Australia’s best architects design tiny six-by-ten-metre homes

City living is in hot demand. But what sacrifices would you be willing to make to get that prime location? Would you be prepared to max out your bank account? Buy a fixer-upper with none of the funds to actually fix it up!? Or how about live in a tiny house?

Celebrating sustainable, small-scale architecture, Melbourne’s upcoming design exhibition MINI LIVING – INVERT has challenged 14 architects to design a home fit for a family of four on a unique six-by-ten-metre site(!) at the rear of 200 Little Collins Street in central Melbourne.

Each architect will exhibit their designs as well as a 1:20 scale model on the CBD site from tomorrow until Sunday (4-to-8 October). Free talks will be held on Thursday and Friday October 5 and 6, where the architects will share the inspiration behind their designs. Videos of the talks will be posted after the event.

Held by Green Magazine in collaboration with MINI and the City of Melbourne, RMIT architecture students have also been asked to participate, one of whom will have their work shown at the MINI lIVING – INVERT exhibition.

Introducing The Retail Quarter: the modern trade fair

Sponsored by Reed Gift Fairs.

Reed Gift Fairs is set to re-launch its annual September event in the form of The Retail Quarter, a modern twist on the traditional fair. And it’s just in time for your pre-Christmas inspiration and buying!

With four distinct floor districts – Abode, Galleria, Boutique and Runway – the event will set up at the ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre from 23 – 26 September, just in time for the festive season.

Abode will offer retailers the chance to explore the most on-trend furniture, interior, kitchen, dining – even body, bath and fragrance products will be on show. Galleria will sport an eclectic collection of gifts, stationary, toys and games, while Boutique shares an array of Australian-made, ethical, handcrafted and artisanal brands. As the name suggests, Runway will present opulence, indulgence and glamour with the latest in fashion, jewellery and accessories.

Future Classics Furniture

“Retailers have indicated what they are looking for from Reed Gift Fairs Sydney September, and we’ve listened. A total re-imagination, the Retail Quarter has been designed to offer an exciting new shopping experience to retailers, at one of the busiest times for the industry,” says event director Louisa Theobald.

Mediterranean Markets

It’s not all about the shopping either – Business of Christmas education sessions will delve into the latest changes within the industry and help retailers plan for one of their busiest periods. Industry experts will cover topics from social media planning and design-led trend forecasting, to immersive hands-on workshops to plan your best Christmas window display yet.

Then there’s the Tapas Bar, a contemporary eating experience in the centre of the show floor, perfect for a little time out.

Go to the Retail Quarter Sydney to register.

I absolutely love the work of Alan Walsh and clearly I’m not alone, with the British artist counting Mercedes Benz, Tag Heuer, and the Tour De France as some of his clients!

Artist and florist collaborate with colourful results

Wow, these are just beautiful, aren’t they?

LjubicicandCook_jacquiturk-11

This is what happens when an artist (Alesandro Ljubicic) and a florist (Sean Cook of Mr. Cook) collaborate! Alesandro’s highly textured, abstract oil paintings on linen are inspired by Sean’s floral arrangements and a new exhibition (on now until 24 November) will also feature Sean’s floral installations. It promises to be stunning!

Alesandro is not yet 30 but has dedicated his whole life to his passion, art. He not only owns and runs one of the largest fine art supplies stores in Sydney, but is already highly awarded, and has had the opportunity to give awards while judging art prizes. Alesandro’s awards include Finalist in the Paddington Art Prize in 2009 and Finalist in the 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the richest Australian portrait prize, and also the richest portrait prize in the world.

Alesandro works in an open plan studio, painting four to six paintings at once. He explains: “The main thing I’m interested in is, essentially, colour. The flowers are obviously important, but they are really just the starting point for something much broader that I’m really trying to communicate through my paintings. What interests me is how a painting can make you feel, and how colour can change our experience of things and how it can change our perception.”

Fellow Sydneysider and friend, Sean, inspires the beautiful still life paintings and he frequently supplies Alesandro with the flowers that he paints. For 20 years, Sean has created intriguing and inspired floral designs for private homes, restaurants, fashion shoots, corporate events and weddings with his signature organic luxe style.

Alexander McKenzie’s stunning new exhibition opens Thursday

I’m no art critic but wow, Alexander McKenzie’s work continues to amaze me. These paintings are just magical. Or mystical. Or both. Either way, they’re amazing. His new show, opening at Martin Browne Contemporary this week, reflects his continuing exploration of a narrative within the landscape.

Big_PruningandPlanting

“The title, Acarsaid, is Scottish Gallic, meaning anchorage, and denotes the themes of refuge, reclusiveness and harbouring that are predominant in the new paintings,” he says.
