A sneak peak of the stunning new penthouse atop St Kilda heritage building

A stunning New York-inspired residence housed atop a landmark 1880s heritage building, Luke Fry Architecture and Interior Design’s exciting new project, the George Penthouse, will have 360 degree views of the Melbourne CBD.

A perfect harmony of chic modern meeting classical heritage, the penthouse is set to be the crown jewel on top of the former George Hotel (now largely apartments and hospitality), with an open deck rooftop, and 500 sqm of living space.

Future home to frequent traveller Sean Cummins, he gave full creative control to Luke Fry, to maintain the authenticity of the building’s original character while responding to the progressive, ambitious brief. After extensive consultation with heritage specialists, the penthouse design showcases some subtle but simple nods to St Kilda’s vibrant past.

“Architecturally the penthouse façade conceived in both concrete and natural stone was designed in a series of scalloped columns that reflect the rhythm of the original façade and parapet of the original building which can still be seen from Fitzroy Street,” says Luke.

The exciting new project, starting this year, isn’t just a testament to a new style of penthouse living but also the rejuvenation of the suburb.

“It raises the bar for living in St Kilda – especially penthouse living – as there would only be a handful of properties globally that would tick all the boxes this does,” Luke says. “A beautifully designed architectural penthouse of this quality, scale, heritage context and with these views also adds to the neighbourhood’s character and appeal.”

Every possible luxury provided in these opulent Melbourne apartments

No expense has been spared for luxury residence Fifty Two Black, which will be located in Brighton’s famed Church Street precinct. Over 10 different types of marble will be used throughout each home, and in an Australian first, the five opulent penthouse-size apartments (each expected to sell for $6 to 9 million!) will be exclusively furnished in Ralph Lauren Home.

Rendered images of how the finished project will look

The interiors, designed by New York-based Meg Sharpe, will draw upon the relaxed sophistication of Melbourne’s Brighton, and each residence will present a distinctive take on the timeless elegance of Ralph Lauren Home. Meg will incorporate fine china, crystal, silver, and luxurious bed and bath linens to complete the finely furnished interiors.

Architecture for Fifty Two Black will be led by revered local architect, Nicholas Day, in collaboration with New York architecture firm, Gregory Tuck.

Tones of brass, silver and polished nickel will complement the chevron light oak floors and mosaic marble tiling, while iconic lighting, chandeliers and furniture pieces will create a sense of grandeur in every room.

Wrought iron entryways will make way for expansive ceilings up to 3.3m high, while other features include in-home tech automation, remote access for service and deliveries, and 24-hour security services. Each apartment will retail for between $6 and $9 million.

Michael Pesochinsky, president of developer PB&Co., said Fifty Two Black would represent the ultimate in luxury residential living.

“The level of detail and sheer volume of furniture and accessories is unprecedented – all owners will need to bring with them is their toiletries, everything from the bathrobes and framed art to crockery and crystal will be hand selected and waiting for them,” Michael explains.

“Fifty Two Black will create a new standard for luxury living,” he promises “Property is no longer bound by the confines of traditional real estate; it is evolving to be informed by art, fashion, luxury and design. Fifty Two Black will be the epitome of these elements.”

Construction of Fifty Two Black is already underway, and is expected to reach completion in December of 2021.

A look inside this luxurious bespoke Melbourne penthouse

Atop one of Melbourne’s CBD apartment blocks sits a meticulously designed penthouse, almost entirely customised by its new residents. It is home to Joan and Wes, who purchased the entire top floor of Hawksburn Place Residences before the building even hit the market. Starting from an empty shell, they worked closely with the building’s developer to customise the floor plan to their specific desires.

“Joan and Wes’s situation was really unique in that they were able to purchase this
penthouse as a shell and work not just with us as the developer, but the project’s interior designer to create a completely bespoke home,” said developer Tim Gurner. “Every room, every material, every piece of marble chosen reflects their specific tastes – it’s very rare that a penthouse can be customised like this.”

The expansive home spans 345sqm of internal area and another 461sqm of external terrace. It includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a library and a marble-clad kitchen. The wraparound terrace boasts phenomenal 360-degree views of the CBD and a 12.5m plunge pool.

Working with esteemed designer David Hicks, they created a unique interior, with custom cabinetry and raised ceilings showcasing priceless antiques and art the couple have collected from around the world. These antiques include the penthouse’s feature chandeliers, which the couple sourced from Paris.

“The antiques speak for themselves so we provided a dramatic backdrop for them to sit seamlessly. Introducing specific places for each piece with strategic lighting was also key.” said David.

The bold departure from the white-on-white design trend results in a sumptuous mix of chocolate parquetry, smoky walls, and rattan armchairs. The darker, more moody interior palette absorbs and offsets the abundance of natural light afforded by the surrounding floor-to-ceiling windows.

The penthouse is fitted with plentiful luxury hotel style details, such as private access lifts, access to the on site seven-day-a-week concierge, and a six-car garage.

The project team was led by luxury developer GURNER, alongside David Hicks, Cox Architecture and landscape architect Paul Bangay.

Luxury penthouse: A $9 million Melbourne sky home

I don’t know about you but sometimes there’s nothing better than making a cup of tea, hitting the couch and downloading a bit of house porn. And today’s two-storey Melbourne penthouse certainly fits that bill – priced at a cool $9 million, the home is totally unattainable (for most!) but just so enjoyable to tour.

Lounge
The penthouse is situated across from Kew’s picturesque Alexandra Gardens

An architectural beauty, designed by Addarc Architects and Hecker Guthrie interior design, the Kew based pad is dripping with high-end finishes including Elba marble, polished plaster walls, oak parquetry floors and Italian joinery. The home also boasts a pool with a view and a Pinterest-worthy sculptural spiral staircase – an alluring mix indeed.

Bathroom
There’s no shortage of marble in the bathroom

Owned by developer Paul Franze, the home was originally listed for sale in April 2020, right as COVID-19 began wreaking havoc. “The problem with having it on the market in April was that no one could inspect the property due to government restrictions. Pictures may paint a thousand words but a home like this really needs to be seen in person to build that emotional connection,” says Paul of the home that remains on the market.

With a generous 400 square metre floor plan, the palatial home in the sky also features a living room with gas log fire, media room, large dining room, sleek marble bar with fridge and a temperature-controlled glass wine room. There’s also a deluxe marble and oak kitchen with butler’s pantry – integrated Sub Zero fridge/freezers and Wolf appliances round out the luxurious mix.

The outdoor entertaining area includes a large, covered deck with Wolf BBQ, an outdoor fire and a solar/gas heated pool with spectacular city and bay views.

The master bedroom can be found at the top of the home’s aforementioned curved marble staircase, which can be reached via a lift too. Upstairs, there are three additional bedrooms (two with marble ensuites) and a stylish fourth bathroom and retreat.

Other high-end specifications include video intercom, C-bus home automation, designer lighting, motorised blinds and curtains, underfloor hydronic heating, ducted heating and cooling, a separate laundry, two large basement storage areas and a nine-car garage. Swoon.

House porn: A luxury Melbourne penthouse with 360° CBD views

As this opulent, David Hicks-designed penthouse is launching to the local and international market in South Melbourne, we couldn’t resist sharing a little glimpse into how the other half lives! Featuring 360-degree views of the city, Albert Park Lake, and Port Phillip Bay, this breathtaking apartment is located in the exclusive 74 Eastern Road building by luxury developer, GURNER.

The 545sqm penthouse spans three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room, a kitchen, multiple living zones, an office, and a separate retreat, along with a wrap-around balcony and private rooftop pool with stunning city views.

Completed in 2018, the space was designed by the well known interior designer David Hicks, whose work graces the interiors of some of Melbourne’s most expensive luxury private homes and apartments.

GURNER founder and director Tim Gurner says that this residence holds a special place in his heart. “74 Eastern Road, and the penthouse in particular, is one of my favourite collaborations with David Hicks. I remember many late nights working with David to fully customise every single element, down to every piece of furniture within the home,” Tim says.

“The building is unique in that it is surrounded by incredible Victorian terrace homes and tree-lined streets, with the most amazing city skyline views that will never be built out,” he continues.

“For me it is all about that incredible window line where you can stand at one end of the penthouse and see all the way down the 50m length to the other end of the penthouse; something that truly cannot be replicated.”

The penthouse is unquestionably the pinnacle of luxury, boasting a range of high-end features, such as a custom designed butler’s pantry, automated blinds and entertainment system, and electric and gas log fires.

The apartment also contains $100,000 of custom Italian marble used throughout; across every wet area, piece of joinery, and custom feature. The chevron-cut American Oak floorboards further emphasise this air of grandeur. In addition, an in-built hidden wine bar and wine fridge – behind feature glass mirrors – facilitates many a perfect evening spend unwinding with a drink, looking out over those unbelievable CBD views.

Of course, the no-expense-spared mindset means that this penthouse doesn’t exactly come cheap; it is being sold via expressions of interest with a $5.5m-to-$6m price guide, through GURNER and Michael Paproth from The Agency.

“This is a truly one of a kind penthouse – garden-side, lakeside, cityside and waterside; there is nothing left wanting from either the location or the immaculately designed interiors,” Michael says. “David Hicks has left an indelible mark on this penthouse – it’s a masterpiece of considered design.”

The penthouse is part of GURNER’s 74 Eastern Road development in South Melbourne, which was designed by a star-studded architectural line up of Elenberg Fraser, Jack Merlo, and David Hicks.

Step inside St Kilda’s $30 million dollar penthouse!

Luxury developer GURNER has just revealed plans for its impending St Moritz development in Melbourne and if the first-look is anything to go by, it’s set to be rather phenomenal. With an average price point of roughly $3.5 million dollars, the St Kilda project is being designed by architect Fender Katsalidis (together with Koichi Takada Architects) alongside celebrated interior designer David Hicks with Jack Merlo on landscape duties.

Penthouse
The ridiculously high-end penthouse will have uninterrupted views of the bay

“We believe the luxury end of the market has been waiting for something like this to come along, with significant depth and demand for the right project offering the right level of luxury,” says GURNER founder and director Tim Gurner of the project that will occupy 14-16 The Esplanade, St Kilda. The first of the three buildings, Pacific House, is set to launch to the public in the middle of this year with 45 residences up for grabs at an average price point of $4 million dollars.

Penthouse bathroom and bedroom
The penthouse’s expansive bathroom and bedroom

Reflecting the bespoke trend, the purchase price will include a full customisation package giving purchasers the ability to work directly with David Hicks and Tim Gurner to create their dream homes. Think bowling alleys, infra-red saunas and steam rooms, cigar rooms, poker rooms, art galleries, sound-proofed home offices and even recording studios. “Literally anything is possible at St Moritz,” says Tim.

Wine cellar and stairs
Wine cellar and stairs

Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the development is the creation of a $30 million dollar penthouse to sit atop the first building, Pacific House. Boasting 650 square metres of internal space together with a generous 175 square metre terrace, the penthouse will have six bedrooms, a seven-car private garage, direct lift access, four living rooms, an in-home sauna, gym and a show-stopping pool that will sit wedged between two levels of the home.

Pool
Look at that pool! The penthouse promises to be Australia’s most expensive.

“This penthouse has been designed to be the best in Australia and arguably one of the best in the world. We initially designed the penthouse with a floorplan of over 1,300sqm and an even bigger price tag however the early feedback we have received from our local and international clientele was that a penthouse of this size would be too big even for them,” says Tim.

Occupying a space somewhere between a home and hotel, the complex will also feature 5000 square metres of private amenities and permanent staff that will provide residents with personalised and discreet service. “We want our buyers to feel like every day is a holiday as they are spoilt in ultimate luxury by the precinct’s loyal staff and are surrounded by a setting that rivals the best hotel and resort experiences in the world,” says Tim. One Powerball??

Kids Rooms The Block

The Block’s first, apartment-deciding room reveals

It’s been an action-packed first couple of nights on the new season of The Block with the 48-hour challenge kids’ rooms revealed last night (more on that later and our top picks to buy). Not surprisingly, they weren’t perfect, and it’s what we’ve come to expect from week one. Let’s face it, it’s a hell of a lot for anyone to get their head around and to call the state they found the Gatwick Hotel a fleapit would perhaps be too kind! I actually don’t know how they can cope sleeping there without getting pest control and industrial cleaners in. Bleugh!

But the new teams cracked on, and we’ve got to know them quite well already. The stronger characters are already emerging and I’m starting to place bets on who’ll be first to have a big fallout. I personally get so tired of people saying the show should be more about renovating and less about drama. It’s reality TV, people, get over it! And if you don’t like it, watch something else! Ratings and Logie wins prove they’re doing something right so why mess with a winning formula?! There’s also plenty of renovating to be seen.

While these weren’t the most exciting or impressive rooms, there was a lot riding on them, with first place getting to choose their apartment first, and so on. Surprisingly, the slick rooftop penthouse additions were not the first two to be picked and only time will tell if the contestants made the right call there.

We now also know that next week’s reveal is going to be the main bathroom. No messing around there! I can’t wait to see how they go!

So onto the kids’ rooms and the judging…

BIANCA AND CARLA

The former pro netballing friends from Melbourne came third and picked apartment five, one of the penthouses.

Shaynna said their room was “wonderland” and Neale called it clever. The judges liked how it was a playroom as well as a sleeping room.

Darren loved the stone-effect paint but called out the blanket box dangerously close to the opening window. Shaynna also criticised the one very blank wall.

Our picks: Nofred mouse table and chairs and Silver lining cloud rug.

***

COURTNEY AND HANS

The flight attendant and the pilot from Perth came last, landing apartment two, the biggest, which they weren’t unhappy with.

Darren said it was a really beautiful show of effort; cute and whimsical. That cloud wallpaper ended up making the impact they’d hoped but it went a bit downhill from the ceiling!

When the judges looked around they found too many gaps and examples of poor workmanship.

And another dangerous benchseat under the window (are you seeing a theme here?!) also lost them points.

Our picks: Vintage hot air balloon, felt ball rug and Head in the Clouds wallpaper

***

JESS AND NORM

The Queenslanders came fourth yet still bagged one of those penthouses, apartment four.

Neale said they’d really put a lot of thought and energy into it and Shaynna loved the idea of it. Darren thought the vignette of artworks and the shelving were cute.

But Shaynna added it was the first room she’d walked into and felt their panic with many unfinished elements.

And once Darren pointed out the bed built in under the window was not only dangerous but illegal, it all went a bit wrong!

Our picks:  Rainbow hugs artwork and lion print

***

KERRIE AND SPENCE, the eldest couple, a nurse and owner builder from the Barossa Valley in SA, came second and took the gamble on apartment one which contained the mysterious safe. It paid off as it was full of $150k worth of vouchers!

The judges called their room simple, elegant, and appropriate for a teenage girl but it didn’t really nail the kids’ room brief. Yes it was a nice room, but it wasn’t a kids’ room!

They were impressed by the coffered ceiling (I loved it too). Neale said the colour palette harked back to the era of the building but was contemporary too. And Shaynna said they’d done nanna chenille in a really current way. It was clear they were a team to be reckoned with.

BUT (there’s always a but!) Shaynna said she’d be so bored lying in bed with nothing to look at but an empty wall and Neale rightly questioned if it worked as a kids’ room? Shaynna said not at all.

But they agreed the couple had created an amazing perception of luxury in just 48 hours. Let’s not forget what they started with!

Our picks: Framed horse photograph, pendant light and blush vase.

***

HAYDEN AND SARA came first, the newlyweds with a baby from Sydney. She’s (another) flight attendant and he’s a master builder (helpful!). With the pick of the apartments, they ignored the penthouses and went for apartment 3.

Using multiple tradies paid off for this pair. Shaynna said the room said kids straight away. She loved the bedside niche to put books in and thought the tent was fun.

Neale said it had a really lovely feel about it and Darren loved that you could pop your head in to check on your child without them seeing you or waking up because of the bed placement. It had a big open play space which was exactly what a kid’s room should be about.

Shaynna was impressed they’d matched the wardrobe to the entry door which showed great attention to detail and could really only fault the execution of the skirting which was a bit rough.

Our picks: Genevieve bedhead from Heatherly Design Bedheads and Numero 74 padded star garland

Interiors Addict TV: Tour Dean & Shay’s Block kitchen

Sponsored by The Good Guys Kitchens

Kitchen week is always one of the most popular, and indeed demanding (for the contestants!) on The Block. For us, it’s not just about what the kitchen looks like but how it functions and we love seeing all the gadgets and tricks which have been used to create inventive and clever spaces. For the next week, we’ll bring you one episode a day where our reporter Lauren Ellis takes a closer look at the kitchens and interviews the couples who created them. Prepare to see lots of features not covered on the room reveal episode.

Take a closer look at Dean and Shay’s (second place by just half a point) penthouse kitchen…

The pair’s butler’s pantry and sophisticated styling wowed the judges. And their gamble of swapping the kitchen and living areas was shown to pay off in a big way with Neale Whitaker saying it had wow factor and Shaynna Blaze describing it as “knockout”.

We love the gold sinks (hello!), integrated coffee machine, soft-close drawers and slide-out cupboard shelves.
