

Shaynna loved the Melbourne wallpaper in the foyer and Neale liked the pale grey palette and the art. They didn’t like the LEDs on the floor. As Darren pointed out, they can look night clubby and cheap. And well, they kind of did! They also, as Shaynna pointed out, highlighted the dust and dirt.

carokingi1

Into the dining room and Neale loved the glass table, saying it preserved the sense of space. Darren thought the chairs were beautiful but sitting on them proved they weren’t comfortable!

carokingi2

Shaynna liked that the table was low and simple, which would draw attention to the terrace later. Darren said it showed being on level one was no disadvantage and the view was still spectacular. Shaynna wasn’t sold on the styling, which was too obviously industrial recycled. And the barnacle urn wasn’t winning any fans!

Sorry guys, I just wasn’t vibing this room, especially the table. And I didn’t like the mirror or the urn either. I just didn’t get it!

Our pick to buy: Melbourne wallpaper

WHITNEY & ANDY (first place, 26 points)

The real timber floors wowed all the judges who could see how much work had gone into them. From then on it was up and down! Shaynna said the placement of the art was too low, the lighting too harsh and that if they were going to use a poster as art they were better off having no art at all!

whitney andy 1

Into the dining room and Darren thought the ceiling was phenomenal, the star. He said the room felt really graphic and elegant and Neale said the table was cool. Shaynna said the table was engaging and Neale thought it was genius. He hated the “styling” though, saying he’d rather see nothing. Similarly, Darren liked the table but hated everything on it!

whitney andy 2

On the plus side, the judges thought they did get all the basics right this week and Shaynna said it was amazing that they finished everything. Personally, I couldn’t get too excited about this space.

Our pick to buy: Ingrain Designs dining table

SUZI & VONNI (last place, 16 points)

Oh dear. These were the first words we heard from the judges. Not the best start! Shaynna was stunned that the girls had gone for marble skirting boards (“What is that?!”) Neale and Darren couldn’t get over the poor finishes, saying they assumed they were aiming for luxury but it had been “shockingly badly done”. The judges weren’t mincing their words last night! Shaynna said the finishes were awful and that the mirror only magnified the lift door.

suzi vonni 2

The judges were perplexed by the orientation of dining table, leaving half the guests with their back to the view. But maybe that didn’t matter being that the huge and low pendant light was blocking most of it anyway!  Shaynna said the poor treatment of  the ceiling, the light fitting and the curtains all shut down the view.

Neale said that with every week, the apartment was feeling more disappointing. “I don’t think this apartment knows what it is anymore.”

suzi vonni 1

They were also underwhelmed by the other styling choices with the metal artwork causing Shaynna to ask for the second time: “What is that?!”

Neale added: “There’s absolutely no subtlety in this apartment. The styling hits you between the eyes, the light is too much and heavy. It feels like they’ve gone out of their way to hide view.”

Oh dear. Thank goodness for that Christian Cole table they won in the challenge! I just didn’t like this room. Sorry girls!

Our pick to buy: Christian Cole dining table

LUKE & EBONY (fourth place, 19 points)

The unpainted Gyprock wall was a bad start and the unfinished paintwork was disappointing. It became even more disappointing when the judges turned the corner into the dining room and saw what had been achieved.

“Oh my goodness, it’s magnificent in here,” Neale said. He added it was palatial and every time he walked into this apartment he felt like he was in the penthouse with its luxury of space due to the change in floorplan. “Removing those walls has completely auction-proofed the apartment,” said Darren. Neale said any potential buyer would walk out of the lift and be blown away.

Shaynna loved the oval dining table. Neale said that if only they’d finished they would have been team to beat (until they saw Dean and Shay’s apartment next, that is!). He said they were still in really strong position in the competition overall. How far the second chance siblings have come!

I loved the art, the styling and the light and I’m so happy to see these guys getting deservedly great feedback after their dodgy start.

Our pick to buy: Nicky Kriss art print | Black Franklin console (from the foyer)

DEAN & SHAY (third place, 21 points)

This was my favourite without a doubt, let’s forget about whether it was finished or not! This pair had awful luck with the rain delaying their spectacular floor and you had to feel for them.

In the foyer, Neale absolutely loved the Silestone, timber and metal combo and Darren said it was a bit like the feel Suzi and Vonni had been (unsuccessfully) aiming for. Shaynna didn’t like it at all though! Neale and Darren loved the art choices.

Darren then rightly pointed out that the reason things weren’t finished was the “amazing” floor, which was absolutely beautiful, and they all loved the under floor heating.

Into the dining room and Darren said the styling on the table was totally over the top, theatrical, totally crazy and fantastic! Shaynna couldn’t hold her excitement in saying she loved it and it was the sexiest apartment she’d seen so far. Neale said it had a humour about it too. “I love it.” Shaynna meanwhile was still grinning from ear to ear: “I feel like I’m having a sugar high and my insides are going ‘wow’!” I hear you Shaynna, it was pretty special!

Neale said it was feeling like the penthouse, they’d kept true to their slightly Scandi look but turned the dial up on the glamour. But he couldn’t ignore the fact that the foyer behind them was, sadly, a disaster.

Our pick to buy: Ben Tovin Design pendant light | Autumn leaves artwork | Pink concrete platter

So which was your favourite? Do you agree with me that the two unfinished rooms were the best? Is it fair that they were scored so low?

Josh & Charlotte win last night’s Block living/dining reveals

I’ve got to say, they were all pretty impressive room reveals last night, don’t you think? There was a fair amount of controversy though with changes to architect’s plans, and Dee and Darren not presenting finished rooms. I was really happy for Charlotte and Josh to win though as they definitely needed a cash injection! I much preferred this week’s reveals to last week’s. I just couldn’t get excited about those utilitarian rooms! Give me soft furnishings any day!

Onto the judging…

Charlotte & Josh: WINNERS for the first time!

The Block in Melbourne

It was a great first impression in the dining room with the smell of the real timber floor and the leather. Darren said the floor gave an extra level of rarity. Neale said it had a beautiful sense of simplicity. Shaynna said the dining room isn’t dead and this could be used for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They all loved the dining chairs and when Neale took a seat he said it passed his dinner party test (i.e. was comfortable!).  Eagle eye Darren was first to spot the dodgy paintwork but none of the judges could let it slide. Overall, they thought the dining room was great though; understated but luxurious.

The Block in Melbourne

In the living room, they loved the easy-to-use automation from the iPad and the movie mode and surround sound in particular. Neale said the room lacked a bit of personality though. While he liked the furniture he felt it needed another layer. Darren said it was missing a wow factor but Shaynna disagreed. She loved the simplicity and harmony. She loved the zen, sanctuary feel. Neale was still just slightly underwhelmed though. Ultimately, all three loved it but wanted a little bit more to push it to the next level.

Our pick to buy: Dining table.

Tim & Anastasia: third place.

That bulkhead for the air con did NOT go down well in the dining room. Neale said the room felt small and wrong. Shaynna wanted to walk out straight away, Neale didn’t want to be there. Darren said it needed a big mirror. Neale loved the brass pendants and said he’d take them with him. But without them, he said the rest felt a little generic. Shaynna didn’t like the fabric chairs or the styling. Neale said they were working with a style that wasn’t their own. Ouch!

Onto the living room and Neale said it also looked like a showroom and lacked soul. He said the matching art was a mistake. Shaynna said it made Megan Weston’s work, which she loves, look pedestrian. She also spotted that there was nowhere for the DVD player etc and there’d be wires everywhere. She sad she couldn’t picture how you’d actually live in and use the room. Darren didn’t like the pink in the art, cushions and curtains and said it needed another colour to break it all up. Shaynna said it was too matchy-matchy with everything in pairs (like Noah’s ark, said Neale!).

Our pick to buy: Prism credenza.

Ayden & Jess: second place.

The Block in Melbourne

Neale liked the dining room and thought it worked beautifully. Darren said the chairs perfectly complemented the table. Shaynna said it had a lot of character in a simple way and Neale loved the pendants. Shaynna loved the LED ceiling treatment. Neale said it felt very well finessed and gelled together well. Shaynna and Neale said time would tell if moving the plans around had been a good call. Darren said he was crossing his fingers!

The Block in Melbourne

Onto the living room, Neale and Shaynna loved the light. Shaynna thought there was far too much going on and it made the room feel smaller. Neale agreed it needed to lose a few elements. Darren was relieved there was no couch facing the TV and said it was a more friendly, conversational layout than the one Jess originally planned. He would have preferred a lounge room flowing onto the terrace though. Neale agreed, you change the architect’s plans at your peril. Much as he liked what they’d done, he thinks it would have been better with a different room layout.

Our pick to buy: Mark Tuckey zinc dining table.

Dee & Daz: Last place.

H4_R5_DD_livedine30

Shaynna was first to criticise their decision to change the plans around. They all agreed the kitchen should have stayed where it was. Darren said it was a very avoidable issue and the architect knew best. The more they saw, the more unimpressed they were.  Shaynna said nobody needed a kitchen that big and Neale called it a total tragedy, because what had been delivered was beautiful. Shaynna said the couple thought they knew better and Neale agreed, saying they were now falling on their own sword. On the plus side, Shaynna said the artwork, furniture and styling were perfect.

The Block in Melbourne

In the lounge room, Darren loved the floorboards and the fireplace. Neale said it was exactly what he expected to see and he loved it, that the minimalism was clever. Shaynna said the styling was great but would have liked a window treatment. Neale said it appealed to a certain type of buyer that liked simple sophistication. He wasn’t convinced they’d made the right choices and thought Dee had been hotheaded and thought she knew better than the architect. Shaynna concluded she wasn’t wowed and the apartment didn’t currently comply with building codes. The judges hoped it was all part of a master plan that would work in the future.

Our pick to buy: Photographic prints by Trevor Mein and Susan Knight from Otomys.

So, did you agree with the judges?

Next week: en suites!
