Patterned carpet: If Greg Natale says so, we’re in!

Award-winning interior designer Greg Natale has announced a second Axminster carpet collaboration with Designer Rugs, an evolution of the original collection launched in 2014.

Perfect for both classic and modern interiors, Greg’s new direction takes a creative broad sweep in its exploration of nostalgic influences, scaled-up patterning and vibrant multicolour combinations.

So, is patterned carpet cool again? Designer Rugs’ Christine MacDonald says yes: “We’ve definitely noticed an increase in demand for patterned carpet, and the advancements in Axminster carpet weaving have definitely had an impact. Small repeats and pixelated, boxy patterns are a thing of the past – organic designs and soft textural designs are much more achievable with today’s technology.

“Maximalism is definitely also on the rise – carefully curating mixed patterns can create a bold and surprisingly sophisticated look. Greg Natale is the perfect example of masterful pattern mixing, and using patterned carpet in a modern way.”

Presenting eight brand new designs, the collection is suited to both commercial and residential use thanks to its range of motifs and diversity of colours.

Greg says: “Conceiving this family of carpets was a really enjoyable process. I set out wanting each of them to present their own distinct personality and set themselves apart from the next, so I have assembled an energetic pastiche of colours and patterns that I can already see being used in contemporary to classical spaces.”

Christine says Axminster has a lot of advantages over other types of carpet. “One of the main reasons we love it is its versatility from a design perspective. Unlike other carpet types, Axminster allows you to create complex designs with great precision, creating limitless opportunities. You can also use up to 16 colours in a single carpet design, tailoring the design to perfectly suit your space.”

The high wool content carpet is also super durable, which is why it’s so often used in high end hotels. “You can expect this carpet to last! The ability to create detailed line-work is also very practical for hiding dirt and stains, much better than a plain coloured carpet would.”

Embracing the capabilities of Designer Rugs’ renowned in-house design and production teams, this collection also extends the potential for the customer with the possibility of customisation in pattern repeat, colour ways and scaling.

The Greg Natale Carpet collection is available now, with both in-stock and custom options.

Darren Palmer on his new Myer range: a “pinch yourself moment”

Darren Palmer was one of the first people I profiled here on Interiors Addict so I have followed his career with great interest (and indeed pride as he has become a friend too). Not content with being a judge on top-rating show The Block, producing stunning interior design for his clients, being an ambassador for brands like Audi and penning two interiors books, he now has his own homewares range with top department store Myer. I was lucky enough to attend the launch last month and am now coveting almost everything for my home (for now, I have the navy linen on my bed and it feels amazing). And there’s a lot of navy here, which pleases me no end! The collection is a true reflection of the man behind it and there’s no surprise he has filled his Bondi home with his own wares (well, wouldn’t you?!).

Darren Palmer says his Myer collaboration is a dream come true

It’s a dream come true for Darren but he still can’t quite believe it’s happened! “A range of product has been part of my plans for several years and I’ve been approached in the past from other partners but I have really sat on my hands and waited for Myer as they were the pinnacle of partnership in my mind. No one has the reach and market that Myer has. They’re a premium, yet achievable brand, and I like to think that is positioning we share,” he says. “It’s one of those pinch yourself moments. I can’t be more grateful than I am right now. It’s the culmination of years of work and development and it’s only the beginning.”

The Darren Palmer collection Tuberose Cotton Sateen Jacquard Queen Size Quilt Cover Set in White $249.95

His first meeting with Myer was in fact years ago. “The timing and the proposition wasn’t quite right. I had to bide my time. So I waited and kept in contact with them, having faith that everything would line up in the right way at the right time. When I joined my management agency, Chic Management, they worked closely with a company that worked with Myer in licensing and they had had several successes with other big brands and well known personalities so I knew I was in good hands. I think we were working together for six months before the Myer relationship started to move ahead again, and when it did, it worked out well and swiftly.”

Just a few of the many gorgeous cushions, from $79.95.

Darren worked with Myer to craft pieces and create a range that reflected both his creative and Myer’s commercial objectives.  “It was a real team effort.”

One of my favourites: The Darren Palmer collection Agate sculpture. $79.95

The range has something for everyone with three pillars:  luxe, coastal and classic. “All the pieces work well alongside each other but also as capsules within the range. Anyone can buy with certainty that what they take home will work and really add life and layers to their home.”

Ombre metallic glass vase, $49.95

And his favourites? “I love the coral (it’s resin, before you ask). I love the Reed Belgian Flax Linen bedding collection, it’s heaven to sleep in. I love the beaten metal bowls but I really love every piece in the range.  The sheets and bedcovers are elegant and timeless, the decorative cushions are highly detailed and embellished. I love it all. It looks fantastic in my house!”

The only challenge was editing the collection and deciding what to keep back for next season.

“The range is really reflective of my style and I have every piece in my house.  My bookshelves are transformed for the better and my bed has never looked more amazing,” Darren says.

The Darren Palmer collection `Reed’ Belgian Flax Linen queen size flat sheets in Grey, Navy, White and Tobacco, $199.95 each

“This is the first of many seasons absolutely. I like to think this is the beginning of the next part of my career so I’ll just say watch this space.”

The Darren Palmer collection is available exclusively at Myer stores nationwide and online.

Haymes and Etsy team up for perfect colour collaboration

The recent collaboration between Haymes Paint and Etsy is definitely worth getting excited about. Fabulous colours combined with beautiful handmade products? What’s not to love!

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71505

At the root of this collaboration is Haymes’ desire to change the way they release colours. Shifting from set release dates for ranges, they are developing a ‘Colour Library’, where new hues will be released as they become relevant to the style scene.

Wendy Rennie, colour and concept manager at Haymes, says the rise of digital platforms is changing how people access trends. “We are seeing a more fluid environment when it comes to colours and trends. The Colour Library allows us to move away from putting a date on colour.”

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71568

To help celebrate the launch of this innovative way of releasing colours, Haymes teamed up with Etsy. What better partner than the online marketplace of creativity and individual design itself?

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71662

Haymes were inspired to work with Etsy after seeing the breadth of beautiful and unique talent available from the site’s artisans. They gave 11 local Etsy makers the colour palette of Curate (the first of seven volumes in the library) and encouraged them to run free with it.

The results are stunning. The artists have brought the library to life, making gorgeous ceramics, textiles and artworks with the blue, coral, tan and cement hues (as the swatches below show).

Curate_palette

What’s even nicer is that each product and colour combination has a unique backstory, reflecting the diverse background of Etsy’s makers.

Bea Bellingham, for example, is a ceramicist from Sydney. Her playful range of homewares is gorgeous, using the Curate colours to create a fun 100s and 1000s pattern. They really look like fairy bread! Pictured below, the bottom left ceramic cup.

Gemmola_Haymes_ColourLibrary71710

Alistair Birrell, better known as Mr Draper, has used the natural hues to create beautiful homespun textiles (see the rust cloth pictured above). Tired of the disposable nature of cloth homewares, he was inspired to join Etsy to create something more long-lasting. Originally a military man, his pieces are both beautiful and, to use his words, “ruthlessly practical”.

Curate was launched in Sydney this week. With six more libraries to be released, the potential for even more exciting colours and collaborations only grows.

Check out Curate and the other libraries.

Greg Natale’s second designer wallpaper range for Porter’s

Following the successful Stripes collection, Porter’s Paints have teamed up with Greg Natale on his second wallpaper range and I like it even more than the first! Officially launching tomorrow, I can’t get enough of these new designs.

03

“With a shared affinity for pattern, we were eager to collaborate with Greg in an exploration of textural presence and form on a two-dimensional medium. Scale and colour were finely tuned to create depth, articulate and expand the sense of a room.”

Greg says: “I’m constantly inspired by pattern – its versatility, its energy and its endless possibilities. For the second time, Porter’s Paints have given me the opportunity to extend my love of pattern into the glorious world of wallpaper, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. The sophisticated geometrics, dynamic lines and comprehensive range of colours in this collection have something for all lovers of pattern.”

01

05

Available online and in store, Collection II offers six exciting new designs that are a chic play on primary shapes in a carefully curated range of colours. In true Greg style, the wallpapers tie into each other, creating a tailored continuity.

04

All these designs are so fab, I actually can’t pick a favourite!

Greg’s on a roll, as usual. It’s still only January and last week he revealed his first tile collection for Teranova!

Greg Natale’s stunning tile range for Teranova

Interior designer Greg Natale’s new range of tiles for Teranova are jaw-droppingly beautiful, are they not?

08

Known for his use of tiles to add detail, warmth and drama, bringing rooms to life, it’s fitting that Greg now has his very own range. It is his first collaboration with Sydney-based Teranova, who produce a range of beautiful tiles and stones for indoor and outdoor spaces, in materials such as cement, ceramic, glass, stone, marble and timber.

05

10

The designs reflect Greg’s trademark bold use of pattern and colour, particularly his flair for repeated patterns, and this range of cement tiles epitomises that. “It’s a natural progression for me,” explains Greg, who was inspired by the Italian tiles of his heritage. “This range celebrates the resurgence of patterned tiles in interior design. Contemporary or classic, clean-lined or richly detailed, there’s something here for everyone.”

07
Greg Natale

There are four designs in the range:

  • Optical – warm, bold and intricate, with detailed graphic lines;
  • Triangle – sharp, bright and energetic, a proportional play on pattern;
  • Circle – clean, serene and simple, blending organics with graphics;
  • Hexagon – delicate, playful and light, a softer choice.

Triangle and Circle suit contemporary designs, and the individual tiles can be shifted for various effects. Optical and Hexagon suit more classic spaces. The current colourways are based on strong, appealing monochromes to work with most spaces, but custom colouring is also available.

03

02

No longer are tiles strictly for bathrooms or kitchens – from laid-back living areas to casual dining spaces, from entire floors to borders, walls and highlights, whole houses can be transformed and living spaces enlivened.

Winner of Interior Designer of the Year at the 2014 and 2011 Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards, Greg wrote his first book, The Tailored Interior, last year.

Artist and florist collaborate with colourful results

Wow, these are just beautiful, aren’t they?

LjubicicandCook_jacquiturk-11

This is what happens when an artist (Alesandro Ljubicic) and a florist (Sean Cook of Mr. Cook) collaborate! Alesandro’s highly textured, abstract oil paintings on linen are inspired by Sean’s floral arrangements and a new exhibition (on now until 24 November) will also feature Sean’s floral installations. It promises to be stunning!

Alesandro is not yet 30 but has dedicated his whole life to his passion, art. He not only owns and runs one of the largest fine art supplies stores in Sydney, but is already highly awarded, and has had the opportunity to give awards while judging art prizes. Alesandro’s awards include Finalist in the Paddington Art Prize in 2009 and Finalist in the 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the richest Australian portrait prize, and also the richest portrait prize in the world.

LjubicicandCook_jacquiturk-3

Alesandro works in an open plan studio, painting four to six paintings at once. He explains: “The main thing I’m interested in is, essentially, colour. The flowers are obviously important, but they are really just the starting point for something much broader that I’m really trying to communicate through my paintings. What interests me is how a painting can make you feel, and how colour can change our experience of things and how it can change our perception.”

Fellow Sydneysider and friend, Sean, inspires the beautiful still life paintings and he frequently supplies Alesandro with the flowers that he paints. For 20 years, Sean has created intriguing and inspired floral designs for private homes, restaurants, fashion shoots, corporate events and weddings with his signature organic luxe style.

Hans J Wegner chairs get the Paul Smith treatment

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of renowned Danish designer Hans J Wegner, fashion designer Paul Smith and textile provider Maharam have collaborated with Carl Hansen & Søn (the world’s largest manufacture of furniture designed by Wegner). The collaboration sees the release of a limited edition collection of some of Hans’ most iconic works, with a perhaps equally iconic stripe!

Wegner, with his pioneering Modernist aesthetic, was best known for his idiosyncratic chair designs, such as the Wishbone. Created in 1950, this piece, with its characteristic-shaped back support, became one of his greatest successes; other definitive designs include the three-legged Shell Chair, the minimalist CH28, the CH163 sofa and the contemporary classic, the Wing Chair.

This collaboration however, takes the work of Wegner and transforms it. With Paul Smith himself having personally selected his favourite classic Wegner pieces to launch a capsule collection, upholstered in ‘Big Stripe’ and the new colours of ‘Stripes’.

Designed by Smith in collaboration with Maharam, these two wool textiles explore stripes at dramatically different scales, conveying Smith’s imaginative approach to colour and proportion. As part of a touring exhibition, the collection was unveiled at this year’s Milan Fair in April before arriving here in Australia. It will be presented at Paul Smith Melbourne and also at Kvadrat Maharam in Sydney until 26 September.

The limited edition furniture pieces will be available to purchase during this time from Paul Smith, 120 Collins Street, Melbourne.

The Odd Collective: giving emerging artists licence to print

Book designer and signwriter Sarah Anderson and Matt Johnston, took a big leap when they decided to open The Club of Odd Volumes. With a digital fabric printer as their only tool, they began designing a range of homewares and fashion, as well as custom prints for anyone looking to make one-offs.

Matt and Sarah

It was there that they really hit their stride, realising there were a lot of emerging artists looking to print small runs but with nowhere to do it. And their second business, The Odd Collective, was formed.

With a unique model, The Odd Collective is an online store that showcases 20 artists’ designs on a range of homewares and apparel. Four times a year, half the artists rotate and another 10 fill their place, allowing customers to keep buying from those they love and at the same time being able to check out the work of new artists.

Darren Palmer’s flooring range for Carpet Court

After dishing out style and design advice as a judge on The Block All Stars and The Block Sky High last year, Darren Palmer has collaborated with Carpet Court to create his own affordable designer flooring range, Provincial Lane.

Provincial Lane heathered loop

In a first for the interior designer, his product range will include durable and hard-wearing laminate, a European vinyl plank and bamboo hard flooring, as well as luxurious 100% wool carpet from Cavalier Bremworth and the latest generation solution dyed nylon.

Darren believes the range is both on trend, affordable and retains the beauty of natural elements. “I’ve always been fascinated with the power and beauty of nature so I love to find ways to bring nature’s colours and textures indoors,” he said.
