Mother’s Day 2017: Spoil her with our gift edit!

Gifts from the interior realm have long been given on Mother’s Day. I’m sure I’m not the only one who remembers the first (and last!) time a home appliance was given — fancy an iron, anyone? And while no mother wants to be reminded of the tedious side of domestic life, there are plenty of gorgeous, spangly homewares that are sure to brighten mum’s day one month today on Sunday, 14 May.

Ninnho Diamond bath towel set: These towels are like artwork for the bathroom which is no surprise given they’re designed by the talented artist Antoinette Ferwerda. $199.

Citta Rombo printed cushion cover: It’s the seventies-inspired geometric design and colour palette that reeled me in with this one and it’s perfect for an Autumn makeover. $69.90.

‘It’s Beautiful Here’ book by Megan Morton: A compendium of some of Megan’s favourite homes, this new book is a great coffee table tome for the design enthusiast. $60.

Amigos De Hoy Czar Splash Mat: Digitally printed on low pile, soft chenille, these mats are non-slip, washable and an ideal bathroom accessory that’s perfect for a splash of colour. $99.

west elm copper and marble cheese knives (set of three): Marble and copper combined = a match made in the proverbial. How could she not love these? $59.

Rebecca Judd Loves Home Republic Noah quilted quilt cover: This double-sided quilt cover, from Rebecca Judd’s latest collection, features a marble print on one side and gorgeous grey quilting on the other. From $139.95.

Anrol Designs personalised wooden spoon: Your child’s drawing printed on a wooden spoon makes a gorgeous keepsake for grandma. $25.

Rose St Trading Co Initial jewellery box: Combining lacquered wood with a velvet interior and brass initial detailing, this is the sort of luxury item a mum would never buy for herself. $119.95.

Shop Marks & Spencer homewares online with delivery in days!

Sponsored by Marks & Spencer via Shopping Links

OK, this is very exciting news, guys. Being a Pom, I have long been a fan of Marks & Spencer or good old M&S as it’s commonly known. I’ve grown up with this iconic British brand and when they started shipping here last year, it made my day. Most of Seb’s favourite baby outfits are from there! But what I didn’t realise was that you could also shop their homewares from here too. I assumed it was clothes only. This is both excellent and dangerous (for my bank balance) news.

So, being the martyr that I am, I have road tested the shopping experience for you. Marks & Spencer now have a dedicated Australian site so make sure that’s the one you’re browsing. I imagined the edit for us Aussies would be small and only things which were light to ship by air but I was wrong, there’s heaps to choose from! From bedding, towels, ready made curtains, throws and cushions, to kitchenware, bakeware, accessories and candles, to crockery, bathroom accessories, clocks and door knobs, you really can pretty much decorate your entire home. And shipping is free over $100.

My parcel arrived in just three days. I was so impressed. It was extremely well packaged and only one item, a candle lid, was sadly broken (I contacted customer service via the website about this and received an email apology and PayPal refund within hours. Too easy!). In fact, on opening the package my first thought was what a great place this is to buy gifts as everything comes so nicely packaged (but also with decent robust outer packaging for transit).

The Conran Medallion, solid marble for a mere $45!
The Conran Medallion, solid marble for a mere $45!

I was reassured to see that M&S is still providing exactly what I’ve always known it for: quality and value. Although it’s high street store in the UK, it’s very much known for selling a higher quality product and its prices are very fair. While I’m all for supporting local businesses, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing some of your shopping overseas. It open you up to so much choice and having something a little different to everyone else. And when the prices are great too (and the shipping free), even better!

20160731_102712

I was thrilled with my purchases. My favourites would have to be the M&S Collection Pom-Pom Throw (this is large and beautiful quality for $124), the Conran Medallion (a ridiculously good marble buy for $45 and fab decor piece) and the 2 Aperture Metal Frame in polished brass for $32 (it looks like it cost so much more).

For the kitchen, where I love adding touches of gold (okay, everywhere in my home!), I picked up this fab Metal Ornate Fruit Bowl for $35, Small Sand Timer for $27 and Marble Platter for $35.

20160804_112052

It’s always fun to update your home with new decor pieces and those finishing touches really can make all the difference. If you love creating vignettes in your home and you don’t want the same old same old items all your friends have, check out the M&S offering. You’ll probably find things which look a lot more expensive than they are too. I love this antique-look Magnifying Glass, a snip at $17, and these Alphabet Scented Candles would make wonderful little gifts for just $11 and come in a great box.

Screen Shot 2016-08-04 at 11.38.15 AM

While I definitely do not need anymore cushions in my house, I was sorely tempted by the gorgeous mix ‘n match nature of their alphabet cushions which would again make fab gifts.

Although there are many on trend items to pick from, I think what M&S really excels at is quality classic items.

20160804_111800 (1)

What I also love about Marks & Spencer is the department store effect: you can buy so many things under the same roof and this makes for a great shopping experience. Even better online when you don’t have to go up and down the escalators. So if you happen to want some baby clothes, lingerie or socks for your husband while you’re stocking up on linen, go for it!

Another fear with shopping heavier homewares items online from overseas can be a hefty postage bill if you need to return something. Thankfully M&S have made this process streamlined too with returns to a local address rather then back to the UK. You may return or exchange unused products within 35 days of purchase with a valid parcel summary document. Your items don’t even need to be in the original box or bag as long as they’re securely packaged. You even have the option to post them or have a courier collect from your home from $5.95. Any refund will automatically be issued to the original payment method used when placing your order (i.e. card or PayPal account).

So, what are you waiting for? Time to try M&S homewares for yourself?

Store profile: Brisbane’s Happiness Place

There’s a place for subtlety but Brisbane store Happiness Place is, thankfully, not it!

Store Interior 2

Happiness Place is a homewares and gift store dedicated to all things bright and beautiful, believing in the power of colour, the warmth of a handwritten card, the pure joy of over-the-top party decorations and the thrill of a spectacularly presented gift.

Owned by mother and daughter team Lorilie Cunningham and Stephanie Rooke, Happiness Place was born from their mutual love of colour and entertaining, and further inspired by their years of living in the US and UK respectively. Embracing the visual feast and ‘theatre’ of American retail and packaging, as well as nodding to the no rules quirk and eccentricity of English design and decorating, Happiness Place claims to be unlike any other store in Australia with its wild treasure trove of homewares, stationery, partywear and gifts.

Lorilie and Stephanie

Beneath the store sits the Happiness Place Studio, home to creative workshops and sessions hosted by Lorilie and Stephanie, covering everything from wild Christmas tree decorating to fearless use of colour in the home.

The shop stocks a huge array of brands including UK ceramic artist Mary Rose Young, an extensive range of Kate Spade New York, Italian brands Miho Unexpected Things and Seletti, the divinely floral UK brand Bluebellgray, as well as being one of Australian brand Mrs Darcy’s biggest stockists.

They have recently been appointed as the first Australian retailer to carry the UK furniture brand Squint Limited, which will land in store by August.

Win an Interiors Addict x Caring Canary Exclusive Care Package for someone special

Quitting her job to help take care of her terminally ill father, Georgia Harley witnessed many friends and family visit, sheepishly bearing flowers or chocolates even though they knew their gifts seemed trivial.

IMG_6376

Realising there was a gap in the market for thought-out, personalised gift packages, Georgia wanted to make it easy for people to show that they cared, and for people who were going through a tough time to really feel special. So, she formed Caring Canary, the one-stop-shop for unique and personalised care packages. “I know it’s not possible for someone to leave work to spend the day comforting their best friend who’s unwell; for a boss to show their employee how much they appreciate their overtime; for a partner to give a hug while they’re away on a work trip; or to spend the day on the couch with your friend who has just been dumped,” explains Georgia. “Caring Canary comes to the rescue when friends, colleagues, lovers and family members need it most.”

Hipster Mum x Interiors Addict Mother’s Day Gift Guide 2015

We invited the lovely Jade Warne from Hipster Mum to collate our Mother’s Day Gift Guide for us. Time to get shopping if you haven’t yet!

Jade Warne from Hipster Mum
Jade Warne from Hipster Mum

Pot pourri? Bath bombs? C’mon, you know your mum better than that! This year, why not give her something as gorgeous and clever as she is. Here, four super-stylish mums spill the beans on what they’d really love on May 10…

Elizabeth Rowe, communications manager and blogger from SqueakandSquirrel.com

hipstermum_mday_squeaksquirrel_2

I favour handmade over store-bought on Mother’s Day because I love the thought behind bits and pieces crafted with heart. Every year, I make something for my mum who in turn helps my daughter, Alice, put together a surprise for me. I will never part with these small gifts, just as mum has kept everything my sisters and I have ever made her.

So, what to craft this Mother’s Day? I love these three easy DIYs. Remember, the most meaningful gifts often cost next-to-nothing, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to spend a lot to give more:

Bake or buy your mum’s favourite pastry (or cake) and top it with flowers. Sweet as pie! Image and instructions via The Proper Blog.

Turn your favourite Instagram family photo into a puzzle using teeny wooden blocks and let your mum piece together her loved ones. Image and instructions via eHow.

Draw ballet flats onto a calico drawstring bag to fill with shoes or other small treasures; an artwork and hiding place in one. Image and instructions via Made With Lof.

PS. My little one Alice has designed a bunch of piggybank-friendly bracelets and necklaces for mums who fancy beads and bells. They ship with cute cards and optional wrap.

Jackielyn Powell, food stylist and photographer at Insidethetreasurechest

JACK-MDAY-

From a background in advertising, Jackielyn found that becoming a mum inspired her to switch career paths and pursue her dream of becoming a food stylist: “When you have little ones, you realise that time you have to yourself is too precious not to be doing exactly what you love.” With campaigns for Gelatissimo and Jax Coco under her belt in 2015, this mama of two has her eye on Mother’s Day loot that will do double duty at home and in her shoots.

kikki.K Ceramic Svenska Hem Collection ceramics, from $5.95: I have two sets of these beautiful mugs and saucers already. They look expensive, but are actually totally affordable and come up beautifully in photos.

Porter’s Paints Crackle Medium, $37.40: When you’re taking photographs in your home, you really notice things like chipped paint and worn furniture. I’m keen to give my favourite wooden pieces a new lease on life without losing that lived-in look. Porter’s Crackle Medium is perfect for this; it goes on between coats of paint and works to give the top coat a cracked, distressed finish.

The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck, $US40: Kim Krans is an artist, writer and yogi with a 50K following on Instagram. A large part of her following is credited to the incredible energy she’s poured into the illustrations that appear in these cards. My current deck is getting a little tired, but these will be perfect for a quick read while waiting for dinner or when friends drop by for a cuppa.

As a mum of two — Talo (4 months) and Otto (3) — graphic designer Elsie says her Mother’s Day wishlist is comprised of just one thing: sleep. That said, any of the clever home treats below would be a bonus.

Mr and Mrs White, Brass + Oak Block Lamp, $230: I met Sasha White when we renovated our kitchen this year and fell in love with her style (check it out on Instagram). Minimalism can often seem cold in real life, but her pieces are always warm, functional and incredibly stylish.

Australian White Grape Refills, $27, Murchison-Hume: The amount of surface cleaning that goes on in my house has really gone up a notch in the last four months! Murchison-Hume products are eco-friendly, specifically designed to be safe for kids and look great sitting on the benchtop. Love.

Sole Society Cassidy Vegan Weekender, $69.95: I’m from the UK so we head back there at least once a year. I’m always on the lookout for bags big enough to stash all our family essentials, but small enough for the overhead compartment. These tick the box while looking great, plus they’re vegan, which has the animal lover in me smiling.

Me! Jade Warne, photographer and blogger from Hipster Mum

HIPSTERMUM-8411

Now that I have kids of my own, Mother’s Day for me is all about giving back to my mum. She’s the coolest, cleverest person I know, but she doesn’t always have time to shop for the coolest, cleverest stuff, so I take it as my duty to deck her out in the kind of gear that makes the other mums ask “where did you get that?”.

Succulents from Flower Power, from $5: I’m obsessed with the clean, chic look of succulents around the house, and with their desert-surviving talents, I’m pretty hopeful that these guys could survive the nuclear dead zone that is mum’s garden (RIP maiden hairs)?

succulent

Plum & Bow Alia Duvet Cover, $169: On the list of Snuggliest Places on Earth, mum’s bed already comes in at number one. And these pompoms will absolutely confirm that there ain’t no place ever going to knock her off the top spot.

duvetcover

Natalie Alamein clutch, $250: What with all the bags my mum carries (school bags, work bags, gym bags) the last thing she needs is another one. Instead, I’m desperate to get her a fun little clutch to stash her keys/wallet/phone and make all the other mums jealous when she walks in to get her coffee!

Jen discovers the perfect place to buy gifts for stylish men

I alway struggle with gifts for the stylish men in my life and, working in the interiors industry, there are many of them, not to mention my long-suffering and well-dressed husband! So this Christmas, I was really happy to discover The IT Kit, an online gifting solution with options for everyone, but more than usual for the guys. Finally!

TheITKit-8_web

They gave me the opportunity to put together two gifts for my interior designer friends Darren Palmer and Greg Natale and these are now available via their site. I thought I’d share them with you.

For family man Darren, who likes to kick back and relax with his husband and son when he isn’t working (and he works super hard, always flitting about the country juggling filming commitments for The Block, design work and endorsements), I chose this fab picnic kit (which is pleasantly neutral and contains yummy edibles, a cheese board and a picnic blanket) and added the French cider option (I mean, why wouldn’t you?!). Then, for good measure, I threw in the fun book The Man Plan. Buy exactly what I bought Darren for the man in your life here.

Some of Greg’s favourite things are fashion, geometric patterns, wine and international travel. For him, I picked Wallpaper City Guides to Paris, London and New York, a fab Kate and Kate geometric cotton blanket in shades of grey and the Nuance Wine Aerator for when he enjoys a glass of red. You can gift someone exactly what I gifted Greg here.

Whether you choose one of The IT Kit’s curated gifts (the easy option!) or compile your own from all their products, everything comes beautifully gift wrapped at no extra charge. The business is the brainchild and passion of good friends Anna Gurry and Miranda Kent. Whether you’re looking for a birthday, new baby, corporate wedding or ‘just because’ gift, they have you covered.

Stylist Jason Grant’s Christmas gift wrapping tips

Wrapping presents can be in equal parts exciting and daunting. What are Jason’s top tips? “Keep it simple. Choose one wrapping paper and one type of ribbon for a streamlined look and maximum impact. En masse they will look neat and uniform. A tip for wrapping: make sure you don’t use too much paper on each present, excess will look messy. Measure and cut the paper to size so you have just enough. Precision folding is best and use good tape and sharp scissors.”

Jason’s step by step guide to wrapping presents

1. Be prepared: Use good tape and sharp scissors. Avoid excess paper for a neater finish.

2. Precision: Don’t rush. Measure twice, cut once.

3. In the fold: If you’ve cut just the right amount of paper, folding the ends should be simple. A nice square edge always looks best.

4. Theme: Choose wrapping paper that has personality. Have a common theme so people recognise your presents under the tree.

5. Finishing touches: don’t be afraid to dress up your gifts. A simple decoration does the trick.

Easy but impressive Christmas gift wrapping tutorial

If you’re anything like me, you always start the Christmas season with the best intentions. You fantasise about getting your shopping done early, giving people the most unique and heartfelt gifts and wrapping them up with a nice little bow. But come Christmas Eve, that dream is a distant memory, and instead it becomes a mad dash to the finish line! And where do you cut corners? You get rid of that lovely wrapping!

But this year Typo want to change that. So they’re sharing this step by step guide to a Vintage Woodlands wrapping look with us and it is absolutely gorgeous. And, allegedly, hassle free!

Instructions:

1. Choose your base paper (we love a good kraft paper base) and wrap your present using on-a-roll tape ensuring all edges are nicely creased.

2.
Using a contrasting paper, either another bold print or a complimentary solid colour (we’ve opted for classic kraft paper), cut a strip about half of the width of your present. Tuck the edges of the paper underneath (the best trick to hide your messy edges) and wrap around the centre of the present, taping it at the bottom of the present.

Place a doily smack bang in the middle for a bit of vintage love. Grab your trim of choice — we can’t overlook the jute twine for a more rustic look and to stay in a neutral colour scheme. Wrap it around the centre of your present three or four times, crossing it over itself each time. Fasten by tying a knot.

3.
Using one of Typo’s wooden ornaments, write a personalised message to your recipient and affix to the gift using the jute twine.

That’s it! An amazingly simple yet standout gift to place under the tree!
